  • Over the past several years a number of makers have brought new intermediate bass trombones into their catalogues, in Jupiter's case the JTB1180R. Featuring a 9" rose brass bell, a .562" bore handslide and dual independent rotors the JTB1180R is clearly designed for young bass trombonist, easy to play, durable and with the rotor paddles ergonomically designed for smaller hands. Take a listen and let us know what you think!

I do have some questions about this trombone. First, since the triggers are built with a smaller hand in mind, did you find that it responded quicker or slower than a pro bass trombone? Second, would you use this on a big band gig as a back-up to your main bass trombone? You said when you pushed the air through the instrument, it did not respond like a more advanced bass trombone would. Would a different, maybe smaller, mouthpiece give you that push you were looking for in this? Thank you for your thoughts. As a band and orchestra director, I find these reviews helpful and enlightening.

The description appears to have a typo: Keith says it has a 10" bell, but the text in the description says it has a 9" bell. I play a Jupiter 740L, essentially the same instrument as the JTB1180 with a yellow brass bell, and I found the rotor paddles to be a very comfortable fit. (I'm 5'8", normal size hands.)

I wonder with all the trombones you play what intermediate f-trigger trombone you would say is the most bang for the buck? Thanks, Bill p.
