For the record, Ireland are 3rd and Argentina 6th. As Argentina have showed in beating SA, NZ and FR, any of the top 6 teams can beat any of the others. Ireland lucky to edge this one with a team that is not as good as it was.

@patrickmccutcheon9361 what for the record? Ireland are third. I'm saying there is no difference between the top seeded 6 depending on the day. You could also say Argentina were lucky to come as close as they did with the Beirne knock-on

Everybody criticises Ireland for peaking between World Cups. Suddenly when they're not peaking but rebuilding by blooding new players and coaches and struggling with cohesion and discipline, they're suddenly 'not as good as they were'. Ffs!! Make your mind up.

Well done Ireland, great reaction to last week! I think if we are to have a bad month, this is definitely the time. Cant keep the fires burning forever. If we continue to experiment then the 6n will start to look a lot juicier. France will be the team to beat based on their depth.
First half was vintage Ireland, a big relief. Second half was just a show of how good Argentina have become - theyve had a great year.
I think people are understating just how good irelands defence was in this game, especially at the end of the 1st half. It won them the game.
Bench much much better than last week. Sam looked comfortable and you get the feeling weve seen the advent of something. Clarkson was great, poor boy was nervous starting in such a cruncher but the team really helped him enjoy it and fair play to him, he didnt disappoint. We need more prop development asap.
But the lineout....god this lineout. Its just a bad rash since the world cup. Can we please open the conversation that poc - legend that he is - is possibly not the man for the job anymore? Whats the point in kicking to the corner if were just going to give it back to them?
VDF should have gotten motm, bloody brilliant.

As an Irish fan, I thought Ireland played a lot better than last week (better conditions possibly helped) but so well done Argentina, cementing their place as No. 5 in the world with an excellent performance. Ireland not scoring in the second half was a worry, but in context, Argentina's last score was just on 50 minutes, so essentially there was no scores for either team in the last 30 minutes plus overtime in this game.

If anyone thought this was going to be easy for Ireland, well look at who Argentina have beaten before this game. Ireland came out of the traps firing on all cylinders, but second half was a mish mash the only words that are applicable. Argentina in the second halve had a very good game and could have won', (but did not) and have not beaten Ireland at home. So I still think we need to blood new young players. Our discipline yet again and lineout support play needs big improvement. Great game by 2 outstanding teams! Thank you.

    • @TheContrarianMind
      @TheContrarianMind 10 годин тому

I completely agree. Our discipline and lineouts are major issues, regarding discipline, conceding 13 penalties per game is unsustainable if we expect to win. This problem is fixable, but it hasn’t improved since last week-we’ve now given up 26 penalties across just two games. I believe this is what's keeping our opponents in the game, and it needs to be addressed immediately.
As for the lineouts, they've been a consistent problem since 2023. Everyone knows it: the players, the coaches, and the fans. If it were easily fixable, it would have been resolved by now. Unfortunately, it remains this team’s Achilles’ heel.
That said, its best the dip in performance and issues are showing up now rather than in the six nations or world cup. we are still re-building a team, and finding the right balance. if we can just clean up those two issues this team is as good as ever. I might add in handling errors also which need small improvement and to be maintained.

The Pumas are some tough boys, they didn't drop the heads 13 points down after failing to score before half time. They kept plugging away and were putting us under massive pressure at the end. They could easily have won the game.
Ireland are going through a ropey patch, but I don't think we are on the decline just yet. We were decent in the first half, but our ill discipline and Argentinian resolve brought them them back into the match. We need to lower the penalty count, continue blooding new players and get back to some form of consistency. I think we can do all those things, but we shall see as we go through the season.

I just think yellow card element is literally, colouring the game in negativity. The croc roll, for example, is crazy, in my opinion. It wasn't around the neck, wasn't a twisting of the torso, just a roll. The head-on-head yellow against Argentina early on was also ridiculous. I mean, what is this all about? These are moments in a high contact sport. None of these moments were close to being malicious. I don't want the game to be ruined by this...

The attack looks static without Mike Cat's coaching and the maul goes nowhere. Anyone asking Big Pauly about that and the poor line out? Surely he must come under some scrutiny. Good defence by Arg but it is not that difficult if you know what to expect. Ireland never looked like they were gonna try something else in the 2nd half. Argentina was so shallow and quick on defence leaving loads of space behind the centres to chip into, even if only to give them something else to think about when rushing up on defence. You must force the defence to divide their focus in terms of what your options are. Ireland were just running lateral behind the gain line or putting up high kicks, usually too deep. No challenge for a reasonably organized defence. Must admit I was dissapointed despite the win. Argentina should not be buying the beer tonight...

Great game, love that Farrell brought in Clarkson early (55min) and gave Sam Pendergast 20 minutes. Ireland defence is solid but the attack is lacking, Argentina’s failure to exit in the first half on 4 occasions set the platform for Ireland. They were better at exiting in the second half. Like NZ they were happy to soak up Ireland pressure and take kicks at goal. I thought Ireland should have played territory a bit more, discipline and errors were better but I can’t see them working more to reduce them further. Hopefully we will see Casey, Osbourne and Clarkson start next week. JVF looked like his hamstring went in the dying minutes so Timoney will likely start. If Furlong is back I would bring him off the bench. Izuchukwu will likely be introduced off the bench otherwise it would be a lot of changes. I would be tempted to stick with Crowley with Prendergast off the bench again. Gavin Coombs to be called up, Ireland are crying out for the physicality he brings to ball carrying. Cain Prendergast could also be used for that punch. Robbie or Aki off the bench will offer impact.

First half went more or less as you'd expect Ireland to play but that second half, what in the name of god was that? Refusal to take easy 3 points when they presented themselves throughout both halves, kicking away possession stupidly, failing to execute after pushing right up into the Argentine half. Feel sorry for Argentina, unbreakable defence, excellent rucking kept irish hands from making turnovers, caused us to concede penalties, very aggressive pack, no traction with our mauls at all. About as close as you can get between two teams.

I need to know why, when Ireland were given yellow cards, Argentina went for 3 points both times.
I understand the first time, get points on the board etc. But the 2nd time, they're a lock down, you're in their half, how on earth do you not kick to the corner and rolling maul it with them being one forward down??
That makes no sense to me.
You HAVE to go for the jugular at certain times in a game and that 2nd yellow going for 3 points instead of the corner will always be the wrong move, especially with a forward yellow carded.

@@ciaranbrk well IF the scrum half can get to the ball easily enough then I actually agree that it's unnecessary to penalize the opposition player.
The ref SHOULD consider whether the player is making an attempt, whether he's pinned deliberately, etc.

Writing off anyone in year 1 of a World Cup cycle would be daft. At some point O’Mahoney is going to hang ho his boots too. The Argies played with heart and passion instead of strategy. They kicked for goals instead of going for line outs when they had extra man advantage. They had the pack weights in their favour and could have mauled it as they seem to have strong momentum in their mauls. Its as if they are keen just to give their Nos 10 free points to accumulate to his personal tally than think for the teams glory instead of his single glory. Stupefied I was of this strategy. Thus was a game they could have won. In fact, SHOULD HAVE WON. Ireland was there for the taking.
There are massive problems with Ireland. The transition isn't happening well, but everyone is hiding it. However you saw at the end of the match, their own players seemed baffled as to HOW THEY GOT AWAY WITH A WIN. Their television editor cheated us fans of replays... coz I swear, that last call was to me not a scrum for Ireland to end the game. It was their get out of dodge opportunity. The fans were cheated I tell you, thats just not on. In as much as a cancellation of a try based on an infringement earlier on review, same thing should be awaited before final whistles get made to assess the finish, so no mistakes are made, at least within the last couple of phases as per rules. But this isn't being observed at all.
Sure it may delay ending of matches, but .... if the game if for fairness, let fairness be applied and full rules observed.

I don't always understand captains' decisions on the field. I believe Argentina lost the game when they decided to kick for poles with their last penalty, and to not kick for the corner for a line-out on Ireland's 5 yards line. They were 6 points behind then and the three they got from the penalty, did not change their position - they were still trailing by 3. Even if they would have gotten a second penalty later, they would still not have been in the lead. So with 12 or so minutes left, I would have gone for the corner. That would have given them at least a better than 50% chance to get 7 points and lead the test. Even if they had gotten only 5 points, it would still have been better than the three they got. I believe that when you have battled to get deep into the opposition's half and then get a penalty, you ALWAYS go for the corner. It's just a matter of believing in yourself to convert that into 7 points. That is, after all, the goal in rugby: to cross the line for 7 points, not to just take 3 points and then start all over again in your own half. Cheers from Safferland chaps! 🇿🇦
