This album is so important
As a trans person I've always appreciated this album for how it expresses dysphoria and kind of embraces the stupid simplicity and cleanliness of pop and how it relates to transfem people who feel the way they feel
you will never be a real woman
@@SPACEDOUT19 ok why make someone feel worse when they already have it hard
@@SPACEDOUT19 whats your problem bro
I haven't listened to this album since SOPHIE passed away. As someone who was absolutely floored by her music videos and her artistic vision, her death hit me pretty hard. Such a young, incredible talent taken so soon. I was too afraid that the first song would drive me to tears.
Take all the time you need between uploads, Myke! This is coming from a guy with a YT channel that has no schedule who just uploads on gut feeling alone. So... it's ok, man. There is a precedent for not uploading often (just look at Bill Wurtz for example--he uploaded his first song in 2 years this past January and it did very well views-wise).
An extremely influential and important album, most hyperpop artists list SOPHIE as a huge influence.
Also as a trans woman I feel many of the songs on the album definitely are about the trans experience, talking about how freeing and beautiful it can be, but also all the hardships that come with it. I came away with the same interpretation of infatuation, not okay, and pretending. Those songs pack such an emotional punch for me.
It's a masterpiece to me. It's an emotional, uplifting, and highly positive expression of Sophie's experience told in truly forward-thinking electronic production and arrangements.
I’m glad you could still enjoy the themes of trans identity even though you weren’t crazy about the record. I think it’s possibly the most important album about the trans experience of the pst few years, or at least the most visible and acclaimed. I’ve always felt that Sophie’s playing with timbres in her sound also played into the idea of the narrative.
Btw I’ve always found that Faceshopping was about shopping around for new aspects of your physical appearance that suits your identity post-transition, even in regards to facial surgery that could make one look more conventionally feminine. Especially when the lyric “My shop is the face I front, I’m real when I shop my face.” hits. I’ve always found it likening changing your appearance to “photoshopping” but not in a negative way.
the title being pronounced 'I love every persons insides' really made me think deeper on the ideas of the album. I prefer Sophies older more aggressive music but this is truly a special album
-NB fan!
a modern classic
Myke rocking the awesome Strawberry Switchblade shirt
This album is so fucking meaningful to me, it honestly is my favourite. Seeing your outside perspective on it was pretty cool.
I like your observations of the songs being not about writing to someone else, but instead how you perceive yourself. That definitely comes up in Faceshopping, and even ponyboy (which is mostly a very horny song about ponyplay)
Myke you're constantly putting out content, whether that be with DEHH,FPS, or ITMSO to the point where it is hard to keep up lol. Please cut yourself some slack, you already do more than enough. Great review btw
Myke C Town I hope you are having a wonderful day
One of my favorite albums of the last decade, personally, and maybe one of the best one-album wonders of all time. RIP SOPHIE
Oh, and “Is It Cold in the Water?” is just one of the most gorgeous things out there.
Sophie was such a talent at the elektron boxes, those synth tones are absolutely brutal
happy you’re back Myke! also stoked you’ve given this a review, one of my all time favourites. It was a rough start to 2021 with the news of MF DOOM’s passing, then just a month later SOPHIE too. going back to this album it gives a fair bit of heartache but there’s also comfort in it. Immaterial is a track that has lyrically affected me more now that she’s gone. gives the impression she’s still here. day by day, life after life, immaterial girl 🙏💚
"I think you sometimes forget I would know you best."
I do believe "It's Okay To Cry" is her talking to her little egg self from the past.
Either way, I can't listen to this album without crying, lol.
The heavily pitch-shifted passage in “Immaterial” reads the same way
“I was just a lonely girl in the eyes of my inner child”
hell yeah myke! it's crazy to me that there are people out there who dont get absolutely demolished by faceshopping/ponyboy because that shit is HARD but regardless it's awesome that you reviewed this and enjoyed some of it it seems! i adore sophie and like others havent listened since she passed. gonna rectify that now. oh, and you mentioned this at the top, but it's worth listening to some of the shit she produced for rappers, it might not be your vibe but both "SAMO" and "Yeah Right" off Big Fish Theory are produced by her and 2 of my favorite Vince tracks. there will never be another sophie and while it's fucking tragic that (and how) she passed, it's incredible to see how much of a legacy she has left with, comparatively, not a ton of music. (as in her discography, i know she was always collaborating). anyway man take all the time you need! it's your channel, it's the holidays, blah blah blah lol. much love from chicago!
I'm trans and I felt your analysis was spot on. I didn't know her either but I can almost guarantee that you are correct when you said that part of the reason the album is so sonically eclectic is because of dysphoria itself and what breakthroughs have to be experienced mentally to overcome it. If you were a fan of the Psychic TV vibes in Whole New World I would recommend the remix album for this. It's basically unrecognizable from the original album and there's much more experimentation with it overall.
You’re fine bro, we understand. No need to feel bad about lack of content we’ll live
As a trans woman myself I really appreciate your nuanced and thoughtful comments all over this record. Great video
Thanks Myke :D great review
hi goat, glad to see you’re back ! 🙏🏻
Bro I love this album, so much fun to listen to
Your expectations about her going in are correct for the most past. This album is a departure for everything she has ever made before. It’s the first time I remember the she as an artist was present in the music instead of her production.
Great pick, one of my top favorite albums in the recent years
OH SHIT. I love this album, just heard it a few months back and got obsessed. Excited to watch!
Love seeing your vids! You introduced me to panopticon way back when Kentucky came out.
now i’m curious as to what you’d think of charli xcx’s vroom vroom ep, since sophie produced that along with much of her other music
The metallic drums on faceshopping are so mean, it's like someone slams your head against an garage gate or some shit. And Whole New World is like an cyberpunk anthem, repetitive and kinda numbing and then the ethereal climax. Very interesting project for me.
Didn't know of the album, definitely gonna listen now!
I like the album, but I knew her from those early, “techno” days, where the singles she released on Numbers were some of my favorite dance tracks coming out at the time, so I was not as enamored with it at first. It’s grown on me to the point I see it as an essential album from the 2010’s, but to this day, if someone was to ask me, “what’s a Sophie track I should check out”, I’m gonna rec “Bipp”, “Lemonade”, “Msmsmsm”, unless I know they HATE electronic/dance music… That’s just me though bc that’s the stuff that first made me love their work.
I remember hearing that shit and feeling like I felt as an early 20something first encountering Rustie’s mix of “Spliff Dub”, which was pretty much my intro to dubstep, along with Skream, Benga, Joker, etc… No, I’m not saying Sophie’s a dubstep artist, but it’s got that post-dubstep DNA, and anyway, that’s my opinion. ✌️🤘♾
R.I.P SOPHIE
Wow.. I really had no idea that Sophie passed this year. Where have I been I feel so terrible.
I discovered her through the production she did for Let's Eat Grandma a couple years ago, didn't find out until now that she produced SAMO for Vince Staples, my favorite song on Big Fish Theory. Man
RIP Sophie 🙏
Great review - I feel much the same as you regarding this album and Sophie in general. I saw Sophie live at a festival in 2019 which was a pretty great experience, though.
i enjoy hearing your thoughts on music, love the vids.
For a lot of people all they have to say about this album is that it is influential and that a lot of subsequent hyperpop is influenced by this album. This album is amazing not even considering its influence after its release. The production is immaculate, very amazing textures and effects. The vocal manipulations compliment the songs perfectly as well. The lyrics are super emotionally intense and the imagery they present is super vivid. I love this album.
R u gonna end up doing the black parade, interested to see your thoughts on it as u somewhat enjoyed three cheers and I personally think the black parade is far better, tho it has slightly pop-ier sensibilities which u may not appreciate
Rest In Peace
She left us way too soon
Yall should recommend him more electronic albums
Cried so hard when she died. Loved hearing your perspective on it!
Strawberry Switchblade! Myke is based as fuck
i think this album is incredible - i remember how blown away i was when i listened to it the first time.
awesome strawberry switchblade shirt
im so glad you finally checked out this album but im still disappointed you couldn't get into the more aggressive songs :(
Mike, I'm sure you heard about it already but check out that new Aesop Rock album with Blockhead.. I think its his best since like Impossible Kid.
Masterpiece
Pony... boy... badass beat intensifies.

Party pop, party pop
Party pop, party pop
I knew you wouldn't like the "heavy" side of the album but didn't know how about the contemplative ambient. Glad that you at least appreciated some of the elements and tried to keep your commentary respectful to Sophie
Can you do Arca
Best album of 2018.
Incredible album
Hey Myke, you checked out the new Kaatayra yet?
no worries about irregular uploads. there's a reason a bell exists lol
SHOUT OUT r/SOPHIE FOR THIS ONE
OMG YES
Immaterial one of the best songs of all time.
Dope album!
Wish I loved this album more, I love the aesthetic and the production but I hate the singing :( Great video !
THANK U SM FOR ACKNOWLEDGING NOT EVERYTHING FROM A TRANS ARTIST HAS TO BE ABOUT BEING TRANS
Do Corbin - mourn
This is one of those albums I’ve always planned on listening to but still never have
It’s only about 40 minutes. If you got time today you should check it out.
Welp it might be a week later, but I’m finally gonna listen to this after years of meaning to lol
@Diego Cruz it was really good, normally I don’t give opinions after one listen because it’s only one listen but I really like it and I assume I’m going to like it ever more with more listens. I definitely should’ve listened sooner.
Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red plsss
So I just watched the 100 gecs review for the first time a few minutes ago. Obviously you didn't like it. Now, 2 years later I wonder if you will appreciate an album that heavily inspired that gecs album.
Edit: alright, just finished. I just wanna say that I get it. Honestly, a lot of what they call "hyper pop" is an acquired taste. I love that these kids are getting weird with their mixes and song structures. But I'll admit it took me a while for it to sink in. And I'm ok with it being a niche thing. So it's unsurprising you didn't like either album. All good, atleast you tried. Next up: Dorian Electra. Haha.
UUuwhy yuh revuuuin this yudownt evn nowho it is blp blp blerp blerp blip blip bleh....
RIP GARED O’DONNELL ✊🏿🥺
This album accompanied me on my own journey toward coming out as a transfemme nonbinary person!
Not Okay is the incessant nagging in one's head, anxiety, that's why it sounds so repetitive, off-putting, with squelchy bass exploding here and there. Also, I'm amazed that you got the story right at first listen.
You might have gotten the meaning of faceshopping wrong in my opinion, i think it’s ironic in meaning and a critique of superficiality although i might be wrong
First
Don’t like the album as a whole but it’s got some bangers on it. Wanted to see where she would go after this
I personally hate most edm or techno music but I can understand ppl liking this
