These microphones were designed and perfected by Blue's first engineer Juris Zarins. Zarins released highly perfected versions of the Kiwi, the Blueberry, and the Mouse as initial offerings under his JZ Microphones label. I have and use the JZ Microphones versions and have found them to be well beyond the quality of the Blue versions. Zarins was repeatedly sued and brought to financial ruin by Blue Microphones and finding anything about his JZ versions of these microphones is extremely hard to come by.
Interesting story. I had to look this up. Blue changed hands over the years and is currently owned by Logitech. I do love their older mics and still think the current line of Pro XLR is great, though they are getting more difficult to find.
I've been wanting these microphones in my collection since I found out about Blue microphone. They're just so pricey. I only have the Blue Bird and it's a pretty good mic. I aiming to get the Blueberry or Kiwi next.
They are a pricey step up from the Bluebird. But something such as the Kiwi will cover you for most needs. And you can't go wrong with almost any of them!
Great shootout. We have a Dragonfly, and it sounded amazing on cello. The low end was robust while the mids & highs were still clear. It can work on voices with some eq to brighten it up and tame the lows. I'll have to try it as a drum room mic now cuz I liked the example here
@@ToddUrban wow! Just listened to the upright bass one, love that sound. I can't wait to start recording my bari, just need to figure out what all I need since I'm completely new to all this, thanks for your videos!
@@ToddUrban this is awesome. I already owned the mouse and after watching this video a few times I bought the Kiwi, couldn’t be happier. 100% from your review tip the scale from kiwi and another mic. Thanks a bunch. Can’t wait for your next blue video.
hello. I have a friend who works in the radio and also does podcasts from home, she is very good and very talented, so I want to give her one of these microphones. I've heard her talk about the kiwi. but I would like your professional opinion about what is the best option for her, based on what she does. Thank you in avance for your answer 😃
The Kiwi is great, but on a female vocal, the Blueberry or Dragonfly can also be great. But for talk radio and podcasts, also consider an RE20 and SM7B. (I have videos on those) They are totally different sounds. It depends on whether you want an open condenser sound or that radio proximity effect of a dynamic mic.
Yeah, the bottle rocket is nice with the changeable capsules. I personally prefer not switching capsules and having the variable polar patterns like on the Kiwi. It is just more convenient. But they are all excellent on vocals.
They are great and super versatile. I've seen them used for amazing prices. They are very solid, so you might want to consider trying to grab a pair on the cheap side.
Absolutely. The open top end sounds amazing and even. But this is a pro mic, so you will need an interface, unlike their USB mics that they make for podcasts. (Maybe that is obvious, but just making sure you know that) 😃
@@ToddUrban I liked the crisp top end in both of them. A bottle rocket stage one just showed up close to me for a great price...I may pull the trigger.
@@ToddUrban Of course. It's my local music store, so it'll have a warranty. They're selling it for $645 Canadian. I'm going to have a look tomorrow. I've been using Blue onstage for years. They sound great and are durable as hell. I actually called Blue to give them crap about letting their studio and stage mics go.
Oh no! They don’t offer repairs anymore? I’ve resoldered some Blur capsules. They are fairly standard. Any good mic tech should be able to fix them. Vintage King might be a good place to check.
Never liked any Blue mic I tried. Blueberry fell apart out of the box. Dragonfly was one of the worst microphones the engineer ever heard at a respected studio.
I’m surprised to hear that. They aren’t my favorite mic for all applications. But I do love the Mouse and Kiwi. The Dragonfly is a bit odd, I will agree, and the Blueberry has some hyped upper harmonics. Either way, thanks for watching and commenting. 😃
Hey Todd! I've been looking everywhere to buy the blueberry but it seems like it's discontinued. Do you know anything about this and in case why it is discontinued? Thank you for a great video!
Hi Joonas! That is too bad to hear that. I do not know for 100% sure, but I believe the company might be changing their lineup a bit. It seems like they have a hard line division between the pro mics and the consumer ones. Sorry I don't have any additional info beyond that.
I have a blue blueberry mic going through a blue robbie tube microphone pre and it sounds like butter.
Nice! I never tried their pre! They look cool. 😎
Thanks for the comparisons! It's been really helpful
Great! 😃 Glad to hear that!

Thanks man! The kiwi 🥝 sounds the best across the board
It is my go to for most vocalists! Super detailed with nothing overhyped.
love my kiwi
It is great! 🥝
I bought a blueberry and paired it to a Rnd newton channel and omg it sounds soooo good!
Can’t go wrong with RND!

Nice. Yeah, on drum overheads, it doesn’t capture too much bass, but has a great smooth top end
That kiwi is perfect for vocals but the rocket has this feel on the guitar I really like,
Yep! The Kiwi is my go to on vocals. The rocket is a cool idea. I’m just not a fan of the interchangeable capsules. Thanks for the comment.
My cousin's just shipped me the mouse as a gift, so glad to hear it's better for more bass voice as bari sax is my main instrument
It is amazing for bari. Check out my videos on upright bass recording. You’ll be psyched to hear the response!

great comparison, Thanks!
🙏🏻 😊
Glad I got a Kiwi before Logitech discontinued all of the Blue microphones. I bet the price has gone up even _more_ now.
Yeah, it is a shame to lose a pro line of mics.
This is the best mid/high end blue mic shootout. I want more. Can you also do in depth on the kiwi since it has 9 selectable pattern? Thanks
Great! Funny you asked for that, as I was thinking about doing a review only on polar patterns in general! So you might see it in the next few months

Great to hear. I have tons of top mics, but the Kiwi will always remain in my collection! 😃
That kiwi had a very warm full and lush low end 🔥
Definitely. It captures every detail of whatever you put it in front of. It is one of my favorites!
The blueberry is like warm butter on female vox! 😎👍🏿👍🏿
Yes!!! 🔪 🧈
Nice job!

Was interested in the rocket stage 1 for vocals ?

I really would like to get a pair of Dragonfly's for acoustic guitar.

Yall should have included the ember, it punches way above it's weight.
When this was created, the Ember was still in development. But yes, their lower line of mics are still solid. The Hummingbird is nice too!
@@ToddUrban I didn’t realize it was THAT new lol… guess it feels like I’ve had it longer than I actually have.
Good job on selling me on the blueberry

Hi, what pop filter is that, please?
Hi. It was a Blue Pop Filter. But I don’t think they are available anymore. Too bad since they worked well and looked pretty good too.

The Mouse and the Bottle Rocket sounded best to me for vocals.
The Mouse is the unique one to me 😃

@ferox965 yeah. It’s a shame Logitech ditched the pro line. But I guess that’s what happens. They stick to what is most profitable.
kiwi seems like the better compromise of them all.
Definitely the most versatile if you have the 💰
