We have nearly the same thing where i grew up in the Philippines. The only difference is the filling, it's with shredded coconut cooked in palm sugar. And it's cooked using the smallest coconut shell as the mould and steamed. I soooo love and miss this🥰🥰🥰
Sa pilipinas recipe yan ginaya lang nila mas maraming upload ang mga taga pinas na dessert at mas nauna tayong nag uupload kaya ginagaya nila iniiba lang nila name
Yes. Though over in south-east asia, the putu is more as a sweet dessert with jaggery or gula melaka and fresh lightly salted shredded coconut perfumed with pandanus leaves. Some versions are made with glutinous rice flour while others are made with simple rice flour. I have eaten your savoury version of puttu and irachiputti. All those putus , sweet and savoury are all delicious indeed
Thank you for this recipe. I've been wanting to make the Indian puttu, but it's hard to get the steamer here and your recipe is a godsend as it is easier. Your recipes are great!
You're most welcome. As for the steamer, you can just use any saucepan or pot. Place a small rack or a small bowl, then put a plate on top. Cover the lid with a piece of cloth, to prevent the water from dripping into the Putu Piring. Thanks :-)
This recipe is called as in the same name in Tamizhnadu as "Puttu" whatever we used to make with rice which is grinded as dry flour and cooked it will have this name puttu. For e.g. if it is cooked in string form it will be called as nool puttu which means string puttu...
We call it 'Bhapa Pitha' in Bangladesh. It's just slightly different here. We don't use banana leaf and instead of palm sugar, we use jaggery made from date juice.
Good tutorial video, i'd try your recipe and i'm using the same mould as yours, failed 2 times, my putu cake is still uncooked. What kind of rice flour that most suitable for making putu cake? Do you steam the cake with lower heat after the water boils? I'm from Indonesia. Thanks
Well, I'm sorry it didn't turned out well for you. Thanks for the feedback. If it's uncooked,, try steam it longer period of time? Perhaps the rice flour mixture was too dry? I use rice flour from Indian grocers, no brand. I steamed the kue on high heat.
We have this as a breakfast food in southern indian state kerala.it is also called puttu. We do not add palm sugar..just coconut and rice powder..we pair it with souvory curries like chick pea or chicken curry..or we pair it with banana; smaller varieties..we are members of same human family; even if we speak different languages, reside in countries 1000s of miles apart and have different religions.
RASHMI K P putu is tamil food They spread it all over southeast asia And coconut milk and jaggary and kolukat and pulavar rice and idiappam also tamil food
sy nak cuba kue nya sama tak mcm di gerai, during old times this texture of the flour was very big secret to them,tq so much for your sincerity. Can we use the muffin mould?
You can use muffin pan..try not to compact it too much. The texture is not 100 percent like at gerai, but good enough for homemade. Thanks for the comment.
Good morning. Looks yummy. Will be making this for breakfast. Thank you for this recipe. Am happy learnt this dish...Good evening. Tried this out for breakfast. Disappointed I was, didn't turn out as expected. Despite steaming for 10 minutes, putu was still uncooked. Anyhow, thank you once again.
I have always wanted to make Putu Piring but do not have the special mould for this. Will try this out soon. Thanks for sharing! Btw do I have to oil the mould to prevent sticking?
hai, saya dari malaysia, semalam saya buat putu piring ni,selepas siap kukus perlu simpan dalam bekas yang tertutup ke?sebab saya biarkan dalam salji putu jadi berderai-derai...bantu sy
Made this, but realised there is a problem where 1 1/4 cup of pandan water ratio to 2 cup of flour resulted very wet flour, became too watery and couldn't sieve at all. Wonder is there any typo error in the ingredients, should it be only 1/4 cup instead? At the end I added more flour to rescue.
You have to adjust the water accordingly (1 1/4 cups is fine)..it depends how dry (after frying) is the rice flour, and do not add the water in one go. Slowly add and rub the rice flour. Hope this help.
Sorry to hear that! You should not follow the recipe to a "T'. You have to adjust the texture accordingly, diff brand ingredients, steamer, temp of water etc. If uncooked, steam longer. Hope these help.

Thanks for sharing. Wat brand is ur steamer?
What are pandan leaves? I m pakistani. I want to make it. But dont know what leaves are in the vdo
I believed its called "kewra" or "kewda" leaves in India and Pakistan. U can use diluted kewra water but the fresh pandanus leaves are the best
I have always wanted to make Putu Piring but do not have the special mould for this. Will try this out soon. Thanks for sharing! Btw do I have to oil the mould to prevent sticking?
No need to oil the mould/saucer. Thanks.
Wondering where did buy the the clipper to lift hot bowl from the steamer ? What do you call for that tool ? Thanks 🙏
I bought it from Asian supermarket, try kitchen aisle. I think it's called dish lifter/grabber. Thanks.
Kuih kegemaran kalau balik Perak....sedap ooooo...😘

Is there a way to check the doneness of these putu pirings? To check if it is cook thoroughly.

Can we use any alternative for pandan leaf because it not available in our place
i Used two small pices of lemmon grass and 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract, not exactly the same but close : )
is there any difference between glutinous rice flour and rice flour?
Of course. Glutinous (pulot) sticky.
请问什么米粉?粘米粉?
The spoonfuls of water that you added into the flour, is it warm water?
Room temp pandan flavoured water.
Flavours Of Asia thank you!
Why does the kueh overcooked when I steamed for 7 mins on med high heat? Tried for 5 mins but still overcooked?

You can use regular salt, as long not table salt (saltier). Thanks.

You're welcome :-)
Ini tepung ketan atau tepung beras???
Tepung beras.
Wow sarap
Could you plz tell me that which variety of rice rice flour willbe best for this recipe??
I used rice flour from Thailand.
Miss I live in Malaysia, there we can found so many kinds of rice flour. that's why I am asking? some rice flour are so sticky.
Rice flour from Thailand is not sticky. Buy regular rice flour brand like Erawan, "NOT" glutinous rice flour. Thanks.

In Solo, Central Java, use bamboo to cook it.
Wondering how you possible can sieve 2nd time after mixed with water ? They're crumbles. Thanks 🙏
Yes, you can still sieve it or you can skip it. It will produce very fine rice cakes texture. Thanks.
It's also common in China, but without the palm sugar & coconut.
That's interesting. Thanks for sharing :-)
Whats the chinese name for it?
thank you ~! this video is really satisfy💕
Thanks for your kind comment :-)
Is it OK to use plastic bowl ??
It's not advisable to put plastic in the steamer...
palm sugar here is expensive, can i just use the regular sugar instead
I guess so..maybe try brown sugar.
Best results would be muscovado brown sugar as a substitute
Nice
Thanks.
Puttu is India traditional food
Followed recipe to a T but my putu pirings were uncooked too.
Sorry to hear that! You should not follow the recipe to a "T'. You have to adjust the texture accordingly, diff brand ingredients, steamer, temp of water etc. If uncooked, steam longer. Hope these help.

Try lower the heat (different cooker have diff BTUs). Make sure the kueh is not touching the boiling water. Thanks.
