Thule Foothill Roof Top Tent Hack!!

  • The Thule Tepui Foothill is a well designed, quality manufactured, compact 2 person roof top tent. While it's nearly perfect for my needs, there are some obvious shortcomings. The most glaring of which is probably the way the storage/travel cover is attached.
    With the zippered cover enclosure along the backside of the tent, a long reach across and over the roof, it's not the easiest thing to unzip. Especially if you use the remaining roof real estate provided by the small footprint tent for other gear and accessories, like most people.
    A simple hack to remedy this frustrating setup is to simply flip the cover around, giving easy reach to the zipper...
    And in this video, I show you how to do just that.

    So simple and brilliant! I’m doing that for sure. Btw they now have quick release mounts for their tents. A little spendy since it replaces the rails on the bottom of the tent but much easier to install. Thanks for video.

      Thanks for the comment, Jared 👍🏻
      I'll have to go check that out! Fiddling with those nylok nuts is a PITA. I'm also interested in the quitted insulated liner

    As always, a great video Eric. This is the type of video I love because it gives a person a chance to really see how a project is done and prepare for it themselves ahead of time. Keep it up my friend!

    Thank you so much for showing this! I keep reading it and not fully understanding until now. I am currently waiting for my foothill in the mail.

    What kind of screws you use on the wheels?

    Question: where do you store the ladder when traveling with your Thule foothill tent ?

    • @TLOverlander

      It stands up behind the passenger seat in the foot well 👍

    How does it do in the rain?

    • @TLOverlander
      @TLOverlander  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the question... My Algonquin trip rained for pretty much 2 days and 2 nights... Warm and dry inside. I love how the fly gives lots of eaves to the shelter. And on the backside, you can button it down for even better storm protection.

      @@TLOverlander looking to get this as well, did the moist get inside the tent those 2 days?

    • @TLOverlander
      @TLOverlander  Рік тому

      @@makariussulit nope... We were well sheltered. No water intrusion. On a previous trip, in cold weather, I did notice a small amount of condensation on the inside, which is pretty normal. I should of had a window cracked open.

      @@TLOverlander do you have to have a higher roof rack to be able to mount it? And if yes do you have a budget friendly you can recommend for a roof rack rails? Thule yokohama etc. thanks so much!

      @@makariussulit the Valkyrie is probably the most budget of the aftermarket Bronco racks. But the company has had a lot of issues... And I've seen them all!
      The factory rack may work for a small RTT, but the crossbars would definitely need upgrading. I think the HD Yakima ones Ford offers in their accessories catalog are priced fair...?
      But then again, the factory rails are mounted with all plastic pieces and I've seen issues with them on other trucks

    I understand why, but when you flip the cover the reinforcement no longer sits over the ladder attachments.

    • @TLOverlander
      @TLOverlander  11 місяців тому

      This is true....
      But does the cover need reinforcement there?
      Time will tell. I'm not too concerned

      @@TLOverlander Fair assumption, but Thule did add some patches there. One suggestion from me to Thule would be to make room for the ladder on top of the tent.
      And thx for the video. Rude of me not to mention that.

      @@user-xp6wt8fz1r not at all. I appreciate feedback and comments always 👍
      Maybe I can devise some kinda protection for the ladder mounts in a future vid. Like you say, the reinforcement is probably there for a reason 👍

    Do you still have this tent, and if so, would you recommend it?

    • @TLOverlander
      @TLOverlander  4 місяці тому +1

      I do still have it, yes....
      It's a bit of work to set up but I'm quick at it now. Definitely would be very cozy for 2 people. I wouldn't recommend it for 2 adults. Light and compact though... Like nothing else!

      Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your fantastic video. I have just purchased this tent, and it does seem a bit difficult to set up and put away, so I'm glad to hear it gets easier.

      @@ptrckmuir with my setup, I have a roof basket on the one side, so the Foothill allows you to "button down" the fly on the inside, which I leave done up.
      Then it's just a matter of putting the tension poles on the one side, which makes things much easier.
      Thanks for reaching out!
