"Well I'm here in the studio with Vivian Ge, she plays the traditional Chinese musical instrument, the Pipa and she's going to be telling us a little bit about the instrument and hopefully playing some songs for us as well. Thank you very much for joining us today Vivian.
    [Vivian Ge, Pipa Player]
    "Thank You."
    [Ben]
"Could you first introduce our audience to this instrument?"
    [Vivian Ge, Pipa Player]
"The Pipa is an instrument inherited from China's ancient history, according to historical records, it has a history of over two thousand years. The Pipa has always had the title of being the king of folk music. The instrument has a special structure, it is 35 inched long. The 3 or 35 represents heaven, earth and man, and the 5 of 35 represents the 5 elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. It has four strings and these four strings represent the four seasons of spring, summer autumn and winter."
    [Ben]
"What material are the strings made out of?"
    [Vivian Ge, Pipa Player]
"Modern strings are made out of Nylon or Steel, but in ancient times they used beef tendon or silk strings."
    [Ben]
'What are the characteristics of its sound?"
    [Vivian Ge, Pipa Player]
"The sound of the Pipa is pretty special. Its high tones are very bright, its mid tones are gentle and its low tones are thick. Its range of notes is very wide, so it can express an abundant array of sounds. It can express war, it can express culture. Its expressions of culture are more tactful, with an unspoken message to them. In expressing war, the sound is more intense and more forceful."
    [Ben]
"Vivian can you now play for us a few typical Pipa pieces?"
    [Vivian Ge, Pipa Player]
"I'll play a music first called A Moonlit Night On The Spring River. This music describes a scene that the bright moon is in the sky at night, drums are going on, and the river is quietly flowing, and a small boat is floating on the river.
    [Vivian Ge, Pipa Player]
"Next I will play a piece called 'Ambush from 10 Sides.' This piece portrays the story of the battle between the Han and Chu armies at the beginning of the Han Dynasty in 202 BC. At that time, the Han army used an ambush from 10 sides to defeat the Chu army. This piece portrays the whole process of the battle, from the preparation before hand to the intense middle of the battle to the conclusion. I will now play a section of the beginning part of the piece."
    [Ben]
"Vivian, thank you so much for coming to perform in our studio."

NTDTV, thank you for your effort in introducing the Pipa to the world through UA-cam; and the audio even captured her breathing at play. Vivian Ge's short section on "Ambush from Ten Sides" was exquisite.
Thank you. Already subscribed some time back, and, absolutely "favorited" this video :)

actually it is not easy to play and study the Chinese pipa, it has many techniques and timbres. The pipa is heavy and not that easy to carry on the lap. One of the most prolific Chinese instrument.

The Pipa hasn't always been the size it is today. You can see the evolution of the Pipa by looking at it's Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese equivalents. The Japanese Biwa and Korean Bipa resemble the earliest Tang Dynasty Pipa, with the sticking up frets, and moon holes. The Vietnamese Dan Tyba resembles the transition of Tang Dynasty style, to the contemporary Qing Dynasty style. It still has the sticking up frets and shorter neck, but it has the extra frets and no moon holes. Today's Pipa arose in the Qing dynasty where the frets were scalloped and the neck was raised higher. Though, I doubt they should've changed the frets on the neck since no one uses the higher frets anyway. Haha.

If you’re interested in this instrument Pipa, you’ve got to listen to this classic recording by Pipa master Liu Dehai (刘德海) ua-cam.com/video/J42-Z-mxGe4/v-deo.html
This is the same number as the 2nd one played by this lady but much better presented by the Master. Name is 十面埋伏(Ambushed from Ten Directions). For the historical story behind this classical piece: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambush_from_Ten_Sides?wprov=sfti1

Isn't the pipa analogous to the Japanese biwa or lute often played by geisha? I believe the Chinese harp is also roughly the same as the Japanese koto. The Japanese seem to have acquired much of their musical and cultural tradition, along with Buddhism from the Chinese mainland by way of the Korean kingdoms of Paekche and Silla.

    • @zygmuntnowak8400
      @zygmuntnowak8400 8 років тому +4

+John Andre Yes, pipa is ancestor of biwa as far as I'm aware. Koto isn't a harp but a zither but it is closely related to chinese guzheng.

Beautiful instrument but I didn't like the songs chosen. Did not seem like a very good depiction of the range and elegance of the instrument. I would have liked to see more of the melodic capabilities but understand that the artist was more interested in conveying the stories behind the traditional songs. Much better melodic pieces can be found online though.
