I remember how, after the 2011 attack, the crown prince held a speech that included the line "If one man can show this much hate, imagine how much love all of us can show together".
That is totally not his quote... That was a tweet done in the days after the attack
I think if you ask Norwegians “do you like the monarchy” maybe some or a lot will say they are not needed or that it’s old school. But if you ask any Norwegian “do you like the king ? The queen? The crown prince and princess?” I don’t think anybody would say no.
They are very humble personable funny and close to the people. So they are generally very well liked ❤️

So true. I just had a weird thought. If our king and the royal family came out tomorrow and declared they're stepping down as a royal family and letting the monarchy end, i feel like we'd all be kinda sad actually. Like our reaction would literally be "What? Okay, we don't actually need you that much, but are you sure? That's kinda sad. Where will you go? You can stay royals if you want. That's no problem". 😂 We'd seriously say "what no don't go". Like a child being left by their parents or a friend saying they're gonna move away. We'll be fine but this sucks.

I’m half Swedish, half English and grew up in Norway. When I grew up I used to say “I’m half Swedish, half English and 100% Norwegian”. You could either call that terrible maths or a sign that Norway can be one, regardless of where you came from.
Also, having lived in both Scotland and England I’m confident that Scottish people are more similar to Norwegians than they are to the English. The mindset, the sense of social responsibility and a lot of other things seem more Scandi than English. Even the Scots language is filled with Norwegian words and ideas. Scotland has been screwed over by the English for far too long. It’s time for Scotland to take back control of their own destiny. It’s time for independence.
Scotland should join the Nordic countries !

I remember when the former King Olav died... He was very popular... His son Harald didnt have the most popular vote I think but he has proved us doubters very wrong.. He grew into a very beloved King for our Country and this speech speaks for our Kingdoms values very well
The Royal family in norway have broken with tradition. By marring non royals. Harald did it and Håkon did as well. The English royal family was not happy. Fuck them. The Royal family was actually voted in. But they have no political power. But they are allowed to advice. This is a grey area wich Harald "abused" or used. The king also have a Veto. if he say no to anything the government decide.. they can not do it. But he has 3 strikes.. if he says no third time..he has to abdicate. Any government that would force the king to do that.. would be a political suicide. As we are mainly decent people.. so is the royal family .
The Norwegian royal family is generally very popular in Norway. They have been there since Norway became truly independent after over 500 years under either Denmark or Sweden. King Haakon (King Harald's grandfather) was actually elected king by the norwegian people and became king in 1905, since then they have been highly reevered by the people.
Especially during and after ww2, when King Haakon supported the resistance and refused to accept the german puppet government. He had a lot of small moments where he proved his commitment to democracy and the norwegian people. His grandson Kong Harald still keep this tradition alive today.
Harald is actually known to be very humble, opinionated and known as "the people's king". This is because he and most of the royal family wear mostly normal clothes, except offical events of course. He has competed for norway in the olympics as a sailor in 1964, 1968 and 1972. He is also known for being there on the "front lines" so to speak when disaster and horrible things happen.
...for example during the dark time that followed the 22.July attacks in 2011. He held a speech on unity, solidarity, love and democracy. He focused on healing the people that hurt and going together as a nation to be more open and democratic. He spoke as a king yes, but also as a father and grandfather as he understands how heart wrenching the bomb and the shooting wrought on families, on friends, and the shock state that the nation was in.
The speech he held in 2016 was for me and many others a confirmation that Harald is a man that wishes the best for Norway, he aknowledges the parts where we lack and wants to improve it. He still as a 86 year old man that struggles with sickness and a deteriorating body ALWAYS stand up for people that struggles, we have had a lot of though times in Norways the last few years with covid, a massive landslide, floods etc. He shows up to the communities, make awerness around it, encourages solidarity, voulantary work and charity.
Ofcourse there are also people that feel the monarchy is outdated especially among teens that sees the world being mostly republics without the need of a royal family. I think that there will come a time when the norwegian monarchy is abolished, but with Harald his wife Queen Sonja and their sucsessors, I am happy that Norway is a monarchy and I hope I don't live til the day where it will be abolished. Because they are a symbol, they are wonderful people, they serve as figures that wishes the best for Norway and the people that live here.
As the royal motto has been for over a hundred years: "Alt for Norge" "Everything for Norway :-)

Norway takes few refugees, in order to have the resourcces needed give each of them what they need once they get here.
Giving them a place to stay, teaching them the language and so on. Knowing the local language comes in handy in almost every social setting, as well as for work. This is one of the reasons we don't have the same issues as Sweden.

I live in Norway and our neighbourhood has a few houses and apartments dedicated to house immigrants and others who cant sustain themselves for any reason, and despite the language barrier and other differences, they're great people and im honestly so happy to live in a country that treats humans like humans
U must never have been to any of the larger norwegian citys cus that statement is wrong. There are ghettos where migrants are numerous enough in the bigger citys and in Østlandet/Viken the most. In smaller places, they either adapt to the locals or they move to Østlandet/Viken.

There is a difference between places that are favorable for immigrants and dangerous ghettos placed by authorities. Where do you think there are specific dangerous ghettos with poorly integrated immigrants in Norway?
Kamzy Gunaratnam, who comments on the video, was on Utøya during the terrorist attack in 2011. She swam half a kilometer in relatively cold water while the terrorist shot at her. I am incredibly impressed with her.

King Harald V is in my opinion, one of the Best Constitutional Monarchs in the World. All the Scandinavian Monarchs are very much alike. I live in a Commonwealth Country of the Britain & so have a share in the British Monarchy. I wish I didn't.The Love & determination of King Harald V, his Consort Queen Sonya, the Heir Apparent Crown Prince couple Prince Haakon, Princess Mette - Marit & their Children Princess Ingrid Alexandra & Prince Sverre Magnus, the Nucleus of the Norwegian Royal Family, have of Norway & for the Norwegian People, is evident in all they do. To me, that is the Keystone of any Monarch & their Royal Family, to be selfless, to serve & above all to Love the People of their Kingdom & their Kingdom first, before their own wants & wishes. This is something that King Harald V of Norway, Queen Margarethe ll of Denmark & King Carl XVl of Sweden, all share & why they are so Popular with their People. They also safeguard the Tradition, Culture & Values of their People & they do everything they can to ensure of a Happy, Prosperous & Safe Norway for themselves & their People to Enjoy. All of those 3 Countries, have a Shared History that goes back Centuries, their Native Languages are so close, they are easily able to understand each others, they hold the same Values & share many Traditions, they also have interwoven Cultures. Yes, there are some very Regal Ceremonies & Traditions, but generally the Royal Family of Norway, are very much down to Earth, with very little Pomp & are blessed with a great deal of Common Sense. All in all, their Popularity, the Love & Respect they're held in by the People, all stems from the obvious Love they have for their Country & it's Well Being & their determination that their People will have the absolute Best of the things their Monarch can influence. They are the Epitome of what a Good Monarch should be.
This is the second time i have heard this speech and although British and not Norwegian it makes me cry its so great. I remember the news after the terrible bombing and shooting in Norway. The King and Queen walked to the sqpart of the city where candles and white roses were being laid. They pleaced their roses and both of them were openly weeping and standing as one with other Norwegian citizens in grief. I'll never forget that.

The Norwegian and Britiah royal family is actually related. Queen Elizabeth and King Harald were second cousins. They shared the same great-grandparents, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, who were the father and mother of Norway's own Queen Maud (King Harald’s grandmother who was princess of Great Britain). Many of the royal families are related. The Danish queen and King Harald is also second cousins.
Not to mention that king Haralds parents was cousins, blood related alright.
Who are all direct descendants of Rollo of Normandy, who were either from Norway or Demnark originally. (It is not possible to determine his original birthplace, but it is either Norway or Demnark)
Princess Maud of wales who was the wife of prince Carl of denmark who later became Queen Maud of Norway and King Håkon had a child named Alexander that later became Crown Prince Olav of Norway. Olav Married his cousin Princess Martha of sweeden. They had the child Harald who was the first Prince who married Sonja that was just a normal Norwegian girl. Sonja had the child Håkon and so the Norwegian Royal bloodline actualy started with Princess Martha of Norway and crownprice Håkon who will be our next King

You are regarded as an immigrant in Norway only as long as you don't have a Norwegian passport. We don't classify the citizens by race like they do in USA. On public forms they will sometimes ask you about nationality, but that's it. For instance, we don't put race on the drivers licence like the Americans do, that is not a thing here
That's not really true. For one, bureau of statistics counts first and second generation immigrants, and there is discrimination based on what your name is (though not officially)
Not true, in statistics and sometimes one is called immigrants, «Norwegian pakistanis» for example. Would be weird to not say that. In the US immigrants rally around the flag. They swear an oath. People come together. Racism is still a problem, but the US is good at making those who go there Americans. Probably better than Norway

I am a Republican, Europa wise, but we have had the best luck ever, when it comes to the monarks. After king Harald comes king Håkon, and then queen Ingrid. Yes they are loved, even by republicans.
While I vote a party that pricipally is against the notion that someone should be born into a position, I do see many advantages with having a symbolic head of state that stands above the sometimes messy world of elections, having to weigh their words against the results on the next elextion, etc. Another big advantage with maintaining a Monarchy, is how it gives an ace in diplomatic situations. The royal family has basically been to "diplomat school" their entire life.

I am Norwegian and I can say that we dont really have a strong opinion about the monarchy. We like and respect the king and I think he has an important role. Personally I like the king and think the royal family has issues like any family. I wish them well, and I am proud of our king who has served our country and its people well.

I worked for the King and our country. Over two years in the airforce,and the last 6 month in the NATO. I had the Norwegian flag on my uniform and was so proud. Realy proud! My station got shut down because of the gouvernment. This is 18 years ago. Am i proud of the Norwegian flag now..... Because the King Harald, YES!!! The goverment.....NO!! I will always want to have a king or queen here.
Yes, our monarchy is much loved by the general public, every few years Norske Galup does a poll if we would like Norway to become a Republic and the number has for the last 3/4 of a century stayed pretty much the same about 75% of the asked wants to keep the Royals as they are. only 25% want a republic and most of them do think that out of the Principe of it more then that they dislike our royal family.
About 20 years back, the poll had a second question, if Norway where to become a republic how would you want as president for the republic, first and second place where our king and the Crown-prince. Simply put, most Norwegian do whole hearty dislike and distrusted our politicians and prefer the royal family as a head of state.

In a time where it's the easiest to be connected....yet we have never been more disconnected from one another.
Our king is a great king. As a crown prince he was in the shadow of his father, who was also very beloved. As a king he grew into his role, and became his own person and not a shadow of another great man. The difference between our royals and others is that we have a very small royal house. We do not have nobility, and it is just a handful of people who have royal titles. The king, the queen, the crown prince and princess and their two kids (okey.. that is six, more than a handful). The princess royal is only princess by name since she married a civilian and runs her own business (she's one that splits the peoples opinions). The king has two sisters, and both are (and were.. the oldest died a few years ago) princess by name. The Norwegian equality that includes the majority of our people is strong because everyone has the same opportunities to begin with. Most people belong to some kind of "working middle class". None has more privileges than the other. Most people get their education from the public school, there are very few private schools in Norway, and no special schools for the elite. When the country struck gold and found oil in the north sea, the income was spent on developing the society. That is why it is just the last years signature buildings like the Oslo opera house, the national museum, the Munch museum and the developing of Oslo's fjord side have been created and build.
You mention at the end that the King says these things in a straight way, and I believe the reason he "gets away with" such authority is that, as well as being the King, he is also much loved and respected by the people. King Harald has shown great humility and humanity through all the years as monarch, so people know that he does not say this out of selfish ambition or a need to rule, but out of love for his country and people.
I am Norwegian, "old School" as one may say, and I do not care for the Monarchy any more. New times, and we need to change. The world is always changing, the Royal family is nice enough, but we are all changing, the world is changing rapidly. The king's father, kin Olav, was really close to his people - this king not so much, so it is changing. But that is all right, nothing wrong with change in a pace that makes everybody follow.

We don't mind much about the Monarchy, in general They are mostly ceremonial, just like the President of France etc. We didn't vote for him, but his family has been truly upstanding throughout the years. The current king's grandfather refused to become a stooge of the nazis, so he went to the UK (and then the US) and spearheaded our forces to oppose the forces of Hitler, wherever! So, yeah, I'm not a Royalist as such! But if we have to have any kind of ceremonial head of state, let us have someone whose family at least proved themselves to have a backbone!
As A Norwegian we generally like the monarchy, some dislike the expenditure towards it, but most like the people and find it to be a unifiying thing
Im norwegian. I didnt really see the importance of the monarchy as a kid and figured democracy would be better since thats what everyone else seemed to think.
However in 2011 after the terrorist attack by a.b.b before the news about who this person were had been spilled to media there was a lot of xenofobi brewing across the different channels.
Terrorist attack? Car bomb? must be an immigrant right? The king goes on the television and starts to remind us of these core beliefs, who we are and what we stand for. And most of it simply just disappeared like a fart in the wind. One of the following days a 'rose march' was held in the capital in support of the victims and their families. I've never seen so many people in the capital before, never even close to it. And hate speech during it was completely unheard of, at least by my and my friends' experience.
Thats when I realized the power of a monarch when used correctly. And the funny thing is.. I know someone that knows someone who works at the norwegian castle and for most part.. our dear king for most part just wants to be left alone to watch his sports on the telly ^^,
The King is extremely popular in Norway. He makes it hard to be a republican in Norway because you know it will not happen in our lifetime He is a really decent human being so there is nothing to critizise.
I think most Norwegians are very happy in their country, they value the nature we have, they like the mentality. But we also have those who always have to complain. All Norwegians should be very grateful to have been born in Norway. We generally have a decent economy, most of us, and those who struggle can get help from the state.
We have little trouble with earthquakes, volcanoes or tornadoes, but we have had some storms that have left their mark. We didn't have problems with murder, we didn't have politicians who only serve their own interests. We didn't have problems with child crime, we didn't have electricity problems, but Norway is on an unsafe path, which we must get away from as soon as possible.

There is a ton of immigrants in norway, around 15% of the population is, and it's always been a topic of discussion if we should let in more or close the floodgates, and its a big discussion, but a fair discussion, there is a worryingly amount of people fleeing from their countries, and not every country can, will or want to take people in, at the moment the biggest group of people coming to norway is ukranians, around a 1000 a week, which is quite a lot for such a small country, but there's gonna be a ton from palestine, there's always been a ton from the middle east, and alot of working migrants, but that has slowed down a bit because of the currency value in norway. I don't know what's right or wrong, but if we have the space, the money, and recourses to take care of immigrants, why shouldn't we.

According to "Statistisk sentralbyrå" and "Statistiska Centralbyrån" (the main authority for the preparation and dissemination of official statistics in namely Norway and Sweden) In 2022 - 20% of Swedens population of 10,4 million were born abroad. In Norway the numbers are 16-18% in a population of 5,5 million. So as you can see, not that much of a difference. In my personal opinion, Sweden must have done something wrong in their work with integration, but it's a much more complex matter than that, a lack of police for instance. Also as we're both part of Schengen (and Sweden EU), criminal gangs from all over Europe can move freely across borders. The violence we're seeing portrayed in the media are mostly related to drug dealing networks and other criminal activity. As nice as it is to travel without much hassle, maybe we should consider reinstating border control? As a Norwegian I wouldn't mind.
The advantages of Schengen are still much bigger than the disadvantages. Even if there is border control, this won't stop criminals from passing the border unnoticed. Especially with a large coastline it's impossible to guard it all. Sweden is having difficulties with immigrant integration, but that can be said of many countries in Europe at the moment. It's not easy to be welcoming and to provide all that is necessary for all immigrants and prevent dissatisfaction with the existing population, but I'm still happy that a lot of countries are at least making an effort to do the good thing.
Border control will not stop that crime. This crime is done by people born and living in Sweden. Integration is the solution.

The people also move in and out and it spreads not only to immigrant kids but also organisations like HA and so on. It’s naive to think everything happens within their borders. It’s a huge network of criminals from all over Europe.
I`m a native Norwegian and I agree with him in several ways. I personaly dont care as long as the country is respected by the people living in it. There are a lot of immigrants that dont at all. They dont basic respect for the systems or the natives. So you will see people that is highly disrespectful while benefiting from the system. We also have a lot of immigrants that respect what has been built and the other people living in the country, those people I welcome with open arms. But I dont want people that want to force a culture on others, when they came here willingly.
as a immigrant who came to Norway when I was 8, I agree. I grew up here and my parents have tried to integrate us into the Norwegian society. Of course I still love my heritage and I`m proud of my native culture, but I`m also proud of living here and in some way call myself Norwegian (even though some native Norwegians don`t see me as one). I follow laws and I work hard, and when I see foreigners who choose to go against the law I get so angry because here you have Norwegians opening their country for you to only f*ck them over.
In Norway (I think all of scandinavia) we have something called the law of Jante. Its 100% ingrained in our culture. It basically comes down to this: dont think you're better than anyone else. You a ceo of a big company? You're no better than the ppl working for you. You're the king of Norway? You're one with the ppl, not better. If you break this law, you'll find yourself ghosted by the whole population. We have a hard time with American culture due to this, as they are more into celebrating individualism.
When it comes to Sweden and immigration they have more immigrants than us yes. And while its not the case anymore, for a long time they didnt require immigrants to even learn swedish or any kind of integration. So you'll have 2nd and 3rd generation of say for example Turkish, who only identify as Turkish, but living in Sweden. It also limits work opportunities, creates ghettos etc.
We all love and respect King Harald very much. Like we loved and respected his father Olav the fifth and his grandfather King Haakon the seventh. We are all very proud of our Royal Family.

He's just doing his job, and fulfilling the social contract between the monarch and the people who would remove him if he started to change the contract or didn't fulfill the requirements of the job. The first king - prince Carl, set the precedence. He demanded a popular referendum before accepting the offer of the throne.. he came to power in Norway as the fish world war was just about to wipe out the old kings and emperors of Europe in 1905. The monarchy is therefore very different from the English or some nations that have strong ties to a feudal past.. Norway escaped from Swedish and Danish feudalism without any real power resting in the aristocracy - so we're kind of used to being able to decide for ourselves, and own the country collectively if at all. Cooperation, with individual freedoms and rights and responsibilities is probably just a condition of life on this barren rock in the north.

A correction of quite a few comments I have seen is that it's not the king of Norway, rather it's Norway's king. The difference is that the first owns the country and the second the country "owns" the king.

Too many immigrants in too short time, in Sweeden. And too little integration. The young sons and daughters of immigrants do not feel sweedish, do not feel they belong. So they search for people to connect with and they find other troubled souls. The burning of their holy book was like putting gasoline on glowing coal.
It's not like everything is daisies and roses here in Norway either. We have our share of idiots who check how much melanin your skin has. But most of us turn our back to them. We like diversity. It makes our country richer. And, btw... the king is much loved❤
Being Norwegian, I can say that most people truly respect King Harald. He is an extremely down to earth individual, and the royal family in Norway doesn't really have all too much political power anyways. I think he could get a pardon in or two, but that's about the extent of it. Its more like being a public figure than anything.

But yes, technically the king can overrule the sentence given by our judicial system.

The difference between Norway and Sweden isn't really the number of immigrants, but how we've integrated them.
While I generally disagree with the far right in Norway I have to give them credit for asking the difficult questions about integration.
When you have foreigners in your country the goal shouldn't be to assimilate them, but to *integrate* them.
Some of the things we've done that has worked is spreading the refugees out around the country, and having a shared public school where the majority of our pupils study together, immigrants and locals together.
Our kindergartens are heavily subsidized and affordable, with all children having the right to a spot, meaning that kids also play together as children, regardless of class or ethnicity or religion etc.
Norway is far from perfect, and our asylum process is outright inhumane, and our family reunion system is the strictest in Europe...
But for the most part people that actually makes it in here are treated well, at least by the government.
It's really, really difficult to integrate culturally with Norwegians...
We're even more reserved then Brits, although apparently less so then Poles and Finns...
In Sweden there's a housing shortage, and the government systems designed to help immigrants to get a home and to survive ends up leaving immigrants heavily concentrated in a few areas with few prospects of a better life, little to do for the youth and a sense of being outsiders.
There's more support for stay at home parents and less so for integration into the workforce and the education system.
We definitely have challenges here too, and in recent years Swedish gang crimes and violence has started to spill over the border to us too.
But our situation is still far better then in Sweden.
We *do* have racism, that attack mentioned in the video is just the most extreme example of that, we *do* have ethnic tensions.
And other issues as well.
But you can *feel* how our leaders are *trying* to do their best, even if they sometimes fail...
Sweden has taken alot of imigrant in without having the ability to intergrate them into the society. Its very sad to see, areas where youth dont have the option to get a proper jobb, then turning into to criminal activities and being used by oranised crime to kill other people. I hope sweden can get control, and help its people. Also for long it has been seen as rasicm to try and talk about and do anything about the problem.

Well, Norway wants to help every country out there and show solidarity because Norway wants to be liked by everyone. Norway helps every country in need except their citizens that are struggling. The Government are complaining about wasting the national budget and that results in cutting down expenses by taking from their own people instead of cutting down on the donations and support to other countries. Norway want to show solidarity to everyone except their own just to attempt to be liked by every other countries out there except its citizens.
Another problem is that we are taking in too many refugees, and the second problem is placing them in small counties. If you put too many people in small towns you end up with higher living prices and fewer places to rent. When there are no places left to rent locals are forced to move away from their home town.

Sweden's migrationsystem has been overwhelmed due to the fact that since 2013-2020 almost a million immigrants have arrived here, and due to the ignorance from our previous governments, it has been chaos, however our current government is attempting to fix the long problem.

I mean they aren’t bad people. But there are definitely more and more people that would like to become a republic. Especially amongst younger people, I find a lot of people share my view that it’s a fundamentally undemocratic institution that should be abolished
We do have a lot of immigrants. Our population is increasing because of immigration. Norwegians do not have a big enough birth rate to keep status quo. Though there are some signs of what they do have in Sweden here as well, but for now not as huge.
Problem with the immigrant in sweden is that they opened the border completely. and completely lost control. And they let in all kinds of people. people who dont want to be integrated or didn't flee from war or poverty but only wanted to create havoc,destruction and chaos from within. There is groups like this in Norway too but not as big/large as in Sweden. Most people are afraid to speak freely..Because if they say something other dont like you will be stamped as a "Racist". If you disagree with a colored person here you will be stamped as a Racist. And that is completely wrong. Its the same is Sweden too. this comment is prob gonna be deleted because someone will report it as unproper.or what ever its called.
Just realize: The King does not write the speech. Like the US president, he has writers, or helpers, to help him find the right words.
It does make it easier for you as a private person to ask for help when you need it when you know even leaders need help too no?
@@EO-McLoud Well, the King us not a leader, not really. He was born in a family, not even the oldest one, but he was male, and that makes a great leader? I am a leader at work, because of my experience in the branch.
But we all have to ask for help. President or homeless, we're just humans.
If it's anything like speeches of other monarchs, the final text is made by writers, but the core of the text is mainly his own input. We put too much value in appearance these days.

The King is well liked but monarchy itself has no place modern society. Just my personal and maybe unpopular view; we the tax payers should not subsidize them at all that expense could go to something useful like healthcare.
Would you be happier "subsidize" a president ? Are you happy subsidizeing Norwegian politicians ? Problem with people like you is that you don't really have any good reasons to remove the king. Only lame excuses. We have had kings for over 1000 years ... why change something that works ?

Personally, I couldn't care less about the royal family. I just don't get why it's necessary. They're just regular people born into privilege. There are so many people who pay attention to and get caught up in what the royal family is wearing, where they live, what they did at a party, what the princess is doing, there are news stories left and right about the most mundane things. I just couldn't care less. There's nothing special about them, they're just people. I don't have anything against them, I think they seem really humble, smart and beautiful. I just don't care to keep up with their lives.

Norway is split and divided in the harshest way and this woke speech is dreadful. Ask ANY of the migrants, 1, 2 or some 3rd generation: are u norwegian? The answer is always "no". And they add their ethnic origin to "norwegian" or they simply just call themselves afhgans, pakistanis, somalis etc etc.
Weird how they are able to preserve THEIR pride of their heritage, while in this case, norwegians have to feel bad about theirs and are more or less forced to accept that other people can just come here and claim they are the same as they are. Cus u cant do that in ANY other country outside of the west.
And no. Most norwegians would vote us out of monarchy if we had democracy here. We dont, so in a generation or two, ethnic norwegians will be a blast in the past and no one knows how they ever looked like.
But i bet a symbolic 5 dolares EVERYONE will still know how somalis, afghanis, pakistanis etc etc looks like.
