“If only we could unite our people under one flag, all of our problems would go away.”
“If only we could return our historical lands, our great nation would flourish and prosper.”
“If only those filthy Serbs stopped sabotaging our holy Croatian land, our life would be better.”
“If only those filthy Albanians stopped plaguing our holy Serbian land in Kosovo, if all our neighbours just admitted they were Serbs, we would finally be liberated.”
“If only those brainwashed Macedonians accepted they’re Bulgarians, all of our problems would go away.
What you just read is some of the most commonplace rhetorical ammunition of a great deal of the conservative populace in the Balkan peninsula - yet another Balkan obsession among many others that we have already tackled in this series.

This is so similar to what's happening in my country, Ethiopia. We have always been independent, had one of the first institutions, great geographic advantages, immense fertile land and natural resources, yet we're a destitute nation with a major civil war taking place every generation. Even I'm one of the people you're talking about, but I can't help but be when there's an ethnic war and you can only choose two sides with no other alternatives. Either your ethnicity or the ethnicity you're at war with.
I'm from the Amhara tribe, and my people are fighting our neighbours, Tigray. The conflict has displaced millions and killed tens of thousands. The root cause of this is a land dispute and political disagreement with ethnicity as its base.

From the beginning I had good opinion about you.You were explaining the Western imperialism in the Balkans, the real way the destruction of Yugoslavia happened and spoke only truth. And alltough you vere serb nationalist and I was bulgarian nationalist and our views on certain topics could of made furious debate,I respected you more.Because even if some nationalist lays claim on big chunk of my territory,or bashes my country and glorifies his,I will still respect him more than the one who bashes both my nation and his.Nowadays you've became no different from the other mainstream western channels which always depicts the balkans as the bad guys.I was sick that instead of someone looking into the claims of every balkan nation and giving his opinion on which is right and which is wrong, they just state every claim is wrong and useless. And whereas in the first option we can actually have conversation and solve the problem,in the second,in which every claim is wrong,no one gets satisfied and its literally the most dissapointing for all parties.Let me give you an example.Since you know history, maybe you know how the people of North Macedonia are actually bulgarians, but nowadays instead of my nation being united and strong, its devided and macedonians hate us.They are taught in schools that they have nothing to do with us and we are tatars, they are lied that Alexander the great is from their people and change history as they like. And all of that happens while the west is growing and becoming stronger. Tell me is it right to devide a nation in 2 forcefully and create in one of the states artificial language and taught them in schools to basically hate themseles(Bulgarians) and steal greek history? And is it wrong if I want all of this Communist propaganda to get some light and the truth get known and my nation reunited again?Rather than having conversations about it and in the end getting truth to triuph and get together and possibly reunite,we are just told that we are all scums and our dreams of greater nation are useless.Thats why the balkans will be always dissunited and against each other, avoiding to talk about their different views of greater selfs and who is right for what, rather if someone makes a video of this it will be some neutral pacifistic shit, that will satisfy no one.Spain doesnt give Catalonia independence, even if they are different people and just 10% of the land,Britain doesnt give independence to Scotland even if they are different people. But here in the Balkans for some reason there are 3 Serbian states,2 Croatian states,2 Albanian states,2 Greek states,2 Bulgarian states and 2 Romanian states. And we are asking ourselves then why we are dissunited??!!And you did the same thing when you talked about the ancient counterparts of the modern balkan states, again dissatisfying all sides by claiming that no modern balkan nation has ancient ancestor, which is bullshit- ex Yugoslavia and Albania are descendants of the Illyrians,Bulgarians are descendants of Thracians,Romanians of Dacians and Greeks of the Hellenes.Even if you look to ancient balkan map and one in the cold war,the borders seem the same, even with 2000years difference.
Im telling you this, you can be really ,,based'''in my eyes and many others if you spoke the truth, even if it hurt someone.Talking real shit about the different Balkan nations claims, which no one for now does, rather than just say we are obsessed or some shit, talking real about the US imperialism and the fall of Yugoslavia and talking real about why socialism is the only hope for ending slavery.

I think you mistake what Balkan Odyssey means, he's not saying you can't have great people or a greater country like Yugoslavia, nor did he say there's no such thing as a good Balkan person, he is saying the concept of an individual Balkan state being ethnically and nationally "greater" than its neighbors is the problem. Why did they do this? Probably to put down the Russian Revolution. This was not a good war, we were used by the imperialists. Ehhh it's not only that. Greece could have won against the Ottoman Empire if it just followed Venizelos' strategy. But a monkey bite and stupid electoral system later and the pro German king returned, even though Germany had been defeated. From that point on, not only did the great powers support Turkey, but the Greek high command decided to strike in the middle of the Anatolian desert for no reason.
Greater Greece should have been a thing, just like Greater Romania. Greeks were the majority in all areas claimed by the Megali Idea (except for Constantinople by itself, but if you counted it as part of its wider region of Eastern Thrace (European Turkey) it still was majority Greek) and they had to be ETHNICALLY CLEANSED and exterminated in the millions for Turkey to come into power.

Upon Venizelos' defeat in the elections and the restoration of the Germanophile Greek royalists, including the despised King Constantine I, Britain and France froze all of their accounts to the small country, leaving Greece economically isolated. If anything it will only give our politicians more lands to mismanage. The marches which you are showing are a hand full of people with a skewed view of reality sadly. My humble opinion is that in order to achieve any form of unity on our dear heavenly Balkans, each country must first fix the core of its own problems that is currently taking hold.( In the Bulgarian case - general apathy of the population and the painfully tribalistic mindset of the average person.) Hopefully I've been noticing a positive change in the last few years since a lot of young people are getting educated on the topics of politics and oligarchy and the rise of independent medias. Please look at demographics of Yugoslavia and look at how many people considered themselves to be Yugoslavs. It was an experiment which could have turned out great but turned out very bad. Yugoslavia failed twice, both times in bloodshed.
But even if let's say we force the narrative that they are "the same" or brothers. Then Are Croats Serbs or are Serbs Croats? Because Yugoslavs are only a modern construct which as I said failed. The fact is that Slavs came to the Balkans and mixed with Illyrians and other people. So how do these brothers find common ground regarding their history?

You seem to not understand the Macedonian issue. As a Bulgarian i have no problem with them calling themselves Macedonians. The problem is that this country's is claiming Bulgarian history. Such as the VMRO, hundreds of historical fugues, tsars, saints and scrollers who identified themselves as Bulgarian. I have no problem with the new Macedonia nation and their a free to forge their own history. But claiming historical Bulgarian figure such as the VMRO organization who shot ur king Alexander in Marsilia reveals a deep hypocrisy in those people. Macedonia needs to decide are they going to be a new country or will they continue to prais Bulgarian history figures and culture who we have praised since before their country was created.

Sara Ristić-Todorović well I personally don't believe that the Greeks themselves have anything to do with ancient Greeks. Also Alexander was never Greek. He wasn't even a true Macedonian, since his mother was a barbarian which goes against Macedonian customs. Alexander was also never met to inherit Philips throne for that same reason. Many speculate that it was he and his mother the ones who ordered the assasinstion of Philip. But yeah... both the slavs on the Vardar river who are basically Bulgarians nor the greeks have any claim over Alexander. At least in my opinion.

Personally I can't go over that, because they still keep lowering the numbers or straight up denying the fact that it happened, and they did not prosecute people responsible for war crimes in 90's, while Serbia did.

This is due to ignorance of the history. For instance, if we just look notorious Serbs and Croats. Serbs love Russians, they helped them liberated of Ottomans. They they thought they would liberate other, confused Serbs (19th century Srbi svi i svuda, Karadzic), from Austro-Hungarian Empire. Croats(and Hungarians) got liberated from Ottomans due to allience with Habsburgs, Poles, and well, Venice and Spain helped (well, if not for Venice, Ottoman client state Ragusa gaving Neum gave all passage that today would be Bosnia). So ofc they had that sentiment for Hungarians, Poles (that they loved still today) and to some extent, Germans. Anyhow. Serbian liberation was consider imprisoning in King's dictatorship, not liberation. Even Montenegrins thought that. And Serbs inmediatley recognized Montenegro, well, after Russia did that and told them. So, if one have complex inclination, sphere thing, West vs. East and Balkans will always be periphery not the core, those influences will be well, devided. And you will get, this, and it wasn't even that anyone wanted Yugoslavia to brooke, USA was tired of European sh**t by then, and Europe as always didn't know what to do. That is just communist propaganda. Any funny how he doesn't know about ethnic cleansing in italians in Dalmatia and Istria, Germans and Hungarians in Voivodina, like Yugoslavia was made (up) in the war. Who fought for Yugoslavia? My family did that for liberation, first from fasist Italu, then from Usatshe/Nazi. Speaking the similar language doesn't make people the same. Or Chile should be in the same state like Spain? So it is complex.

One can actively oppose multiculturalism in the Balkans WITHOUT upholding any of the historical justifications of the various irredentist movements found throughout the Balkans. In particular, one can acknowledge that diversity of ethnicity, religion, culture, and language in general are sources of tension, division, and conflict.
Therefore, one can support an equitable ethnic partition of the Balkans not in the grounds of some grandiose moral or metaphysical argument, not on presuppositions of “superiority,” but on the grounds that (on average) every distinct people will be better off if they have their own corner of the world.

    • @code8825
      @code8825 2 роки тому +6

You won’t ever be able to make completely ethnically homogenous nations without genocide or displacement, and either of those two options would create further tensions. To try and achieve a more ethnically pure state but failing would result in more ethnic tensions, as perhaps you give away some of the territories with the most ethnic minorities, and take territories with more of “your own people”, but you would still have ethnic minorities in your nation, and more tension would be caused from that due to the fact you now base your nation’s identity on ethnicity. Even if you succeed and achieve an ethnically pure state, as I said this could only be achieved through violent means, which would create tensions with your countries, as they would want revenge for land they may perceive as theirs and their people which you have harmed. This would also cause your country to stagnate due to lack of immigration and healthy relationships with your neighbours.
Personally, with all this, I understand there are difficulties, especially in countries outside of my own, but I see the solution is to embrace multiculturalism and attempt to eradicate those ethnic tensions- I’m not saying doing so is an easy thing, of course not, but the idea that multicultural states are inherently doomed to fail is ridiculous, the issue is being able to take that cultural diversity into the system and deal with it in a non-antagonistic way, and dealing with the contradictions responsibly

That reminds me of the situation in Bosnia. People living there forget that they have a common history, culture, language/accent, etc. A lot of Serbs in Bosnia have been brainwashed into thinking that Serbia is the epitome for a Serb, they forget that the history of Serbs in Bosnia is different to the history of Serbs in Serbia, Heck, the history of Serbs in Vojvodina and Serbs in Kosovo is different, and they're just provinces of Serbia. Same goes for Croats who assimilate into Croatia, forgetting their Bosnian roots. It's sad that people forget where they come from, and feed into the paranoia that they're not welcome there anymore. They'd rather see Bosnia divided into an unrecognisable form than attempt to co-exist. I don't have anything against Muslims/Bosniaks, but them being the only ones who defend Bosnia as a whole, along with Serbs and Croats willingly abandoning/tearing it up, means that Serb and Croat history in significant parts of Bosnia is slowly being erased. For example, my family is from Zenica, which is currently a part of the federation entity. If Republika Srpska seceded, it would mean that my family and other Serbs who are originally from there, would no longer have ties to Zenica. That's just sad. I mean, we kind of already don't, but the official separation of the 2 would be the final nail in the coffin. Serbs and Croats leaving, would also make Bosnia look like a majority Islamic state. Again, nothing against Muslims, but Bosnia has historically been multicultural, specifically in terms of religion.

In a multi-ethnic state, one will always come to dominate the other, and it will create resentment. I live in Belgium so I can speak of the subject. It is not impossible, however it can only work when each entity has maximum regional and cultural autonomy, in a federation or better confederation. The Swiss are the best example to follow. Personally I wouldn't even mind a confederated Benelux, but if and only if we have this maximum cultural/regional autonomy and share on a national level economy/infrastructure/army each as equal members of the federation. The Swiss system is the only way it can work. Now of course, the more members of the federation the more complex it will be. An entity like Belgium with 2 main members and a German minority, is more than enough already.

Regarding the ruling bourgeois, I want you to tell me your opinion from the marxist view about this situation, my father has built a villa for tourism. He is in debt (don't worry, we will be getting out of it soon) and our family alone is too busy to take care of (clean) the villa sometimes, therefore he asks for anyone willing to help clean the house/villa and to be paid around 15€ hourly (it's a descent amount of money) from our village. My father also works, has a firefighting job but still he came to a position to temporarily ''hire'' someone to do a paid work which as I understood in marxist view is the dictatorship of bourgeois, so, is this situation I just mentioned anything related to some kind of ''dictatorship''?!

    • @georgeduke2752
      @georgeduke2752 2 роки тому +5

Dictatorship of the bourgeoisie applies to the class structure of a society, it doesn't really apply to anyone on an specific or on an individual level. In your example your father would be regarded as "petite-bourgeois", as he would be paying the worker a wage which is less than the full value of which he has created and your "father" would then be keeping the profit (i.e extracting the surpluss value). In terms of his tourist villa as he owns it as a buisness so it would be regarded as private property, where as his house that he lives in would be regarded as personal property. His job as a fire-fighter would just simply make him part of the general proleteriat as he is being employed by the state. urplus value created by the person he employs to create profit in which he pays the worker a wage which is less than the profit he created which he then keeps.
Don't get hung up on the word "Dictatorship", the modern interpretation of the word is completely different from what they used it to mean when the text were wrote

I will stay on one point you made friend. You said "multiculturalism will not erase your culture". I live in Athens, Greece. I have walked many parts of the City and although many of its parts are now multicultural, no specific culture can be distinguished. Multiculturalism dors destroy cultures,in the sense that it sacrifices all of them for a bland one that is so not distinct that it can be adopted by all People. If you can go to any big City and find ethnic groups keeping alive their cultures I will admit you are right. But this is the truth. No Greeks in Germany are playing bouzouki anymore nor are distincted in between other Germans,to bring one example. They all have been assimilated. They lost their culture slowly,to the dominant bland culture that the west has nowadays. Anyone who disputes these observations is either in denial or has not paid attention to multiculturalisms effects on the cultures that merge because of it. It kills them. Of course there is a smaller number of People that keeps their culture alive in the far away countries that they have moved but it is more in a, lets say, museum like fashion. Keeping it alive so we can look at it, more than because its part of our way of Life

The Italians have one of strongest ties to there culture and have also a new connection with the U.S and other people. Never have they lost their Italians culture. Same with the Russians. In Texas we have full German speaking small towns and the next town over will speak full spanish. Not to mention the native American population that still tries to keep their culture after European white people tried to eliminated them with disease. They want to see their in-group expanding and growing in relative power and influence, either through becoming greater in absolute terms or other groups becoming weaker in absolute terms, which is the same result really and desireable either way. That will never change, and people will always fight and die over this.
People's in group is not usually class, but nationality, ethnicity, religion, that type of thing.
In theory the in-group could be all humanity, but that is not likely unless aliens invade or something like that, at which point it will only be temporary, as once that menace leaves people will just narrow their ingroup again to the new level of competition.

However, I disagree with the hard left turn in the second half of the video. Solely focusing on elite exploitation misses the broader issue of human morality. There are plenty of parasites - exploiters, liars, cheaters - in all classes.
For example, my country - Bulgaria - was a communist dictatorship for 45 years. First of all, the elites were just as corrupt as now (if not even more so). Second, a LOT of workers put in the bare minimum at work and tried to game the system to get more for less at the expense of others, thus exploiting society for their own petty lower class gain.

It's hardly just the Balkans. Most of the world has ethnonationalism. It's primarily the Americas that don't push it as much because of heavily mixed demographics but there has to be some context why that is. The Americas was mostly stolen from the natives by armed colonial imperialists only a few hundred years ago.
It sure is easy to get all righteous about the ills of ethnonationalism" when living in someone else's homeland. The funny thing is half of the people in the Americas still support ethnonationalism in what they see as their "real" homelands... in other parts of the world. Virtually all American Hungarians, American Jews, American Russians, American Poles, American Chinese, American Ukrainians, American Irish, et al. oppose ethnonationalism in America as minorities... but then many flip-flop when it comes to their "real" homelands abroad where they support ethnonationalism rather than purely citizenship-based model like in America.
Whether one supports ethnonationalism or not, one better be morally consistent about it or they are full of something warm and smelly.

Quite a marxist communist ideal and analysis. I believe it fits right the Balkan region because their states were unstable (not lasting much long), their nations and cultures are mixed throughout history. It doesn't fit anywhere else where, historically, the State lasted for centuries, the notion of nation and state is somewhat mixed. Marx' analysis is correct for the middle 1800s, but not its conclusion globally, it is unrealistic. Countries are nation-states, you need people, borders and functional government institutions to be named as such. States are essential to bring the nation together and to interact with other different groups. The marxist approach doesn't quite fit in my country, France, because we've been there for dozens of centuries. We're on an ongoing civilisation war against islamists, just like Lebanon was. On the other hand, balkans were often ruled by Turks and other people, leading to its multicultarlism that doesn't exists here.

Currently we are ruled by a "west-driven" government, one of their goals being to establish healthier relations with Macedonia, by removing the veto and allowing them to join the EU, without complying to history related issues (oversimplified explanation). Meanwhile, a different super nationalist political party has gained major popularity, basically advertising themselves as an antidote to the western puppet rulers and fully capitalizing on this "Macedonia acceptance" conflict, knowing the general Bulgarian society has a soft spot for that.
The question is, is the current government really trying to go past the ethnonational scandals, in order to focus on more important topics, or are they merely another puppet government, part of the west's plan to further divide out nations?

Serbs ignored a genocide committed against their people during WW2 and gave up a huge part of their territory (Macedonia, Montenegro, Vojvodina and Kosovo as aoutonomous provinces) coming into Yugoslavia in the name of "brotherhood and unity". What did Croats and Bosniaks give up for the sake of Yugoslavia? Is giving up their Ustasha ideology and joining the partisans after practically losing the war their sacrifice?
The SANU memorandum actually sums up pretty well why Yugoslavia was least beneficial for Serbs. But other ethnicities did not agree with these standpoints, so the memorandum actually worked as a catalyst for the breakup of Yugoslavia. When the nations of a country can not agree on such things, there is no point in upholding a federation under the slogan of "brotherhood and unity".
Serbs actually always have been the nation most wishing for a unity of Yugoslav people, while Croats were not really inclined and Bosniaks did not even exist as a nation. It's a one-sided love affair and Serbs tbh are stupid for not learning a fucking lesson. The above stated pretty much shows how much Serbs wanted Yugoslavia, while Croats probably would have loved to stay with Austria-Hungary if they could have. Yugoslavia has failed twice and both times it ended in ethnic cleansing and many lives on all sides being lost. This searching for an explanation as to why it does not work is pointless and what's worst is that it most of the time goes hand in hand with fantasies of how Yugoslavia could work again. Forget about that Yugonostalgic bullshit. Look at how well BiH is doing, where people are forced to live in the same country. Even Bosniaks only want BiH because of the territory they want to claim, not because they love Serbs and Croats and think they are good neighbors and co-citizens.
I don't want to act like the Croatian perspective does not exist, I understand why they view many elements of Yugoslavia as conquering or Serbian imperialism.
That being said, I actually took the opposite political path that you did Balkan Odyssey. I used to be pro-Yugoslavian, pro-Titoist etc.. But I realized that Yugoslavia always was carried by Serbs and on their expense. As I said, a one-sided love affair. So let's once and for all accept it doesn't work. And I actually wish history had taken different turns and there could be a powerful Yugoslavia and a united Yugoslavian nation. On the examples of Montenegro and Bosniaks one can see how history can be changed an manipulated, making the Kotromanic dynasty ethnically Bosnian and the Petrovic dynasty ethnically Montenegrin. While I have a problem with that, I would not have a problem with a shared Yugoslavian history and identity which all Yugoslavs could be proud of. This is basically no different from what Germans are today. But that's a fantasy and we have to accept the turns history took.

Can this video be any more condescending? The Balkans are a lot more complex than pure hatred for the other. The fact that Great Powers play against each other and use minor nations for proxy wars and influence. How they completely disregard national heritage and start wars for false promises of unity or their own small Balkan version of an empire. This video is one of the most preachy shit I have heard.
Ultra nationalism is dumb, but when one studies history, it's easy to pinpoint which nations were fighting for unification with their people and which were for expansionist imperialism (namely Serbia). Most other nations simply wanted unity and independence, because for centuries they were occupied by foreign backwater nations like Ottomans and Austria-Hungary.
They want their chance of self determination and enlightenment. Then there are the scars of war, because during the Balkan conflicts, most nations were near their golden age.
Then we have videos like this where people ignore history and context and condescendingly slap a fascist label and write off everything.
Not saying the Balkan nations are right, but there is a reason for their behavior. Also the only nation that is irredentist these days is Serbia with their obsession with land that is not populated by their own (Kosovo), but historically that's what Serbia always did, be it Albanians in Kosovo, Bulgarians in Macedonia, Bosnians in Bosna and Croatians. Lumping in the entire Balkan nations as being like Serbia is disingenuous and false.
