    Del Arco performs this role so well. His voice slowly gets more and more emotive as the episode progresses, his motions become less stilted.
    Just a masterpiece in acting.

    this is sad and all but like, hugh has no idea that geordi wears his visor because he's blind
    so it's like he immediately assumes geordi is interested in the eyepiece because he likes it and he's like "HEY.. WHEN YOU'RE ASSIMILATED YOU CAN HAVE ONE TOO"

    This is what makes the borg so neat, and good examples of the stranger alien lifeforms out there: They actually change depending on context. Individually, they are weak, isolated and vulnerable. They can be negotiated, reasoned with and even convinced. But in a collective, you aren't arguing with one guy, you're arguing with thousands of people. They're a sadistic little twist on the whole "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few", by showing what a society that marginalizes and victimizes minorities to protect the "society as a whole" would be like.

      Well aside from your obvious problem with minorities that isn't how the borg operate they don't "marginalize and victimize minorities to ""protect society as a whole"" such concepts are wholly irrelevant to them they assimilate everything they don't even have minorities or society they are a collective, many parts making up a whole, like one big organism

    0:08 I read the screenplay for this the other day, and it said even Geordi was having a hard time trying to figure out the correct answers to those shape puzzles, so it's funny to see him looking that way here, even though I've never noticed that in the past!!!! :P

    I think they should've been honest, and told him they were afraid of the borg, and told him how immoral it was for them to terrorise races as they hunted them, overcame their defenses, one by one, and then assimilated them against their will.

    • @1978rharris
      @1978rharris 5 років тому +16

      STEJTHEGREATEST At that time though the Borg were more of a force of nature than anything else. Ascribing morality to a tornado as it destroys your house, for example, is truly futile (pun intended).
      They were just doing what they do. It was only when the Queen was introduced that an element of immorality could tentatively be ascribed to the collective because then a will was involved, whereas the collective without a Queen was just an instinctive drive toward expansion and homogeneity.

      He would not understand. Borg have no concept of will. It's like you take a single ant and tell her she's free now and can do what she wants. But all she will do is find a way back to her collective or die on the way.

    • @dreamyrhodes
      @dreamyrhodes 4 роки тому +11

      @@1978rharris That's what I disliked the most about the "Queen" (misinterpreting an ant queen as if an ant queen has a mind). For cinematic reasons they introduced a mastermind that controls all the Borg and has a plan, a will. It was done for the whole reason of giving the audience a personified antagonist, some face of the evil, someone Janeway could have a dialog with.
      Borg where much more frightening and cold when there was no mastermind.

      I mean it's pretty accurate honestly he's disconnected from the hive mind all the other voices the queen everybody he's alone he has to think for himself he doesn't have the collective experience and guidance that he's used to he's out of his comfort zone he's been told assimilation but he has no way to assimilate he's alone cutoff doesn't have the reassurances from the collective doesn't have the companionship I guess of the hivemind. He's having to do most of the processing and thinking by himself with his enhancements without any assistance from the Borg's Collective knowledge and hive mind so it's actually quite reasonable that although he wants to assimilate them he was showing minor humanized characteristics at least to me. I mean I remember there's one scene where the queen disconnects one of the drones from the hivemind to get more information out of him then he's either willing or knowing and at first she said deactivate him because he either didn't know the information or didn't understand it so he was begging to be let back in the hive mind but he couldn't give the queen what she wanted so she was going to opt for deactivation at first and then she changed her mind to dismantlement imagine how horrifying that must be for that singular Borg you are cut off from the hivemind you are basically forced to be your own person in the first time and god-knows-how-long you can't give your queen basically the center of your hive-mind the information she wants so she has you dismantled all your fears your cries and nothing to comfort your loneliness as a strip you for parts.
