  • On this day in 1986, ITN broadcast The Prince and Princess of Wales Across the Pacific, a special 25-minute programme covering the royal visits Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales to Canada and Japan.
    The Canadian leg of the tour began in the city of Victoria on Vancouver Island where, in a televised speech, Charles introduced the city to his wife. It was the Prince of Wales' ninth visit to Canada. The couple then sailed to the city of Vancouver, where a state banquet was held in their honour by Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The next day, the Waleses attended the Expo '86 World Fair hosted in Vancouver. It was at Expo '86 that Diana, still struggling with jetlag and having not eaten, fainted. Andrew Morton's biography of Diana describes a weary Diana telling Charles “Darling, I think I’m about to disappear," before fainting on the prince. At the time, Diana’s health was a closely and constantly scrutinised by the media, while in private the Princess of Wales was struggling with despressive episodes as well as chronic bulimia. Though she was escorted from Expo '86, the princess would only get an hour's rest before attending another state banquet that evening.
    The next day, Charles and Diana left for Japan. Starting in Kyoto, the couple enjoyed a peaceful beginning to their tour with a visit to the ancient Buddhist Temple of Shisendo, where the pair took part in a tea-taking ceremony before Diana tried on a kimono. The Zen Buddhist temple of Tōfuku-ji was the last engagement in Kyoto before the pair travelled on to Tokyo. The Japanese capital welcomed the Prince and Princess of Wales with an enormous street parade, the couple riding standing up in an open-topped car. Later, Prince Charles addressed the National Diet, Japan's parliament. In his speech, he called for greater cultural exchange to improve understanding between the two countries. Charles and Diana were then treated to a display of Kabuki, the classical form of Japanese theatre that mixes dramatic performance and traditional dance. After the Kabuki came Sumo wrestling - one of the biggest spectator sports in Japan. Watching from the box, lipreaders picked up Diana commenting on the size of the competitors. That evening, the Wales attended yet another banquet in their honour, hosted by Japan's Emperor Hirohito in the Imperial Palace.

    They look beautiful together. I love the way she smiles at him on the boat and the way he guides her inside to protect her from the wind. ♥️

    What a wonderful documentary! Thank you so much for sharing! They did such a wonderful job of documenting these incredible Royal tours in the 80s and 90s. Bless the journalists. My goodness being a Royal is a lot of work. I’m exhausted just watching them. A flight from Canada to Japan! After all the nonstop work they did! Good Lord! I’m so impressed. 🙌🏻

      Exactly. It is clear that there was more to it than how Diana portrayed it in her book and the Panorama interview. Context is everything. Quite honestly I think she was angry that he could find a steady relationship while she ran through a lot of different men. And she wanted to leave Royal life and wanted to get the public on her side first. I never believed that Charles was some wicked Prince who duped her into to marriage, and she a lamb to the slaughter. It was another fairytale and people would be more sceptical these days, pretty face or no pretty face.

      @@StStStSI don't believe diana could get away with squarely blaming charles and Camilla inspite of having so many men in her life. Either that is a totally fabricated lie about her or she had more on charles than we know and he is total CUCK.

    Charles Charles he wasnt thinking straight the day he divorced princss Diana. His beautifull wife he dropped just like you say knife. The love smiles they gave each other. She was such a loveable beautifull princess. I wish he saw her like the worlds people did. But its not Charles. Its the person blackail him that keep Charles from working on his own marriage. Charles was leading by the nose. Princess Diana is gone but never she willl be forgotten. She will be loved till the end of time!!!🤴👑🌹🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤❤🤴👑🙏

    It had been First Nation land for over 13,000 years not a thousand. Archeologists discovered remains of a community that was talked about in local tribal lore. They found scientific proof of the existence of an older settlement dating back to the 9th century BCE.

    Just looking at them in the car, how depleted he looks knowing that she's the one people want to see. I bet he couldn't wait to get back home to Camilla and not be outshine by her not a chance of that happening!

    • @StStStS
      @StStStS 2 місяці тому

      Diana was probably moaning in the car, getting out all her negative feelings about Royal life. It must have been hard to put up with that, and then her stepping out radiant and being adored. I’d be depleted too.

    Prince Charles is very handsome. He has inherited the looks of the Georgian kings especially King George III. It's a pity that the Princess wears heels of an inch or so as she's supposed to support the Monarch and not cause visual detraction from him no matter how tall and beautiful she is. The monarch is the centre of attention for everyone if we get it right.
