Tarzan (Lord Greystoke), already well educated and fed up with civilization, returns to the jungle and, more-or-less assisted by chimpanzee Cheetah and orphan boy Jai, wages war against poachers and other bad guys.
Tarzan is a series that aired on NBC from 1966 - 1968. The series portrayed Tarzan (played by Ron Ely) as a well-educated character that had grown tired of civilization, and returned to the jungle where he had been raised.
The show retained many of the trappings of the classic movie series, including Cheeta, while excluding other elements, such as Jane, as part of the "new look" for the fabled apeman that producer Sy Weintraub had introduced in previous motion pictures starring Gordon Scott, Jock Mahoney, and Mike Henry. CBS aired repeat episodes the program during the summer of 1969.

Ron Ely really did wrestle with that lion. The Director who told him to do it must have been crazy!
Filmed in Brazil and not Africa.
A great children's TV series. Happy memories of more innocent times.

@@brontewcat I saw an interview with Ron Ely where he explained that during a dive from the top of the waterfall, he parted company with his loincloth.
That's not an outtake that I have ever seen on TV!
There are so many great series that just don't get broadcast anymore.
I guess it's that they are not considered to be politically correct enough.

Totally can't imagine what was going through their heads having a Tarzan with no Jane. It's like they were trying to do Batman in a loin cloth without any Catwoman and to make it even creepier made Robin into a little kid walking around in a loin cloth. As much as I loved the Edgar Rice Burroughs and Johnny Weismeuller Tarzans, the Ron Ely version honestly just had no appeal to me at all. The writers seemed to have never actually read any of the original Tarzan stories and instead of all that crazy science fiction stuff about lost civilizations or dinosaurs this show was more like "Daktari" than Tarzan. I kept expecting Tarzan to wrestle Clarence the Cross Eyed Lion. I'm really surprised it even had a 2nd season. Name any memorable story in the whole two years it was on. Show us any episode fans have a video posted on you tube about. The whole series was just blander than a trip to the zoo.

So good growing up as a kid back through the 70's and 80's. There were some great shows on tv back then for boys. They get nothing like that today. The, masculine, heterosexual, male, moral hero is seen as the devil in todays woke, neofeminist, cultural marxist society. There are no heroic role models for young boys to aspire to today.

I used to watch this every Saturday morning (in the UK) in the mid-1970s when I was 9 or 10. Then I would go to the nearby wasteground and pretend I was an African tribesman!

As far as I can tell this Tarzan TV series (1966 - 2 seasons) is
available NOWHERE, not for streaming, not for torrenting or any
downloads anywhere. It has fallen off the face of the earth except for
descriptions on Wiki. Searching for videos only brings up a million
"other" Tarzans. Anyone able to revive this production? It was on NBC
    & quite good family viewring.

I remember in my neighborhood all the kids were using TARZANS call...laughing here thinking about it...some even beating their chest as they were calling out.

One thing the series never explained was where did Jai come from? He is clearly of Mexican or Central American descent but there was never any mention as to how he ended up being orphaned in Africa and into the custody and protection of Tarzan. If anyone can shine a light onto his backstory, you'd be answering a question I've been asking since the early 1970s.
