Thank you. I was just given about 7 pieces of dragon fruit cuttings. I'm not sure what I have. The person just bought the property and then hurricane Ian happened. I just bought a deep purple one. I'm fairly sure the ones that were given to me were white ones even though they also seem like 2 different kinds. You talking about the spikes and shape helped.
I pay about $10-12 for one dragon fruit in Washington DC (supposedly product of the USA), but only once I have gotten one with red meat. White meat dragon fruits have very little flavor in comparison with the red meat ones. And yes, it is ripe and soft.
Reds are definitely better tasting in my book but whites tend to be better croppers and produce more fruit so it's only the whites that are stocked in Australia. Yellows are very nice tasting but smaller so it's the same as reds, there's less economic incentive to produce them🤷♂️
I've always wondered how in the world to tell the difference in picking out a pink one from a white one! I'm not lucky enough to have them growing in my backyard, or anywhere I could pick them fresh. I get them from the market, and have never gotten a pink one. I've always gotten the white ones... now I know what to look for!! Thank you so much!
When looking for pink ones, you have to be careful. It's not a big deal or anything, but Tropical Dragonfruit (South American variety) can have their flesh be pink or to a magenta shade.
No problem. It's just that pink and magenta fleshed dragonfruit have very similar shells, and I thought it would be cool to give you a heads up. I mean, I was pretty surprised the first time I encountered a magenta fleshed dragonfruit instead of the normal white fleshed variety. Glad I could help! :)
Do you guys know how long it'll take for a plant to grow from a seed, to a plant that is old enough to bear fruit? How long would that take? What about a seedling, like a 1 foot long (longer or shorter i guess) cut off from the plant, i hear that those can grow to bear fruit much more quicker
Excellent video, I live in the United States and was wondering the difference and you showed a lot of information. Just had to read through the comments about the taste.
Jessica Floyd Hi Jessica, your most welcome, thank YOU. Yes the red one is a bit sweeter, some people prefer the red & some prefer the white. Personally I prefer the white, but only very slightly over the red. It's nice eaten with a little ginger syrup or honey or both.
Ethan Nino Hi Ethan, thank you, there are people coming up with different types all the time, I'm sure they do a lot of cross pollinating between the species.
Thank you both for this informative video. I had not tried dragon fruit until this year, and I'm in my late fifties. I didn't know what I'd been missing all those years. I read your comment about liking the white better than the red, and I think I agree. I loved both, though. Wonderful flavor!
***** G'day Melissa, I guess it's hard to say, a little bit like water melon, the little seeds are nice & crunchy, some people say they taste like kiwi fruit. I like them chilled, cut up with ginger & honey, with a few lychees tossed in. Also with passion fruit included. Then you can indulge with some nice ice cream & some of that chocolate ice magic.
Hi Elyse, thank you, they taste about the same to me, the red one might have slightly more flavour. Being red, it probably is higher in anti-oxidants. You take care also, bye:):)
+Justin Prather Hi Justin, I think the red one is sweeter & more juicy & also a bit berry tasting. I like both, however I think I like the while slightly more than the red.
Hi xo & thank you Sonya, they have a mild but unique flavor, they're certainly not gritty or sour, they are quite refreshing, & everyone I give a taste to really loves them. except one lady today, she said it wasn't horrible but I don't think she'd rave about them. I wanted to share a whole fruit with her because she always gives us free nuts whenever she comes to buy honey. She took a portion to let her family sample some. The seeds are much smaller than passionfruit seeds, and they are quite crunchy. The texture is similar to kiwifruit, but different flavor. Anyway, take care, bye for now xoxo back to you!!!

Do they both have the same nutrient content or the red one is better?

Great video sir. Are both of your dragon fruits self-pollinated?
hi sir. can you be so kind to tell me what variety is the red one.
Excellent video, I live in the United States and was wondering the difference and you showed a lot of information. Just had to read through the comments about the taste.

I don't like the white but think the red is very tasty
clear, clean, and to the point. thank you very much for a good tight video.
Thanks for the vid , appreciate you taking the time to do it
How does the red one taste compared to the white one
Thank you for the video. I have had a white dragon fruit and found it a little bitter. Is the red dragon fruit more sweet?
Jessica Floyd Hi Jessica, your most welcome, thank YOU. Yes the red one is a bit sweeter, some people prefer the red & some prefer the white. Personally I prefer the white, but only very slightly over the red. It's nice eaten with a little ginger syrup or honey or both.
Can you breed them together?
Ethan Nino Hi Ethan, thank you, there are people coming up with different types all the time, I'm sure they do a lot of cross pollinating between the species.
Do the have different taste?
Yes, I prefer the red one. It's like raspberry without the sourness, very nice. The texture is different of course.

Please explain what it tastes like.

cool thanks for replyin
It's a dull earthy with a bit of sweetness and crunchy
Kiwi. And we use spoon to eat it like a jelly cake :D
Late reply, red ones tend to be sweeter and white ones earthy/bland/hint of sour.
The red one is spectacular! Which one do you prefer Jeff, do they taste about the same? Take care you two :)
Hi Elyse, thank you, they taste about the same to me, the red one might have slightly more flavour. Being red, it probably is higher in anti-oxidants. You take care also, bye:):)
I can never tell the difference when buying them in a shop. The red ones often are elongated too.
I just got my first white one and it was elongated, whereas the pinks were round.... It is a guessing game at the store
Hey Jeff, what's sweeter the red fruit or the white?
+Justin Prather Hi Justin, I think the red one is sweeter & more juicy & also a bit berry tasting. I like both, however I think I like the while slightly more than the red.
thanks for posting this, i just got a cutting and planted it, but was unsure which type i have. it’s got prominent spikes so it’s the white one! 👍🏽
I want one in my garden !
Thanks Jeff for this video. I'm excited to have dragon fruit in my garden!
+Sonia Soma Hi & your welcome Sonia, thank YOU!!!
@@mugsyjeff Hello sir
Very informative video! I've eaten dragon fruit before but i haven't picked my own before! Thanks!
have you tried the yellow variety?
Hi & thank you, no, I haven't yet.
Another great video. Jeff do they taste like kiwi fruit or are they gritty and sour ?????
Thanks Jeff xoxo

How do you grow the olants
Plants
I like that older generation are on UA-cam, btw I haven’t had dragon fruit yet their not in season, what do they taste like?
Kind of like a mix between kiwi and melon or kiwi and pear. The white ones are tangy, the red ones are sweeter. Hope this helps
just got both very excited!
Great video.
Side note:
It's amazing to see people in the older generation thriving on social networking / video share sites :)
I've had the white variety before, but never the red.
Dannerys needs some of these for her pets
The white dragon fruit the Chinese seem to like that one but the Reds seems to be the better seller
Yum
Thanks :)
Jeff heriot you are the best
WOW, many thanks:):) Your pretty good yourself Mark:) cheers
yummy...
