A lot of arrangers of corps since trombones have been introduced have been using them almost like glorified slide whistles for features and solos, or they'll have them do a little quartet or other gimmick like having 1 alto 1 tenor 1 bass 1 contrabass even though that really just isn't how trombones are meant to be used. Doug's writing always uses them for a timbre or for a different texture in a feature or background, the bass trombone basically doubles the bass line with the tubas in most of his uses to give it more edge, or its used with a full trombone section/ensemble to act as a real bass voice on its own. Essentially, Bluecoats always have a use for the bass trombone that fits in the arrangement instead of a gimmicky little moment that they spent $3000-4000 on.
2019 clearly went the hardest. Bluecoats really paved the way for writing trombone properly into shows. I look forward to great things in the future because of their work
Hadn’t seen any bluecoats horn cams from this past year yet and hearing bump from the pov of a player furthers mu belief that it is one of the hardest movements in dci history.

12:15 DANG! solid! sometimes your lips just don't cooperate with you- every brass player knows what that's like. sometimes it's hard enough to nail a standard octave pedal squarely. I have NEVER heard a trombone belt an octave lower pedal like that before. EVER. Dave Taylor would be proud :D
i take up like 2 pixels of the Bluecoats 2023 headcam! I was very fortunate to see the Bluecoats march, as most of the other marching bands before them did stand-still shows, which is because of the rain that is visible in the shot. Bluecoats was the last to perform there, too. So far that was the only DCI show I've been to, which was in Canton, Ohio.
I too was there, I was so bummed out not getting to see phantom march that night (However the iconic phantom leg pose that the tubas did at the end was memorable)
Your moment in the beginning of that show set the pace for the rest of the show, and it delivered the same and more. Thank you for being such an important part of an amazing show
At this time, the good yamaha (which is what bluecoats are sponsored by) double trigger bass hadnt come out yet, so they used single triggers up until their 2019 show which is when the double trigger came out

As a bass trombonist who marched before DCI allowed trombones, this makes me extremely jealous.
