Okay, at the start of the vid I was like "yeah I mean they are indeed not really expansions, they are sorta closer to what IBS was supposed to be, but instead of being free, it's paid, but with a fix update schedule, which honestly feels like some battle pass or such." and then 7 and a half minutes in you say the same thing 😂
Another genuine criticism I have against them are the "road maps" they show for each expansion, like what you show around 7:00 like, I love the franchise, but those "road maps" they write in there is like how I bloated my exams papers with filler words to make it look long and big for my teacher. "Major rewards" and lists whatever possible, while they are completely normal things coming with a game, it's literally should so basic I shouldn't even expect it being mentioned. "Mastery updates" we all know they always add at least one meaningless mastery with updates and it brings nothing, takes me 15 minutes to get it and am done with it, it's not content, never was, it's just a weird passive goal everyone fulfills automatically eventually. The only things even worth mentioning on these are at best "new map(s)" and "raid/strikes/fractals" but even those are just a single thing.
To me Anet suffers because they aren't as big as other studios like SE making FF14 or Blizz making WoW. They simply don't have the manpower to do so, and they also don't crunch which is respectable, cuz the industry suffers from that already at many places, but everyone can feel it's rather empty and minimal what they end up making. They work and try to work with passion and I will personally never abandon the franchise as I grew up on it and if I may say, legit saved my life as a kid. The older expacs were great at release, but were neither the best since we had so much drought afterward as well. The unfortunate issue is that we expect what we would expect from similar games in terms of content amount, like what I would expect from WoW or ff14 or such games, while they lack the numbers to make the same and this way people (it's often very noticeable as there is always comparison) bring up these games and then say how little Anet makes. We expect more as we should and would, and that is normal, and that they cannot deliver due to lacking numbers that is normal as well. Things just simply won't align, and I always just hope that the new release cadence will bring them more funding to hire more people to expand the teams working on the expacs, it's a devilish cycle they have to break to be able to deliver more.
But just as you mention as well, the game is for casual players by now, and is mainly catering for total casuals, which is fine. You can notice it time to time how much they try to make you understand that the game is supposed to be played casually and give it time, not rush. Just look at Klobjarne, people complained immediately at how time gated it is with all the components, albeit all it takes is just to play the game and let it happen naturally. But most players are impatient, "we" want things as soon as available, it's the new shiny and you want it. Everything in the game is basically "OPTIONAL CONTENT" there is no real mandatory content and that works for it as you are supposed to form your own goals.
My personal problem always was that the game "always gives you options to do something or set a goal" BUT "doesn't give you the reasons to do it so you have to make your own reasoning." However I love that the game respects your time, people should understand that you CAN -freely- play any other game beside it and won't make you feel stressed out, unlike something like FF14 or WoW etc with subs or heavy content drops that makes previous content obsolete and forgotten, you can ONLY experience those once truly, if you miss those early on, you will never experience it anymore the way it was intended, unlike in GW2 for 99% of its content.

Love this Nox. ^ Us vets have definitely watched the game go through a lot of changes. To me: I think that's why GW2 is great at this point though. Through sheer force of evolution' it's not trying to be 14 or WoW, and has become the ultimate "drop in/drop out mmo" because there's nothing else that still exists as as player friendly like it. Disappointing for some, but great for others. We all have things we'd want. I personally would love more frequent, meaningful balance patches. But that's not the Timeline we're on. And ultimately I don't think that would be as good for the longevity of the game as, say, if that dev $ went to adding newer hats to the Gem Store as tragic as that is. Gotta find a balance as it were, which I think(hope) they're doing better now.

7:30 | As you know, I work in marketing IRL so when ANet first announced SotO, I was able to cheat a little bit and peer behind the curtain b/c I knew the games industry was moving away from RNG/Loot Boxes to make $ to Battle Passes and I called SotO for what I was: "A Battle Pass but an Actually *Good* one that the rest of the industry should follow. Still, the amount of backlash I got for this was staggering.
I'm glad people are getting more on-board with this idea now tho. The Game's Industry is tumultuous and unpredictable. Job security basically doesn't exist. And I still maintain that if $25 Battle Passes mean we get hard dates for content drops and balance releases instead of vague "Oh maybe sometime in the future probably" I'm all for it. The sad thing for people in poor countries (like me) is that ANet doesnt really localize their prices. So a 25 dollar "expansion" is literally 130 bucks for me, and ive heard its even WORSE in other countries. Even If it goes on a sale for 20% its still 94 bucks for me and thats more than some AAA games i can buy on steam. I'm a relatively new player (just hit 200 hours) and dont know much about the wizard's vault, so the next part is just some of my baseless worries.
Since i cant afford to drop 100+ bucks every time a new expansion release, the other tab of the wizards vault with cosmetics wont ever be a thing for me, same for the legendary weapon sets. IF these things eventually come back to the other tab then i dont mind waiting a few months...
... BUT what if they arent coming back? What if i get Janthir Wilds later on and the rewards are already gone, can i never get them? Cause if i cant then this feels pretty shitty, specially when one of the major things people told me about this game was that i can play casually and that the game doesnt rush me, so facing this FOMO thing all of a sudden feels very shit.
Yes, ultimately some of these things are just cosmetics, but it doesnt make the feeling any less shitty to not get a cool skin because i didnt pay MORE for a mini expansion than i paid for Monster Hunter World at full price. I'd also really love to craft Legendaries after i get my account set on other PVE content and i heard these sets help TREMENDOUSLY, so its a big turn off to be left out of that as well.
I'm still in love with this game deeply and plan on buys SOTO next cause i really liked some of the new weapons for professions (Sword necromancer looks amazing and i main Reaper) + getting the Skycale is kinda fun and easier in that as well, these are just some minor things that still weight on my mind from time to time.

100% true. The Wizard’s Vault says it all. These “expansions” follow a battle pass model. Though I think it's hard for people who have played GW2 through the years. I just hit my 10 year mark and as a player of the game for that long, I've always felt that A-Net never quite found their footing with GW2. Things were always changing and uncertain, different management that had different visions of what GW2 should be has made the game quite messy. So I think there is a degree of contempt with long time players. Like honestly to be a player during the PoF era, this really feels underwhelming, it's difficult to come back from that. Plus the company has felt like it's been on catch up since EoD. The story's really dipped for me, the quality has also, I don't know everything just feels rushed. You go back to some of the old maps they're so fun to explore I still find things to this day, but these new maps just feel so sparse and empty.

I totally agree with that point. Making a new 9 professions when about a 1/3 are almost a relic of the past with no purpose for near future or reworking some unpopular features would not bring a mass of new players to develope the game. But a battlepass a goodish way to keep players around casualy do daily/weekly and put a little efford into new and older grinds. I mean the game got some huge sinks of gold on leggys and skins and also a good variety of farms like gold+currencies, gold+titles and gold+achives. Also reintrodusing older materials for new sinks fills like a nice way to make some older farms great again.

You wanna know how casual GW2 used to be? I didn't play any story past HoT. I would just login to obtain ownership of latest living world and login rewards, maybe do dailies or a meta, then logoff to play my other games. Now the yearly expansion payment model with wizard vault battle pass that has a timer ticking down to both purchase and play all the content to unlock the currency needed for the rewards, else you'll be forever behind with inflated costs and missed gold that used to be login rewards. This is actually a big difference that forces players to spend and play the game more often. Players will have to decide to commit to GW2 or not, forcing the hard choice to engage or quit.

tbh it didn't change my experience with the game one bit, (besides a minor issue), I've been playing since around path of fire launch, and I usually play about twice a year for a couple of months, with that schedule I managed to build up a couple of characters, be up to date with the story, make some leggies and in general enjoy pretty much anything the game has to offer, and I don't feel I missed out on anything when SotO launched. I still haven't bought SotO nor JW and I don't plan on buying them anytime soon since I'm poor and can't spend money on games. The only thing that actually changed for my experience is the using weapons with every character thing, which changed a lot of builds for raiding, so now my build with almost every character is suboptimal just because I can't throw money at the game, which is arguably a more insidious problem than having to commit to playing more often, you know?

if you compare it to PoF and HoT sure, not the same, but I would still call them Expansions, they literally add new content and features to the game, they "expand" the game. My issue is with the patches they feel disconnected from the initial release, which is not a good thing. If I play the expansion a year later after all the patches are out, then my experience should be the same as HoT and PoF, one big coherent experience.
Now if we are talking about the amount of new stuff (number of maps, how long is the story, instanced content etc) I don't think it needs much explanation, the team working on gw2 now is not the same back then, same as the resources. Logically they cannot make the same amount of content.

I disagree with this assessement. I can understand why the wizards vault looks like a battlepass because sure technically it is of sorts. With quality of life improvements such as get the best reward first if thats what you want but true it is fundamentally a battle pass system. However the Wizards vault is not all the expansions provide. No Battlepass includes a housing system. None Includes new zones, new skills, new quests etc...
Are the new expansions the same scope of old expansions. No, of course not but thats why Anet refers to them as mini expansions. And its not just a question of naming. the Big expanions took years to make. Not only did they take years to make but in case of heart of thorns there was a huge content draught after release as in all likehood HoT was all hands on deck and any subsequent content had to start from scratch.
Than you need to factor in layoffs which more then likely reduced the team size working on Gw2. Not to mention potentially some of the team might have been moved to work on the new project. Smaller team, which only has one half to one third the time to work on an expansion as previous expansions team had cannot realistically be expected to put out content with same scope and size. It more fair to compare 2 mini expansions with the old expansions.
Its fair to say scope has been reduced because it clearly has even comparing 2 mini expansions with 1 old expansion but I dont feel its fair to say all Anet is doing now is issueing yearly battle passes. Clearly they're still doing a lot more than that.

I was responding to the topic and I think pointing out that I don't own SotO and JW gives perspective. I pointed out that EoD's story made me check out and now I no longer trust the writing for the game (of course it's subjective), because if I take the story/plot out of the equation for the new xpacs, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be excited about. Homestead? Maybe? Raids? If I was in the mood for raids, I think FFXIV. At the moment, the only thing enticing me is more optimal builds, but that's not a huge problem either.

I've played, and still play, games that have a paid version and a free version of the battle pass, and that's what GW2 feels like right now. I still love this game and I want it to survive and grow, but I know that is just wishful thinking. The current management doesn’t have the resources or vision to make big changes to GW2, and it’s more likely that the game will slowly die, unless they get a new owner of the IP who has the capital to make a huge investment in the next step of GW2’s evolution. I don’t know if that would be a move to a more modern game engine, or a completely new game (GW3).

Weirdly perhaps, your video makes me feel a little vindicated for all the flack I got on the forums for agreeing with this new model being just a battle pass when they announced SotO... but we live in the age of meta-marketing - everything is narrative and discourse really - substance and "content" are relativized to a corner so remote and so dark, nobody remembers to think about it anymore, or almost nobody.
Also - and incidentally - your voice fits the topic of the video very well. It gave it an intangibly valuable tone of decadence and disillusion.

This update is very light and I'm surprised not a lot of people are talking about it. I get that there are things like story, leggy spear, relics, some achievements etc but actual things to engage in for replayability? Realistically it's just a raid and convergence for 3 months. To me it's as light of an update as the inner nayos hector update, even if the quality is slightly better. I want more gw2 but it doesn't seem like the game is going to get much content. You are right it's just a battlepass. If the update doesn't have things you want to do, it's basically skippable, which was a problem with Soto as well. A lot of it was centered around the obsidian armor, the convergence, the rift hunts. If you don't care for the armor, there aren't a lot of incentives to do the activities deisgned to reward components for them. For JW and SotO to be open world focused, they sure don't feel like it. The upcoming stuff is just raid and convergence, but harder. What hurts this update the most is not having a new map. I'm convinced there simply isn't enough content to split between the launch and 3 updates. It'd probably be better if they split the expac into 3 parts in total instead of 4. So 4 months in between updates but it will feel like we've got more to do? Idk tbh. At this point they have to be working on something else because with the quantity and quality being so low, it feels like they really are working with a skeleton crew.

@ For Core, PoF and HoT I unreservedly agree. EoD was also okay (tho I have never been back to the Delve after doing the story). IBS gets a pass for only the first half being good - there were external reasons why the second half was Strikes daisy chained together pretending to be the story. But since the decision to change how they are releasing content the ‘entertainment’ quality and value has dropped off a cliff.
I am not saying that my opinion is universal truth and all must bow in agreement but I stand by what I said. Either quality and quantity goes up or my money stays in my pocket.

I don’t speak with as much weight as die-hard fans, I hopped on late and played everything in the elder dragon saga after the fact (but before SoTo). I think it is unreasonable to expect the peaks of prime
development this late into the game’s cycle. Also, battle pass is a bit harsh. I only say this because other games have such a dearth of REAL content in their battle pass that it seems unfair. I don’t think it’s a bad value for what you get considering a dollar doesn’t go as far as it used to and how predatory other systems are. The game will be better as soon as you can pay a larger dev team to do it which just isn’t realistic.

    • @traveling.down.the.road56

@@Skyace13 Well said! The expectations of some players are unrealistic and uninformed. Unless GW2 gains more players, it’s highly unlikely that they will be adding more developers to increase the amount and quality of content that will be added to the game. GW2 is still a great game, when you look at it as a whole with all of the expansions and Living World chapters (Icebrood Saga too), but most players have a “what have you done lately” mindset, and they just aren’t realistic about Anet’s resources and capabilities at this point in time.

  • @michram
    @michram Місяць тому +4

Well, in two years we got 5 (if you count Mount Balrior 6 maps), many masteries that help the progression or expand travelling options and a lot of content. There is a lot of new music, well animated cinematics, long-term goals to go for, and they try do to something interesting to the game to keep it fresh.
If you combine SOTO and Janthir Wilds (the time they spent to work on them), it's pretty close to what time they needed to release one big expansion (PoF and EoD).
The impatient people will not enjoy this model, because the full "mini"expansion feels really good once everything is added with the last patch. For example SOTO feels so much better and interesting now, because it's much easier to farm materials for long term goals.
The biggest let down I have with both SOTO and JW is the continuation of the story, which is lacking especially after the initial launch. Just like in SOTO there are basically no cinematics in the following patches, the story feels shallow and a lot of things don't make sense. I wish they would return to this more HoT-launch trailer type of cinematics that give more background to the characters, that would be used as a tool for flashbacks, like that cinematic with Rytlock and Balthazar or Glint's Legacy explanation back in PoF.
There are no CGI trailers anymore too - last time we had one was for EoD. I have always enjoyed the cinematics of GW2, and there are many memorable ones like Omadd's Machine cinematic or Pale Tree's Vision one... I am just very disappointed in that ANET doesn't invest in cinematic team, and instead is putting the resources for dialogues and voice-acting.
I have always enjoyed the story of GW2 more when I could just look at that 2-3 minute long cinematic without any dialogue, just pure artistry, and it is heavily lacking in both SOTO and JW - that's the only thing I truly hate how the story-telling approach changed completely after End of Dragons.

When facing that and comparing it to GW2 system, where you can get EVERY skin, emote or novelty by just playing game and if you might be late to get those - moving them to special tab that allows you to get them by slightly more of non paid in-game currency, that aren't making you better than others in any way - I don't understand why are you so stubborn to call expansions as "battle pass". I 100% agree, Soto and JW are more of a battle passes with an "expansion" title covering it. Is that bad, maybe compared to the HOT and POF era of expansion plus LW seasons. The content is just not there I can easily play a few hours a week and get everything from the WV and have enough to slam 1300 AA at the start of the next update. It frees me up to play other games or more importantly focus on my RL. The only thing I want more of, outside of content cause we know we won't be getting more than we are already getting, is build variety. I want them to say F it to balance in PvE and give us cool stuff. I want to spend time looking at skills and abilities and come up with new builds, and not be so focused on what's the most optimal.

As much as I found the conclusion of the dragon saga disappointing, I still prefer End of Dragons to the borefest of Secrets of the Obscure. I mean, ffs, they had the concept of fractals from other timelines to explore and they SIDELINED it immediately after the first map??? why. It was such a good concept, they could have brought back joko or some other villain that died that way! It would have been cool to see villains from fractal timelines where they succeeded.

There's some sensationalism in your video. The new expansions are designed around the battle pass model, likely to encourage player retention, but they are not strictly battle passes. Maybe you're trying to make a clear point but it kind of muddles the overall message. A person can technically play through the new releases and never engage with the wizards vault. It just wouldn't be efficient or as profitable for their account. I agree that comparing classic expansions with current ones is discouraging and disappointing.

Yea you are right its battle pass and i think its battle pass with more benefits than any other, imo gw2 is not very challenging and its not trying to be that, you have so many different modes, like for ex if i compare this to d2 battle passes and man where do i start if i remember last time i had to play that game as a job to hit power level so that i can damage mobs in mission like really damage if you below power level it says "immune" which was later changed but do i want a game to play for fun or play as job. Ultimately gw2 is causal and its good in that perspective and dont get me wrong there is content for hard stuff just that now most of the people are getting used to it and it have started lackluster now once you get all the stuff and whatnot in the game, i left genshin for this as i was gated by content, but it was me burning all that in a week and then what's next 30 mins of daily gameplay which made me think if i play game like this than maybe in the near future i might not able to play game that need more time to do stuff, and there is FOMO..... well every game has that content and i am glad that gw2 content don't have that at least for now (excluding BL gemstore which i dont find annoying i am not the target for it). So currently i think the speed matter whatever they will chose i think it will be always be slow as it needs time to make content and if its lackluster it will hit game hard and them, at least with current dlcs....battlepasses they have a insight to make changes to stuff to be adjust for future references. We just ought to burn content with lighting speed and move on that what we have started to do, i even see less meta on new maps compared to old ones and they have to adjust the soto currency with portable exchange otherwise meta of soto and janthir might be dead after few months if its not profitable..... well we still have everything else in the game, we the players are now so optimized that we made data sheets to find better ways to deal the meta is very streamlined path to hit most and get most of it.... while the new player without any data or understand will have to spent ages to understand the same stuff and reach us if there is no one to help them.

Excluding the Story the game itself has become better, but too little too late in my opninion. The fundamental issue of GW2 is, that it never got a cleanup/overhaul patch, to get rid of legacy stuff no one engages with anymore, but stil is presented as important to new players for some reason.... but the engine is so bad it wont allow it without destroying other things. To me GW2 feels like the house of a horter. Anet should have stopped at the end of season 4 and went on to making GW3...

I'll be honest, I don't hate the mini expansions as much as most people do. But that is largely do to how much EoD damaged my enjoyment of the franchise, simply put we are zooming forward in the historic period at an absurd pace. Note that doesn't mean literally, it's the feel of the period.
EoD we begin with the jade tech, power plants, words like bigot (applicable, just not period appropriate.) SoTo was a wet far, some nice system reworks but that's about it. Then in JW we are literally doing model UN and the people are using words like "fuller" to mean more full. I at least appreciate the aesthetic of JW returning to form, and even Soto at least being fantasy rather than futuristic. To put that more coherently: the dialogue and aesthetics do not feel appropriate, to what was portrayed previously.
I enjoy playing the game, but I can't say the game engages me anymore. And there isn't a chance in hell I'll play GW3 if its even a year further in the timeline, which it will have to be.

Saying you arent interested in the upcoming content and are going to play casually is fair, but our personal enjoyment of a content doesnt change what is on offer.

IT is absolutely fair. What? These "expansions" have less content then bloody battle passes in other games, are a YEAR long instead of months like every other game with a battle pass. They are literally drip feeding content slower then bloody WoW does, thats insane. Every model they have is essentially a battle pass in everything but name at this point, to try and milk money from players - specifically whales.
There is next to no content, updates are snails pace..... I do not know how you do not see this as a battle pass, truly.

In your opinion, does the content cadence, volume, price point, and reward structure of these mini-expansion have any similarity to how a battlepass manifests itself in other MMORPGs?

All of the things that you said plus some cosmetics are way to gae and class balance is SHIT.

You stating that the new xpacs are simply no xpacs at all to me is just a slap in the face of any Anet developer that puts hours and hours into developing Gw2. I am not saying you should not critize the xpacs, you should (!), but you are nullifying the honest work Anet devs put into these xpacs by making such insane statements... . SotO and JW are what the current dev team calls expansions and you should at least accept that.

      How bout no.
SOTO was the devs ripping our 6th piece rune bonus away from us and selling it back to us via relics. Not only that, but a legendary relic is the first legendary that is not future proof. Nope, gotta buy later expansions to get the new relic bonuses. And don’t get me started on the quality *and* quantity of SOTO’s campaign, or which classes got the short end of the weapon master stick.
I don’t care what they call it. It’s overpriced, pay-to-win garbage.

@Royal.Grand.Majesty i don't have an opinion on ff14 because I don't pay subscription fees for games. JRPGs can be fun though I've played a little bit of Granblue Fantasy and it was pretty good.
