I defy anyone to NOT cry during this movie. For those who have never seen it before, Jess, I wish you had shown during the end credits that this is a TRUE STORY, except that it happened in Japan, in the 1930s, and the real dog and his owner was shown, and then the information about the statue that was erected in the spot where the real "Hachi" waited for his master for 9 years after his master passed away. That was useful information for those who were watching this for the first time here. Story was not fiction....just the location and time was changed.
BEAUTIFUL but HEART WRENCHING movie. First time I saw it on TV a couple of years ago, I SOBBED through the rest of the movie, after Richard Gere collapses...I KNEW something was going to happen when Hachi wouldn't go with him to the station and kept trying to make him stay Dogs truly are able to sense or smell that something is not right in the body of their owner. This has been documented many times. Owners who are epileptic have dogs that can tell when a seizure is coming on and warn their owner. There are dogs who have been trained to detect cancer. To say that dogs are marvelous creatures is an understatement. Plus when you love them and treat them right, they are loyal forever, more than any human being could be to another person.
For me, it was gut wrenching watching this broken-hearted dog year after year waiting for his "person" to come home. Even though they are such intelligent creatures, there is NO WAY they can understand WHAT happens when their person dies, especially if their person didn't die in front of them. There is NO WAY we as humans can make them understand and that is what is SO frustrating, I love dogs, and have had 3 in my lifetime. But unfortunately I can't have one now, as much as I would love to. THANKS for reacting to this beautiful movie.

What is really unfortunate is professor's family don't let Hachi come and say goodbye to his master. In real life we don't know what could have happened. If this was actually true then dogs being as emotional as they are suffer more due to the actions and restrictions of humans and our behaviours like this.
It was Hachi's way of showing to the family what injustice they did to him by not allowing him to come close to the professor's body and part of the funeral.
No human suffering can make me cry but seeing animals in pain, deserted by owners and suffering makes me so emotional and cry just like you did. Simply can't stop it every single time.

So this one time a dog on the streets found two humooons . As they try to get in their truck to go home, he kept walking around the truck. This poor dog, not knowing that they were cat people. But he never gave up. So the cat people took him home and made calls to people that might want a dog. The next morning one person answered and said yes. We will take that dog, and give him a life on our farm. But within the hours that make up one night. The cat people fell in love with this lil pup. " OK, it might have been 10min ". Needless to say, the cat people fell in love with the dog that had eyebrows. What else can I say, a legend was born. This LiL pup's name was Max, " My Hachikō "

I own two Akitas. The American Akita not the Japanese Akita Inu you see in the film. Both come from the same ancestral line.
This loyalty is not uncommon. Both of mine are loyal pups but my boy Kinjo is a dog that would do this, like Hachi. When I leave my wife says that he just sits by the window all day waiting for me to get home. When I get home he is so happy to see me... and he's not a happy-go-lucky dog, he's actually very serious and not very playful. He always sleeps at my bed alongside me and is always at my feet wherever I sit.
The Akita is known for building a very intense bond with a single person in particular, and Kinjo is definitely like this. Some dogs are just friendly to everyone, but what makes the Akita bond feel particularly strong is that they don't tend to care about other people. They reserve that love for you. It makes it feel more real and genuine.
In my neighborhood there are labs that love everyone and will go and greet everyone they see. Not the Akita. Doesn't give two licks about other people. But for you, you get intense devotion.
I'd recommend Akitas more if they didn't require so much work. They're notoriously independent thinking and have low obedience. Plus they tend to be very dog aggressive and have high prey drives so having other animals around is a risk.

I think 🤔 those who cry 😭 it’s bc they are missing a loved one . Or were at some point in their lives abandoned too? Dog is a best companion to a human and to see or even think that the same humans mistreat dogs that’s a no , no . I hope I have a dog in the near future but I will adopt a needed one. Although in the movie no mistreat or abandoned showed but reality is yes some people mistreat them. I wish for all dogs to be loved and find a good caring and loving family.

You just buy yourself a tragedy...well maybe a baby turtle that grows to be 150 years old, so i sure wouldn't live to see it die, maybe ? or i heard about Parrots that live like 80 years...oh nm i don't own any airspace to let my buddy fly around in
