    Love your videos, very informative. Just finished installing Hyperpro progressive springs on my KTM 390 adv. Had trouble holding down spring to loosen top cap, so jerryrigged a spring compressor with a T handle spring tool and a ratcheting tie down strap! Wrapped the strap around the bottom of the fork leg, then attached the ends to the T handle. Just a few clicks and the nut was exposed!

    If you want to "tune" the oil level or air gap of any fork there is a better and more accurate way. Assemble the fork, open all adjustments, put a zip tie on the fork leg and manually compress the fork until the spring/fork bottoms out, you should feel a solid "stop". This first step should be done with "low" oil level or too large of an air gap. The zip tie indicates the "spring" bottom out limit, mark the bottom of the zip tie position on the fork leg with a marker. Now start adding oil, the correct oil level will prevent the "hard" bottoming out, what you want is a "soft" air gap bottom out function. When the correct oil level is achieved, the zip tie should stop the fork about 1/4 or so of an inch above the spring "stop". With this correct oil level, the compressed air (as the fork compresses) provides additional resistance, it's air ride time. Too much oil, will limit the travel and will blow out your fork seals eventually.
    I do this to all my cheap bikes here in Indonesia and it really helps.

    Just did this mod for my forks, and you're right, much better ride. Front end sits higher, and uses more of the available travel. Like you said, we also gained back a little ground clearance that we gave away with the Black Dog skid plate. Great idea for using the bicycle stand to hold the fork while working on it!! Never would have thought of that one.

    Everything went fairly well for me except I can’t get the rebound clicker to engage and stop spinning clockwise. It worked before I took it apart. The damper rod doesn’t seem to be floating in the cartridge at all. I had a spacer at the bottom of my old spring too. I felt like that should go up top but left it on the bottom since that’s where is started.

    • @advmatt

    hello, thank you for this video 👍 Following that I also installed the hyperpro springs but strangely I found that I lost comfort, the bike is now very firm on small shocks. did you feel that too? Thanks 👍 I am considering removing the second 10mm ring, what do you think?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 роки тому

      It depends on what you weigh and where your compression is set, right fork adjustment. I weigh 210 pounds. I run the compression at the mid point, where before I nearly had set it to the firmest setting. My opinion is, if you weigh less than 175 lbs you might want to remove the spacer and use the compression adjustment to dial in the feeling you want. If your bike doesnt have suspension adjustment you might want to remove the spacer as well.

  • @MattKritzstein

    How are the springs working out now that you have put some miles on them? Notable difference to the stock feel? Moderate difference? Did you 'need' to take out that spacer? Would it have added some height to the front of the bike, or perhaps a touch of ground clearance? (though the rear should be mated to it of course if the height did change) It is the ease at which these bottom out in a quick up and down rut situation that needs addressing for me, even with the compression set all the way up it still hits. Otherwise stock is not horrible for a budget bike, quite impressive. Everything could be better I suppose, my 890R was great stock, but I still had suspension work done, both front and rear, and of course it is even better.
    Either way, its going into the suspension shop for them to have a look and see what they recommend. I will let them know your feedback on this upgrade so we have a point of reference. Thanks Matt, keep up the good work.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 роки тому +5

      There are a lot if questions here so let me see if I can answer all your questions. The new springs made a huge difference. The bike now sits at a proper sag, around 30%, not 45%. I had to remove one spacer because the new spring is longer. Keeping that spacer would be too much preload and your sag would not be enough. I have only bottomed the fork one since changing springs. I run the compression damping at 15 clicks or the mid point and the rebound is around 10 clicks from open. The bike tracks so much better now. The ground clearance is improved because of proper sag. I didnt change the rear spring because I plan to upgrade the rear shock, but if you keep the shock replace the spring. All bikes need a suspension tune to fit riders weight and riding styles. Factory bikes are very generic. Thanks for watching.

    Any particular oil used for better performance? Also what is the weight of the springs Vis a is Stock?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  Рік тому +1

      I didn't change the oil when I changed the springs. I think using the oil Hyperpro provides with the spring kit is a good oil. When choosing an oil you want to also consider how you want the fork to perform. If you are heavier you might want a heavier weight oil, if you are lighter you might want a lighter weight oil. As for the spring rate, Hyperpro does not list the rate. The progressive springs have a variable rate based on compression. I think the initial spring rate is slightly higher than the stock springs and then the rate increases from there. I don't know the fully compressed spring rate. Cheers.

    • @advmatt

    I am doing this mod today. Just wondering what your final opinion is on how many spacers to take out and leave in? Also, how many clicks on compression and rebound did you end up doing?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  Рік тому +1

      I left all the spacers in if I remember correctly, without rewatching this video. I left them in due to my weight of over 200lbs. If you weigh less you might be able to drop one of the spacers. My compression setting is about a third of the way open and my rebound is around the mid point. I don't remember the exact settings but those are good starting points.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  Рік тому

      The fork springs are one size fits all, for the shock it's supposed to be weight matched but I don't think that is actually the case, I think the weight adjustment is for damping and preload from shop.
