- In this video we are looking at the Chrysler Crossfire, a 2-seater RWD coupe! Chrysler wanted this car to help build their brand, giving it a design that many people loved. There even was a supercharged SRT6 version that packed some good power. Unfortunately, not everything went smoothly and I have found 6 major flaws and reasons that I felt caused this car to be cancelled. I've been driving my 2005 Crossfire for 11 years and still love it despite the occasional expensive or hard to find part. It's easily the best car I have ever owned. I now have 202k miles on it.
I loved mine. Got it at an auction for 3200 with 83k miles. I got for our dealership my father owns. I end up keeping it. So much fun! I had the module for the convertible top go and it was really hard to find and expensive to install and replace.

My son had to have 4 small parts sent here from Germany which took a few months to receive, cost me $1,800...runs great now!! 😊
My wife and I are 72 years young and decided to finally get a fun car. A dealer in town who has specialty cars, got us a 2007 Crossfire convertible in MINT condition with 9400 miles. Needless to say, we are having a blast with it..I even get to drive it once in awhile..

I have a 2004 black crossfire for four years now and i think its a very fun reliable car ,its got very low mileage and i don't drive it very often but when i do it makes me smile .

I’ve owned my 2005 Crossfire Coupe Limited since 2015. I never thought I would love a car but I love this one. It gets lots of looks and compliments and I love driving it. It’s a fun car.
How is the reliability. I would like to get a used one with a manual transmission.

i have a 2005 crossfire convertible limited with 6 speed manual transmission, i really love it but the only problem with this car it is very rare so it is hard to find some parts for it , other than that it is an amazing car i use it as a daily car , you can enjoy with this lovely car just by driving it , i really wish if chrysler didn’t stop making it

I really love my 2004 Crossfire. Have not had a bit of trouble out of it. I like the smooth look of the exterior. I'm very pleased with it and would own another one.

I am now on my second Crossfire, both bought new and love this outstanding car. Most of the comments were accurate on reasons for cancelation, many including dealer price gouging on purchase, very limited availability and impossible to custom order. I disagree on value, people were paying above sticker for the car when launched, waiting for one, if the dealer could get it because of allotments and then finding servicing difficult and expensive. I will never part with my Crossfire Limited Roadster and to this day it draws raves from onlookers for a car that still turns heads. Since 2004 of ownership, I have not had a single failure or mechanical issue. I think it was and remains a great value.
My experience has been the same. 2004 crossfire coup blaze red. Stick. The auto slows it considerably.

I have a 2005 Crossfire SRT6 convertible I bought new and it now has 6,132 miles on it. Runs great and is in showroom condition. Had to have the convertible top replaced after a mouse chewed a hole in it. Now in mouse proof storage!

Just bought a 2004 Crossfire with 49000 miles. Had been looking at this car for years, but was always to pricey. Now we have a great car that we always wanted. Absolutely love this ride. Always get "THE LOOK" from other drivers. This car is in showroom condition, with no rust , dings or dents. Love this car

It wasn't a Chrysler. It was a straight up 1990s Mercedes SLK. Even had the exact same interior. That's why nobody bought one. You could buy a used SLK, with nicer amenities and build quality (Chrysler used cheap plastics) for less than a Crossfire. The car made no sense to buy.
I agree though, I have 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, has transmission slippage but besides that it still drives like a dream. I actually prefer driving that than the Toyota Minivan I have.

I own three Crossfires. Good job Marspeed on this well put together review. I laugh when I read some comments below saying the Crossfire is unreliable. Clearly from people that have not owned one, or more likely trolls looking to stir up trouble.
Yeah I didn’t really talk about reliability for this one like the other episodes. It probably had some issues (as do many/all Chryslers) but they screwed up worse than that for this one.
Its the same idiots who say all the 1st gen cars from the mid 2000s are unreliable when you see an abundance of them of them on the road today i mean literally you cant go one day with out seeing a 2005 or newer charger or 300c yet they are unreliable cant stand when people talk out there ass
I've got an 07.convertable....i love driving it...but new parts are almost non existent...and no Chrysler dealers around with test equipment..im thinking of selling it because it's expensive to run
@@dogtieredwozear6098 don't use Chrysler. Use a local Mercedes tech. And you can use Mercedes parts that match the part. Theres a few cars the xfire shares parts with.
I tried..but in u.k when you give them your reg....and they see it's a crossfire there not interested and just as expensive.they say there test equip won't work on a Chrysler....bullshit it's 90%merc
I own a 2005 convertible so will share a few personal insights on the Crossfire. The convertible with the top up gives much more headroom than the coupe. Being 6'4" tall I have to tilt my head when sitting in the coupe but do not need to in the convertible. What I like about the Crossfire is the fact that you are getting Mercedes engineering with a fresh and interesting design. The coupe in my opinion is a very polarizing design in that most either really like it or do not. The convertible design just looks more balanced and is liked by almost everyone. I can see why many were concerned about the price tag when new but now as a used vehicle the Crossfire offers a big bang for your dollar and is not often seen since so few were produced in it's five year run.
I will mention that the Crossfire got the first generation SLK running gear but this is actually a good thing as the next generation SLK engine had timing gear issues. There are some common issues with the Crossfire but are well documented and easy to find fixes for on the Crossfire forum and regional club sights.
The two things I find that can be issues visually with the Crossfire are the standard 7 spoke wheels that to my eye give the Crossfire a kit car appearance and the center console silver paint on finish which really cheapens the appearance of the interior. The SRT wheels to my eye give the Crossfire a much more modern and balanced look and you can get the wood grain decals to put over the silver center console which gives the interior the rich look it deserves. In summary I would encourage any one looking for a well made and eye catching 2 seater car to put the Crossfire on their list of considerations. We could not be happier with our convertible and you will not find a better looking rear end of any car of that era.
How much more headroom would you say is the difference between the coupe and convertible? I'm 6ft2
I purchased an '06 (New) in '08 SRT6 and now have 280,000 miles on the car. Love it.
Hertz rented Crossfires and I was like a 16 year old kid with dad's car when I was lucky enough to get one. I liked the car, the design, and especially the performance.
The only SRT6 ever, I wanted one so bad but went with a 300c in 2005 instead.

I have 2 of these gorgeous cars. One is a Roadster 100 000 miles and the Limited has only 16 000 miles. Both look and drive great.
Funny thing, I have not yet seen a bad looking Crossfire. They seem to look good even after many more miles on the clock.

@@countrybabe1111 I am in the UK and the standard crossfire is not worth much. it therefore follows that if the damage is greater than the market value, insurers just write em off and do often. it does not help that Fiat/Chrysler don't really make any of the panels for them anymore
Great looking car and very reliable (despite what people think): should have been better thought through to put it ahead of its competitors not behind. For two smart companies they made some major production and marketing errors !!
I actually love the fake vents on the side, I think they are done well and adds a lot of character. Normally I hate fake side vents just not this one.

I loved my crossfire convertible. I had a black SRT6 with a terracotta colored interior. It definitely wasn't the most luxurious car on the inside, but it was fun to drive. I wish I would never have gotten rid of that car, I think of it often.

@@tylercouture216 I currently have a 2005 300c. It looks like new inside and out. I love it and have a heck of a lot of fun driving it. I also just got a 2020 Lincoln Navigator Black Label and I still think about which car I'm going to drive for the day. I catch garbage from people all the time about driving an older car but Chrysler did such a good job styling the exterior of that car that it has a timeless appearance. It's still one of the best looking cars on the road. The interior is not really that fancy, typical for Chrysler but it's still a great car and I have no thoughts on getting rid of it at all.

I have an XRT6 and it is an awesome car. It will do under 5 sec 0-6. Bolt ons and tuning can push this car to almost 400 HP. It gets a lot of looks. I am keeping mine stock. They are already going up in value.
7:41 *WRONG!!!* The air intake is exclusive to the Xfire but the exhaust is identical to the Mercedes-Benz SLK320.
9:05 My "butt time" in the Limited expires at the 3 to 4 hour mark, so I have a cushion I use on longer rides. The SRT-6 rides much more harshly still. This can be mitigated by installing Koni adjustable shocks but it's something you'd best keep in mind.
Most Chrysler dealers (except for the few which still employee their original *Xfire tech)* are completely inept at repairing the vehicle and may even refuse to service the car. Your best bet is finding a competent independent German (Mercedes/BMW specialist) repair facility in your area.
Butt time is the same on the Benz R170 I have.
Many sports cars over the years (Porsches, Lotus 7, Morgan,etc) all with great handling with comfortable ride vs these.
I have the Alabaster White Crossfire Coupe and it is one fun car to drive. Took it to the Tail of the Dragon in 2018. I was amazed by what that car can do.
My ex's dad has/had an SRT6. He loved it and said the only better car he'd driven was a Fiat Barchetta (mind you this was long before the FCA merger).
I’ve always loved the Crossfire, never could pick a favorite between the coupe or convertible, but loved the top-up (and down) look of the convertible very much and saw it as a more substantial and stylish competitor to the original Audi TT! It still looks great in 2019 too. Thanks for posting this!

We recently bought a low mileage Crossfire roadster and love it. When these cars first appeared I couldn't afford one at the time but vowed that I would have one someday. It is a fun-to-drive, classy car that still turns heads. I love driving it in the mountains.

My 1998 SLK 230 is still going strong and turns heads daily. The hard-top convertible was way ahead of it's time, and offers the perfect Summer-Winter solution.

The Crossfire still turns heads even today, not bad for a 15+ year-old car. Love it or loathe it, you can't ignore it.
The Daimler-Benz R170 platform might not have been the latest at the time, but it was/still is reliable. This M112 engine is rock solid, so is the transmission.
They were expensive at the time, for sure. But ironically these days they are really cheap - how many V6, 6-speed manual, rear-wheel drive, reliable coupes can you have under 10k€? They seem even cheaper these days where I live, considering the ridiculously high CO2-taxation on *new* cars...
Also, there's speed cameras *EVERYWHERE* so having hundreds of HP doesn't make a lot of sense. 215hp is enough to have fun.

Marspeed, you put together, researched, this car very well. I agree with yours and others here for the demise of this car. But, what a bang for the buck in the used market today. We bought a 2005 SRT6 coupe in Sapphire Silver Blue with 39,800 miles (low mile ones are still out there) on her 15 months ago. Yes, the steering is not rack and pinion, but we just returned from a 5 day trip, driving the Tail of the Dragon (11 miles with 318 turns) on US 129. We did this 4 times. We are a novice at this but this car felt like it was on rails. Very torquee motor and the auto stick allowed us to stay in the power band, spending time in 2nd and 3rd. Thanks again for your review!

@@MarspeedCars Not driven on a closed track, quite honestly , I never felt the older steering technology in this car was an issue. She drives tight and right. The performance tires (new in Dec., 2018), certainly adds to this. Keep your eyes open for one...they are out there. The drivetrain is bullet proof. 👍

@@manoelramon8283 m112 is good engine is basicly m113 with 2 cyl cut off, and the m113 engine is one of the most reliable engine mercedes ever built. You will drive it for many miles if you maintain the car :)

I own one of the earliest examples of the crossfire and for a car that’s over 15 years old, it’s held up very well. The only issues I get are mild corrosion, which plagues most cars in the UK anyway, and typical Mercedes electronic issues for a car of its age.
Mechanically it’s solid, no real issues beyond the fact it’s an “old” car, so typical consumables like bushes and gaskets.
Driving wise, it’s not as bad as people think. 215hp is enough, not mind-blowing but hardly slow. It makes a nice noise, a very unique smooth tone, almost inline 6 sounding. The controls are rather heavy but easy to use, however I will concede that the steering is the worst part of the car. It’s numb, slow and vague, but does have nice weight to it at least.
I’ll also admit the quality of the interior trim is pretty weak, it’s cheap plastic and Napa leather which ideally should be upgraded if you want to spend the money, although it does look nice.
Which brings me onto the best part of the car, the reason I and many others bought one. The styling is just fantastic, they look retro and modern at the time time, very unique and well sculpted. Some don’t like the design of the rear in coupe form but most agree the convertible looks great. I revive endless compliments from people who see it, often stopping to talk to me about the car.
For the current money they command, they are great value plus are a definite future classic.
I couldn't agree more. I've always like the look and had wondered why the were dropped. Now I know. I'd almost buy one today, but I really don't need another classic car, and I've heard stories, perhaps apocryphal, about frequent camshaft sensor failures and other sometimes hard to get or replace parts. I have a 1966 Thunderbird that I can buy almost any part I need for it, most electrical parts new and inexpensive, the same day at the parts stores. Plus I can work on most of it myself. These Crossfires, as stylish as the are, would be quite the opposite. I still admire the car and the fortitude of the owner when I see one.
One important factor related to the price was the value of the dollar in relation to the Euro.
Between the Crossfire and the last generation 200 they both were amazing designs but unfortunately they’re both gone

I drove an SRT crossfire on the track at the SRT experience at the Michelin proving grounds back in 2006. It was a good car and performed well on the track.

Thanks for this stellar, informative video! Terrific job! I just traded in my 2005 Aero Blue Coupe (61,000 miles) for a One-owner, 2013 Blue Ray Metallic Chevy Camaro (55,000 miles) in January 2020. Owned the Crossfire since April 2009. I was the second owner with only 2800 miles on the Odometer. Had zero mechanical problems until it left me stranded in a parking lot last fall, due to an electrical / computer malfunction. The car wouldn't even turn over. Nothing. Dead. Can't recall the exact verbiage of the part eventually installed -- A scrim key, perhaps? Anyway, when considering the Camaro, I created a check list of flaws with my Crossfire:
The occasional sliced finger while pulling on the driver's side metallic door handle.
No spare tire. (Camaro has one)
Useless cupholder. (Camaro has two)
Cheap, plastic console. (Broke a slat on an air vent. Better, stronger interior in the Camaro)
Premium gas. (Camaro takes Regular.)
Sluggish horsepower (215 HP compared to Camaro's 323 HP).
Limited trunk space.
Sparse Crossfire parts availability.
I really enjoyed owning the Crossfire, but after paying the $1165.00 for the parts and labor that left me stranded, I made the right choice in trading it in. Don't miss it. Having too much fun with the Camaro! : )
I just bought my Crossfire in February. I had been looking for one for over three years. But I waited until the the color combination with low mileage came available. While on vacation in Florida I came across the car and bought it. So far I love it but I did have to spend $2000.00 on repairs. It's a 2005 Beautiful Blue silver metallic with white leather interior and 42,000 miles.
Very informative. I am in UK and I thought that this car looked really great. Here it was relatively cheap. It is a strange thing with sports coupes. Some wonderful sports coupes don’t sell that well and get axed, whilst some grim commercial vehicles go on for years.

Regarding Crossfire, the coupes looked awesome, I thought it would sell better but credit Chrysler for trying. I was always a GM guy until this era and to the present Mopar all the way. Thanks for vid!
I worked for Chrysler when these were new. First of all, we can thank former GM of Europe Pres. Bob Eaton for selling Chrysler to Mercedes so they would have more US distribution since Lexus and Audi were now taking even more of their market share due to Mercedes quality issues at the time. Also, Chrysler had numerous successful product lines such as the Sebring convertible, the PT Cruiser, Ram pickups, the Dodge Intrepid, and the minivan lines at the time of purchase (1998) and Daimler sucked the cash out of Chrysler.
As for the Crossfire, the "base models" which initially came only in black (red was added later) were actually quite fun to drive. The convertible, in particular, was pure fun. Then came the SRT which were rockets on the road. The Crossfire, unlike the Nissan 350Z, Pontiac Solstice and other similar cars did not ride like a buckboard and transmit every bottle cap sized bump in the road to the passenger compartment. The Crossfire has an amazingly smooth ride for such a short wheelbase. I never liked the silver-painted dash appliques and center console, which was more an effort of Mercedes keeping Chrysler downmarket from their own brand.
The Crossfire is unique, fun to drive, reliable and an obtainable collector type car. Buy now while clean, low mileage cars are still available.

@@Matt_from_Florida Chrysler should have had Bob Lutz or Tom Gale run the company. Not a GM exec with Euro ties and no loyalty to Chrysler. It made me sick when it happened. People forget, or aren't old enough to remember, but Chrysler was on a roll in the `90s. Mercedes was losing ground to Lexus, BMW and a newly resurgent Audi. They desperately needed the cash flow and distribution.

I had one. Loved it. You are spot on about the tires - they were expensive as hell. And the routine maintenance was expensive, too.
The tires are not expensive when you buy them online, do a thorough search for the best prices 😉

I've had two Crossfires. The first was a Limited Coupe that was a joy. Came with all the bells and whistles. Hit a deer at about 70mph on the freeway, and the car did exactly what it was supposed to do. It crushed up to the driver's compartment, but I was able to drive it a short distance to a safe place, and the doors still opened. I then got an '05 base convertible which I am very happy with. No bells or whistles, and that suits me fine. Less to go wrong. I you get one thinking you're getting a muscle car, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a roadster that you can have fun with, then you won't be disappointed. Mercedes parts are easy to get, but some of the Chrysler-badged parts are just about impossible to get.

I bought a 2004 crossfire a couple of weeks ago and love it. it is the coupe limited. I think it looks very cool I do think the rear spoiler is a bit gimmicky and is annoying when doing the twisties as it is always working. I think I will pull the fuse. Apart from that I think it handles very well and inspires confidence. Came with Nitto invos. the car feels classy and one can feel it's German roots. I have seen these cars for sale in Canada with low kms and in great shape... owners seem to be going for the collector aspect. 4 - 12k c price tag. I love the roar when you reach 4k rpm as you start to hit the power band even with stock pipes and intake.

I have a 2006 Limited and its a great car but definitely not a cheap car to maintain since it is all Mercedes under the hood and the offset tires are not cheap from the dealer as stated and wear out pretty fast due to the soft rubber. Love to drive it though. Nice video.

I had a SRT 6. One of the coolest cars ever. Very fast car capable of beating most Muscle cars of the 60s/70s. I have a bad back and had problems getting in and out of it. Otherwise among the best cars I’ve owned. I currently own a Challenger Hellcat.
They should have used the retractable hardtop on the Crossfire Roadster like the ones used on the Mercedes SLK models, instead of the soft top.
The retractable top is a break down waiting to happen.
I have 2005 SRT 6. I love it with 254,000 miles. Hard to find a replacement water pump. The SRT 6 super charge has a different water pump. Nice job on the review and history.
I've never had one but I always though that car had a tough looking rear end. None like it on the road then or now.
I own a Stealth twin turbo and i just bought a Crossfire this week. The Crossfire is a blast to drive, but I'll be trying to squeeze more power out of it.

I don't understand the "unreliable" posts either. My '06 just hit 96K. It's had two sensors and an air pump replaced. That's all. I change the oil every 6K and just had a flush, fill, filter change on the the trans. Still runs like the day it came from the dealer.
My mom was buying a Dodge, Dad and I test drove a SRT6 while she did paperwork. I bought an 06 two years ago. I knew what I was getting into though. More European that anything. Helped me crosscheck some part #s, thanx.

I was the cross-fire tech at a large chrysler dealer. It failed due to having a Chrysler name badge, the public really had no idea what it is due to lack of advertising.

I have always wondered if the grooves on the hood had a functional purpose. That same design is also found in the Chrysler Aspen.

I had a roadster for 11 years - the longest I ever owned a car. I loved it and always got looks and compliments. Not arguing any of your points about why it failed, but sometimes a product is more than a sum of its parts. I think Chrysler tried to repress sales and Chrysler certainly never taught their sales personnel how to sell them. One of the best driving cars I ever owned.
I managed to buy an SRT6 this summer and really enjoy driving it, although the ride is very firm. Through this winter I will be giving it a thorough overhaul. Does anyone know if there is a way of replacing the recirculating ball steering system with a rack and pinion type?
I have an 04 and I've only had it 6 months and I love it. I'm not a big person so it's perfect for me and it's fast handles good and has become my new baby. I wish they still made them because it is a fun car. And I bought mine for 2,200.00 from a private owner who took very good care of it.
I bought my 05 SRT6 Crossfire in 2012 and I love it. I still only have a little over 30k miles on the car. I don't drive it nearly enough but the styling and uniqueness makes it a blast to drive. With a tune and smaller supercharger pulley the car easily puts out 400hp. I only wish it had come in a manual.
I loved your content. It reminds me a lot of the allante Cadillac. Maybe you could give us an synopsis on that. I had a crossfire Crystal Red Pearl metallic. I bought it for$20,000 2 years old with 3,000 mi it was a convertible automatic. Limited. Had it for about two-and-a-half years fifteen thousand miles and sold it for 18.000 it was a great car. Only took premium oil changes we're 159 dollars in 2008. 🌞😉

I drove one and it was a rough ride on anything but perfect roads. 1st gear was really short, I just started in 2nd gear
You have to get used to the manual.Reverse is tricky.
