I love that a group that started in my home country, with mostly Asian-Australians, has blown up to the point of reaching huge Asian-American UA-camrs and even Asians in Asia as well. It's cool seeing that we can all relate to these tiny things despite being so far away, and also cool seeing things that only one certain group of people can relate to and learning about their lives as well.
Thanks to all our Asian-Australians for commenting! We actually didn't know it started in Australia, how awesome!! In the end, it's amazing how this little group grew so quickly and was able to bond thousands of us across the world. 😊
My Aussie friends invited me to it in the early days of the group. For me someone halfway around the world, it was really cool and funny to see that other Asians that grew up with immigrant parents grew up experiencing the exact same things that I did. I think that's why the group has such a global appeal, like Wes mentioned, nobody talks about these things but everyone has experienced them.
This page actually came from subtle private schools traits page, which was made in Australia!!! The subtle Asian trait page is also an Australian page, that seemed to blow up
I remember the exact date i was added by my brother, it was on the 16th of september, there was around 8,500 members and I had around 10 mutual friends on the group (I am from Sydney). The memes were hilarious and so relatable especially because they were Asian-Australian specific, it really felt like a close-knit community who could understand all the unspoken similarities we all shared within the country. I added the one friend I was with (there was a feeling of exclusivity and pride being an earlier member), and the most liked post (I think it was the egg and tomato meme) had around 600 likes. Less than a couple days later, I had around 60 mutuals on the page and the member amount had jumped to almost 100k. Memes from the page filled my newsfeed so much I thought I was scrolling through the group all the time, and my notifications were blowing up from all the tags, it was great. Come november, the group was gradually becoming more globalised, first with Canadians to finally americans and other global citizens. Original memes were becoming recycled and words like lg's and bubble tea were changing to ABG's and Boba. Still to this day, I quite enjoy the memes, although they are becoming quite americanised, its interesting to see how I can relate to people living across the world from me. I would confidently say around 90% of Australian Asians living in metropolitan cities have been added to the page (everyoneee knows about the page here), but its cool seeing a lot Americans in these comments asking to be added and acting the same to how I was when I had just been added.
5:31 SM Mall In the Philippines, the guy who put the fire out take his initiative to put the fire outtake he took his sleeper to kill the fire LOL!!!!!
i love the ending how you jenn + phil mentioned how in the process of being prideful, we shouldn’t bring others down as well. at the end of the way, we should be celebrating all - while sharing what our own cultural norms have to offer! ♡
Some of my friends are the admin's of the page and I was one of the first's to be invited to the group. In the initial week of it's launch no one in the group would have imagined that it'd become the scale that it is now. From what was intended as uniquely Melbourne Australian Asian, quickly becoming uniquely whole of Australian Asian; it was reliable in a sense of being 'the' Facebook page for the Australian Asian community. Now picking up ground globally, I think it's great that the page is more diverse in relatable posts/memes and we're able to get an insight on other Asian communities. With it quickly gaining recognition in articles, even being acknowledged by UA-camrs such as Wong Fu themselves, I'm excited to see where the future of this page lies. I just hope the admins are able to do more with the page rather than it just being a 24/7 asian meme content.
We also now have 2 new groups: Asian Creative Network and Subtle Asian Creates. It’s been so incredible digitally meeting creative people around the world. Seeing asian filmmakers, directors, photographers, screenwriters etc, (specific to the film industry) has been amazing to see us represent in our industry. We are inspired by you guys Wong Fu Prod! It’s been so awesome being apart of a supportive culture and we all aspire to break ceilings ☺️
ikr back when it was first made it was just a bunch of us Australians with the odd American or two and we did like a poll of who's Australian vs American etc and the number of Australians completely overwhelmed the number of Americans, then suddenly it blew up and so many Americans started joining that the admins had to control the group so that it became closed and could only get in by invite XD
I know right. I remember when there was only 200k~ members and every American that made a shit post, everyone would give them the biggest shit and saying kick them all off. Now it's just international lmao
we have a plasticbags plasticbag holder. i think the thing with asians perhaps moreso asians born or raised out of asia, we are part of two worlds but unlike other groups who dont like to joke or poke fun of themselves, asian americans, etc can laugh at ourselves, some silliness we do, while also being proud at the same time. i love bbt so kuch, when uber started to deliver it..well..now i dont even have to move to get my addiction lol.
Lol i've been rewatching all the old school wong fu content b/c now they're actually relateable compared to when i first watched it when i was in high school
wong fu really was subtle asian traits before subtle asian traits lmao!!! my middle school self was obsessed w strangers again, idk how i grasped the concept so firmly at 12 but maybe that's why i'm so emotional now at 19
I got added to Subtle Asian Traits by my co-worker over Thanksgiving break and now it has literally taken over my feed toooo funny. kind of wanna make subtle mixed traits for all of us mixed babies out there. heehe
IT STARTED IN AUSTRALIA AND SUDDENLY NOW AMERICANS ARE IN IT. I USED TO BE ABLE TO RELATE SO MUCH now im slightly confused cuz of the americans. BUT YEA ASIAN AUSTRALIAANS AKNOWLEDGEMENT
Omg I remember when I was first invited to the group, I think there was about 1000+ people and I thought it would only gain as much popularity as my uni's confessions page... but got damn it blew up 😂As the Americans came into the group it made me realise some similarities and differences between Aussie-Asians and American-Asians. I used to be stuck on that page for hours until my battery ran out and constantly tagging and being tagged HAHAHA I'll be honest tho, I don't scroll through it as much anymore because I find it less relatable now as there are too many American-Asian specific posts... but its still interesting to me to learn about the subtle differences in culture such what you call an "ABG", we would refer to as LG and how we literally refer to "boba" as milk tea or bubble tea. And those polls/posts about which suburb was the "best"; omg I wanna see an international version of that, Sydney's most popular Asian suburbs vs California's All in all I'm glad that this group is bringing every Asian person who grew up in a western country together, and we can all joke around about our struggles and celebrate our many Asian cultures ❤️
I laugh everytime I rewind to Taylor's subtle "Good job. I think." LMBO They put this secret page on blast lol they are going to meme you to death now lol
I think that the reason for the success is that everyone has a chance to submit content and make their own jokes, everyone can have a moment of fame. on traditional pages, its a small group of people posting all the memes, but with the groups, everyone can be involved not to mention having 800k+ ppl able to post makes the group virtually 24/7, its taken over my entire feed lol (no complaints tho, made facebook wayy better and I spend so much time on there now compared to before the group)
I actually don't think that there's anything wrong with having "private ethnic groups"(regardless of purpose), maybe because I AM part of one, but it is a good way to have a space where order is easy to manage and keep since we all know each other and whatnot =\ there will always be that generic space where generic stuff that we can all relate to there, but there needs to be the small "not anyone can relate to" space too. We have it, others have it, there's no need to be butthurt about it ;)
Yall gotta calm down with the aussie comments. I'm sure they get it! But how funny is it that we keep seeing "boba" memes when us Aussies know it as "bubble tea". Though I think one of the best things about the group is that it gives Americans exposure to asian-australians. I've been to the u.s so many times and asians there are still so shocked there are a plethora of Asian Australians.. and that we are all still relatable on the other side of the world.

Yeet

It's less relatable now all these Americans joined
we have a different sense of humour that makes it funnier
Just a friendly reminder that Jenn looks beautiful.

CodeSNSD Hey~ SONE AND GOLDENSTAR 💗
Pretty good for them to set a good example for living green and sustainably. I just got my first reusable straw!
love that! but also wished they didnt use styrofoam to-go boxes cos those are the worse :(
Yeah, there's more waste than reusable stuff there.
Finally a lunch break with both Phil and Wes. I missed you guys together.
