Most places will charge you a minimum rate to troubleshoot. It shouldn't take more than an hour. I'm not sure of the cost due to not being an auto mechanic for a living.

It was a defective Ignition Coil on one cylinder.

It wasn't running hot. It sounds like you have a thermostat or water pump issue.
