Bless your hearts. If you think Johnson City is crowded and has a lot of traffic, for the sake of your sanity, stay away from Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg. And never, I mean never, come to Nashville. Especially the downtown area. It will blow your mind.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m 70 and live in Florida but I was born in JC. Our summer vacations were spent visiting family there. Such a beautiful place. My grandmother lived on Maple Street and I have memories of walking downtown to shop with her at Kings and getting her hair done where Freiburgs is now. So sad to see the condition of the John Sevier Hotel. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve been to JC and I’ve been so homesick to visit. Your video has shown me a lot of the changes. I’m very grateful.

    yea!
I lived there in about 1982 and again in 1986. The city was not in good health then! most of downtown was near abandoned!
Now, I hear from other people that this city is now very busy and people are happy. Your video confirms this for me. I only recognize that Hotel building. Al Capone's place to sometimes live and he bought the moonshine to take back North!
    Lots of mysteries here too.
I live now in Tallahassee, Florida.
The city looks to be in a valley but is really about 1500 to 2000 feet above sea level.
People talk in storytelling mode here! I really liked that. I once overheard, in a cafeteria, someone tell someone about their trip to Walmart and this trip was a story. Not just a list in dollars and cents of what was bought. I left in 1986. The 500 boxes were now opened and auction-sold. My deceased sister sure had a lot of stuff, in this warehouse! I had to sort every single item. 200 years of family history were in these boxes.
I recall your snowy trip to Uncoli, a while back. I been by this town many times but have not visited.
Ugh, interstates. a study in stress!
what might not be apparent here, even in 1986, is just how much sprawl there is outside of city limits. At least the young generation are not all going to Chicago to work!
Actually, I was "living here" from 1981 to 1986. I lived with my sister across the Carolina line and she taught at ETSU. I would often ride with her and spend a day there in the city.

Actually flying back to SoCal for work for awhile in the transition. I just watched this video on the TV. I recently discovered, using the Comcast voice remote, that I can watch UA-cam videos on the TV. But I had to visit on my computer in order to comment. Anyway I really enjoyed the video. In 2012 we took a 5-day road trip to Greeneville, TN to go to a family funeral. So we did a lot of sightseeing and photography all the way down and back. In Tennessee we spent a lot of time in Greeneville, Jonesborough, and Elizabethton, but we never got into Johnson City, though we knew we were near it. I had no idea it was so big, with a 70,000 population. We also passed through Bristol, but never got out of the car.
So thanks for this video. I want to watch the other Johnson City video later tonight.

Speaking of malls, the first in the Tricities was the poor Kingsport Mall. It was popular for a short while and then the Johnson City and the Ft. Henry Malls took their business and it began a long sad decline until it was torn down back in the '90s. I think that the true original mall in Johnson City was the Arcade built back in the '20s or '30s in the old part of downtown near the Windsor Hotel if I remember correctly. I used to go to the Arcade Confectionary back in the '70s and it was like stepping back in time to go there. Does anyone remember the place? I haven't been there in years and guess it may have been torn down...

After retirement, my partner & I moved here 2 1/2 yrs ago because we were looking for a place in the mountains & where it's less expensive to live compared to MD. We enjoy living here but I'm still adjusting to getting around in the old downtown with the one way streets. It's a big change after living in one place my whole life but central MD can't compare to the views of JC & neither can the traffic.

Have you had any requests for stories on Eastman Chemical Company? It started out as a small cornfield production and is now worldwide with approximately 8,000 employees? They also have a small museum detailing start of company and todays status.
Also the start of Pals Restaurant. The first one being in downtown
Kingsport. They are very focused on taste, quality and production.

Seems similar to Janesville Wi. Founded same time. Also a big railroad town. Similar size. Although we actually are relatively close to Chicago area - 60-70 miles to outer burbs, 110 to city itself. Only 25 miles to Madison, Wi. We also have a civil war connection on the Union side. Abolitionists here. Lincoln stayed/spoke here. Part of Underground Railroad not just regular railroad. Mix of older and newer housing. I90/39.
