He's right. Back in the day there was no food in abundance like today. And even if this guy has no neighbors he can sell the meat or could at least eat some of it himself in order to minimize the loss.
there is a difference between hunters and poachers. Hunters take extreme care when in the wilderness. And they have to. If they destroy their hunting grounds that only harms not only them but the entire ecosystem. Poachers hunt not caring about the area. They would destroy it if it meant catching their game. Its a difference between long term and short term practice.
My mom, in all her years of hunting, had one rule. "If I can't guarantee a kill in one shot, I do not take the shot". Nothing is more heartbreaking for a hunter than an animal suffering needlessly. My mom's still tough as nails and has unprecedented integrity for someone over 70. A lot of other boomers I've met have been notoriously selfish or arrogant.
a good hunter understands that if you fuck up the ecosystem of an area, you can't hunt there anymore. take care of the land, and it'll take care of you.
At 14:52 Spike mentions how impressed he is to see John lift a 150 lb. sheep over his shoulder, commenting that he would have some lower back pain had he done that. Doesn't he mean he'd have Lumbago?
Its still a better hunting game than most actual hunting games out there lol. The open world of it also adds a lot to it. Considering how big the game is and that this is only a fraction of what you're actually able to do it's understandable. Although online mode does allow you to get wagons to haul your kills in.
In fact, every time you skin, you take some meat, which I think is a big game(its name), and that you can take the skinned animals for their meat, provided that you can carry the corpse with a horse, and another thing is that in Red Dead, basically with You play horses that have very very high prices in reality, Turkmen, Arabian horses, etc. Briefly they are not ordinary horses at all.

@@kingrichardiii6280 Yeah, couldn't agree more. The decision to take responsibility for your food is not one done out of malice towards animals. It's usually one made from love. You put in the work to butcher it, you put in the work to line up a clean shot, you put in the work to pack it out. By the end, you think about every yard you had to drag it, every hour you spent cutting meat, and you have gratitude and respect for that animal every time you take a bite. Arthur and John actually DO take the meat from their kills. The game only shows a quick skinning animation instead of the whole butchering process. But the meat is still added to your inventory. It wouldn't have been too much more work to add a second "processing" stage where he takes some time to carve up some of the meat. Heck, even the bones, tendons, organs, etc. are useful in some kinds of crafting, so you could sell or use the skeleton and tendons for equipment upgrades at camp.
@@Foxxie0kun AFAIK, changing the animation skin from pelt to muscle would take little effort, but animating a carcass would require a whole new base model!
@@edi9892 it looks like the animal model is just its carcass with skin draped over it. So it doesn't need to have a separate rig to animate the carcass. *Its already rigged up.* Unless you mean the *skinning animation*. In which case, it would double the work needed. But not as much as you think. Many animals in the game share the *exact same* skinning animations due to having similar body types. Deer, pronghorn, wolf, fox, coyote, and boar have the same skinning animation, for example. The obly real difference is whether something is taken from other bosy parts, like a wolf getting _something_ taken from its head. Its basically a tacked on addition with no real modeling. So they should just share the same "butchering" animation. Off the top of my head the skinning animations are: 1 Snake 2 Bird feathers 3 Bird meat 4 Raccoon, iguana, opossum, rabbit 5 Wolf, coyote, fox, deer, pronghorn, boar 6 Elk, moose 7 alligator 8 Bear But for the sake of simplification, I'll remove the Bird meat animation so it'll be replaced by Bird butchering animation. So that's 7 skinning animations, which means only 7 butchering animations are needed. Not 200 for the 200 species the game has.

As a hunter myself (and an RDR2 player) I love that this comment section is actually full of people who understand that hunters cares about animals, and do more for wild animals than all the haters who sit at home thinking hunters are just out to murder animals for no good reason.
My uncle used to deer hunt (Bow hunting too, I believe) and I remember he'd always send us a lot of venison sausage if he had a good season. The meat always tasted fantastic too, which after watching this would seem to imply the animals didn't suffer needlessly or need to be run down (Not a lot of lactic acid). It's not for me, personally, but I understand the need for it and as long as it's carried out ethically I don't have an issue with it. Honestly, meat you get from a hunter who respects the animal and makes sure it doesn't needlessly suffer is more ethically sourced than most of what you'll find at a deli in a supermarket.
@@Iris_1217 A good kill is a big part in the taste of the meat (Not wounding any intestines for example), but another part is properly taking care of the meat afterwards. It needs to be treated in a particular way to get the best result. It's nice to hear you say that, as there are so many "animal friends" who hate hunters, because they have decided that they are in fact just murderers who hunt for sport and just enjoying killing. They don't understand that hunters do more for wild animals than they ever will sitting home eating vegetables, signing petitions and spouting on social media. I'm a hunter in Sweden, and in my opinion we have some of the most, if not the most ethical hunting in the world. Of course there are always rotten eggs, but we do everything possible to make sure the animal is taken care of in the proper way, and do not suffer.

If there are too many in one spot, they're going to end up burning out a lot of their food sources, and many are going to suffer painful deaths via starving or malnutrition.

I was actually more curious about what he'd think of the tracking process versus the main action of actually killing and harvesting the animal. I wish the showed him some of the actual story missions in the game where you hunt animals, or the legendary hunts. Also, I want him to know that I almost always took the meet back to camp.
I'm a hunter. Unfortunetly we do not have eagle eye in real life, tracking an animal can be quite difficult depending on the terrain and vegetation. If it's wounded it will be easier, but tracking an unwounded animal is very difficult unless you happend to be somewhere were the tracks are easily visible because of the terrain. I'm in Sweden, and we utilize dogs A LOT for our hunting, and they do most of the tracking, however I just got back from a moose hunt today and we were tracking a moose only a few hours ago.
@@getous I assumed you don't have special vision powers in real life. But the game does give you clues like droppings, tracks, and broken foliage ... there are entire mission based around tracking animals, and you can go hunting in the snow where animals leave extremely visible trails. @@TheJadedJames Yes I was just joking about the vision ofc. Droppings really only tells you if it's fresh or not. Tracks in snow is very easy to see, however can be difficult to follow if you're on foot and not in skiis for instance. Tracks in the forest can be difficult the in non-snowy conditions unless its soft terrain. Broken foliage can give you signs that something has been there, but rarely if it's recent or not. Where we hunt for instance, we know the tracks the animals usually take. They have their set routes they always use, you can see a "path" through the woods from where they usually move, even if they haven't been there in a while.
@@TheJadedJames the mechanics are simple and pretty stupid. Use eagle eye and follow the white trail. And if you’re in a mission just use eagle eye and go to the gold dust. it's also illegal in every state I'm aware of in the US, at least in today's day and age. The crime is usually called "Waste of Game" or something similar and has hefty penalties. People being anti hunting because they imagine trophy hunting and wasting meat is really common, but it's a complete straw man: you aren't allowed to hunt purely for the trophy, you are legally obligated to use the meat.
I know! At least have him consult on how one can field dress a carcass to take as much of the animal away as possible, because I agree it does look like Arthur just takes the hide and antlers without any meat, but some of those animals are too big to put on your horse. The little details of taking big chunks of meat from various areas would go a long way to making the protagonist look like less of a jackass.
I don't think they really want more realism with hunting, RDR is already a slow game with a lot of actions to do and many people wouldn't be happy with longer and realistic skinning scenes.
@@keatonwastaken hunting in RDR2 already requires a substantial amount of time compared to the rest of the -poorly paced and synergized- game. Making the skinning animations longer, or ideally making a second and optional *butchering* animation, isn't going to make the game any longer.
As an alaskan who has grown up reading tundra comics, yet sadly never having gone hunting myself, this was great entertainment and learning experience as well
There isn't an animation for it, but you do get meat from the animals when you skin them. As far as the video game is concerned once you skin it you've gotten everything you can. Yes it still looks like a full body, but thats just to save on coding and resources. You can also take a Carcass back to camp to hand over to the camp cook.
Most real hunters are this way and frown very heavily upon "sport" hunters, with the pejorative term "poachers" being used for them even if they're not what most people think of when the term poacher comes up.
So I feel that I should mention that if Arthur had too much on the horses back, it won't let you put the rest of the animal on it. So more often than not, he'll just take the skin. Really scummy thing to do and leave the rest of the animal like that... But then again, Arthur's a 'Bad Man'.
This is why I think being able to have a horse-drawn cart would have been good for realism/gameplay purposes, because fully processing the carcass and taking everything (Bones, tendons, sinews, organs, etc.) would be awesome, both for increasing the player's agency over the economy (Selling bones, sinews, and other animal parts to craftsmen and such), as well as equipment upgrades and maybe even side jobs. I also think fully processing a carcass should provide "Honor" points, and leaving a partially-processed carcass should give "Dishonor" points.
Listening to him speak real about hunting shows a lot about how hunters think and I respect them a lot because it seems majority don’t like the animal to suffer much when hunting them down. I’d like to see him again and get some more reactions.

I'd love to see this guy react to theHunter: Call of the Wild! That game definitely strives to make you feel like it's realistic, and I'd be interested to see how realistic it is
Correction: The character takes everything from the animal. It's just the animation that still shows the skinned animal laying there. It's probably for ease of not having to do the animal dissection animation. But you take the meat + parts and have them in your inventory.
To be fair he really doesn't take everything, I've always thought it was implied you just couldn't carry anymore and had no choice. If you take the carcass back to camp you can donate it and I think you might be able to do the same with a butcher or you can sell it at least. If you can donate or sell them there is definitely meat left, and if you stay around a carcass animals will come eat it too.
I think the whole legendary animal and crafted clothing thing was meant to take a long time. Like you were supposed to just hunt when necessary, instead of leaving carcasses everywhere lol. So you're left with the choice of taking your time or just running through everything, and making up for your sins later
@@MrSirGiuseppe Yeah he doesn't take everything but he takes more than the animation shows. The animation basically depicts you just taking the pelt and that's it. But if you were hunting (in that scenario) in real life you wouldn't be able to carry all of the meat realistically if you shoot a 300lbs pig or sth. But then again, as you said, in real life you'd get a kill every couple of days/weeks maybe if you're going for big game, but the game obviously incentivises you to go on a killing spree. The first thing in any game i like to do is upgrade my bags, and for that you need to complete the pouches..
We need this man back, maybe have him react to the four hamish sinclair stranger missions or hunter simulator. IDK! But what I do know is that I need this man in my life! He's the best
Glad to hear i played closer to real life hunters than I thought. Always took the carcass to a butcher, always tried to make a single shot, and if it was a huge hide (bear/gator/puma/etc.) I'd bring the entire animal first, before skinning it.
2:11 I’ve always agreed with that. I understand that when you skin Boars, Bears, Elks, Moose, etc. Arthur/John also take the meat. However I always wished you could put the heavier animals on the back of a wagon at least.
One of the things i don't like is how you cant move larger animals. You can only skin them and leave the rest of the carcass behind. I get it is difficult to move, but if you have a wagon you should be able to at least drag and put it in the wagon.
They could go one step further with realism and have you quarter the animal up. Take him out in sections like in real life. To the horses (horse + horse/mule for hauling supplies) or horse and wagon.
I can honestly say that every hunter I've ever met is like this guy and if you know any that aren't, they should be. Hunters have respect for the wild and respect for the animals they are pursuing. They do not waste or disrespect their kills by leaving them to rot in the woods. The game designers should have used a field dressing animation rather than the simple skinning they went with, if they were going for realism, but I guess they were worried people would think it was too gross.
I find it incredible how many things he keeps in mind. I‘ve been in mountains multiple times and I never think about physical exertion. He though about the downwind and even the lactic acid inside the muscles of the animal. Truly impressive
The character actually doesn’t waste it you get all the meat from the carcass you just can’t tell unless you look to the right of the screen which is covered by the facecam
@@gingyplays266 the game doesn’t properly depict it because the carcass is just skinless on the ground an no meat has been taken from it even though it says meat is placed in your inventory

there is a difference between hunters and poachers.

@@kingrichardiii6280 Yeah, couldn't agree more. The decision to take responsibility for your food is not one done out of malice towards animals. It's usually one made from love. It wouldn't have been too much more work to add a second "processing" stage where he takes some time to carve up some of the meat. Heck, even the bones, tendons, organs, etc. are useful in some kinds of crafting, so you could sell or use the skeleton and tendons for equipment upgrades at camp.
@@Foxxie0kun Yep. It was done for AC3 and it felt very satisfying, leaving only bones and guts.
*Its already rigged up.*
Unless you mean the *skinning animation*.
Off the top of my head the skinning animations are:
1 Snake
2 Bird feathers
3 Bird meat
4 Raccoon, iguana, opossum, rabbit
5 Wolf, coyote, fox, deer, pronghorn, boar
6 Elk, moose
7 alligator
8 Bear
But for the sake of simplification, I'll remove the Bird meat animation so it'll be replaced by Bird butchering animation.
So that's 7 skinning animations, which means only 7 butchering animations are needed. Not 200 for the 200 species the game has.

Hunters are the some of the biggest advocates of animal conservation, and there's an unspoken bond between a huntsman and his game
Hunting is very important to ecosystems, in my state hunting had dropped to an all time low so our deer population was through the roof, well it didn't take long for a serious disease to start spreading, our state conservation department asked hunters to kill any and all sick looking deer.
@@theshizl4400 yeah it was. It was a bad few hunting seasons there was this huge buck up where we were hunting so we all wanted to bag him. A few days before the season started we saw him walking real lethargic so we just put him down and called the conservation department.
If I remember they also let people shoot 2 extra deer when all this was happening just to knock their numbers down again.
@@getous I don't think a lot of people realize that when people do what they're supposed to, hunting helps the environment by managing certain species so that there's enough food to go around to support a healthy population. Deer, for instance, aren't exactly going to plan for the long term. If there are too many in one spot, they're going to end up burning out a lot of their food sources, and many are going to suffer painful deaths via starving or malnutrition.
@@Iris_1217 Yeah. Here, to get our hunting license, theres a mandatory course with a bunch of animal and nature theory followed by a test, before the weapon tests. That theory course should be a basic course of grade school, so everyone could learn what it's all about, and the balance of nature.

I just wanted see this guy's take on those mechanics, and not just the act of shooting and skinning the animals
This fellow hunter commenting on the various hunting aspects in RDR2 was truly a blast to listen to I laughed my ass off on most of his comments. Thanks for this upload and I tip my hat off to you ole timer !
I loved this guy. He was hilarious. His beard is also a BEAUTIFUL sight to behold
I love this guy's thinking, leaving so much of the animal behind is not only disgraceful but it's dumb because so much of said animal can be used.
it's also illegal in every state I'm aware of in the US, at least in today's day and age. The crime is usually called "Waste of Game" or something similar and has hefty penalties. People being anti hunting because they imagine trophy hunting and wasting meat is really common, but it's a complete straw man: you aren't allowed to hunt purely for the trophy, you are legally obligated to use the meat.
I wished they would of hired this guy to do some hunting animations for RDR2, little details or maybe big details when hunting
@SharkTank Calm yourself before you burst a blood vessel.
I don't think they really want more realism with hunting, RDR is already a slow game with a lot of actions to do and many people wouldn't be happy with longer and realistic skinning scenes.
I wanna see that technique for skinning a raccoon he said he made
@@keatonwastaken hunting in RDR2 already requires a substantial amount of time compared to the rest of the -poorly paced and synergized- game. Making the skinning animations longer, or ideally making a second and optional *butchering* animation, isn't going to make the game any longer.
This man should of had his own character up in rdr2 😂😂😂
Yes
I’d like him to be a replacement for the trapper or just gus in online
Hamish Sinclair
He's Cripps
There is always online mode.
someone needs to show this guy some shots of someone actually collecting the entire animal.
He didn’t realize with the boar they were using dead eye slowing down time
I love this beautiful mountain man. I would love to see more of him, he's like a teacher many people would call their favorite.
This man has the manlyest beard on the earth
He's gotta groom that thing tho. I don't understand when guys grow big beards like that and then don't even take care of it.
@@DattMoss Following entropy doesn't need explaining. It's the energy required for order that does.
@@DattMoss he knows what he’s about
@@DattMoss He probably likes his beard.
@@lindaflores6326 Well yea, of course he does, same as the duck dynasty guys. It was just an opinion.
As an alaskan who has grown up reading tundra comics, yet sadly never having gone hunting myself, this was great entertainment and learning experience as well
1st time ever seeing a real life hunter rage over a fictional character leaving good meat behind 😂 this was great!
Just the hide and back straps. Realistically you’re still wasting whole elk, moose and bison carcasses.
I'm not a big hunter, but I dig this guy. He seems ethical and respectful like the types of hunters I enjoy buying meat from.
Ever have venison backstrap🤤🤤 just hits different🤷♂️
@@Foxxie0kun that sounds amazing. RDR3?
@@Foxxie0kun it would make the game much more tedious tho, it was pretty long already so it's good as it is, as it's not an hunting simulator
@@omegacxv8344 Would be great. But they don't invest in singleplayer.
Listening to him speak real about hunting shows a lot about how hunters think and I respect them a lot because it seems majority don’t like the animal to suffer much when hunting them down. I’d like to see him again and get some more reactions.
14:43 That's exactly my reaction the first time I saw in RDR2 picking up hunt like that😂HIS FACE!😂
0:29 Good to see a fellow Hawks fan hunter.
Dude this guy had me cracking UP the whole video! 😂
The disdain in his voice is so palpable, you can tell the disappointment he has now after watching that.
Hope to see more videos from him.
I'd love to see this guy react to theHunter: Call of the Wild! That game definitely strives to make you feel like it's realistic, and I'd be interested to see how realistic it is
This might be my favorite episode yet. Felt like I was listening to a friend of my grandpa talk about the same thing.
Next: Random pedestrian REACTS to getting mauled over in GTA -5
Correction:
The character takes everything from the animal.
"If he leaves that meat on there this guy is a douche bag". I love it.
Spike entirely forgot that it's a videogame, he's seriously coaching John on how to use his hunted game better.
This is hilarious.
If this guy knew history he'd know that "respect for the animal" is a pretty recent development as far as European Americans go.
It's not physically represented but he does gather the meat as well
Man's a legend. At first i didn't like him but the more that he talked the more i started to like him. Man's amazing
I like this guy already, I'd do hunting with him any day of the week, more of him please.
He's rocking the beard for a Hunter..!
2:27 Just to clarify you do use all the animals resources, it just shows the corpse with the meat on even know it’s been harvested.
He's a true expert and was a perfect choice for the video! I like him.
I like this guy, I’d love to see more of him.
I’m still not tired of this game and Spike just became another reason why! 😎
Glad to hear i played closer to real life hunters than I thought.
Always took the carcass to a butcher, always tried to make a single shot, and if it was a huge hide (bear/gator/puma/etc.) I'd bring the entire animal first, before skinning it.
you cant carry bears though, same for alligators.
He's wrong about the sniper. Zoomable snipers were invented in the 1830s
Those reactions are hilarious 😂. Great job
I find it incredible how many things he keeps in mind. I‘ve been in mountains multiple times and I never think about physical exertion. He though about the downwind and even the lactic acid inside the muscles of the animal. Truly impressive
I had no idea how funny this would be. Lassoing the deer into a headlock had me rolling.
I’m glad that the hunter was talking about how RDR2 wasted a good carcass in the game
Did he just suggest to use the bladder as a water canteen? This dude is country!
@@CoyoteRecon blame take2 for that, used up 70% of the game's budget on online!!!
@@munehboi online is ass they did not use 70% for online
“That’s a great way to break your horses leg… but I guess this guy cares about his horse as much as he cares about those skinned animals”
Had me cracking up 😂
This guy is great, perfect for RDR2
12:20 I wish that the human body worked like a gimble (camera stabilizer / gyroscope of sorts) where no matter the vertical / horizontal movement of your lower body your upper body would stay perfectly on target. Funnily enough, this is in fact how chickens heads / necks work and to an extent how our eyes / head work as well. We can focus on one spot with our sight and then no matter how we turn our body / move our focus can maintain that same point. So that was their idea for the targeting / aiming in this game.
I love how he noticed shooting over the horizon being a terrible idea. Definitely a great hunter.
