I think the critique was "white girlboss throws poc girlboss under bus while preaching about girlbosshood", but not "being a landlord is bad in the first place"
@@roza2633 i think its about the self victimization, she acts like she understands what blanca went through when in reality she’s just suffering the consequences of her actions. and the only reason she stops discriminating against blanca is that she literally cant anymore (being in prison) and has to reflect on her actions. she knew people who were dying from the plague beforehand, so it’s not as if she truly cares for lgbt people. but she’s found an opportunity to compare herself to a community she’s marginalized, feel bad for herself, and create a fake openminded-ness. and its not unlikely with her character that she either consciously or subconsciously is doing this in an attempt to lessen her crime in the public eye by seeming remorseful. im not sure if this makes sense and im sorry if its long, but thats some of what i thought about it

I didn't actually see Frederica in this apparent sympathetic light. I primarily saw her as a ruthless villain, with her proseletyzing about how her hardships stemming from her womanhood being disingenuous considering her immense privilege which I'm fairly certain she acknowledges. Her brand of feminism was purely performative, as her press conference demonstrated. I'm definitely intrigued to see the character examined from this angle, and a lot of the points ended up making more sense now than they did before, particularly Frederica's jarring dramatic turnaround in prison (and to a lesser extent, her performance at the AIDS cabaret).
Pose is one of my absolute favorite shows, but I definitely thought Frederica’s presence and arc were super weird. It felt very much like Ryan Murphy just wanted to give a role to one of his favorite actors. You could cut out a majority of her scenes and the show would not even only still make sense, but would honestly probably have better continuity, not even getting into what her character represents. I feel like her character has a similar vibe to Stan, but I do think the plot line about him blatantly fetishizing trans women was actually important, since it is a struggle that a lot of trans women actually face. I loved S2 of Pose, but Frederica’s entire character was so unnecessary. She did nothing but treat everyone around her like absolute trash, and in her final scene, we’re asked to sympathize with her. No thanks.
I guess I sort of feel like the fact she has this face-heel turn in prison also kind of speaks to a belief in the idea that prisons 'rehabilitate' people rather than retraumatise them. She stops being transphobic simply because she's faced justice, and we're supposed to believe that after she's out, she'll become a 'good' #girlboss landlord instead.
Absolutely. Her motives were demonstrated to be entirely selfish. Her holding herself up as a feminist pariah becuase she was a woman was, I think, supposed to be either deluded or disingenuous since, by her own admission, she tore down other women to get to the top.
Whenever Frederica talks about feminism my reflex was to interpret as a critique of white feminism, because although she can be charismatic in some ways she's very clearly a terrible person and her 'problems' are problems any of the main cast would love to be having instead of their own. That said, they obviously try to make her in some way redeemable, when she deserves no forgiveness. She should be treated as completely irredeemable as soon as she uses the aids rally as a smokescreen. As you say these cues like the kind of music they play really give away directed intentions. Patti and Stan play a much better role than Frederica imo, they set the scene by providing this stark contrast in day to day living, and are more complex than Frederica to boot, but this kind of close emotional parallel is used up after season 1 and didn't need to be revisited. The societal disparity should have been examined in a more systemic way in season 2, cold, mechanistic I agree with your assessment that its ultimately a liberal show. It's a relatively kind and openminded liberalism, but here's the thing: Media can be very critical of all sorts of things, even capitalism and class, but it will remain liberal if it refuses to propose that anything else is actually better, that there is an alternative
I always interpreted fredericka as a critique of white feminism. Fredericka's pseudo feminist outlook is repeatedly shown to be hollow in the face of her ruthlessness and bigotry. I thought it was a good portrayal of why women in power is not inherently feminist. That being said, I believe there was a small time skip implied before the prison scene (she looks more worn down) which is why her change is supposed to make sense. Also, they did plant the seeds of her changing in the show with how she changed from seeing Blanca as an inferior to be crushed without effort to an opponent requiring cleverness to defeat (while I know that its unrealistic, pose is still fiction with lots of other embellishments so I'm willing to let it pass), planting a growing respect for Blanca. They also planted some more complex emotional development with her trans husband(?) and friend who passed from aids, but also the repeated insistence that she must be like/tougher than the men in her business which translates to her burying any feelings of sympathy bc she believes it will keep her from the top. The payoff for all that implied emotional depth (she IS a side character after all and pose doesnt get many episodes per season) is that after she's lost everything, it provokes a reexamination of her values and beliefs, since she was ruthless and lost everything anyway. Granted I'm taking a lot of implied character depth, but I do think that the showrunners are setting her up for a redemption arc where she begins to see how empty and vapid her girlboss brand feminism is. A redemption arc for a white feminist experiencing consequences for her actions and choosing to change and grow is a really interesting idea to me-especially bc in this case, it doesnt rely on the suffering of characters of color to accomplish. Whether or not theyll go after her landlord practices, idk. I hope they dont turn her into a "good" landlord but who knows
I get strong "wrong thing for the right reason" vibes, (unless I misunderstood the meme.) Arguing for bodily autonomy seems good, (and if we study rhetoric, we see that sometimes the most effect message has to be tailored to the audience.) So I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt and saying that I'm not the target audience.
I personally would like to see more media based stuff like this video. Topics like fascism being semi glorified in film or the portrayal of non binary genders in tv or movies.

They go on a date and don't get murdered. They go on an audition and get the gig. They finish school. They fall in love. To depict them as facing difficulties, but also personal wins, -- like all of us do -- gives full humanity to them.

This kind of reminds of "Gentleman Jack". Anne Lister is tough, smart, and goes through a lot, so it's hard not to applaud her finding love and financial independence and whatnot. But she does it as a landlord and coal mine owner. You see her turning people turning people out of the cottages where they've lived for years "for their own good"...and because a younger family could make it more profitable. She even initially starts to court Anne Walker because she has money, just like a man of her time might seek out a rich wife. Based on the first episode, I thought the class dynamics might be a theme of the show...but then it wasn't really explored that much.
What's interesting is that I really didn't perceive that way,, it felt like every time frederica said things like in man's world we were supposed to like roll our eyes at that and then in the interview we were supposed to know she was disingenuous because every time before that when she acted genuine it was revealed to be as part of a plot against Blanca,, so I don't really agree that she was portrayed as sympathetic at all

I actually interpreted her character as pointing out how easy it is to humanize white women but that they’re still a huge threat of oppression at the end of the day.
I don't have any particular things I want to see, because you tend to bring things into my field of view that I wouldn't see otherwise. But I will leave a comment with my fingers for the algo
As I'm passing by this comment section I would leave the recommendation of this small and easy to read but fantástic book: Feminism for the 99%: a manifesto
i know this was just a passing comment but i feel very validated by your saying it's weird that there aren't any trans men, i'm a butch lesbian and i always thought it was implausible for there not to be any butches or studs (or gnc women) or trans men. i love pose though it's such a good show...
Well, of course. It's Ryan Murphy. He loves people like Pete Buttigieg who, yes, is gay, and also a corporate ghoul almost indistinguishable from an android designed in a laboratory of political marketing.
Please talk about Work in Progress. Living in small towns in the mid west, it was so refreshing to see a tv show that highlights different ways of living and having relationships.
How did I miss this? Knew about Warhol's "The Factory" & "Studio 54", guess the scene must slipped between "My Beautiful Laundrette" & "Boys Don’t Cry" - have to watch "Paris Is Burning" I think now.
Although slightly different, the relationship between Frederica and Bianca in POSE reminds me a lot of the relationship between Marie Laveau and Fiona Goode in AHS. It’s interesting to hear this perspective!
This show meant a lot to me, and I agree that Frederica's arc was a bit weird. I've only recently been made aware of the nefarious nature of land lords (since it is unlikely I will ever own a house of my own it was always just a given that they existed so I didn't give it too much thought), and that was after watching the show.
uwaa may u please talk more about Pose? It's one of my favorite shows, and no one else is making videos about it! I'd love to hear more about what you have to say!!!
I love Pose so much as a whole, but season 2 SO clearly fired the actual people from the ball scene who were consulting on season 1 and I do think the show went a little off the rails because of it. Thanks for the great analysis!
"A mainstream show on Netflix was never going to so far as to state that buying up property and charging people to live in it is a bad thing, so with this in mind, it's still really refreshing to see a landlords a villain and some of the associated evils out in full." Okay, but...like...I know that's not ALL season 1 of Daredevil was about, but like, the slum-lordism, rent extraction, evictions, and deliberately poor maintenance for the sake of bundling lots together for further consolidation/ housing/land market manipulation or somesuch were all fairly relevant AND featured prominently enough that, to me, the writers/creators seemed to be making the point that there IS real-world villainy, that letting such folks do as they please has dire consequences, and that, thus, they require opposition. "I imagine, that by itself would probably have pissed off a lot of viewers who own property." As I recall, season 1 did indeed ruffle a few feathers!
A larger problem, I think, is with Ryan Murphy's writing during the last decade when it comes to the comedy/drama genres (AHS and older work like N/T sometimes avoid this trope, perhaps due to the genre for AHS and older work he had less control over, like in the case of N/T) : Ryan Murphy is unable to write characters who are "evil". If a character is on screen for more than 10 minutes, that character will get some sort of justification or redemption arc, literally no matter what. instead making them constantly, constantly redeemable. Take, for instance, the craziest, most self indulgent shit he ever made: Hollywood, which at one point has an agent who is literally a rapist, preying on young gay actors, but is still redeemed by the end of the show, inexplicably. Once you start to see this sort of skeleton of RM's writing, you will be unable to ever unsee it. Would love to see a longer video essay on these annoying crutches of his work, which I feel are often overlooked.
oh wow, I love this insight. Have you per chance watched this series called Motherland: Fort Salem? It came out last year, it's about witches being drafted into the military. The military here is more matriarchal and theres a lot of people of color casted in it. However, as much as I like the show, there's something "interesting" about the politics in that world which I want to have discussed but I can't seem to find a good conversation on it. Please let me know if you're interested in getting into it. All the best and happy new year!
If it something you would like to do, I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on "harmless" conspiracy theories (e.g. birds aren't real, the existence of cryptids, Avril Lavigne was replaced, etc) and whether they are really harmless
oddly enough a video along these lines is already on the list, I worked in close proximity to people who buy into this stuff a few years back and have some tales to tell 💀
i actually totally forget this character in the show, though she did have a part to play, i felt she was mostly insignificant to the main character's lives, so i didn't mind this girlboss character, though i see these points and they are valid. perhaps this character isn't really that important enough in the show to pay dust.
Hm, I actually saw her as a satire of bourgeois feminism and therefore liked the scenes where she brings up her 'feminism'.

Haven't watched Pose but the lesson here is so universal
:) thanks for uploading another video
Another great video! Editing felt particularly good on this one!
Wow amazing breakdown! So happy I came across this video :} definitely gonna subscribe
ALGORITHM TAKE MY ENERGY
fuse your energy with mine
we can make it if we try
now THIS is the kind of video that gets me to watch a show.
no idea why. it just is.
I have been so anxiously waiting for the third season!
I actually interpreted her character as pointing out how easy it is to humanize white women but that they’re still a huge threat of oppression at the end of the day.
That awkard outro was awesome, loved it.
I don't have any particular things I want to see, because you tend to bring things into my field of view that I wouldn't see otherwise. But I will leave a comment with my fingers for the algo
i’m so glad this popped up on my recommended
My executive dysfunction says "thank you" for reminding me that I still need to schedule a time to catch up on Pose aaaa haha. 🙈 also algorithm lalala
The Landlord character really rubbed me the wrong way when I first watched... one of many reasons why I preferred the first season over the second.
Just discovered your channel,I love it!
Stephanie Mills, Never knew love like this before makes me tear up everytime now. This show is great!
Love Pose and love your analysis 👍
They’re so well articulated
Criminally undersubbed
That jamila jamil graphic 🙈😩😬
Great analysis. I haven't seen pose, but it's on my list, and has now moved wayyyy up
I love Pose so much as a whole, but season 2 SO clearly fired the actual people from the ball scene who were consulting on season 1 and I do think the show went a little off the rails because of it. Thanks for the great analysis!
more vids like this, please, that, more specifically, talk about the push for more free housing.
I first was introduced to pose by using scenes and covers of the show for dynamic pose references in my art
"A mainstream show on Netflix was never going to so far as to state that buying up property and charging people to live in it is a bad thing, so with this in mind, it's still really refreshing to see a landlords a villain and some of the associated evils out in full."
Okay, but...like...I know that's not ALL season 1 of Daredevil was about, but like, the slum-lordism, rent extraction, evictions, and deliberately poor maintenance for the sake of bundling lots together for further consolidation/ housing/land market manipulation or somesuch were all fairly relevant AND featured prominently enough that, to me, the writers/creators seemed to be making the point that there IS real-world villainy, that letting such folks do as they please has dire consequences, and that, thus, they require opposition.
"I imagine, that by itself would probably have pissed off a lot of viewers who own property." As I recall, season 1 did indeed ruffle a few feathers!
great vid!!! pose is great and fun for all the reasons you said but some of the writing on the show is wacky as hell.
Nice video good work thank you
Love this take!!
how the hell did i miss Pose?? definitely going to watch it this weekend...
I don’t know who you are but you seem pretty badass so I subscribed
Can we appreciate that they made a banger of a pewdiepie/boyinaband diss rap !? Like you guys know they make music too?
Yes
Ryan Murphy makes shows for huge corporate networks. This makes complete sense. 😂
YIKES that Jameela quote 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I agree that scene with Fredfrika in the prison was completely out of nowhere, and nowhere didn't make any sense
im so confused because in mexico theres only 2 seasons of pose and this is not one of them, i wonder if it didnt do well in the states
Yeah, new video
Pose wasn’t a Netflix original, it was on FX. Idk if that answers anything for you but maybe it will give you insight idk
Great video
Damn, my mind expanding every day!
'in this field of ... .... "work"' ROFL
oh wow, I love this insight.
I didn’t realize how conditioned I’ve been to jump cuts after every sentence until I breathed a sigh of relief when you didn’t do that
Interesting video.
Ooooh~
This is the first time I have ever felt seen or shown in a show
i actually totally forget this character in the show, though she did have a part to play, i felt she was mostly insignificant to the main character's lives, so i didn't mind this girlboss character, though i see these points and they are valid. perhaps this character isn't really that important enough in the show to pay dust.
Your videos are so fucking good
