I think what I love about Death is just how simple his design is. He's just a wolf in a cloak with some swords. And that simplicity speaks VOLUMES. When he says, "I'm Death. Straight up." You feel it, through his looks, his voice, and character.
@@mu1_regeneratethe symbolism of the sickles is also something else, pretty obvious but sickles are used for harvesting plants and he uses the sickles to harvest well, souls
Probably my favourite bit was when we get that close up on deaths face during the reveal as a crystal shatters. If you pause and take a look you’ll see the outline of a wolf skull in the cracks of the crystal overlapping deaths face.
If you look at the part where they're fighting over the map to the star near the river of relaxation, when Puss becomes afraid for his life after getting hit, Death shows up and the formations around him actually make a skull! It's cool how you can make the environment foreshadow a character too⚡️
I'm not a character designer, but i *immediately* noticed the triangular shapes and pointiness when i first laid my eyes on this character. it's cool to see an actual analysis that includes other aspects like the color palette as well👍 💯
Honestly, I don't think Jack Horner's design gets enough love. The dude legitimately has a intimidating presence with each scene he's in inspite of the juxposition of the chubby baby face.
3:06 Size is also part of character design! Placing Puss right beside Death highlights how much larger and more powerful Death is, ramping up the tension since he could easily attack Puss. Edit: whoops, typed this before I saw the rest of the video. I didn't pick up on the cool colors though, that's awesome!
The first thing i noticed and love the most about Death is just how BRIGHT his eyes are compared to the rest of him, and often the scenery he appears in. They're almost always the brightest and most coloured thing in his shots, the main exception being the final confrontation when nearly everything is washed in red from the flames.
It's cool how, while puss is obviously magical he's still a regular sized cat, but death isnt just a talking wolf, hes massive. He's bigger than most humans. He's not just magical he's supernatural
I also notised that the shape of the sickles were kind of echoed through out the character. Not too strongly, but in a way that the sickles feel like they are a very natural part of the character, while still showing contrast. Like in his tail and feet, a bit on the snout, his hunched back
I've been trying to articulate why I liked the character Death SO MUCH in terms of characterization and design, but I could only explain the characterization aspect. As an aspiring character designer I was really sad that I was at a loss for words, but this video articulates why the design was so well done perfectly! Thank you!!
I remember when you upload a video about Puss 2 animated style looks like Spider-Man into the spider verse. I used to underestimate this movie because of it haha. But after I watched this movie, I must say that this is the best animated movie of the year. The characters, the story, hell, the voice actors! Everything is just PERFECT! They definitely put love in their work. DreamWorks really nailed it 👏
Hey Kesh. I recently discovered your UA-cam channel, and i absoloutely love it! You made me realise how much more i loved drawing and now im started my journey from where i left it. The style i am now going for is a 50/50 between You and Jazza since i love how diffrent your style is! Thanks a lot
great video man! I just started designing characters for a one shot manga i wanna make and your vid was a big help. Another contrast I noticed between puss & death is the shape of their furr. Puss' fur is flat and doesn't stand up, making his overall shape more round and soft. Contrast to the wolf, whose fur has these sharp, pointy, rough, triangular fur. I know these characteristics come with the animal themselves, but good choice on Dreamworks for choosing a White Wolf but with less groomed fur
Me: What do i see? Yea it is the Main character and the villain , Kesh: So if you notice the frame there are pointy triangles and referring to the shape theory we know he is the villain , and puss is more rounded so this must be the puss and according to the colour theory there are warm colours contrasting the light colours as well as the clothes are pointy and stiff must be the villain (confirmed). Jokes apart, when learning artists start to notice these in movies then they are really learnin'.😄
The best characters make you wonder if they were able to impact reality before you made them and Death/ Wolf is great at this. Thanks for your video man! Excellent and on point narration! Best wishes to you from Iceland!!
Toothless from how to train your dragon satisfy all the villain traits yet it's lovable. That's what I love about art you can break the rule if you understand the rule😅
Actually not, that character uses very soft forms and shapes as a base with little edges to show danger (wings). It is true you can break the rules, but I don't think that's the case with toothless though.
Note that colors often have different interpretations in other religions and cultures. For example red in the west represents all the afformentioned traits above while in an eastern country for example Japan, it's linked with divinity / godly and is not always used there for negative aspects, rather positive traits. In plain words for everyone seeing this, if you want to implement things do some early research to see if your choices allign or what you want to change and contrast with your stylistic choices.
Death is the best villain, period And I really love you made this video how shape and character design will tell most of a characters story, after watching this, I just found Death and my oc Koujo are inter-related somehow by the general shape and even character, mine is more of low-key and wearing kinda normal dark clothes with red accents at all while death is quite vocal and wears a simple cloak, now I'm proud of my oc since my oc is based on Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart for 4 years and after watching Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I see more of him now and my creativity soared, I can't thank you enough❤️
First of all i like your videos and soon I am going to become an animator. You can say this is my dream. So i am telling you to make videos like this like how you can make a villain or hero or side character etc along with their personalities. This would encourage many other small artist of India. And once more india will make good quality content
Another thing about death is that he has morals to some extent, the only reason he was going after puss is because he wasn’t valuing his lives, once death sees that puss is valuing his lives now, he leaves, he’s not just crazy bloodthirsty with no stopping, yes he is bloodthirsty and I believe he does enjoy killing but only if there’s a reason to kill that specific person
My friend and I were talking about movies and stuff, when she randomly said "i love death" I was SO confused and i was like "You like Death?? HuH?" And then she was like "Yeah death is pretty cool." Had no idea she was talking abt a movie villain, but now that im here-i would like to back her up and say that YES Death is cool. xD
People say that death is not a villain, but that’s not true because he tried to take Puss In Boots life early, so he did it out of anger, which proves that he’s a villain, a good villain 👍
I'm not sure if its actually a shape language thing, but his general shape is a diamond, with the ability to both segment into triangles as well as be read as a shifted square/quadrilateral. Because it makes him both a solid and unchanging character as well as a very dangerous one.
Videos like this make me want people to analyze things they don't normally check out example Characters in Black Butler give off a feeling seeing the strain in their large eyes as their mouth distorts slays me
The Tumblr artist tomatatoro also apply this kind of shape language when he draws Overwatch characters. Circle / Round - endearing, optimistic, open-minded Square - fortitude, reliability, uniform and traditional Triangle - competent, cunning, dynamic, and aggressive
In berserk they do an interesting thing that the protagonist and antagonist designs are switched in which the protagonist is almost designed more like a villain and the antagonist like a hero. Griffith has more soft features and light colours, guts has dark colours and sharp features.
I actually thought the big bad wolf was going to be the main villain because you know ...cat-dog nature😂😂...but it only took me their conversation in the bar to know he was death🥶 Also you've said sharp sooo many times in this video😂😂😂

I was scared of death because he reminded me of my dog, it may sound rude but it's for a diff reason, I wanted him to win but I knew he was going to lose, I love my dog, I'm sure he's a good boy, but deaths sharp teeth keep reminding me of when my dog bit my leg and it cut deep into my shin, I was bleeding and i had to stay in the hospital, he was on demon time energy that day, and that's why I love death, I'm always fearing he will put puss in legitimate pain, and puss won't be able to trust him much or be scared of him.
I have never watched your videos before and I am only thirty seconds in and I am already so entertained!!! My goodness man! My attention deficient ass is so happy :)
Good video, but one comment: Blue is not the complement of red. Green is. Complements are always directly across the color wheel from each other. Blue can be used as a split complement, where the color on either side of the actual complement is used, but it is different from a straight complement.
You are right! I just revised my color theory. Its Split complementary. But I would still consider it a true opposite of red on a harmonious sense because of its temperature. Anyways, thanks for the correction :)
@@KeshArt I understand your point. As an educator myself, I think it’s important to be clear and correct about the information we provide to students. Calling it a compliment of red could send someone down the wrong path learning-wise. Harmonious, sure; but let’s make sure that’s the term we use.
