*tl:dr?* I love Hellblade as a game. But jeez, can we get some quality control with video game reviews these days? This video discusses the problems that arose with Hellblade due to its day-1 launch embargo, the bounty of misinformation that was flooding UA-cam, and the problems associated with rushed Hellblade reviews.
You are right. But the changes that would need to happen won't. And smart consumers won't happen either but it is refreshing to see a few people not exploiting others for a quick buck.
Reviews are dead long time ago and should be ignored anyone with 3 digit IQ can conclude this. Kotaku said for example that pillars writing is superb even obsidian said otherwise so yeah....
I'll save you 6 minutes: He believes Ninja Theory's lack of sending out free review copies for people to make content and profit from, is a 'REAL' problem with Hellblade
no he's not. It's about that reviewers got keys only on release of game, leading to many rushed reviews with false statements so they can grab views first.
What about the overly cryptic puzzles that absolutely kills your buzz? The game's an atmospheric masterpiece, and the combat mechanics is pretty great. But the damn puzzles, wtf were the devs thinking? Do it once, ok, twice, fine...But the whole damn game?
ua-cam.com/video/zS6wHzwUDI4/v-deo.html ^ i had to nerd out on this and from 7:25- 8:00ish they talk about how the events and combat are real. The viking enemies are real and she's actually fighting them. She simply perceives them as demonic and hellish due to her condition (based on past trauma). I am so glad they clarified that lol. There's something kinda distasteful about it literally being her tripping out by herself fighting imaginary battles. Especially since she's covered in cuts at the end
@@joeberger3441imma watch this cause I been so lost even after just finishing hellblade 2 which was great sadly it was to short but your comment made me kind of understand now those things we were fighting weren't as they appeared they were just vikings attacking her people but she seen them as demons or whatever because of her psychosis imma go watch
Wait, so the problem with the game is that they didn't release an early copy to reviewers to review beforehand, and so reviewers rushed their own work and produced half-assed results? I'm sorry, what the actual fuck? How is that a problem with the game or its developers if professional critics weren't professional with their work? Sure, a game-breaking bug like the one you mentioned probably should have been caught early on by the devs, I'll give you that much. It definitely needs a patch to fix it. But other than that, what exactly is wrong with the game itself? What you describe here is not a problem with the game, but rather with professionals not acting that way, but just trying to be the first to get a review out.
he talked shit about people making half assed reviews and talked shit about company which didnt give him a free early copy so he could put a day 1 review and he is being like he is the mightiest person in the world i didnt like this guy first and last video from him for me lol
wizardkevin101 generally, the early reviewer copies are a dickmove in my opinion. Yeah, I get it, they are supposed to help get the games sold to more people, because they can see ingame footage, but on the other hand if a game's marketing campaign and trailers aswell as ingame footage from the publishers themselves won't sell the game to me, some dude who got a free copy won't sell it to me either.
just finished it and what an absolute spectacular experience, so much love for Ninja taking a huge risk with this. hopefully this turns into a finacial success for them!
I wanna talk about this game, this seems like a good place to say something My expectations of the game was way off, these are the guys that did DmC and Heavenly Sword let's not forget. It was mostly due to the latter that I expected a hack and slash, Heavenly Sword, Hellblade you see where I am going with this. So I was surprised with what the game was, but it was very enjoyable. The story is amazing, at its essence it is someone struggling to get over the death of a loved one, but add in the mental illness and this game took that common story to a whole other level. This world and story she creates thinking she could free the soul of Drillion. Without spoiling the end, it all tied in well at the end of the story and that final fight was perfect, I wanted more but in hindsight it was absolutely perfect. The puzzles in the game are awesome and echo the whole mental illness aspect of the story, they are confusing. And that is what makes them awesome, they are not that challenging, they are not frustrating, they are confusing (remember our protagonist has a mental illness) Sound design, oh where do I start. The voices in MY head kept nattering away. She's lost, no we are not, go back, we don't know where to go, what's that?, look behind you, hahahaha, where do we go, no not there, you are going to die here, yes we are, go though the door, we have to go back and on and on and on, coming from every direction, constantly going on and on they where both useful and frightening, they took over the job of a HUD, a map, mission markers, enemy attack prompts etc and they where in MY head. I can't stress that enough, if you played the game with headphones you know what I mean when I say my head Combat is what I expected from the game as explained before, and yet the combat system felt rewarding and cinematic. Countering one opponent so you could hit him, finishing him off using your focus to quickly run towards another enemy knee him in the face, slice him up, hear a voice say "behind you" dodge another voice says "focus" so you stop time and finish him. It didn't have Devil May Cry level of depth to combat, but what it did have felt just as rewarding as a complex Devil May Cry combo TL;DR - Great story, good combat, amazing sound, puzzles felt relavent. Oh and the theme of the mental illness falls into all of the above, yes even combat
Headphones are great for this game. I used my surround sound and it disturbed my neighbors a bit. I jumped a lot and actually felt like I was her which is great immersion. In fact the only other game to immerse me like that was The Evil Within. Grizzly atmosphere, with bleak underpinnings allowed my senses to be temporarily tricked at times in believing I was actually in purgatory/hell facing these forces of mayhem. Looking forward to the second one.
@@CrAzYGAMINGWOLF In a overloaded game market like today's I can't imagine anyone but a spoiled kid saying something like that. We can't buy all the games, kiddo. We gotta know which ones are worth it. Demos used to be great at showing what a game was really about. Not sure why they stopped making them.
@@rachi7629 Who says I'm buying all the games? I'm just saying that people's opinions differ, so you can't trust reviews. You need to trust your third eye.
Look, I get what you're saying, I really do, but it also sounds like "they are kicking their own ass by not giving people like me special treatment"...just saying.
People shouldn't get early review copies/codes. I can make an exception for big gaming magazines like Game Informer or something along those lines, but in this day and age way way way too many people are getting early copies of stuff and it feels less like it's so they can review it and more like they're part of some elite group who's opinion is worth more than the rest of us. I guess I'm probably overreacting but I don't think that early copies should be THAT important. The fact that so many fumbled and got things wrong, or didn't give themselves time to even take in the game to properly review it, shows how desperate certain people are just to be first. Not to get it right and give us an honest opinion, but just so that they can be one of the only voices on the subject. If this power was put in the hands of everyone (i.e. we all have the same release date) then we would truly know who wants to give us their honest opinion, and who just wants to be ahead of the line and/or gets salty that they didn't get special treatment this time. We should all collaborate, all say what we think of things, and within all of our own voices and opinions a clear picture will emerge, sure as shit.
There is no perma-death. It is only stated in the game to scare the player. It is revealed nearing the end of the game when Senua stated "The darkness was a lie." Basically saying whatever is on your arm is not there and is not gonna reset the game on you if you're too much of a scrub :p
Hi thanks! I just want to ask if you know y , i died few times in zhe boss fight valrvn, the next day i tried playing again, but the door is already closed. No flashes either on the door symbols.. i was trapped and had to restart again. 😪 thank you in advance
Shits on the game because he didn’t get early access...smh, it’s a great game for the price and yes it has some bugs but what game has been perfect since launch?
P. Spit poor sales because most people on Xbox don’t have interest in games of its caliber. It’s easily the best experience on Game Pass too. Yes, it has bugs. But it’s far from boring and if you’re willing to dig deep into it, there’s so much more beneath the surface. I doubt you’re willing to listen to any of that though.
P. Spit because it’s not a triple a game? Because it’s already been out nearly 2 years? I get you weren’t a fan but no need to make your self look like such a dumbass
I get what you're saying, but I also think that the people who rush out their content to get out in front, is THEIR decision and deserve a good amount of the blame. They don't have to rush out that stuff, they just choose to do so. We all probably understand their selfish reasons to do so, but again, they are at fault for choosing to do so imo.
The fault lies with the impatient reviewers but his point is it could have been avoided entirely by ninja theory if they gave out review copies in advance
I agree the problem is more with the attitude of reviewers. Even with a embargo everybody had exactly the same chance to do a proper review and release it on time. If the game was released to content creators 2 weeks earlier: so what? still there would have been those who rush through. It is only unfortunate that a game gets bad press due to it, but again, the reviewers who rush their content are to blame, not the devs
THANK YOU! I'm a huge fan of Worth a Buy; RARELY does he have his reviews (often well over 10 minutes in length whether he loves or hates it, usually like 15-20) out by launch day, you don't see many of his guys screeching about it. People need to not only stop preordering, but just can all prerelease hype and basically just operate as if a game doesn't come out until about a week after it actually does. FIXED.
I don't really see Worth-a-buy as a reviewer, he draws too much from his own opinion... I mean fair enough, he's a funny guy but he barely likes ANYTHING. I can't rely on him to determine whether or not i should buy a game because his videos are never impartial, he's not ideal to help determine what games you'd like yourself.
I just got around to playing this game a week back, and it completely gripped me. I loved the puzzles, the story, the way the voices and hallucinations were integrated into the gameplay, it was just all something very different. It felt very genuine and fresh and it got me very invested very quickly. Most videogames don't do that for me, nowadays. But damn hellblade knew what it set out to do and just did it so well. If you haven't played it yet, give it a go, guys!
No offense, but you made a video about missinformations and lack of competent reviews. But in the end you are not clearing out these misinformations. You answered only 1 of your questions. Now is there a permadeath mechanic or not?
@@PetersaberHD Are you serious? I got stressed and turned down the difficulty to avoid having to restart the whole game after i died 5 times in combat early on (didnt know the controls well but i figured it out). I guess it worked then.
@@PetersaberHD Yeah that would turn a lot lot of people away from the game i think. But now i know that i could've just left it on the normal difficulty
That moment when you're bitching about the quality of other reviewers while using click bait titling for your own video. :D I get what you're saying but... this is why we can't have nice things - pretty much.
"If I wanted to make money on UA-cam, id post a half ass review..." Mins later after many unanswered questions and judgements almost as pretentious as the game itself "Donate to my patreon guyz!!!" You're a real winner pal.
Last christmas I was shopping for gifts for my younger brothers and I came around Hellblade. I'd never heard of it despite it winning a ton of prestigious prizes and awards! I wasn't up to date with the gaming world but still... My brothers play Xbox and I play on the Switch... At home I watched some gameplay and I was blown away. I wanted to go back and buy the game but never did. Earlier this year Hellblade was announced for the Switch and I bought and downloaded it on release day. This game is just....perfect. I'm a huge Skyrim fan and Hellblade reminds me of Skyrim....an 8 hour long dungeon of Skyrim! I love Hellblade, I love the character, the gameplay, the story, the riddles (usually not a big fan of that) and it's also the first time that I noticed that a character is evolving and growing over the game. It's hard to explain but it feels like Senua really learns to handle her darkness and it's relatable.
i'm kinda exited to get this game. im a guy who has had psychosis. i was diagnosed as a schizophrenic at one point before they re diagnosed me as having anxiety disorder which caused my hallucinations and super paranoia. id love to see how they framed it.
Nexus They actually spoke with a number of sufferers to get as real a take as they could. They included them during the making of the game as well to get feedback along the way.
Im sure who've played it by now. Im diagnosed Bpd. And have had some psychosis in the past. This game was amazing. Im so happy i played it. It explains what many of us go throw. I hope you found it as wonderful as i did
MH has lots of tangents, it’s difficult to give an exact diagnosis, I never realised that anxiety could cause psychosis, thank you for your enlightenment 👍
I played this game on my Ryzen 5 2400G with dedicated RX-580 4GB and Sandisc SSD drive at the highest setting without a problem. The graphics and sound are simply amazing. It took me over 20 hours but I did die several times and took my time when walking around because it is such a beautiful environment. I did not see any glitches or bugs but they could be there. From what I heard there is now an updated version 1.1 on Steam and other platforms.
My brother says this game give him kind of anxiety was it the case with as well?I watch cutscenes of this game and honestly it was disturbing and immersive with a fantastic voice actress
@@Nathan-Croft It made me nervous as hell but that is the intention of the game: letting you experience what people with these kind of mental health issues experience every day. Most people were freaked out by the part in the dark but not me. I was born in a rural area and loved to wander the forest in the dark when I was a child. My dad always used to say: if you can't see them, they can't see you. And that is exactly how Senua's guide, the voice over, comforts her. For me the most scary part was wading through the pools of blood in hell and all the piles of corpses which were still half alive and moving. Meanwhile you have to fight the continuously respawning demons which never seems to end and those voices are driving you insane. Imo it was the best game since The Witcher 3 and that was released in 2015 ! Amazing that a small indie game developer company of less than 20 people could make a game of this quality. I hope they will make a sequel or another similarly good game.
Yes i mostly know about how this game is.I also live in a rural area but darkness sometimes affects, if i listen to a horror story in the dark, that's scary for me.I did not like Witcher 3 at all tbh.But there are games that you'd probably like for example Uncharted 4 is a masterpiece or Detroit become a human if like those movie type experiences i certainly loved these games a lot.
@@Nathan-Croft Shows we are all different, I loved the Witcher 3 and Nier Atomata. I do not game very much and I am not very good at it, maybe that is why I like the ones with a good story in it. I will give Uncharted 4 a go, maybe it is on sale somewhere. Thanks!
They really should've marketed it much better. I've already seen way too many people jump into this game expecting some hack n slash action game. The title of the game doesn't help with that either. Not to mention when ever they showed off the game, the main thing they showed was the combat which misled a lot of people. I watched a streamer yesterday that bought the game expecting a DMC style action game. An hour later he shut the game off, said it was "fucking boring," and called it a walking sim. There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has their own opinions but it's things like this why I just wish they would've explained what the game was better. It's definitely not a game for everyone. Just my two cents. *Edit:* I want to make a correction by saying I was wrong about saying they mainly showed combat in the videos. Dev diaries explain it much better. I apologize for that mistake. However the point still stands that they should've done a better job marketing the game. Not everyone watches dev dairies. You can say that's their own fault for not doing research but the average gamer isn't gonna go through extensive research so they can get a game. They see the name "Hellblade," and watch a trailer and expect a action game. Can you really blame them? I hardly saw any ads for this game before release and the ones that were there don't really say "hey this isn't an action game btw." I understand that they don't have a huge budget but man I feel they could've done a much better job explaining the game through ads.
I think it's oddly fitting that in the end the reviews were so untrustworthy, and hence paranoia inducing, as the things you encounter in the game itself.
He literally just reviewed the game though. In the video, he said he most definitely recommends the game, talked about the basics, about the combat too, and wrapped it up. Perhaps you didn't watch the whole video? Even though it was pretty short. :C
I pre-ordered on Playstation Store a few weeks ago. It downloaded. I played. There was one glitch that happened to me. I was in the castle with a torch. I avoiding going the route of where you have to go through water and swim beyond a small gate. I took an alternative route. Somewhere on the spiral steps I sudden fall down to the area I was going to. Somehow I and torch were unharmed. Lucky for me that was the only bug/glitch I experienced during my time playing the game. This game is just awesome and it took me by surprise how much I enjoyed it. I am not going to lie but the fighting wasn't my cup of tea but I got use to it. Dodging and blocking are your friends. Also being able to slowing down time...made the combat fun for me. I wish it was a bit longer but it didn't hurt my enjoyment of the game.
Just completed hellblade awesome game. I’m going to play through again. I have mental health issues and ninja Theory did a great job with hellblade because I can relate to suana conditions. Keep up the good ninja Theory and I hope they will be a dlc of some kind.👍🏻
I love this game, even though I normally hate games that are somewhat like interactive movie (Which I can't say that's what this is because it really doesn't feel that way) but this game does it so damn well, once you get sucked in it doesn't let go, every step you take advances the story. There's no hallways that only serve as filler between cutscenes, it's all very fluid and natural. The sound design is the best I've experienced but it's also the only time I've enjoyed playing a game with headphones (which might be something I need to change and start doing it with other titles if it really makes that big of a difference like it does in Hellblade). The combat is fun and very personal, the puzzles at the beginning in the area full of illusions was the only time I didn't enjoy the puzzles and after that they were great, imo. What I like the most is what they done with Senua and just her as a person. I couldn't help but get emotional for her during alot of scenes, she's extremely vulnerable but at the same time extremely capable. She's one of my all time favorite fictional characters, definitely in my top 3 which says alot considering the game took only around 10h to beat on my first run. Ninja Theory has really outdone themselves and for me this has raised them up there with CD P-Red. I hope other Devs learn something from this, there's no substitute for a game that was made by people who actually give a fuck about what they're doing instead of only caring about the money(Looking at you SquareEnix, ya cunts).
Played through - loved it. Senua's irl actor is soo cute omg I'm in love.. there will be speedruns because a universal door glitch just pooped up and a wall barier skip.. I can't wait. Took me around 6 hours of chill paced gameplay.. maybe a bit more. It's a game worth playing.
I just played it 3 years later, HOLY HELL IT WAS SO DAMN GOOD! When I was done, I just sat with my stream saying “Wow” over and over. Beat it in one day. So damn good with the best game I have played in years.
I've bought the game on my own accord. I haven't read the ratings or any review whatsoever. I just loved the trailer and I really into this kind of psychologic story driven games. I have played this game in exact 7.2. The only thing I am pretty dissapointed with was the ending. [SPOILER] I fought thousands of enemies respawning around "Hella" and I had this goddamn God killer sword only to realise I have to "let go and die" to reach the end. All this time you had overcome any thoughts of giving up on your BF and then what gets you is the moral of letting go of the dead? Man I had a God killer sword. I really wanted to force Hella or kill her! I just wished they added two endings for that moment.
Amen brother! Amen! Only finally got my hands on this game in 2019, and i have to say the experience was unlike any other. It even brought me to dig more into the subject of mental illness(Cause honestly it's a fascinating subject). Also the connection you feel having with Senua and what she's going through is just amazing.
*spoilers The final "boss" really pissed me off. I was fighting wave after wave of enemies for at least 20 minutes not knowing that I was suppose to let Senua die. Other then that,I really enjoyed the game.
In my opinion I think that it was meaningful, I guess, I looked it as if Senua had to fight until she could, because she wanted to keep fighting for Dillion, the voices were telling her to let it go away, obviously as a player you will keep fighting no matter what.
@@wwld9823 yeah but the voices tell you several times before to stop, to not go forward, or to not open a door. Anyway, that final segment is awesome, it's very symbolic and powerful.
That whole scene, judging by the single voice seems like it might almost simply be Senua's subconscious. Regardless I kept fighting until I couldn't take them anymore. The whole thing of the new sword killing enemies in less hits made it feel more powerful and dramatic
I'm late to the party, cause I just bought this game for the switch. Incredible experience, and the focus on mental illness, and how others may have trouble because of these diseases like psychosis. Great video.
Great video. This is a business... and consumers rely on reviews more than their own intuition. I actually kind of miss the days when you could only use the box art and publisher to make a decision about what game to try. Game rentals were great for that too. Thanks for offering some insight to the confusion!
I finished it a couple of days ago and never encountered any issues as I took my time wanting to experience Senua's journey at my own pace and tbh I'm glad I did. I've only looked at reviews since completing it, for the small budget it's been one of my favourite games this year and I rank it up there with Horizon Zero Dawn for a gripping story and incredible realised world. I hope it gives NT the financial success they deserve, I want to go on another journey with Senua so badly.
Some might be disappointed that the game turned out to be different than they expected. But the good thing about how they showed only action sequences before release and did the embargo thing is that the game stayed a real surprise and not everything got spoiled by the internet, like it happens with every other game. I also don't have a problem with the fact that there's no perma death because I didn't know it. It had the desired effect on me as a player, although there was no perma death.
I ran into a bug myself on last night's stream. I was fighting the darkness (that big skin dog) and was killed due to a distraction. When the game loaded up again, I had no sword. I also learned one thing from the experience. And that is--that Senua can take a lot of damage. I was in there for a bit taking hits and dodging from the monster for so long that I thought it was part of the game. I finally gave up and reset the game and that is when my sword came back up.
I like how you amounted all day 1 reviews to "sweet youtube money". A bit too early to play the high horse gig I think. Also quality control with game reviews?, really?, you're going to assume you're the epitome of review perfection and before you say "no", take a look at other reviews first and look at your own. Also the game is far from perfect, so don't go trying to find reasons to label people as stupid or wrong for just not clicking with the game the way you do.
I finally got to play Hellblade now that it was given a physical release. I didn’t experience any glitches or game breaking bugs, so I’ll assume they got those issues fixed on this release. After having finished it...yeah...it’s truly a unique and haunting experience. Definitely recommended to anyone that is looking for something that’s off the beaten path. If I had one complaint: Sometimes those balance beam segments got me. Not sure if I wasn’t moving slowly enough or if the sixaxis controls were being used (I was twisting my controller this way and that because it felt as if they were). Bravo to Ninja Theory.
So youtube reviewers suck at there "job" so that's some how ninja theorys fault? And i never saw the jim sterling review, mainly because after awhile you begin to pick up on who shouldn't be taken seriously
I played through the majority of the game without knowing that there's block, heavy attack, and melee buttons, I just used light attack and dodge until I paused the game and realised that a bunch of controls were listed. I didn't think to try any of the other buttons during combat because I was worried about screwing up and dying. However, I still really REALLY enjoyed every bit of it, and once I knew about the other parts of combat, the game got 5x better from an already near perfect score in my eyes.
imo hellblade's just repetetive, puzles are boring, the game runs extremely well (i have a midspec pc and i ran the game in ultra just fine) and looks amazing but there are so many things wrong with it, you cant remap keys, you cant change the FOV so if you get motion sick from low FOV's tough luck. some may say it gets better the longer you play it but i say, im not going to play 6 boring hours to enjoy 2 afterwards.
this looks right up my alley. i appreciate you taking the time to give some solid feedback on this as i was on the fence about it. I never even knew it existed until it popped up in my suggested area on steam. ive been hoping for a solid cinematic experience in a game. it feels like there just arent enough games like this. im definitely gonna pick this up now and download it. thanks again for all your quality content.
I gave this game a chance and played for something like 3 hours but really it`s just a circle jerk, get to area, look for runes, go to next area look for more runs rinse and repeat. It got boring really fast and combat is somewhat lacking, you cant feel your weapon weigh and fights are very repetetive.
Unfortunately my friend PC gaming is going through a very decadence era with all of those story driven walking simulators, let's hope that the end of those experiments will come soon, but I doubt it cause all of those hipster retards who want to be "emotional" and "connected" and praising these "games" like god send and giving them a 9/10 or 10/10 after the second day of release...
Yeah, story, voices, acting, atmosphere is top notch in hellblade even tho graphic is really blurry most of the time, but this game lack gameplay depth and I dont know If I will ever be able to cope with lack of intresting gameplay mechanics.
Welcome to the world of mental illness. Newsflash: It sucks to have one. Imagine if you had to go through your whole life like that and couldn't just put down the controller and walk away.
tyr8338 something doesn't mean that needs to have shitty gameplay. And the game doesn't give anything that interesting to play, it's just walking, solving the same puzzle, repeat and occasionaly get to fight an enemy and even that's shitty.
I really enjoyed it. As you mentioned - it's a great quality game for half the price, and what drew me to it is its creepiness. If you enjoy creepy games that you can play in the dark and give yourself a lingering fear, this is the game for you. What I find interesting is most of the creepiness comes from sound, not visuals (thogh there are plenty of those as well. Hearing vague voices around you and echoes down the hallway sends chills down my spine, and the perma-death mechanic forcefully keeps me on my toes, because unlike other games, you actually stand to lose something if you fail too many times, which makes the fear more real (unlike other games where you can "test" the monsters by running at them because you know you will just reload at a check point if you fail/die). I bought the game and I do not regret it. Yes, it has limitations (such as shortness and lack of complexity when it comes to controls and features - i.e. the combat is always the same, just with tougher enemies), and I was not a fan of integrating live-action video into the game for preposition and story telling, but overall the pros heavily outweigh the cons.
I love 6-8 hour linear experiences in games. Miss this from times when we had not many large open worlds and 'do whatever you want' stuff wasn't quite there yet. It helps to focus on story telling instead of super complicated gameplay elements. I play video games for story first, then for gameplay. On a side note I am more interested in the atmosphere and Nordic mythology then Senua's character in this game.
The real problem? THE REAL PROBLEM? sorry mate but thats not even close to the "real" problem in hellblade. If you ask me the worst thing in the game is the constant search for runes. You barely walk 5 m and there's another door which is locked by another rune or more runes. For 75% of the game you do nothing but walking around looking for these damn runes. It totaly ruined the game for me. I know there are a lot of good things in the game like the presentation of the mental illness or the detailed hero etc. but still looking for runes non-stop is just too boring for me and im sure others feel the same way.
Ah that part really didn't bother me, I mean hell I was used to the Arkham games getting all the riddler trophies, so the search for runes was rather refreshing compared to those.
I knew people wouldnt like the puzzles, its really annoying. I think if it was just 1 level cool. Then the next level fix the visuals (like fix the bridge) then the next level go through the door to see a new way (like facing the illusion god). If they mixed it up along with new enemies it would have been better, this game was repetitive and drawn out.
performance is actually SOLID. AMD FX-4350 / GeForce GTX 750 Ti 25-45 fps at MAX settings, 50-60 fps at low settings. and to be honest, lowering the settings doesn't seem to degrade quality by much. my greatest concern with this game, on the technical side, is negative mouse acceleration. it doesn't make the game unplayable (Dark Souls trained me, after all), but it does detract from the experience. another problem is the lack of graphics options within the game. I had to look up tweak guides on the web and manually edit configuration files. however, I have to point out the absolutely phenomenal anti-aliasing. I don't think I've seen a better implementation of it for the past 5 years worth of games.
It was made by Ninja Theory? They also made the DMC Reboot that I am currently playing through...wish they would make another one if only the DMC fanboys didn't bitch and moan because "OMG, THEY CHANGED THE MAIN CHARACTER TOO MUCH"
that wasn't the only problem with it. Nobody wanted or saw the need for a reboot except someone at Capcom, everyone wanted more backstory to Nero and how it would connect Vergil to the Order of the Sword, people wanted a continuation to that that not a reboot. DMC4 is the best selling DMC game wich clearly shows people were invested in Nero and there was no reason for a reboot, DMC4 perfected it's combat aswell, wich without a doubt was dumbed down in the reboot, further more th original concept for Dante in the reboot was almost a 100% digital creation of one of the Developers, didn't look like Dante, didnt expressed as Dante, you were playing the Producer Avatar not Dante, all these choices ofcourse made a negative impact in the fanbase because there was no need to change anything, just add more to what was DMC4 and carry the series forward. You don't do a reboot after your best performing game in the series, that would be like Rockstar rebooting GTA after GTA V's success, it would be like rebooting Uncharted after Uncharted 2 or example. There wasn't any necessity for a reboot. As cringy and cheesy as the main DMC games can be the reboot was even worse, there's a whole F U exchange dialogue, that's just lazy writting that none of previous DMC games has, who writes and thinks that a long F U exchange is dialogue in a game?
SouSporting DMC4 isn't the best one in my opinion . DMC 3 is for me . But other than that you do have a point that the reboot wasn't necessary . But still it was a good reboot
Gurriato Sagaz I'm not pretending . I bought the game .played it . And enjoyed it and I even played the DLC which was great too . If you think it's shit that's fine everyone have different opinions but Don't tell me to kill myself because I liked a game that you didn't like
Thank you for speaking up. Multiple reviewers got a core mechanic of the game wrong, proving everyone claiming the same wrong thing either - hasn't played through the game before reviewing it, - has not paid any attention to the story, - has copied his claims from other reviews, - or a combination of the above 3. The game itself deserved objective reviews. But due to UA-cam's and Gaming journalism's current state, and the timing of the review embargo, this was not to be. I loved this game a lot and I am sorry but I have to blame Jim Sterling on a lot of the problems and pure lies that many day-1 reviews are spitting out. Many people will never buy Hellblade because of an untrue review they saw - listing the [VERY MINOR SPOILER] rot mechanic as a negative point in order to explain their better-safe-than-sorry approach of generally reviewing games day 1 - games they have not even played through yet, as to get more of that sweet UA-cam money. Thank you for what you are doing.
This game was boring as fuck. Amazing story but damn was it boring, they should've invested more money into it and put more effort in the combat but keep all the story elements as they are. If it had amazing gameplay along side the story and maybe a prettier main protagonist and this would've been a 10/10 game.
What you describe as bad about this game is exactly the reason I like it so much. If it tried to be what you're suggesting it should be then I don't think it would work as well. There is no reason to drag the game out with more combat sequences nor does she need to be given more combat skills than she already has. Yes, they are simplistic but she's not superhuman, that's the point. As far as the look of Senua, I like that she doesn't just look like a supermodel wearing face paint. The fact that she is so plain in physical appearance to the point where some might see her as ugly does a lot more to humanize the character in my opinion.
Wow everyone is so defensive about this game. Don't get me wrong I did like this game, just really boring at times especially the puzzles. I bought the game so I'm supporting Ninja Theory. If the game wasn't as niche it would've had more appeal. Wait really that's who its based on? What happen did they hire the guys from Andromeda? Jokes aside, besides the faces the game has some an amazing art style considering how small the team working on this was. But hey that's just my opinion.
Now i am 59 yrs old and have seen Hundreds if not thousand of reviews of various games from different Tuber's ..But you sir have the Best, and i do mean"THE BEST" Honest opinion of a game and the trouble with many of the Tuber's i have seen...yes i do watch videos alot and as i have stated..The Best has been found and i thank you so much!!..i Subbed and will be looking forward to new reviews..but in the mean time i have alot of BINGE watching to do of this New Reviewer by the name of "DOWNWARD THRUST" again TY for such and honest and informative and entertaining video!!!!!!
Just finished it and this is one of the greatest games i have ever played. Story was deep and intimate and the fighting was smooth and gripping. Ninja theory made an amazing reboot of devil may cry so for them to bring this out was amazing its just a shame it wasnt more published. Hopefully it starts to get way more light.
Good video, I guess that having a very small team working on the game comes with some time constraints, the director also said that they almost missed their release date on PSN because they had to resubmit the final code to Sony 3 times. But yeah, I really dislike the fact that some outlets treat game reviews like a sprint to the finish line, and not about the substance of their content.
Reminds me of the reviews for Dead Space 2 that said it ditched the horror for action with no atmosphere or scares - reviewers only played the first few chapters. After Chapter 5 the game goes back to the horror of the first game. It's actually kind of a strange game in that it changes its tone and genre quite drastically a third of the way into it, which is arguably interesting and refreshing in itself, but a lot of reviewers literally couldn't see past the first 5 of the 15 chapters. As for Hellblade, pre-ordering now on Xbox One.
I loved this game. I just finished it last night! Even though there are moments which I hated like flame segments where if, too slow, you die, overall I enjoyed this game.
Just wanted to say that he mentioned that there was "lack of marketing", probably referring to the fact that the game is digital only and not hard copy. The reason they did this was because NT is a small company and it's simply less expensive for them. They didn't need to advertise it that much because as you can see, being such a compelling game allows for new followers to spread the word about it themselves with how amazed they were. That's how I see it anyways. Finished the game over two weeks ago and am still watching videos about it because it was such a moving experience for me.
One of the reasons I still subscribe to a monthly review magazine is because they actually can put time into playing the game without having to rush to get the review out first.
As always, great content and an honest opinion. That's why I keep coming back to you for information, reviews and everything video game related. Keep up the excellent work man :D
I know this is 4 years old now, but I just played and beat the game for the first time today in 2 sittings (30-45 min break on pause). live Streaming the whole thing it took 8 hours total. Fantastic game. Beautiful combat mechanics and gameplay. Kept me on my toes the entire time. One of my favorite games I've played.
There is a small youtuber named Dane 5 who did a playthrough/walkthrough of this game, experincing it to the Max. I watched hos review of it and he loved this game, not just for the way it was made, but for the story it was telling. I recommend watching his playthrough/walkthrough of this game. 😁
I just finished it. It was alright. Not amazing, not terrible. I wish it would have changed things up a little. The rune puzzles got annoying. No bindable keys on PC, no fov either. Combat would've been better if you had stamina and it wasn't just button mashing. It was very interesting though
i don't think i've ever replied to a game review video review? this was one of the most articulate and entertaining reviews i've ever seen. not rump swabbing at all. just being honest. i actually per-ordered the game a week before it came out. (not really sure i know why i'd preorder something that you can't out of?) i had 3 reasons why. the screen capture i saw of the girls face intrigued me. the brief description i saw about the story captured my attention. it was done by the same people that made Heavenly Sword. the last reason was probably enough for me anyway. i just started the game and it already has me hooked. great review. thanks.
Thank you for your ethics on reviewing and game play information .I live this game just bought it 2 weeks ago I don't care how long it is to play i enjoy gaming to relax and utilize my brain for something other than criticism on how someone isn't doing this right or your doing it wrong or bitching how it could have been better..really can you do it ?I raised my daughter by myself got off meth addiction so I can be a father and 25 years later my daughter bought her first house .sorry just went off line lol thanks for your videos.
i just finished it, took me about 8 hours (first hour just walking around with my jaw dropped looking at textures and things). This is ONE OF THE best games i've played. It will come to the same shelf along with morrowind, vice city, mafia the city of lost heaven etc... Seriously, they did a great fucking job.
I love you man. All the effort you put in your videos and just your voice too are just so awsome i genuinely enjoy your videos. Thanks for making so much great videos and puting effort into every and each one of them.
I'm honestly so glad I read reviews saying the permadeath was real because I pretty much went into this game knowing nothing and a big part of the rot is that it is in her head. I played through constantly afraid my next death would knock me out and I'd have to start all over. I got so close to the rot reaching my head, I had to put the game away so I could calm myself and come back and think about a better way to tackle that battle. I really didn't want to start over. But even though the rot kept creeping and I kept dying, I kept getting up. And when you figure that out, you're not as afraid anymore and you just head straight into the fight fighting and fighting even as you're being told you don't have to keep fighting. Fucking hell, that was a brilliant feature in an amazingly made game! Damn!
From being someone who struggles with a psychosis disorder, this game was amazing but also a struggle and too fucking real for me. Took me a bit to finish but when I did was happy to be done with the voices and also sad because I missed them. They're as much as a part of her as mine were/are for me. It's scary to think there is someone trying to hijack your body and want to die just as much as you do just to get rid of them. And when they'd say you're stupid you're going to die I was a bit freaked out. And do you see the faces. These are things I personal struggle with sometimes everyday sometimes once a month. It varies. I commend this game for its realistic portrayal of it. There are different types and I am happy to say I'm not as bad as her. Iol
This is a fantastic point, and one that needs highlighted. UA-cam reviewers have often spoiled games for me with their clumsy and sometimes incredibly flippant and intolerant reviews of games. They no longer see games in the same light gamers do, but as a subject to pick apart and complete asap - as you pointed put - and many also want to clickbait people, so have some ridiculous tagline or sensationalise their review with a low rating of a critically acclaimed game, ie, Jim Sterling. Total Biscuit
I'm a bit late to the party, and just about ready to beat this game.... only reason I even started looking at reviews was to answer a couple questions without getting too many spoilers, and I was pretty surprised by all the negative reviews. Unless it's planning on just dropping the ball entirely here in the next hour or less of play that I have left, it's by far one of the best games to come out this year. Only reason it's not THE best is because I'd like it to be a bit longer and one other thing I won't spoil. Otherwise it's a very solid title that got a bad rap that it doesn't deserve.
Just finished the game and I have to say this is one of the most immersive and captivating experiences I've had in a long time. This game was disturbing and creepy on so many levels. The overall quantity of combat is on the lighter side when compared to most action/adventure/(living nightmare) games, but very gratifying when you beat a section. The story, combat, and experience gets better and better as you play. Overall, 9/10 IMO. Note that you definitely must use headphones/earbuds to get the full experience. It's just not the same over speakers.
Just finished the game. I mostly play games for story line (unless it's Nintendo or Smite or the like) and this story, being someone with mental illness expressed a lot of feelings I had going through similar situations growing up. I'm for sure going to be playing it again.
Jim Sterlings problem isnt a bug. Usually someone would have the common sense to relight a torch before moving onward. Reminds me of people who complain about not having enough ammo to use on a boss in a survival horror game because they used it all willy-nilly beforehand. Their fault, not the game's.
Good job on this game really appreciate the honesty and the time you took to play and review. This insight should be reviewed by publisher and developers to give reviewers enough time to do their job properly, and also giving them time to fix any issues. We even see this same issue with the vega cards.
i actually aspire to be a videogame critic and i totally agree with you many people and companies rush the game and make half assed reviews. when i finish my journalism mayor hopefully i can make a difference. you and gameinformer are my fav game channels btw :)
Well said . Originally i started going toUA-cam to get true reviews on games as I couldn't trust magazines anymore . Now UA-cam reviews are being rushed and aren't spot on now makes it even harder to see what a game is truly like
*tl:dr?* I love Hellblade as a game. But jeez, can we get some quality control with video game reviews these days? This video discusses the problems that arose with Hellblade due to its day-1 launch embargo, the bounty of misinformation that was flooding UA-cam, and the problems associated with rushed Hellblade reviews.
Downward Thrust "18 hours ago". I knew you were a fuckin time traveler
Downward Thrust TL:DW instead though right? But as always I'm just hyped for more of your content! *flies away*
You are right. But the changes that would need to happen won't. And smart consumers won't happen either but it is refreshing to see a few people not exploiting others for a quick buck.
Downward Thrust good vid
Reviews are dead long time ago and should be ignored anyone with 3 digit IQ can conclude this. Kotaku said for example that pillars writing is superb even obsidian said otherwise so yeah....
I will never blame a developer for the sloppy work of bloggers. They're not obligated to give free stuff to anyone.
Don't tell that to the UA-camrs they will scream at you
Spot on
Agreed! Developers giving free stuff dont support then in anyway...

Oh cool. Won't waste my time. Thanks.
Well... spoiler alert?
no he's not.
"What is real in Hellblade?" - Wondering about reality in a video game is a real Inception moment. Love it
ua-cam.com/video/zS6wHzwUDI4/v-deo.html
^ i had to nerd out on this and from 7:25- 8:00ish they talk about how the events and combat are real.
What you describe here is not a problem with the game, but rather with professionals not acting that way, but just trying to be the first to get a review out.
he talked shit about people making half assed reviews
and talked shit about company which didnt give him a free early copy so he could put a day 1 review
and he is being like he is the mightiest person in the world
i didnt like this guy first and last video from him for me lol
wizardkevin101 Touche
wizardkevin101 generally, the early reviewer copies are a dickmove in my opinion. Yeah, I get it, they are supposed to help get the games sold to more people, because they can see ingame footage, but on the other hand if a game's marketing campaign and trailers aswell as ingame footage from the publishers themselves won't sell the game to me, some dude who got a free copy won't sell it to me either.
This is exactly what he said if you bothered to finish the video. This comment is a perfect example of his point.
I'd hardly call the majority of UA-camrs he's referring to "professionals."
just finished it and what an absolute spectacular experience, so much love for Ninja taking a huge risk with this. hopefully this turns into a finacial success for them!
Hope so!
How long is a complete walkthru watch? 🤔
I love Nina too.
MrSamadolfo 7 to 8 hours.
I hope this game flops so nobody makes anything like it again. Waste of money even for 30 $
I wanna talk about this game, this seems like a good place to say something
My expectations of the game was way off, these are the guys that did DmC and Heavenly Sword let's not forget.
And that is what makes them awesome, they are not that challenging, they are not frustrating, they are confusing (remember our protagonist has a mental illness)
Sound design, oh where do I start. I can't stress that enough, if you played the game with headphones you know what I mean when I say my head
Combat is what I expected from the game as explained before, and yet the combat system felt rewarding and cinematic. Countering one opponent so you could hit him, finishing him off using your focus to quickly run towards another enemy knee him in the face, slice him up, hear a voice say "behind you" dodge another voice says "focus" so you stop time and finish him. It didn't have Devil May Cry level of depth to combat, but what it did have felt just as rewarding as a complex Devil May Cry combo
TL;DR - Great story, good combat, amazing sound, puzzles felt relavent.
I say screw reviwers, developers should let us the consumers try out demos of their games so we can from our own opinion.
Or just buy the game and have your own opinion.
@@rachi7629 Why back in my day, we didn't have online reviews. We just trusted our gut.
@@CrAzYGAMINGWOLFPeople back then also played demos, so, they could've kept making those
Look, I get what you're saying, I really do, but it also sounds like "they are kicking their own ass by not giving people like me special treatment"...just saying.
Replaying this game again - still a masterpiece. Seriously this game is incredible.
Wrong. Pacing is thrown off entirely by gateway puzzles that can leave players stuck in a loop.
Just admit that you're complaining about not getting review copies because you have to pay for games you review.
Xavier Ong well thanks for the spoiler, mate

Shits on the game because he didn’t get early access...smh, it’s a great game for the price and yes it has some bugs but what game has been perfect since launch?
@P. Spit laughing at your comment
@P. Spit Pretty bad game? It got 9/10 rating
P. Spit because it’s not a triple a game? Because it’s already been out nearly 2 years? I get you weren’t a fan but no need to make your self look like such a dumbass

@@joyuz6583 because not sending out free copies to reviewers is not an actual problem.
@@zenzonerzz4789 I wasn't paying too much attention to the video sorry
FIXED.
wait. Isnt worth a buy the guy who made a review about a game he didnt play and said its pay to win?
The permadeath mechanic is false. It's a tool to induce anxiety and fear into the player, while in reality, you can die however many times you want.
@@PetersaberHD Are you serious? I got stressed and turned down the difficulty to avoid having to restart the whole game after i died 5 times in combat early on (didnt know the controls well but i figured it out). I guess it worked then.

JD Phillips there where mental health professionals, consulting.
Thanks!
@@ingeborgsvensson4896 Uncharted 4 is for only Ps4 though.
Sweet Muffin Really love your profile pic
Yeah, also they really f'd up the whole permadeath thing.
Daniel W The things is, it's not a feature at all. Players have already tested it and has been debunked.
Daniel W it's not actually in the game you have been mislead gun
Good advertisement is a multi million dollar/euro investment and often studios just can't obtain such money without a publisher.
Thank you for being HONEST! I'm looking forward to playing this game.
I think it's oddly fitting that in the end the reviews were so untrustworthy, and hence paranoia inducing, as the things you encounter in the game itself.
this is a review of the reviews of hellblade and throwing shade. Seriously dude just review the game already.
He literally just reviewed the game though. In the video, he said he most definitely recommends the game, talked about the basics, about the combat too, and wrapped it up. Perhaps you didn't watch the whole video? Even though it was pretty short. :C

Cant wait for second one!! :)
You are not alone. Ive only played an hour or so because its so accurate it hurts...
It's a game worth playing.
this is one of my favourite games of all time, can't remember the last time i was so pulled in to a game.
The real problem is that you can't jump in the game. I legit feel suffocated when your supposed to be a fighter and can't freely jump.
Andy Velandus I think they were saying there was no Hela to rescue him from. The darkness was part of Senua and that's what she had to let go.
Did you really have a God Killer sword or did you just think you had one?
You do get a god killer sword, made by odin
Or...do you just THINK you did?... ;)
Yeah I wish we had a chance against Hela. But I really enjoyed the game. Played through it twice
This is still one of my favourite modern games. I loved everything about it and hope they really make a sequel worthy of the name.
Yeah, no. I have enough trouble being paranoid without playing this thanks.
just a small tip: use the running power attack almost exclusively and you can get through combat pretty easily.
Absolutely recommend this game. It is a rare unique experience!
*spoilers
The final "boss" really pissed me off.
The voices tell you to stop fighting
The lack of HUD and spoonfed instructions is a much welcomed change of pace in Hellblade. Obviously some just can't handle that much independence lol
I really love the idea of indie story with production quality..
I hope we keep seeing this approach.. the more options we get the better
And to defend Jim for giving 1* because he didnt get a early review code is even worse, UA-camrs aren't special
Best story based game I've played in years!!
Best game I have played in years! The story and the combat are both EPIC!!!!
I just finished it last night. It was a great experience. I could feel her desperation through each boss battle. It was a very moving game.
You leave just as much misinformation as other reviewers lol.. sort of ironic.
It had the desired effect on me as a player, although there was no perma death.
like buying a new car you don't know what got until (you drive it). p.s.. this is a very good ride!
Makes you part of the problem
this looks right up my alley. i appreciate you taking the time to give some solid feedback on this as i was on the fence about it.
People like games that are different. It's boring eating the same food everyday. However, some will get it right and some will get it wrong.
The order 1886 got nothing but shit for beeing a cinematic expirience and now this Game gets praised for that?
Darkness1984 exactly, but the order 1886 was 60 bucks.....way too short, no multiplayer. Too expensive for the content but I liked the game.
Absolutely love both games.
I love the order 1886 still on the fence with this game . Still it looks interesting and the price is good too.
The order was 60 bucks, this is 30 bucks and longer.
was 60 bux m8
Thank you for taking your time! It is appreciated.
just came to drop a dislike for the clickbate title. didnt even watch a second.
"didnt even watch a second".....How did you know it was "clickbait" then?
Because it is and people are not stupid
Martin Zsom that's one thing that makes me not want to get it
Same here :C
I don't feel the same way so try again
Ah that part really didn't bother me, I mean hell I was used to the Arkham games getting all the riddler trophies, so the search for runes was rather refreshing compared to those.
I knew people wouldnt like the puzzles, its really annoying. I think if it was just 1 level cool. Then the next level fix the visuals (like fix the bridge) then the next level go through the door to see a new way (like facing the illusion god). If they mixed it up along with new enemies it would have been better, this game was repetitive and drawn out.
performance is actually SOLID.
AMD FX-4350 / GeForce GTX 750 Ti
25-45 fps at MAX settings, 50-60 fps at low settings. and to be honest, lowering the settings doesn't seem to degrade quality by much.
my greatest concern with this game, on the technical side, is negative mouse acceleration. it doesn't make the game unplayable (Dark Souls trained me, after all), but it does detract from the experience.
another problem is the lack of graphics options within the game. I had to look up tweak guides on the web and manually edit configuration files.
however, I have to point out the absolutely phenomenal anti-aliasing. I don't think I've seen a better implementation of it for the past 5 years worth of games.
It was made by Ninja Theory? They also made the DMC Reboot that I am currently playing through...wish they would make another one if only the DMC fanboys didn't bitch and moan because "OMG, THEY CHANGED THE MAIN CHARACTER TOO MUCH"
The Major League Ginger I know right ? I LOVED DmC . Combat was so good
that wasn't the only problem with it.
If you think it's shit that's fine everyone have different opinions but Don't tell me to kill myself because I liked a game that you didn't like
I gave the dmc reboot a chance after a while, but the gameplay is a big downgrade compares to 3 and especially 4. Stopped after 4 missions
Thank you for speaking up. Multiple reviewers got a core mechanic of the game wrong, proving everyone claiming the same wrong thing either
- hasn't played through the game before reviewing it,
- has not paid any attention to the story,
- has copied his claims from other reviews,
- or a combination of the above 3.
EdFilth i like that she doesn t look pretty, she looks different
Wow everyone is so defensive about this game. Don't get me wrong I did like this game, just really boring at times especially the puzzles. I bought the game so I'm supporting Ninja Theory. If the game wasn't as niche it would've had more appeal. Wait really that's who its based on? What happen did they hire the guys from Andromeda? Jokes aside, besides the faces the game has some an amazing art style considering how small the team working on this was. But hey that's just my opinion.
EdFilth i haven t played It, i only though it was nice
EdFilth Go play call of duty if you wan't gameplay.
Respect the content of this video. Thanks for the work in the community, to make it better.
(not really sure i know why i'd preorder something that you can't out of?) i had 3 reasons why. the screen capture i saw of the girls face intrigued me. the brief description i saw about the story captured my attention. it was done by the same people that made Heavenly Sword. the last reason was probably enough for me anyway. i just started the game and it already has me hooked. great review. thanks.
Thank you for being an ethical reviewer! Even though I know that it's not my style just by looking at gameplays, still, you've earned a sub.
Iol
Love your channel it is professional but fun you are really underated wish you could get more exposure man
This is a fantastic point, and one that needs highlighted.
Also just wanted to say this is the first time I've actually come across your videos on UA-cam and I really enjoyed it.. New subscriber!
Hopfully we eventually get a physical release!
I was lacking good info about the game, thanks for providing it to me. I love your professionalism. Well done mate, cheers!
Well said . Originally i started going toUA-cam to get true reviews on games as I couldn't trust magazines anymore . Now UA-cam reviews are being rushed and aren't spot on now makes it even harder to see what a game is truly like
