I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

can we get an "audio was not recorded by spectresoundstudios" tshirt?
Mile0 Great idea
"This t-shirt NOT designed by Spectre Sound Studios
"
“This is not a Fugazi tshirt”
I'm ordering a few hopefully he won't pull a Gibson
great idea lmao
Really cool you got Billy Corgan on the show Glen.
I love that video where Phil tells his floyd rose guitar that at night he looks at pictures of hard-tailed guitars on line LOL
Helm of the Anti-lemon I dreamed of smashing my Jackson model 6 till I half blocked it !!!!!
@@gilbertspader7974 I hear ya. I've kind of been documenting my journey with this frustration on my own channel. Not ready to give up though, I wanna be able to use that whammy bar as much as I want!
I don’t get why people hate floating bridges so much. Ok, it did take me a while to set it up properly, but now I only have to really tune it once per string change, the rest is really minor tuning tweaks once every 3-4 days.
Also, the way they react when bending is just amazing
@@Kiirxas YMMV though right? I had a horrible time with mine, I changed the spring configuration it has helped a lot with tuning stability though not perfect. Also mine is a license/special which makes a difference as opposed to an original.
Helm of the Anti-lemon mine is an ibanez edge zero II. And from what I’ve heard and also tried, a well set up floyd rose can take just as much abuse, even if it’s licensed.
It’s a pain in the ass to get “right” tho, I’ll give you that
Huge practical value in videos like this, thank you very much.
You’re very welcome!
I prefer the horizontal 2×12
Not to discount the entertainment value there. I found Phil McKnight very humorous in this live event and the banter was even better than a solo presentation.
@@CooperAATE I'm with you. I have a 212 combo that I've been wanting to split into a head and cab. I think it'll be much wider than the vertical 212 they demo. I'd be skeptical of leaving my head hanging off both sides like that.
@@SpectreSoundStudios got the zombie and it cranked loud enough for full metal practice but I had to get the katana 212 cab cuz the 4ohm cab blew my kat head ( 8ohms) is it even much louder ? I gotta wait 2 weeks to get back my kat head ugh
The more time passes the more I love vertical cabs! The vertical 2x12 sounds amazing.
I have an old Carvin BRX212 which has a downward firing 12", it's f*ing magical
If I put the horizontal Harley Benton cabinet 2x12 vertically, isn't it the same?
@@martingreschner3268 almost 100% yes. Some vertical 2x12 have the top cone tilted slightly upwards so you hear it better than if it’s pointing forward
1x12 3:13
2x12 H 3:25
2x12 V 3:43
4X12 4:00
2x12 V & 4x12 6:21
2x12V the best
2 out of 3 of my favorite guitar youtubers. Now only if Dan from Guns n Guitars could get in. Phil picks materials and components, Dan builds the guitar, amp and cab and Glen gives the honest review.
As a girl who just bought a horizontal hb 2x12: that cab is reaaaaally amazing when you dial in your tone right, say whatever you want, but it’s not just a good cab. That paired with a marshal dsl20 head and a couple of pedals can really create “my ultimate tone”. They might both be cheap, but that thrashy but still defined tone you can get with them paired is perfect for me and my type of music.
I love the tone I get so much that if I record an album any time soon I’ll just bring my amp and cab to the studio
Plus the horizontal 2x12, (I bought 2 of them), has a stereo option whereas the vertical one does not!
What pedals you using?? I just like a plain TS9 for a boost usually
Haunted Smores I use a dunlop crybaby original, it’s not true bypass, so it colors the tone a little bit. I also have a couple others, but they don’t affect my tone at all when turned off (I only use them for clean sounds)
@@Kiirxas Dope!! I've honestly never owned a wah before but I would like one for some old studio tricks like using a cocked wah for certain bass tracks.(Learned that from watching Warren Huart) Brendon Small constantly preaches about the Dimebag wah for it's gentle oscillation, I guess some wahs tend to get a little too quacky!
I have literally been looking at this with a Marshall dsl20h, thanks for this comment, this solidified me using this 2x12 over Marshall's ar212 which has celestion 70 80s
55 seconds in and Glenn already shouting at people wasting his time! Already love it! Also loving Plillip McKnight for all his work - best video I could come upon this Friday evening!
They all still sound really good period. It doesn’t get better than this, these guys are like the Schecter of cabs!
Regarding road worthiness, I've been gigging my 1x12 for around 5 years and the only thing that was damaged was the tolex so pretty sturdy too!
3:11 - 1x12
3:24 - Horizontal 2x12
3:42 ; 4:51 - Vertical 2x12
3:59 - 4x12
6:21 - Vertical 2x12 + 4x12
Question: is Mesa capitalizing on the brand, i.e. the cabinets are good, but not so much to cost a ton?
Glenn, if you are invited to TGU20, first thing i would suggest is to film a "how to record audio for youtube" tutorial with the audio guys from Thomann.....
Two of my favs in one awesome video!! This was amazing.
As a player, 4x12 sounded bassier and a lot more sound, but as a listener from a distance I am often surprised that 2x12 sounded warmer where 4x12 usually sounded brighter and more stringent.
How much does it cost me to import that sweet running water sound from the background?
Harley Benton everywhere. The Thomann campus is taking it's toll.
I’m jumping in, great company for us mortals! 👊🏾
Glenn, i got a 2x12 by Harley Benton, you included it somewhere in the description, thank you very much for this!
It's me again.
Yes, it's still great and I'm looking to get a horizontal one as well due to better sound dispersion!
Always good to do tone comparisons.
How did I not find this before now!? I love both of these channels.
Phil and Glenn is the ultimate pro wrestling tag team champions! We need more collaborations between you two, please!
Two of my favorite dudes. I’ve always been a 1x12” fan. Most guitarists I know are into the 4x12 but not me
Nice seeing Phil on the show! The vertical HB is awesome!
Dude thank you so much for this video. I wanted to watch this video for awhile
I can't wait to get myself a 2x12 Harley Benton Cab!
Vertical or Horizontal?
@@AntmanFelix I like the vertical version
@@trashboy9517 Cool! Hope you enjoy it. I might have to get one of these as well
I got myself a horizontal one and it’s awesome for the price.
@@IllusionaryFuneral I'm thinking of a horizontal one as well. Something for my JVM205
I like taking 2 of these 4x12’s run in stereo full blast @ 11. They make great headphones!
Great! Been lately looking at Harley Benton cabs but did not find any honest reviews, thanks!
Funnily enough, I was looking at HB cabs last night and thought that the vertical 2x12 would be a good option for cost and being practical to take to places so I'm glad it's got some serious approval from you guys. I'm looking to get a new and fairly cheap practice/recording setup in the next few months as I'll have a load of time to finally finish the two albums I've been working on for years. Thanks to your advice, I'm pretty adamant that I'm going to re-record everything and do it better.
Did you end up getting the cabinet? How was it?
@@jeffallen3382 I did, yes. I found it to be very good and feels remarkably well built for the money. The speakers can be a little honky at times but on the plus side, the ability to easily remove the front grille means it's very easy to get your mic placement.
@@magnusbruce4051 thank you!
Phil's the man thanks for having him on
They sound NASTY!!! Good job guys. Loved the 2x12 horizontal
its great to see you guys
I bought one of their cheaper 2x12 cabinets about 18 months ago to try out and it sounds fine. I got a guitar sent to Australia as well with it - the guitar rocked up in about 3 weeks, the cabinet came about 10 days later (same shipping number). At that time, we didn't have GST on imports but I'd say you'd have to pay it when you pick it up now.
I used a vertical 2x12 (Sonic) for years. It was a smaller cab than the HB, actually half a 4x12. Loved it, and it was easier to haul than a 4x12
That 2x12 upright sounds killer. I think one may be a Christmas present for myself this year.
For the price, I got the 2x12 out of curiosity and have been amazed by it. The v30s are what youd think theyd be, but the cab itself is a helluva lot nicer than I ever expected. Hell, even the shipping speed was great.
I really dont know how they did it, even with high volumes. Thomann is killing it on so many levels. Kinda wish Guitar Center would take note.. Or.. Maybe have Thomann move a shit ton of stores to the states :D
2 great guys that help us all out. Thanks!
And as soon as I figure out what decently priced metal-ish amp I can afford, I think I'll be getting this vertical 2x12 :)
Dumb. The horizontal has stereo
@@CriticalElixer you only use stereo if you are connecting two heads. So it’s not dumb it’s preference.
I felt that the Mesa 2x12 in your previous video presented more of the vital low end that we get ceramic magnet speakers for than the Harley Benton. For my purpose the Vintage 30s could populate a very large 2x12 box I got from the 70s and that HB box could be used to test the sound of some AlNiCo blues in a closed-back box (an experiment I've been working on). BTW the price with shipping of a Marshall 4x12 from Thomann is something I intend to avail myself of before my President outlaws it. 🤘 Thanks Glenn.
As a European, it feels like a no-brainer for me to seriously consider buying one of those.
Same, dude
great video! more like this please.
The 2x12 sounds amazing! It gave my crappy crate gt1200H a more beefy sound and definition and it made my randall rx120rh sound even more clear, all with the stock china speakers
i bought the 1x12 a few months ago and its the real deal! im gonna get the vertical 2x12 or 4x12. Also like Phil didnt have a problem, just showed up at my doorstep.
I got the 2x12 horizontal. Love it!
Love those Ibanez guitars too!
Very cool to hear that they are front-loaded cabinets! That's an excellent feature and major design difference from Mesa cabs.
Care to explain your reasoning behind front vs rear?
I'm really liking that 2x12 vertical. Even with the 'guess work' sound, I can tell it's got some punchy lower mid stuff going on. I may have to check into this one further.
I've been needing an amp and cabinet, so these help. Man these UA-camrs meet up a lot. I'm kinda jealous. Hahaha \m/
Phil's who makes your guitar video is top draw - a must watch.
Imagine the vertical 2x12 with the joyo mjolnir, that would be amazing!
Glenn, I have a question. I don’t know if you ever addressed this or not, but what are your thoughts about removing the casters from a 4X12 cab after you set up live or in the studio? My casters pop in and out and I swear once I took them off, my tone improved a lot. Even the Overdrive seemed to kick a bit more. I actually wound up dialing back the gain a little when I set the cab directly in the floor. Did I really notice the difference? Or was it confirmation bias since I was expecting a change? I know this is an old video, but figured it would be the right video to ask this question.
This vid helped me seal the deal on a 2x12. Put a dv77 next to the v30 after it was broken in….amazing tone. Sound great when mic’d up. A little different tone than a mesa cab but still f’n brutal and lighter!
We already seen this video Glenn 😂😂😂 still love those cabs though
I weirdly have been into 1x12s recently. Got one out of necessity due to a move and just for ease of playing smaller gigs, but I now think I actually prefer 1x12s nowadays. Never would have guessed!
FYI! The vertical slant 2x12 cab is Mono and the straight regular 2x12 is stereo! Ordered two 2x12 straight cabs today for my stereo setup. I like the option of running only one cab in stereo when on a smaller stage.
Well I was debating buying a 1x12 v 2x12 and now that I’ve seen this video. This was the perfect video for me rn.
You have any thoughts on Harley Benton's alternate 1x12 cab, the one that isn't vintage? The price is a little bit cheaper, but it catches my eye because the vintage 30 sound was never really my favorite.
I feel like such a sucker for having bought the amp/cab jubilee combo on Sweetwater for 900 bucks a year ago. I will be ordering these from now on!
Hi Glenn, great video! I use an 80 watt solid state amp modelling combo, the Roland Cube 80XL. I want to add an extension cab to it, to fatten up the tone and add base, would the 1 x 12, 2 x 12 horizontal, or the 2 x 12 vertical add more body / base to the sound? The 4 x 12 would be too big for me. Thank you in advance.
I have the horisontal 2x12 cab myself since 10 years or so, its crazy good value, 16mm plywood, metal handles and corners (Marshall uses plastic for example), now you also get free shipping to Sweden where i live when you buy for over 199€ without any weight limit, otherwise 10€ flat rate shipping. When i started bouying from Thomann in about 2006 they had flat rate shipping for 15€ and no free shipping at all.
I went to Thomann few months back to buy a cab, cause I wanted to try all 1x12 in person before buying...I tried harley benton, Mesa, Engl, Orange, Marshall, all with a 5150 II 50W... Ended up buying the Engl pro cab without any shadow of a doubt.
If you are on a budget maybe consider it, but otherwise try them against other stuff, cause it's not only the speaker itself that matters...
Cheers
Excelente Glenn!
My favorite was the horizontal 2x12. But I also have a soft spot for 212s because I run a Mesa Lonestar 2x12 with black shadows.
Buying a 4 12 cab this week!!!!! I have a Laney 120 irt. I was holding out on getting the Laney cab, so glad to know I can can get a fully loaded cab with Vintage 30s for 400 USD DOLLARS.... WOW!!! SOLD!!!!!
Hey Glenn, if I'm using a cab just for recording, does a 2 x 12 offer any benefit over a 1 x 12? Especially if I'm only micing up one speaker, does the cab size make a big difference?
make sure you use "tone chalk" when you mark the mic position on the grille cloth!
Glenn, what is your recommendation for a mic set to buy for home drum recording? Thomann sells Shure sets with SM57s, AKG set with P4s, t.Bone sets with DC 4000s.. price ranges like up to 800$ maybe.
Is this a reupload? I feel like i have already seen this video before
This feels like a second version, but yeah, this has been up before.
The "Audio was NOT recorded by SpectreSoundStudio might sound a bit familiar :P
He has multiple videos from Thomann. This is from this summer though.
Is this the recomment ? I feel like I have already read this comment before
The Tone King did the same video. DIfferent guitar player though
Loving that hiss. You definitely cleared my sinus.
Other cabs make your nose bleed.
Grabbing a pair of the vertical 2x12's once I get back to work, it's a smoking deal and I can leave my port city's at home when I gig. Perfect.
See now I’ve got to save up for the 2x12 vertical cab.
I still swear by a 2x12 combo + a 2x12 cab. Just such a super versitile rig.from studio, bedroom, small gigs to decent sized shows. you can practice with your actual tone, or knock the paint off the walls at a dive bar...and at big shows its awesome to be able to use your amp as a monitor.Im drooling over a matchless but ill probably end up getting a katanna.
Hi, I’ve noticed a rash on my left arm & swollen thumbs .. do you think I have scratchy pots? worried
I have both the vertical and horizontal 2 X 12 - well worth the wait for shipping to the US.
Unfcknblvbl hello. Which one would you recommend?. I have found the horizontal one second hand for 140$ and thinking to use it in vertical position. Does it make sense to you?. Thanks!
What is shipping time to like central US ??? I'm very intrested in a Harley Benton 4x12
I have a Boss Katana head, and the horizontal 212 Harley Benton cab, and it’s a heck of a portable, decent sounding rig. Seriously, pick up one of these cabs.
A while ago I built my own oversized 2x12 closed back cab. From experience I can say my DIY 2x12 sounds better than 90% of all 4x12s I ever played. The best sounding cab I ever played was a Hiwatt 4x12 with Fane speakers, but that cab costs around 3k.
I think the best Cab I heard was the Hesu 2x12 Vertical
That was a Harley benton 2x12
Sacksmasher078 i didn’t meant any cab from the video
Does anyone know for sure if the 4 x 12 speakers are Front Loaded or Rear Loaded? I can't find any info on the Thomman site.
Hey glen. Have you got that Harley bentan vertical 212 yet? Would love to see you shoot it out against other cabs and to see you mic it up without the grill on. And just wondering, why didn't you get that 212 first instead of the horizontal one you got?
Well, I'm glad I bought the horizontal 2x12. I got it cuz it was the only one in stock at the time, but judging by this video it's the one I would have preferred anyways.
Good shootout.
What about putting a horizontal cab on its side to make it more vertical amd vice versa?
I was waiting for a video like about a long time
Can you make a video about using direferents mic interfaces (quality, price) while recording cabinets
What would make HB the absolute perfect intro to gear is if Thomann started either making deals with NA warehouses or opening them themselves to make an end-run around international shipping. Call AVShop you absolute genuine geniuses!
Two days ago I bought (my last amp head) a Mark V 90w head & realized i need a new better cab for it. I like the vertical one a lot but no stereo capability is the one thing holding me from ordering this week. Might not even use that feature but its better to have and not need than to need and not have. Still on the fence. Vertical is not in stock atm so i have time. The Mark V is FUCKING killer by the way. Only added a 12 band eq to the fx loop and it is a BEAST. I haven't been this happy playing guitar in a very long time.
Ha! We evaded Spider hell and got a nice treat with Phil!
Vertical oversized 2x12s rock! The best compromise I guess. I've built a rock solid one from a TubeTown kit. 4x12s are kinda unnecessary these days imho. All they do is beating up your back. Even on bigger stages...stuff is miked up anyways.. Thanks for the video! Definitely confirms my opinion...I sometimes wondered if I should get a 4x12, 'cause like a friend said "2x12s are not heavy metal!!!" No buddy, just no.
I’m saving to run an EVH Iconic and I was going to get the 2x12 but I think the Iconic is too big for the cab so I’m going with. 4x12, it’s bigger and I like the bass response better
no link to Phil's channel...
Glen makes a great Thomann sales PERSON
I discovered the Harley Benton 212" vintage cab about 5 years ago. I wanted a extension cab for the Hughes&Kettner Attax 80 I bought for my son.
I recommended the cab to everybody that was holding a guitar, and throughout the years 5 guitarists more (those who thanked me for the guess...) bought one of these, let it be a 412", a 212" horizontal or vertical. All of them are satisfied with the built quality of the cab and speaker. Two complains about the tolex came up, I recommended glue, problems solved.
Btw., the tolex of my Tecamp L 810, that is 8 times the price of a HB 212", shows wear, too. And I use glue, too.
And I know 2 HB 212" cabs that are older than the one my son plays (with a moded Peavey Valveking now) for 5 years. And
I think that those Harley Benton Vintage cabs are the fucking best bang for the buck. And a lot of guitarists would agree with me.
I was kind of expecting but was still surprised that difference between the three wasn't larger than it was on to "tape".
Here's the thing they don't tell you, the shipping TIME. It's been a month and a half and it's still not even in the states yet.
Hey man, relax. Here in the old dying world you're not only waiting your ass off for something to arrive from the States or Japan, you'd also better get some lubrication because government wants a piece of your ass.
