Ikr... Totally soul. That kid should try giving it a bodysurf, too - particularly when having trouble making it out with a board. There's caves down in the reef that you can swim down into - and wait out some of the detonation going-on above you... It can be really fun, too.

If the flotation is holding you back punching out, going-down and getting outside... Try bodysurfing it! There's holes down in the reef. You can swim down - and chill-out below all the havoc!

Try paddling out from the left of the take off spot at Pipe and let the current take you to the channel. Good effort, at least you tried.

This has been your best Vlog to date. The reality of surfing pipe. It's not all fun and games and glorious tube rides. That was the session that separates the men from the boys.

Watching this vlog reminds me how much I need to warm up my lumbar scapulosis before surfing.
I am not sure how to reach Nathan but as a retired So Cal surfer after a back surgery shut me down 25 years after I first learned how at North Jetty in Oceanside, CA I would like to thank you for the You Tube vids. You are a totally such a quality bro as I watch you surf Chopes and the North Shore and many other spots. I never made it to the north shore but through all of the collective video's I've learned a ton about a place I dreamed about going to most of my early years in life "Pipeline." The movement of the water is reminiscent of storm surge during U.S. East Coast hurricanes (Flagler & Cocoa Beach were great spots in the 80's/90's). We used to seek out the rip currents and jump into them to carry us out past the froth and inner breaks. I remember not being able to stand in ankle-deep water because the sand would be washed out from under your feet in just seconds if you stood still. Paddle out 200-300 yds., catch a wave, and find yourself (literally 1-2 MILES) down the beach by the time you caught a wave and bailed. Best memories of my LIFE!!

Really love the style of the surfing clips, intense music, wipeouts rescues and bail outs. Thats was surfing a big day is like, not some happy tune and perfect barrels all the time.

Great clip guys. Billabong used to have an ad campaign that went only a surfer knows the feeling., and it was a guy standing in ahuge barrell at pipe or doing a bottom turn at massive sunset. Not evry surfer will get to do that intheir life but every surfer knows what its like to try paddle out somewhere and get swamped by the rip and have to do the walk of shame. I love the reality of your videos with the training and all the hard stuff that it takes to do what you do. Keep it up

Yeeeeeew! Glad to be able to witness the madness at pipe. That wave continues to prove itself as a dangerous beauty. Also worth noting is that insane recovery from Mason on that one wave.
On a side note, I think it's good that you delve more into different topics, when to duck dive vs when to bail. Youd think à duck dive was successful until you realize maybe it was better to bail as you're going over the falls lol. Keep pushing them vids!

Looking at some of those beautiful frothy 2nd reef open-faced roll-ins...reminds me of a conversation that I had with Pat Curren at Shipwrecks (Cabo) in the earlier 1990's... I'd heard that he and a few of the other early N. Shore chargers used to Bodysurf Pipeline - in the days before it was considered a "surfable" wave (in part because - GNARLY!!! - and of course in part because guys were riding 50+ lb. logs... Until the first guy [¿John Peck?] made one - people regarded Pipe as a suicide mission)... He confirmed that he and some others used to bodysurf those kinds of perfect 2nd Reef bombs - but that they'd usually pull-out, before it hit the first and detonated. As someone who loves bodysurfing - and big Pipe - I'd suggest that people should give it a go...

I have not surfed Pipeline on the North Shore. I have been blessed surfing a place called CA Pipeline. It does not break epic often but on big south swells from the right degrees. It goes off ! Double overhead thick square barrels. Tripods with big zoom lenses on the shore and not too crowded. Wake up to the sound like thunder in the distance and find it going off. Many not paddling out seeing itfor good reason. The best barrels I have had anywhere that areway more hardcore and memorable. You have to get up quick and make some speed . No time for big bottom turns worked for me and most to all others I have seen.Only gets its best about 6 times a year I bthink!
