2011 BMW 528i Review - The problem is the last two numbers in its name

- The official car of ballers on a budget, the 528i is back for 2011 delivering a BMW at a price low enough to finance -- not lease. There is of course one major trade-off, and the car's badge says it all.

I have the 2012 528. It's only 0.7 seconds slower to 60 than the 535. Also mine is awd. Calling it the lowest end model is kinda a slap in the face. Lol its still a great place to sit on a road trip. I took a trip to Chicago, and with normal driving I was averaging 32 to 34 mpg. Yes it's not the 550.but I am happy with the milage.
Cfora Day I'm trying buy a BMW 2012 5 series 528i it has 96k miles only own by 1 owner I was thinking u might have any advice like any problems u been threw with yours?
Do you guys know that there is a timing chain issue with the N20 engine that BMW has tried their best to hide? Not all of them suffer but when one chain rail breaks, BMW will hand you a bill of $17k-$22k. No excuse for a company like BMW to do something like that to it's customers......
@@cnnlive10 I have had some of my friends have the n20 engine in their car and it has been great. The 2011 is different to the 2012 by the way for people that are wondering. The 2011 has a naturally aspirated 3.0 I6 where as the 2012 has a 2.0 turbo inline 4. Both push out 240 horsepower.
Is this guy seriously a secretly a Benz dealer ?
It's quite offensive comparing the F11 528i to a camry. Yes, its the 528i is bottom of the line but the power and refined quality just don't compare to anything else, and the power is more than adequate. This guy is a tool !
Yeah.. I bought a 528i with sport and Luxury package and it has the power and handling etc.. I dont kkow what has talking about.
Bilal Ahmed I agree as well. Had car for 4 yrs and never a problem with acceleration. In fact, I always thought the car was pretty aggressive speed wise. Car has been reliable, sporty and feels super luxurious even after 8 yrs old!! Love it!!
As an owner of a 2011 528i for 3 years and 120,000 km., I completely disagree with almost everything you say. This car wasn't designed for you; it was designed for me, an owner, as opposed to tester, who appreciates smoothness with good power, refinement and, most of all, value. My car has required no repair.
Go buy a 550, if you want big punch, big price and lower value.
BTW; I get 6.4 L/100/km (44 MPG imperial) over-all average.
Paul Duthie I heard that it’s actually pretty reliable for a bmw and inexpensive to repair, so I was looking to getting one, would you recommend it?
@david hernandezz I bought this 2011 F10 528i over a year ago(in 2019)and couldn't be happier. Its 2020 now and my 2011 only had 60K miles last year and was/is in almost new condition...best car I have ever owned..it has the 3.0 liter and has good power. I did buy an extended warranty just in case as this is my 1st foray into the luxury market. So I am covered to 120,000 miles.
This inline 6 cyl motor looks to be a very reliable one too. I was happy to avoid a turbo and happy to also skip the 4 cyl turbo in the later models...just seems like such a big car to asking a 4cyl motor to do the job but thats just my opinion...so I would definitely recommend getting one if you haven't already.
The 528i became a turbo 4 in 2012. Before that (this review is for 2011), it was an inline 6
In 2017 the newer 5 came with a new turbo 4 and was rebadged 530i and it's the base model for the US. For other parts of the world the base model on the G30 is a 518d with a 2.0L turbodiesel 4 and the 520i with a 1.6L turbo 4.
BMW is the best car ❤
I don't understand why so many Americans buy cars with at least 3.0 liter engine and more than 250 hp, but they are not allowed to drive more than 70 mph on the Highway. A car with such an engine starts to make fun at speeds over 100 mph. In Germany most BMW costumers buy engines with less than 200 hp and they are easily drive about 140 mph on the German Autobahn. So why do US-Costumers only buy the big 6- and 8-cly. engines that can do more than twice the top speed that is allowed on your highways?
I know, my s550 has 429hp and I can't drive it more than 65mph :(
acceleration.
Igor kotzlowski Ego my friend... Ego lol
not everyone drives on the highway dude. some people just need extra power for city passing and overtaking
(Very) cheap gas made people want more. How about the trucks ? Gas guzzlers. When it's cheap people ask for more. On the other side, Europe offers comical sized engines (on other brands, not Bmw). Surely because the gas is so expensive there.
Basic? 528i is not the lowest model, and the 0-60mph and 1/4 mile times are only slightly slower than the 535i. The engine is not a 6 cylinder, it's a 4 cylinder turbo which out preforms the previous generation 6 cylinders (2011 did come with both 2.0 turbo and 3.0 6 cylinder). The F10 BMW is one the best 5 series out in any model;. So much so that I prefer it over the newer G30 5 Series. Your description says it's cheap enough to finance - not lease, makes no sense. Any car is cheap enough to finance if you have the means. It's like saying a Lamborghini Huracan is cheap enough to finance compared to a Lamborghini Aventador.
Comparing a 5 series to a Camry based on engine output is just flat out dumb. Why not compare a Ford Mustang GT to a BMW M4 because they have similar horse power. How about a Lamborghini Aventador to a Dodge Challenger SRT because they have similar horse power.
Just got a 2011 528i with the NA straight 6 B52 motor and it's plenty powerful for everyday driving. Seems like this presenter misrepesented the car in this review. Granted, it's not an M5, but it's not slow either. And that ZF 8 speed tranny he doesn't care for is objectively one of the best gearboxes ever built. He should go back to his Camry, as he doesn't appear to know much about BMW's.
I have a 2009 528xi 230hp and it has more than enough power for daily driving , I had my share of fast cars including a C6 corvette and an Infiniti G37 . I didn't want the 535 because the turbos and fuel system can be very problematic so I bought the 528 and couldn't be happier . I don't plan on taking it to the track so who cares . If all you want is power get an M5 and enjoy filling it up with gas every day
YOU ARE 100% CORRECT
In that case I stand corrected, but still I don´t get why he is mentioning the supposed `lack of power`.
How can an American complain about the lack of power in such a car? This car lacks power in excess of 120 miles an hour, speeds which you will never reach in the USA.
to anyone considering this car, if you know a used one is in good condition, go for it! especially if it is still under warranty. my family owns this exact same model and at 100,500KM with the exception of a bad fuel pump at 70K this thing has been amazing in terms of reliability, still on the same tires from when we bought it at 64K... this thing has seen it all, launches, powerslides, tailwhips, pulls, even 2 panic stops. everything. definetly consider!
Sababa Hummus 528i? I’m looking for a 535i are they reliable as well?
I have a 2013 4 cylinder twin turbo 528i. I have had no mechanical issues at 78k miles. Ive only done the standard oil change and brake changes to it. Other than that everything is still factory stock and running great. Great car.
@@alankhodatalab4277 did you find out?
Last summer I test drove a 2016 528i xDrive and a 535i xDrive both fully optioned and with the M-spec. After a 2 hour test drive with an hour in each car I found the 4cyl was exactly what I needed in terms of performance and fuel economy even with my 20inch M-sport rims sitting on low profile run flat tires I am still provided with a smooth and swift ride . The 535i was about $16,000 more than the 528i and only had about 45 more hp which I gotta say isn't very noticeable. Here I am now with my 2016 M528i xDrive and I absolutely love every moment behind the wheel, I just hit 12,000miles 2 weeks ago and I have zero complaints. Great car and handles AMAZING in our New England winters here in Connecticut!
God save us from the power snobs.. Anyone who buys a sport sedan primarily for the stoplight races does not like driving. This is about bragging rights for 99% of drivers. This pansy reviewer will use a car to cruise to the Starbucks in suburban/urban traffic and rarely if ever floor the accelerator. I'm sick of these dorks pretending every sport sedan has to run the Nurburgring.
8 gears is what makes up for HP! 8th gear is the same as 6th in a V8 and just means the car has shorter 1,2,3rd gears to compensate for less HP and just adds more gears to maintain top end! 8 speeds is not for mileage but for performance and when you use this technique on a higher HP car you get really good acceleration!
You are right but in some countries, the 5 series is available as a long wheel base version, which adds approximately 10 inches to the rear leg room. And in some countries, the import tariff would be insanely high and thus the price of a vehicle with a big displacement engine would be rather unreasonable.
I don't think the E-class has a nicer interior, it's also noisier on the highway.
The 535d is the sweet spot, power and economy :-)
To give the people below me a heads up. The car this gentleman has been reviewed still has the 6 cilinder. As of today, BMW is basically throwing every 6 cilinder out of business if the number is below 30 (28i, 23i, 20i) except for their diesels. So expect that in the very near future, every new 528i, x3 28i, 328i etc will have BMW's new N20 4 cilinder engine. This has already been done in Europe.
It sounds a little less spectacular than the l6, but it certainly has a masculine sound.
This guy lost all his credibility when he said the interior wasn't up to par with the E-Class, I'm sorry but the F10 blows the W211's interior out of the water. 528i does 0-60 in 6.2 seconds. Not class leading but faster than C350. Regards.
It took you that long for him to lose credibility? It was only :45 seconds in when he called it "Vanilla"...and :58 seconds it to think most people could get it confused with the 7 Series...even this base 528i is anything BUT "Vanilla"...its nicely appointed in terms of features AND tech...Vanilla to me in any description is plain...or unexciting.
My 2011 528i is VERY nicely equipped...has most all of the bells and whistles that you could want. Navigation, front and rear parking sensors, paddle shifters, rear camera, electric parking brake, tachometer, heated seats, rear a/c,...couldn't be happier with my purchase a year ago in 2019.
The C350 from 2011 is a much more sporty car. I had both and there is no comparison.
In Europe you can get even less powerfull model the 520i with 2.0 litre 184PS engine and 7.9 sec 0 - 100kmh time
Can't tell if this video is a joke or what.
My god you have no freaking clue...
The 2011 528i was made with both the new Turbo 4 AND the old Inline 6. I have a 2011 528i with the old Inline-6, a very reliable engine. I believe the 2012 and later ones are all Turbo 4's. This guy is a total taint. Comparing a Camry to a 528i based on horsepower? Yea, a Kenworth has more horsepower too. WTF? The 528i RWD is a very well balanced car. BTW it's pronounced OUT not OAT.
This guy is an idiot.
Yes, man. I am a BMW fan and I really do agree with you. The new hood does not look as "aggressive" and sporty as it was.
Lies that car has no leg room in the back only way it has leg room for an adult is to move the front seat all the way up lol
Well i believe most people who buys this car already have a chauffeur so the displacement of the engine isn't their major concerns.
really, what's wrong with this car is bmw's legendary 3 liter six. the reviewer is a complete dope.
you're an idiot.
Is this guy a reviewer or a hater. Left After hearing him talk for 10 sec
Not really, rarely does a man that buys a 5 series have a chauffeur.
In Europe 528i was recently renamed to 530i and can get Adaptive Drive now. Interesting that in any other test Mercedes is considered as pretty low quality vehicle and gets beating from everything from 5 series through Jag XF to Audi A6. Obviously diesels are much more popular here, 530d is extremely fast 40mpg machine and 520d is in real life almost as good as 528i but you get 50mpg with small diesel. It is quite cool to see on board computer to show 930 miles range on one tank!
Sebastian Pienio
You’re lost in the Space
My friend comparing 528i 3.0l to 520d
3 liter six cylinder engine in the 528i? Oh-boy. Maybe a turbocharged 4 cylinder.
+Istvan Tempfli not in America u idiot
+Club Bmw Amg
Does not matter where you are, the 528i for the F10 body (matter of fact all BMWs: 328, X3 with same engine etc) are straight 4s with turbo, you idiot child. Only 535i, X5 and so on are inline sixes. Club BMW LOL more like AMG.
Istvan Tempfli hhahahah I was right u are an idiot, in America the F10 528 is straight six no turbo, in Europe the 528 is 2.0 turbo, ahhahahha
u are soooo stupid
+Club Bmw Amg
hahahahaha OMG
+Club Bmw Amg I'm sorry, you were right.
3 liter inline 6?! i thought the 528i had a turbo 4? (2.8 liter as in 528i)...maybe thats just in europe...? anyway turbo 4 cyl gives u better acceleration, more fuel efficiency, etc. maybe they should add it to the 5 series instead of this antiquated 3.0 i6
That turbo engine has been plagued by lots of issues. To avoid !
Meanwhile in Europe we have 520i🫠
Never Mistaken the 5 series for the 7, and the 528 is the lowest option in North America, to the people who are saying there are lower models.
Isn't there 3 series lol
Yeah I meant the lowest model 5 series
Okay.. in other countries, there are 520i and 523i
Ramiz Jaumeer there's also 518
Bmw didn’t do a bad job with a basic model, even for people who like cars it gets up and goes faster than any other 240hp car I know unless it has a turbo, has a double clutch, spacious, fairly large cabin, nice I drive system and stereo, and it’s a good buisness car, I have a 550i m package which is the top and the 528i doesn’t have a chance comparing with it but I have a 528i too and I still love driving it, there’s pluses and minuses, the 528 is good on gas, the 550 isn’t😂also different grade fuels and cylinders, there’s lower models but the 528i is a great car, I think the only downgrade it how big the tires are and how small the rim itself it, and most of the car is just stock including the bumpers and dynamics, get a 535i with an m package and you’ll be set, then head up to a 550 or m5 or alpina
After years of chasing power I would say this has adequate power. I'd like to see improved steering feel and handling rather than the extra hp.
umm yes i care about the hp. bmw is a drivers car not for the chauffeur, BMWs are super fun to drive and the money you pay for is for the driving experience not sitting in the back seat.Rolls royce or maybach is a chauffuer car
@8motion i hate 4 cylinder cars....when you rev it... it make very very nasty sounds .........
Agree, I've sat in them and they blow away the E90 and E39 BMW's we've owned. Better than Audi, in my opinion.
How do bmws handle around corners, driving wise and from day to day work schedules.? Is there an AWD option for this model? Thanks?
the 2011 bmw 528i and the m5 are the only 2 models that are not available in AWD. overall, if you have little to no experience with cornering with other cars then this one will be very enjoyable for you, as it was for me. however there are BMW's that handle better such as the E90 3 series (2006-2011) because it is lighter, smaller and has a better steering rack, i personally would go for a 3 series because it is worth the trade off in luxury for more fuel efficiency and more importantly, better driving dynamics. still had a ton of fun with my 2011 528i tho
does not know a thing about cars
my 2011 528i x drive ccv is making noise
I'm not sure if it's 10 inches. I know in and only in China, they sell long wheel base 5 series, and even 3 series!! Just because the import tax is so damn expensive.
Sport mode, Mr. Expert.
I am not sure either lol I did not do many researches prior but all i know is the extended wheel base version of the 5 series is almost as long as a standard wheel base 7 series! and you are absolutely right about the import tax. BMW, Mercedes and Audi has been selling 4 cylinder petrol engine vehicles in China for almost a decade now An entry level 523i costs around 70 grand in U.S dollars in China, whereas a fully loaded 550i Xdrive can cost as much as 230 grand U.S dollars! That's crazy!
Go race your fwd Camry you complete poseur. 0-60 in mid 6's is what a 540i was doing 15 years ago. Wah, I want to race Mustangs in my $60,000 car.
They should’ve named it a 520Ti & 530Ti🤷🏽♂️
No mention of fuel comsumption?
Was he supposed to make me want to buy this car? If so he sucks at his job
That guy isn't from the USA. Although I guess he still is an American (Canada)
hows the n52 reliability? got this same car at around 100,000km now (60,000 miles) how much more can i expect from it
i've check the bmw site. it said that 528 is 2liter 4cylinder....is it right??
If you have any bmw with 2.0l engine twin turbo don’t expect to drive it anymore after it’s goes more than 100000km
Bro, what the f_ _ k are you talking about? O-o
hmm for the 5 series i dont think .if the 7 series sure yes.
if i will get it 550i twin turbo V8 with out any doubt.
Doesn't he ever shut up?
Autocrap. Spouting nonsense
No, the problem is that it's an unreliable piece of s***
Hey ma look! A 💰 pitt
N52 is actually quite reliable, easy 200-300k miles. good longevity
I think, incorrect engine pronouncement. I am pretty sure it's a 4 cylinder (Turbo), I may be wrong. My bro has the car and it's impressive, I will like to add.
+Ufuoma Okoro This is 2011 model.
2011 US versioj still had the inline 6
The scratch/dog bark doesn't add much
I believe he said that the 528i is a 6 cylinder. Its not, its a turbo 4.
This is a 4 cylinder turbo engine, not 3.0l R6, that is why it does not feel like a R6 BMW :)
Its an inline 6 cylinder in 2011 Dude.
He said it’s hard to distinguish
a camry hasn't got rear weel drive
I completely disagree.
3:53,the big dummy did a rolling stop.
The 528i has a 2 liter 4 cylinder engine, not a 3 liter 6 cylinder like the video says.
2011 bmw 528i use a 3 liter 6 cylinder. the 2 liter one come with 2012 528i.
the 2011 bmw 528i has an n52 inline 6... do you research man jesus
analanalyst No shit. 81192ps552 told me that almost a year ago.
Dude; you’re dead wrong. The 2011 version still had the 6-inline
l like the old one . 80~96 looks classic and veautiful
what incident?
Im getting the 535i
535i is way to go.
Yup, it is. Nice catch.
new gauges? fkn hell they havent changed in 40 years
the best,,,
good review
Instant power AKA torque.
Test drove a M package one today, good god the thing was gutless. Gorgeous looking car tho, just a shame the actual driving experience is so lack luster
No he's not.
The 528 is a 4cy twin turbo not a 6cyl.... 👎🏽
NO. The US version 2011 model had the inline 6
