Thanks for the thumbs up for all the Colorado Trail Foundation volunteers (like me 🙂) who’ve kept the trail in good shape! We have fun so you can have fun on the CT. BTW, visited that old cabin you checked out when I was on a 2011 trail crew in that area. Really enjoyed this video.
Where is that? I'd love to visit that section of trail!
I have been there and camped. It was very fun. I recommend going there if you love the outdoors!
0 dislikes! Great stuff! Gotta love Colorado!
lol the lone little conifer at 10:41 is so cute!
Ahhhh. So good to see you back out on trail. The Colorado outdoor scenery is so refreshing. I feel like I’ve been out on another great hike.
Right? I really appreciate the lack of background music so we can hear the wind through the trees and the rush of river and creek water. Thanks for bringing us along, Joe!
The bird's nest made me think of a sapsucker's nest I came across when I first got into birding.Nice hike .
Yeah! Really like the music and editing. Looking forward to more vlogs!
End to end really enjoyable. I wondered what that bird was in the hollowed out tree. It was very low to the ground as was your tarp set up. I like ground dwelling. It was good to hear that you bag was toasty. Set you up the day in the high tops. Beautiful up there - great hike. All the best. Mark
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. That must have been a hungry bird!
Pleasure mate. Yes hungry for life!
im pleasantly surprised
Thanks for putting this together. I loved the scenery, the detail shots, & staring up at the trees. Gorgeous! I liked the retro video footage at the beginning - fun!
Yeah, I had a Gregory too for a couple years & I had no idea why either. I will say that puppy was SUPER-durable. I put it in the wash on a regular cycle dozens of times & then would let it air-dry. Eventually all the plastic clips got brittle & started breaking. I thru-hiked the 442-mile Natchez Trace with it. I don't know if I'll ever buy another Gregory again but if it were free I'd definitely take it! It wasn't a gear-snob's pack & it wouldn't have been my pack of choice to live out of for months at a time, but it got the job done.
Well done !
Luv It🌎🏝️
The mail truck goes backwards at 0:37...strangeness!!!!
Haha, I was wondering if anyone would spot it. Nice eye!
One of these days, I wouldn't be surprised if I ran into you on the tail... Since we're both here in the Centennial State.
Great stuff. Love the videos man.
Thanks, maybe I'll see you out there!
Love the retro flava of that intro!
Missed this as much as you, bud.
Another awesome video, thanks for sharing with us.
Cool video. 40oz for a pack may not make it as light as the favorite UL packs, but I think it still gives plenty of room to pack out a UL base weight.
No idea how Gregory will stack up in UL territory, but I do love my Baltoro 75 for those trips when going light isn't an option. When I've got to carry 50 or more pounds, the Baltoro's suspension makes it about as comfortable as that much weight is ever going to be, and the pack is pretty bomb-proof. So when it comes to expedition hiking, I think Gregory is very solid.
Great video Joe ,good to see you go solo again . liked the camp setup
Huge Fan. appreciate the production value in your videos a bunch. In relation to this trip though, how did you store your food? Did you hang it? sleep with it? See, my plans are to hit up the collegiate loop this september and could use some advice on food storage need out there.
Wow...I thought that Pikes Peak was the tallest peak in Colorado, and I just found out that it is number 20!
We have 53 peaks over 14,000' ! It's kind of crazy.
Wow...I live in Florida, and our highest elevation is 345 feet, and that point is just two miles south of the Alabama border!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britton_Hill
Most of us live at sea level to less than 20 feet in elevation.
We do have lots of high rise hotels and condominiums however! LOL
I was able to summit Pikes Peak many years ago.
Yessssss great to see you back!
That was really good! You've come along way. The quality and editing is great. Good to see the DIY quilt in action. So......how was the Gregory pack, missing the crown 2?
It was good, but ultimately probably not for me. We'll see. I didn't like the way the trampoline frame only touched parts of my back. If I had to make the call now it'd definitely be the crown 2 for me.
Love the 80s’ vibe in the beginning
loved it joe!!!! keep them coming!!
recognized Leadville. a good friend lives a block from melanzanos (sp) rain is keeping me in ks as I type this. :/ riding a bike up. getting amped.
Joe, Looks like a great hike. Thanks for the performance update on your DIY quilt! I'm working off of your tutorial video and building one, so it was great to hear the report! One question do you use a stuff sack or just pack it into your backpack? Thanks again and keep doin' what your doin'
I just free stuff it into my backpack (which is lined with a trash compactor bag.) This creates a stable base for the rest of my gear, all of which helps compress the quilt as well. Win win!
I see you have a Peak Design Capture on your pack strap. As a "photographer" I have multiple, and keep one on my day pack strap. Sometimes the camera is super easy to get in and out, and other times I want to toss it in the river. But it's handy to carry my heave camera out of the way. Also accidentally discovered that the orange release button rotates to a lock position. It somehow got turned and was one of my issues, but still ....
I've become a huge fan of it! It helped me to lube mine up a bit. I used chapstick (that was all I had) but I'd bet an oil would be better. It's just so nice to have my camera ready to shoot without having to go through 5 steps to get it out and ready. I do agree though, it could be a little smoother.
I worry about oils in such mechanisms. It's like you shouldn't spray or use oils in locks because they attract and hold dirt and grime. Instead, graphite powder is the better choice. But again, I worry about anything near my lenses. But graphite would be my first choice. The capture is my second favorite product. The clutch is my favorite because I don't like straps. I guess it's a combo of the two. I have a lot of their stuff including the shell (rain hoods), but never have really used them.
Hey Joe, very nice vlog! I was wondering what map(s) you are using for the loop? I've hiked Elbert, but I'd love to make this hike as well. Peace.
Why did you never think you would be hiking with a Gregory pack?
Nice trip! You know hiking is like Jell-O, there's always room for more Jell-O and hikes, "So sayeth the the peanut gallery!".
P.S. That music you got there at the end Joe, is kinda 1970's "porn-ee". Don't ask how I know 😮... Boom chicka chicka booom, but I digress.
P.S.S. Was that a quick beaver shot in the scrubby meadow or just a furry rodent? Damn, thinking about boom chicka booom I guess.
That was a marmot! It was a sneaky one though haha.
That was a cool mapping vlog you used. What program is that? I was diggn the terrain showing your path. And I enjoyed your video!
That was just Google Earth Pro. It's free and I upload my GPS files from my hike into it to display them on a good looking map.
Joe
Gotta ask a dumb question. In the summer why do you wear shorts with what appears to be a base layer to hike in as opposed to convert able pants? In the summer I hike with running shorts and in the winter I use pants. Also how are those Costco carbon poles holding up? Thanks
In the summer I really only wear shorts while hiking, almost never pants. I brought the baselayer this time because I wasn't sure how cold it'd get at night. I only really wear my base layer to bed and around camp at night, but this time I definitely could have gone without it. The Costco poles are still incredible! I'm completely sold on them.
@@BackcountryBanter thank you for your quick reply. I have seen others do this and was wondering about this. Thank you for the reply about the poles as well. I learn from others, as well as enjoy your videos. Thank you!!
Did you do the whole Collegiate Peaks loop? I'm just about done editing my Collegiate West portion of my CT hike from July.
Sweet! I'll check it out. Sadly no, just a quick little weekend jaunt. I'd like to do it though.
Is there only one Collegiate Peak video? Thanks
For starters your video editing is way way better than what I know which isn’t much so take my comment with a grain of salt. I like the different angles and I appreciate all the effort in getting all the shots with you walking by the camera or stepping by it but from my viewer perspective it seems to be a bit much. Some of them in a video make a video go from good to great but it seems a bit overused almost in this video. If I could make a suggestion of getting some of those same shots but then also get some from a higher angle by putting the tripod on a sign/tree/rock or something. Or maybe even set the camera up in front of you and you walk up to it. Anyways take that how you would like, I’m not an expert by any stretch, just my opinion as a viewer. Great video as always 👍
Hey Joe, I have one hiking season to spend as I please. If you could pick between thru hiking the PCT or the "mini triple crown" (JMT, CT, and long trail), which would you pick?
PCT. There's just something different about a very long continuous hike.
Thanks! Been following your adventures for a few years now! Keep up the great content.
Hey Joe, what kind of camera/editing software do you use?
hey Joe,would this be your preferred time of the year to hike the CT? or would you go later like beginning of September or earlier towards the end of may beginning of June?
I'd go late August or September. It's a little less crowded, cooler and best of all the leaves are beginning to change. Fall in the San Juans is truly incredible. The only downside to going later in the season is the risk of snow and cooler, possibly freezing temps. Another upside is that you might miss most of the summer thunderstorms too.
Thanks would you bring an ice ax & micro spikes or just the micro spikes?
I have followed you since you did the PCT and went back from there to watch your AT hike. You are a wonderful hiker, person and filmmaker, and have provided me with inspiration and entertainment. I don't think one should be using the flag of the country providing and protecting the ground you walk on to wipe one's brow. What say you?
Thanks for the kind words. This will probably not come off well and will undoubtedly offend some, but I'll do my best. Since my loyalties lie in my personal values and beliefs, which are not dictated by where I live or the groups of people that control the power there, I have no sense of patriotism. There are many positives and negatives to all nations and to tie myself to the mast of one only serves to keep me from exploring/experiencing the others. I've found that most people in the world are pretty similar and want for the same things out of life. I'd like to see less borders, nationalism and separation and more open-mindedness and cultural understanding. While I understand and appreciate the sentiment, the flag holds no real meaning to me.
I say this. If you truly do not believe in borders, take down the fence around your yard, take the locks off of the doors to your abode, and publish your address inviting ANYBODY who wants to come over and live with you to do so. No vetting, no charges, no discrimination. Do not let your family, room-mates, or neighbors dictate to you. Next video, do not tie yourself to any particular mast and wear the flag of a different nation to use as a snot rag. Don't be political, be apolitical. Best of luck. You have lost this subscriber.
@@bloodyeyeful guy it's not an actual flag.... It's a rag with a print of the American flag. And obviously he offended you because you are very patriotic, nothing wrong with that. But for you to be so offended as to not enjoy ones video that you clearly clicked on because it's something you enjoy and share is ridiculous. That's what's truly wrong with this country, if someone doesn't share your views then they are dead to you. It's quite a shame. I myself have an American flag hanging outside my house and I do love this country no matter how divided we are. BUT I do share most of his feelings of his comment. Being closed minded is not the way to be. The world needs more compassion and acceptance (where it's needed). Yeah people get super offended over the dumbest everything, such as you. But shrug it off and enjoy life and it's many different views.
Well put AngryMan. I never click a negative on a video, and I did this time. With what you said in mind, I un-clicked it. Still, it is the flag of the country that invented National Parks and public land. It is the flag, no matter if it is on a bandana, a hat, or a tattoo. Wear it on your head, but don't blow your nose into it. Thanks for the check Angry. People need to learn to get angry without hating, and to forgive. I never hated you Joe, just didn't like the wipe...staying subscribed. What are you angry about Angrymountainman?
@@bloodyeyeful wow you have got to be the first person on the internet that actually doesn't get super angry back at someone. I commend you good sir. It's my trail name. I had a long beard and I was complaining about something on trail one time and my friend gave me that name. Seriously great comment back sir, keeping it real, I like it. Hike your own hike my friend, and stay safe out there.
