    They literally taught the players that picking up items would punish them every time. The cursed items didn't even hook into a larger story or anything. They were just there to hurt pc's

      It sounded like he just wanted to torment people. They flat out in character state that magic items aren't worth the trouble as they all seem to have crippling drawbacks and the DM complains they are "metagaming" and "acting out of character" when it would be very much in character knowledge that any magic item they find is probably cursed and not worth bothering with.

    • @notednuance
      @notednuance 3 роки тому +194

      I think its likely the DM thinks having to deal with a cursed item is a neat way to add extra interest or adversity. I don't disagree conceptually... but its a trope that only works when used sparingly. I think you can have an occasional cursed item thrown in like traps if they are easily dealt with... and probably only one big curse item if you want it to create a side arc that they party must solve before moving on with the grand schemes of the campaign. It bears mentioning in light of this DM's tactics that cursed items only work as a "trap" if you do also give out non-cursed magic items. Like imagine a world where you never encountered a chest that wasn't a mimic? The disguise is ruined and no one opens chests.

      It's an old black and white movie.
      The jist of the scene is that after hearing an order to shut the protag's business down, a military guy does so while justifying it with "I am shocked, SHOCKED to find out that there's GAMBLING going on in here!" And right after, someone comes up to him and is like "Your winnings, sir" and the military guy nods, takes it and goes "yes, thank you sir"

    I think that first DM is DEFINITELY a bad DM. They purposely railroaded the players into death, punished them with death or being attacked for picking up items, and then got mad and blamed them when they.... didn't do the thing they were repeatedly punished for doing. They literally made the only way to play the game players willingly filing their characters into a woodchipper for no reason.

      Cursed items that just “oh the person becomes a bloodthirsty monster and ATTACKS their party” are boring. They don’t progress the story, they don’t result in fun and new situations. It’s just “ok, get the weapon out of their hands or KO them.” Things that have no save or a save too high for anyone to succeed on are stupid. You’re giving the players no reason to try and be creative to get out of it. There’s no nuance and no fun, just tedious problem solving, like doing thousands of addition problems by hand. Cursed items are like wasabi, too much makes everybody hate you.

      I was once given a cursed item at level 1, because the new DM couldn't stop himself from what I call "forced progression", since we weren't even railroaded along the way; I had a Cleric with a high ac, like, 18-19 at level 1. Level 1 (not saying that's super impressive for level 1, just pointing out : that's when I got this cursed item)
      Nobody had Identify, unfortunately, and I wanted the ring on the off chance it was a Ring of Protection : I really liked standing right next to our fighter so I could Spare the Dying, And be a second option for the enemy to hit - and often not get hit - or at least, that was the idea I wanted to work towards.
      Turns out, our DM thought being a "good healer" (in my eyes) was me META gaming, and it sapped me of 5 AC...
      I waited for a single fight, so that it'd be an in character decision (if I was lucky enough to get this far), and after taking too many hits and being a liability to my party, in character, I told them (basically) : "I am.. sorry. This, curse is.. too much for me. I do not wish to die, and even more than that, I do not wish to be the reason any of You die. I am leaving - but, I am not without connections : I will ask around, and hopefully, find you a replacement.."
      and then I looked at the DM and said "I'm gonna start working on a new character, now"

    I made that mistake of introducing the players to the Big Bad early. I had even given them special tools and knowledge to neutralize the evil in the boss without killing her. They weren't supposed to get the chance to use these things just yet, the boss being there as a show of strength, but through clever playing, they took her down and purified her, way earlier in the story than needed. All I could do was congratulate them,. I let them have their well earned victory, I didn't try to pull the rug out from under them. While they celebrated, I made a new plan; take a smaller preexisting threat that the players already knew about (a hook for a side quest) and promote them to big bad. I'm lucky I had something I could use as a believable backup, and I've learned to be more prepared for this kind of thing in the future.

  • @Vearru
    @Vearru 3 роки тому +135

    Okay so cursed items are absolutely wonderful it’s just they need a boon as well as the curse. There needs to be some motivation to actually pick up the item, otherwise the curse has no point. Something like a vampiric sword that requires daily meals or draws your blood but if you keep it well fed it’s a very powerful weapon. Or if it is an item that can instantly kill you it should give a boon that would be just as powerful for instance a ring that grants immortality until you are the 13th most recent person to touch the ring. It gives strong motivation to take the ring, for people to try to steal the ring, and then to recover the ring after its stolen. It also gives plenty of time to recover it and I can always simply decide that there haven’t been enough new people touching the ring for a PC to actually die. And actually despite loving cursed items after looking at all of the magic items I have created those are the only two. I have some items that require attunement or they will have an effect akin to being cursed such as the wand that can cast either cure wounds or inflict wounds, but that is simply a net positive once you attune and get to choose.

      My iteration was a magical sword that would ominously require will saves occasionally when used. Started out just a pretty solid item, but every time a will save was lost, it would increase in power before eventually beginning to whisper directly to the player. When the campaign ground to a halt with ppl missing sessions and real life intruding it had reached the point where it absorbed effects from creatures it killed that could be unleashed at will (think... a powered up smite effect that I could jazz up with fluff depending on circumstances, the guys were HIGHLY amused when it absorbed a wind effect from an elemental & they later yeeted a storm giant from the side of a bridge spanning dimensions)
      Was only a few sessions away from it causing the PC in question to go into a party-killing rampage to sate the lust of the sentient weapon he'd been feeding for months. Genuinely think the guys would have *loved* it (especially as the PC in question was the lawful good paladin tasked with ensuring the lawfulness of the party rogue, who was obsessively climbing the ranks of the local mafia)
      I was still laying the groundwork for a solution that wouldn't involve perma-death, but getting the balance right so they could figure it out was always a task. A previous encounter had them fight a lich they had ZERO chance against in a straight-up fight but whose reliquary was encased in its own skull (it was being used as a guardian & them destroying the reliquary merely meant it was free to flee the encounter. An intentional lose/lose situation for the party :P) Took them 3 full rounds of blowing everything they had before they even ATTEMPTED skill checks or even questioning me about the description of the room/monster.

      I think it makes sense if the downsides also play into the players action. We had a player who decided to murder a dude in cold blood and steal his magic ring later find out it was cursed. There was actually nothing stopping him dropping it and it had some great perks, but it was also haunted by the guy that he killed. It would sometimes give away our position if we were trying to be sneaky or ruin our chances at sweet talking an NPC and he had to make the choice about whether it was worth keeping or not.

      3. He defeats them easily, and upon seeing how weak they are, tells them to stay away from that gang or they'll really regret it.

He hates Drow, is overtly racist to the PC, and maybe the other PCs for being "Drow Lovers", but he is the only person with required info in town, along with being a local hero from some long ended war, so the characters are forced to do his stupid tasks, all while being demeaned, until they can get that plot info. Now, we give them a choice, the racist has given them the info, it would be easy to kill him and just leave town, but if they do this town will openly hate them for killing someone they consider a "real hero" and will hire mercenaries to try to kill them. Maybe they try to reveal how he acts to certain people, and then it's revealed that the mentioned long ago war was actually fought against Drow and he still holds resentment against them for killing his comrades, maybe one of those killed was his brother or maybe teenage son, so that's why the way he is.

And of course without the Remove Curse requirement, as the players should be allowed to use or discard the items as they please. What they actually do with the items is part of the fun This is just some of the weirdness my players have encountered:
    -A ring of invisibility that have a random chance of temporary failing with a VERY loud bang.
    -Bracers of armor that creates a storm cloud that constantly zaps you with tiny lightning bolts and rains on your head, making it impossible to hide or sleep properly.
    -A sword with very powerful enchantments that has a chance of phasing through its target without harming them.
    -An intelligent item with verbal diarrhea.
    -A blunt weapon that deals no damage whatsoever except to non-attended objects.
    -A "ring of mole-rats" that turns the wearer almost blind, but gives them tremorsense and improved hearing.
    -An immovable rod that is LITERALLY immovable, as in can't be used again after it is deployed.
    -A "ring of infernal back pains" that increase spell DC of spellcasters, but makes it hard to maintain Concentration checks.
    -And of course a bardic instrument that makes the bard constantly being harassed by rats.
    In a world filled with magic and wonder, why wouldn't there be spellcasters that was dickish pranksters instead of murderous lunatics? When I play a spellcaster I spread annoyance and frustration to the world instead of death and destruction. It's much more fun playing a dick than a murderer.

    To show how the third story could have gone right and still been interesting, I’ll use an example from my first session.
    So, my players were crawling through a freshly made goblin cave. The tabaxi druid had gone ahead to scout since she had the highest dexterity and proficiency in stealth, coming to a corner after seeing a large group of goblins fleeing the party, who were slaughtering the ones that tried to fight them. She saw a large goblin barking orders to a smaller group, however the group was much too small to have been the full size. She makes a perception check, gets an 18, and sees a small crevice a few meters in front of her. Peeking in, she sees the rest of the goblin group waiting in ambush to jump the party from behind while the other goblins acted as bait. She then signaled the ranger to initiate combat, and the sorcerer was able to take out most of them with a high roll of burning hands once they had all funneled into place after the initial shock of their ambush failing. The larger goblin managed to escape (because I don’t play my goblins and kobolds as dumb creatures), but they managed to overcome what would have been a truly tough situation. The only real high health and ac character was the cleric, and the others (artificer, sorcerer, druid, ranger, and bard) would have been easily damaged during the goblin surprise round.
    Reward your players with information, and let yourself be rewarded for how they use that information to beat you at your own game. That made me proud, because before this campaign she really liked to go ahead and do things without thinking too much at first. It was great listening to them formulate how they’d get around the ambush, and how they decided to work with each other.

      Exactly, it's about the trade-off. There needs to be some reason why the PLAYER would want to use the item, not just the character being subject to compulsive mental effect. The times when a player uses a cursed item, knowing (or suspecting) the down-side, but in a desperate enough situation that they think it's worth it? Very dramatic, very awesome, and most importantly, hinged on player choice. Making them use something that does nothing but kill them, so you can laugh at them? Stupid.

  • @Crazor2000
    @Crazor2000 3 роки тому +35

    I feel you could seperate cursed magic items into two groups, "Trap items" and "Trade off magic items"
    The dm of first story had used up until that point only what i call '"trap items". the items are things that aren't really practical, and more used as a form of trap or punishment for the player. these items are interresting in moderation, keeping players on their toes, and telling them that not everything is meant for the PC's in mind, BUT should be used VERY sparingly, and to much and you risk the situation in this story.
    the second magic item is what i would call "Trade of items". these items do increase the power of the party, but have some downside or risk attached to them. These are things like the 'deck of many thing' (extreme example) and the 'gambler's blade' (a blade that gives you a +1-3 to your weapon, but make your death saves worse by 1-3). These are risks, but not totally useless, so they may want to use them. But as a dm you want to make the benefit worth the risk, otherwise that item will go to waste. besides that, you want not want to use them to much.
    And that is the key of good cursed items, and that is moderation. if you give these items too much, the best scenario is that your players don't trust every item or you and be suspicous of every item, worst case they don't use any items, because they are risks.
    you want players to interact with stuff you place infront of them, so making everything a trap is going to rappidly make them paranoid. You want the players to trust you, not reading into everything you place infront of them, because that's not fun for everybody, and one of the most fun things i think you can have as a DM it that players are excited about the stuff you place infront of them.

      There is a middle ground, where the item is useful and does make the PC stronger, but the curse is more detrimental than the item is beneficial. Examples of this include things like Craven Edge from Critical Role, or some of the Symbotic items from Ebberon. These items can spawn incredible story arcs when used correctly, but can sour a game when used incorrectly. If the curse is bad, it can’t affect the player at every moment, only presenting itself when a specific trigger occurs.

    • @Crazor2000
      @Crazor2000 3 роки тому

      @@ArmegeddonCraft i feel that craven edge was closer to a trade off magic item, than a truly deprimental item. The item can be handled, but the players didn't simply know the full extent of the curse, till they got rid of it.
      But the middle ground is usually very difficult to pull off, since players tend to get rid of these items, unless absolutely necessary (like when it is like a important to the plot, like the one ring) or they don't understand the consequences of using the item. And what makes a middle ground item is also pretty subjective and depends on what a player would consider a risk/hindrance. One player could argue that the deck of many things is like a middle ground item, because there it's just as likely that the deck takes something away, but for a high level party, who could handle the consequences of some of the cards, they could consider it a tradeoff.

    First story: An idea taken too far, but not one to be abandoned. Give a narrative reason for the curse and a way to lift it within a session, and BAM. Evil demon sword fighting for good! Pretty metal.
    Second story: Can we appreciate the irony that the Wizard took over as DM?
    Third story: Another way to handle that super villain situation would be to let it happen. Have him bust out of jail later and try for revenge later, or have his capture get the attention of a bigger, badder super villain. Either way, the party gets a victory and sets up events down the road. Cool of him to order pizza, though!

    1:00 So, like... the actual player? I mean, I'm all for immersion but this is too much! Lol! Seriously, though, what did this DM think was going to happen? "Oh, look; it's some loot! Surely it won't be cursed this time!" It's like that person who always tapes a thumb tack to their hand every single time they give someone a high five and then wonders why no one wants to give them a high five.

    Been watching your videos Crit Crab but have never been able to play but of my close friends who was DMing had asked me to help her make Mpc's and custom items to help build her Halloween themed campaign. This lead to the creation of my favorite cursed item I had made. (BTW apologies for any spelling errors I can't spell)
    It must be said that I was 14 and she was 15 and we were both heavily into Five Nights and Freddy's ,so we couldn't resist putting at least one item from the games lore into it. The item itself was an old tattered teddy bear.
    The lore I made for it was it was the only girt/ friend of the BBGS dead daughter who was abandoned and died alone trapped in your typical haunted mansion. When she died her spirit joined with/ possessed the bear. When I say possessed I mean she didn't gain control but the toy became sentient and inherited a more violent version of her personality/ will. So her cries for attention manifested itself in the bears ability.
    The bear was found in the girls room and would latch itself onto the first player that viewed it. (It would move on its own when no player was watching and couldn't be physically hindered or harmed. The only way the party could get rid of it was to either purify it or if its holder died.
    The curse meant that from sundown till sunrise it must have someone constantly watch it or it would transform into a 7 feet tall vicious, tanky unrelenting killing machine of a mini boss that had no physical form. However, it had no ranged attack and could be out-ran by the party.
    A way I tried to prevent a party kill or to try prevent the over abuse of a high level MiniBoss that would attack anything in its sight (I.e enemies) is that it couldn't kill players or MPCs and would leave them on 1 HP, but could leave them with a range of mental debuffs/ physical scars or at worse loss of limbs.
    In exchange for always leaving the party on edge every session, it granted a strong one time ability per user (that party wasn't made aware of ) were if its master would die in combat, its mini boss form would spawn and save its owners life, leaving them on 1 HP if necessary (say if they would be stabbed or would die to fall damage but not poison or age), it would fight to the death who or whatever tried to kill its master. If its master would die or survive, its ownership would then switch to whoever next laid sight on its toy form and could chose the same user again and refresh the protection.

    Recommendation for Cursed Items: have the items have a set number of charges or uses and then once used up they break. Players can add charges by making a sacrifice like hit points, a temporary negative to a skill or ability score, or to an extreme they can't be healed normally.
    The benefits of doing it like this:
    -Players get access to cool magic items earlier.
    -Smart Players will be more conservative with the items abilities.
    -DM can give cool abilities without too much worry over the items breaking the game for the players.
    -If players form an attachment to particular items and what to keep them around you can make it a quest line for them to improve the items and minimize or nullify the cost.

      Another option is to make the item more powerful than your run of the mill shit, but have it be equally as detrimental. I once made a weapon that was possessed by a demon, and the demon made it extremely powerful, but it'd make you occasionally take a will save and, if you failed, your consciousness would be thrown in the back for a few minutes while the demon took over.

    i think a cool idea for a cursed item, would be a sentient cursed gauntlet that over-time could progress into a full suit of armor that would eventually take over the host, but with good will saves you can halt or even regress the curse to the point where you make the gauntlet your own and can have the full suit without fear of being taken over
