Definitely worth the money if you shoot sports and wildlife. People who keep banging on about how the D750 from Nikon is better, well that's great, but the 750 doesn't have the AF, the fps and the reach the 7D has - until then, the new Nikon camears are great portrait and landscape cameras and in my region, I see fewer and fewer Nikons on the Sports field. For my studio, I will stick with my Leica and my 6D Each camera was made for a specific use - the FF Nikons (minus the D4) weren't really designed with sports and wildlife as its main target audience
Yeah, one (me, myself and I) need FAST camera especially for wildlife. Smaller the animal is, the faster it is. Usually. In sports, you can do with slower camera, but fast one is always better.
I shoot sports professionally and have used the 7D mki since it was first launched. It is an excellent camera snd I carry a pair of them. They are built like tanks and have both well exceeded 200,000 actuations and are going strong. although I am considering new shutters just to be safe. At the time the mega pixel count and fps were ahead of any other APS-C on the market and are still competitive numbers for those that think that they actually matter these days. It's main drawback has always been that its low light performance isn't great which can be a problem shooting in some indoor arenas. I have had to hire 1Dx's when shooting in certain conditions. When the 7Dmkii came out I hired one to try it out, I was so impressed I bought one the following week. Beyond a certain level mega pixel count and fps are not that relevant, clean images at high ISO's and fast accurate focus tracking are what really counts to the working pro. Whilst the MKii is not quite as good as the 1DX at high ISO's it is significantly better than the mki and the new AF is superb which made upgrading a no-brainer for me. One feature I really like which is rarely mentioned is the anti-flicker. Although it slows the camera down, it gives consistent results in florescent and mixed lighting The 7Di is still a fine camera,I still carry mine and am happy to use them in the right conditions. If you own one and are satisfied with it's performance then you shouldn't upgrade just for the sake of it. If you don't think the 7Dii is enough of an improvement then you are probably not the target market for this camera and should maybe be looking at the 5Diii or hang on for the 6Dii (whenever that happens). Alternatively look at your lenses, when I started shooting back in the film days my mentor said to me "always invest in good glass as that's where the quality is". Whilst digital puts some of the quality back into the body it's still true. I can't tell you the amount of people that I see who keep buying new cameras and still use kit or mid range lenses and bemoaning that there isn't a great improvement in their new camera. If you've never used high quality glass before then you'll be amazed at the performance improvement it gives you. Also, whilst camera bodies will be seemingly forever improved (and will out resolve cheaper lenses) a great lens will last a lifetime and may reduce the frequency that you feel you need to upgrade your bodies. Pro glass may seem like an expensive option but, if you're serious about photography, they will get the best out of your camera and will actually save you money in the long term.
David K Exactly, from a dude that has real use case for the camera. Anyone saying that you should buy a 5D for sports & wildlife is leading you astray.
The 7DII is geared towards sports and wildlife photography just as how their are cameras best suited for portraits and low light. The 7DII is a beast in terms of low light performance as well.
Current US Amazon prices, body only: 7D Mark II - $1799 7D Mark I - $1029 Are the marginal improvements worth another $800? (I mean for the rest of us, who can't blow our life savings on camera gear.) By the way, 7D Mark I used body prices start at $558, which is remarkable.
Go to Amazon.com, search for 7D, look in the "used" section. I'll paste a link below but I'm not sure if it'll post on youtube. www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002NEGTTW/ref=sr_1_2_olp?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1417679349&sr=1-2&keywords=canon+7d&condition=used

so sweet to hear the only intro again, thanks guys. I would like to caution people with all that water splashing can cause problems with the nobs after a while.
I love your reviews and your fun way of presenting your findings. If I could, I would like to make one suggestion: the background music is often covering your voice and it makes it hard to hear you. If possible to adjust this settings, that would be great. Thanks!
Biplav Shrestha I know - I own and regularly use one. :P But it's not all about specs, I still manage photos like this: i.imgur.com/utZGnN2.jpg But yeah, 7D II is amazing and I can't wait to upgrade.
Victor Shikhman You have to shop around a bit but I was lucky to find one for a bit over a week (left on a Sunday arrived on a Saturday, so the timing was off), and I got the 7D II, 32GB CF card, 32GB SD card, and two extra batteries for about $350 AUD, which was hella cheap. It's pricey but I've been waiting a long time for this camera and wanted to give it a proper test drive. I probably wouldn't rent a camera body (at least not for a week!) unless you had a serious need to, or were seriously interested in an expensive piece of kit (like a 7D II, 5D III or a 1D X, all of which aren't terribly different to rent price wise either). If you do want to rent a body to see what it's like, I reckon get one for 3 days, 4 if you can stretch.
Re-watching the 7D hardcore durability test video and... wow guys you really have up'd the quality of your videos since then, as well as become even more professional yourselves without losing face :)
My money went to the new Nikon D750. Full frame, tilt screen, 24 mp. For few hundred dollars more it is a much better camera. Unless somebody invested in Canon lenses, then I rather wait for the full frame 5Ds replacement.
Better AF & 10 fps is not enough. Still poor DR, a little bit better iso performance (3200 is just ok, 6400 looks shitty). Blurred video with moire, but... in 60 fps (wow). Better option? Used 1D IV or 5D III for this price.
Janis Farhat Sensors in Canon aps-c cameras are almost the same like 5 years ago. No progress in picture & video quality, just a better bodies with new features. Angus Choi Production quality did not decline. Penis jokes declined, which is good. If I wanted to listen to penis jokes Alamby's the wrong person to go to.
In my eyes this is the most awaited camera for me,this blows the full frame entry level DSLRs like the D600 and the 6D. PERIOD. can we see a 1dx v/s 7d mk2 field test?
Nice. I just picked up the 7D mk ii on black friday. Hope to see you guys around in HK as I'm flying to HK tomorrow and I'll be visiting HK/China for 2 months. My wife and I will be shooting up HK. She uses the 70D and I use the 7d mkii and 5d mkiii.
I think the 7D MkII is an example of the bind that camera companies are in these days - the loss of compact camera sales to smartphones means reduced turnover and less money for R&D, while innovation is the only thing that will keep you afloat, You only have to look at what Samsung's done with the NX1 to see all the things Canon's left out of the MkII - but Samsung is HUGE, and can write off the R&D costs for those new technologies much more easily (just think who the leaders are in consumer 4K video at the moment - Panasonic, Sony & Samsung, all electronics companies with a camera division). That's not to say that if I were a Canon shooter I'd be switching to Samsung - there are all sorts of factors such as focussing speed and accuracy, ergonomics, lens availability and customer support - but the fact is, Samsung have made a very impressive first try at a pro-quality APS-C camera, and they have the resources to keep introducing new models, new lenses and new technologies in a way that traditional camera/cinema/optical companies like Canon are going to struggle to do.
This is a Mk2. If it were such a massive leap they'd call it something else entirely. The point of MkX is they're incremental improvements. Sometimes the improvement is more like a chasm that shakes the industry (like the 5D MkII) but that kind of thing is extremely rare. This is a very solid upgrade from the previous model, it's better in every area. It may not be worth upgrading from the MkI, but if you're using one of their entry level or mid range systems like the 700D for example then this is the perfect stepping stone into the pro body leagues. Remember, new products aren't just made for existing customers, but also new ones.
***** It isn't about feature lists. It's about the implementation and it does a damn good job at that point. This is possibly the best crop sensor DSLR you can currently buy.
TalesOfWar That's certainly true (and I think I acknowledge that in my comments). The problem for Canon, Nikon and Olympus is that implementation is something that's relatively cheap to improve, whereas core technology isn't. Samsung have the resources to introduce an NX1 MKII next year with improved handling and ergonomics, and a MKIII the year after, and keep writing off models until they hit a sweet spot or decide to stop losing money. Think about how quickly Fuji has learned from their users and how that's built a reputation for them. Their limitation is technology; AF and video have been their Achilles heels. Samsung have the resources to keep updating the technology as well. It's fair enough to say that the 7DmkII is mainly an upgrade for Canon users, but if it's not also compelling to outside users, Canon runs the risk of selling to a diminishing dedicated user base. Right now the balance is with Canon, but if the likes of Samsung and Sony continue improving their products, then in only a couple of years, buying a 7DmkII could look like a silly decision.
I've seen an instagram post that you've run out of things to review... Would you be kind enough to entertain these suggestions and do a review on each of them? 1) the new Canon 50mm f1.8 STM 2) camera comparisons (in terms of image and video quality) between Canon 7D Mark II, Sony A7 II, and Sony A7r II, and Sony A7s 3) an in-depth review of Nikon D7200
The humor made his reviews fun to watch! What are you talking about? There are many sensible reviewers out there but it's the funny ones that stands out!
He did a review the Sony Alpha A77 II and he basically shat on it. And now with the Canon, he loves it. But, they are the same damn camera! In fact, I would actually think the Sony takes the upper hand in the battle.
Bror Svensson Extras and yet none if that even came up in the review. How is it that I'm supposed to take this and the Sony review seriously when the outward presentation is so inconsistent?
+CSLFiero, I totally agree! I don't understand why Kai isn't a fan of Sony, I mean, if you look at the specs of the A77 II, they will kill the Canon. And the lens argument isn't even valid since there are aftermarket lenses like Tamron and Sigma!
you always complain about the gear you're reviewing. could you provide a link to a review where you were enthusiastic about a camera? i'd like to watch it.
there are a few things really important that you forgot... it can focus at f8 with TC and pretty fast. and they only improve two MP because with the new generation of lenses you don´t need more, other brands are giving a lot of MP but the lenses can´t give that much, but canon lenses can, thats why you don´t need more. unless you print road signs....
I know you guys are photographers, but would have loved to hear more about the video features and get some feedback on that, as that (along with the FPS) are the main selling points for this camera.
What do you need wifi for? I mean, that's an odd reason to NOT upgrade. I could understand if you were picking a camera that had wifi over another, but deciding NOT to upgrade at all simply because it doesn't have wifi is weird.
ClankyRochet I see. No, it doesn't have wifi. The reason (that they say) for this is because of the magnesium alloy body (metal) - and the fact that it is weather sealed. Because of this, if it did have wifi, the receiver/transmitter would have to be inside the body - sealed off from the outside, so the signal would be horrible. So they say.
You Didn't emphasize that this a 65 auto-focus point AF-system with all points been crosstype! I know just 2 fps more, just 2 megapixels more, but hell this auto-focus system is amazing!
You totally forgot about the auto focus system... that's the huge difference. I have the 7D m1 and with the m2 you get that smooth "camcorder like" continuous auto focus in video. That's the big difference. (and 10fps is great too!)
What Canon should have done with the 7d mark 2 is to release a 2k raw video mode in addition to full hd compressed. Just that alone would persuade many people to buy the 7d mark 2 over the Black Magic pocket, Samsung NX1, Gh4, and the 4k Nex cameras.
I am thinking of buying this camera of your site but the problem is that i would love you to make a hardcore durability test on this camera, i have seen the 7d test but i was just really curious how the mark II would compete.. thank you very much
Referring to your last statement, yes, upgrading form 7D to 7D Mk2 is worth every penny, provided you have used the former for some years as I id (bought in 09). The 7D Mk2 is is essentially a baby 1D x with a 70%+ smaller price tag. The new AF alone justifies the upgrade for me. ISO, IQ etc have greatly improved. Actually, at the price Canon is asking, it's bargain.
Good to see Kai again, still miss Alamby Lok is funny but sometimes difficult to follow, because of his accent. Nice review i miss some stuff... because actually there is a lot got better! less noise better IQ, info in the Viewfinder... I loved the video about the durability of the 7D, i know it does not make sense to do it with this because it should be better, but still love it, i watch it so now and then.
After owning two nikon DSLR's I've finally decided to pick a Canon, nikon's service is awful having my main DSLR break right before a job & having horrible customer service requesting more than the cameras worth for a repair, I'm glad to find out this also has 3yrs warranty & free battery grip plus christmas money back guarantee I really can't fault it.
Great review. All we need now is for Nikon to hurry a little and bring out the D7200. All it needs is more buffer, more FPS, wifi built in and a tilting touch screen tied with a revised optical low pass filter free sensor. And it will make for some great comparison videos.
Yea, I almost bought the D7000 and the D7100 but the buffer is garbage - with 6 fps, with a buffer that can only hold 12 RAW shots and then it locks up for 4-5 seconds. Not good. Even the 7D original can do 20 RAW at 8fps. the new one can do 32 at 10fps. BUT if Canon can release a FF, 8fps, similar AF as the 7Dmk2 and with no low pass filter I will buy it buy it buy it buy it.
Pepingco With the firmware update the original 7D has a 25 frame RAW buffer, and I see 27-28 with a decent CF card before it slows down. With a fast (1066x) CF card you can get 46 RAW frames before the 7D II "slows down", and I put that in quotes because after the buffer is full it still maintains 5.7 fps. So with a full buffer...and a fast CF card...the 7D II can shoot almost as fast as the D7100 with an empty buffer.
+Guillermography Studios I've worked with the D3300 & D5100 , the burst rate was way too slow when I was shooting moving subjects incl a bike race & firework display, I'd 100% recommend the canon just on that alone.
Being new to DSLR I was wondering when in live view with this camera and your toggling through the exposture and apiture settings, does it show you how dark or bright the image is on the screen, before you take the picture?
Okay what about if you dont have the 7D? do you go for the 7D since there should be a decent price drop on second hand or refurbished or do you go all out and get the 7DmII body?
If you're an active 7D shooter from the start, this is about the perfect time to switch. Nikon has no equivalent, just like they didn't have one for the original 7D.
Canon wasn't afraid to dream a little bigger with the 7D II but is a little worth the money?
Vastly improved quality review compared to the review for the Nikon D750. Thank you.
Not worth the money for a crop sensor... for little more you can get a Nikon D750 which kills this camera in inage quality. Where is Canons 6d II?
Deffinately worth of money! Ultimate game changer for crop sensors!

You talked about the auto focus in video mode but why not show us? Thats a huge thing to miss out!
I've seen an instagram post that you've run out of things to review...
Would you be kind enough to entertain these suggestions and do a review on each of them?
1) the new Canon 50mm f1.8 STM
2) camera comparisons (in terms of image and video quality) between Canon 7D Mark II, Sony A7 II, and Sony A7r II, and Sony A7s
3) an in-depth review of Nikon D7200
That's the camera that I'm planning to get real soon the Canon 7D mark II!!
Hope I get my hands on the DSLR camera very soon!!
i nominate 5:30 as the best bit of digital rev tv to date
Wow, that model is such an athlete. You guys should do more extreme videos with him.
I might purchase this beast sometime next year if no major issues come up
You are pretty much the Top Gear of photography
I Like your videos, when i study (& learn) from you.
.
The Mark ii is dope! I did a unboxing on my channel, can't wait to do a proper hands on!!
Keep up this kind of review Kai, i prefer this one. Less humor = more info :)
The humor made his reviews fun to watch! What are you talking about? There are many sensible reviewers out there but it's the funny ones that stands out!
Spektrik it's just my opinion. I just want LESS not NO Humor.
Where can I find these two guys on UA-cam? The rock!
I would like to see a review on the Sony A7 Mark II please.
Back flip was epic
please do 7D II vs a77 II, should be fun comparing two mark two !
He did a review the Sony Alpha A77 II and he basically shat on it. And now with the Canon, he loves it. But, they are the same damn camera! In fact, I would actually think the Sony takes the upper hand in the battle.
exepct that canon has a way superior set of lenses, and alot more likeable skin tones
I shoot aviation, so skin tones don't matter to me. In my opinion, the Sony will beat the Canon any day in outdoor/sports photography.
+Bror Svensson Extras
Bror Svensson Extras and yet none if that even came up in the review. How is it that I'm supposed to take this and the Sony review seriously when the outward presentation is so inconsistent?
+CSLFiero, I totally agree! I don't understand why Kai isn't a fan of Sony, I mean, if you look at the specs of the A77 II, they will kill the Canon. And the lens argument isn't even valid since there are aftermarket lenses like Tamron and Sigma!
Good review interesting action shots
Review Sony A7 II with IBIS please!
you always complain about the gear you're reviewing. could you provide a link to a review where you were enthusiastic about a camera? i'd like to watch it.
great review. I enjoyed your entertaining and informative review. Thankyou
Great video, guys!
Can we see ISO test in the video mode too in future reviews?
there are a few things really important that you forgot... it can focus at f8 with TC and pretty fast. and they only improve two MP because with the new generation of lenses you don´t need more, other brands are giving a lot of MP but the lenses can´t give that much, but canon lenses can, thats why you don´t need more. unless you print road signs....
About time!!
Some new sensor innovation would have made it a MUST-buy.
DigitalRev could you please review more Pentax cameras!
Missed you!
I know you guys are photographers, but would have loved to hear more about the video features and get some feedback on that, as that (along with the FPS) are the main selling points for this camera.
quiet, stupid.
Great review ...love the personal touch...ooh err missus
New Pancake 24mm 2.8 will you do a review? Kai
Nice conclusion
Does the new 7d ii have wifi? I think I'll keep my 7d.
What do you need wifi for? I mean, that's an odd reason to NOT upgrade. I could understand if you were picking a camera that had wifi over another, but deciding NOT to upgrade at all simply because it doesn't have wifi is weird.
I'm just wondering whether it has wifi or not. I'm not upgrading because I see no reason to upgrade from my 7d to the 7d ii, not because of wifi.
ClankyRochet
I see. So they say.
i love this cam soo much
You Didn't emphasize that this a 65 auto-focus point AF-system with all points been crosstype!
I think also the Headphone connector makes it a good upgrade. I missed that on my 60D
Does the Mark II have dual-pixel AF like the 70D?
Hey its the Jeremy Clarkson for DSLR cameras. Where's your May and Hammond sidekicks mate?....Jokes aside, I do love your reviews.
Yuuhuuu a video!!, Greetings from Chilee!!!
Amazing cam. Best work of canon for me :)
Glad I got mine great purchase
Kai, Did you get a chance to do a ice, water and fire test for Samsung NX1 ?
What happened to the Jordan 5s during the actual review? :)
When is its durability test coming?
Is that guy with a hat Dennis from linus tech tips?
so, hardcore test mark II ?
What Canon should have done with the 7d mark 2 is to release a 2k raw video mode in addition to full hd compressed. Just that alone would persuade many people to buy the 7d mark 2 over the Black Magic pocket, Samsung NX1, Gh4, and the 4k Nex cameras.
What lens are you using in this video with the 7D Markii
Are they going to upgrade the 5d markIII anytime soon and when was the realse date when it first came out
I am thinking of buying this camera of your site but the problem is that i would love you to make a hardcore durability test on this camera, i have seen the 7d test but i was just really curious how the mark II would compete..
thank you very much
Referring to your last statement, yes, upgrading form 7D to 7D Mk2 is worth every penny, provided you have used the former for some years as I id (bought in 09). The 7D Mk2 is is essentially a baby 1D x with a 70%+ smaller price tag. The new AF alone justifies the upgrade for me. ISO, IQ etc have greatly improved. Actually, at the price Canon is asking, it's bargain.
you know the video is gonna be good when Kai is actually bothered to wear a blazer...
thanks for a solid review, its been awhile :)
First review I've seen that is _shorter_ than the preview.
This man is my hero
Need More!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why are you shooting with the 24-70 f4 rather than the 2.8. what are the differences between the two lenses?
Good to see Kai again, still miss Alamby
Lok is funny but sometimes difficult to follow, because of his accent.
Nice review i miss some stuff... because actually there is a lot got better! less noise better IQ, info in the Viewfinder...
I loved the video about the durability of the 7D, i know it does not make sense to do it with this because it should be better, but still love it, i watch it so now and then.
I would love to know how the auto focus compares to the 1D mk2,3,4 for doing action and sports photography.
The autofocus itself is quite quick, actually. While it's not as quick as my 1D X, it's the next in line and definitely easy enough to get used to.
Pepingco
With the firmware update the original 7D has a 25 frame RAW buffer, and I see 27-28 with a decent CF card before it slows down.
Daniel Taylor Ah my numbers were a bit off - and that's actually amazing - did not know the buffer was that fast and that huge.
No it wont. Nikon suck, 7000 series isn't anywhere near this.
which camera was used to record this video?
Hmm is it bad that I do feel the need to upgrade to 6D?
+DigitalRev TV Would recommend this camera as I come from a Nikon D5100, and since most of my work involves moving subjects?
+Guillermography Studios I've worked with the D3300 & D5100 , the burst rate was way too slow when I was shooting moving subjects incl a bike race & firework display, I'd 100% recommend the canon just on that alone.
I love to see 100% crops when testing iso. I couldnt see any noise at H2... at 1080p. Love the vids tho!!!!!
could you do a canon 7d vs 7d mark II video?
Being new to DSLR I was wondering when in live view with this camera and your toggling through the exposture and apiture settings, does it show you how dark or bright the image is on the screen, before you take the picture?
Okay what about if you dont have the 7D? do you go for the 7D since there should be a decent price drop on second hand or refurbished or do you go all out and get the 7DmII body?
mayb i have wait another year for mark 2, still happy with
ma mighty #Canon 7D
Is the 7d still worth buying now?
Hello Kai, i have question.
What is last shots's exif about?
If you're an active 7D shooter from the start, this is about the perfect time to switch. Nikon has no equivalent, just like they didn't have one for the original 7D.
Ahh! I'm good with the first 7D. When I'm ready to make a major upgrade, I'll just move to the 5D Mark iii. :)
