Norway= liberal economy, low level of state Investment in critical services and strong individual liberty.
A welfare system and social security net is not a socialist idea, and the Norwegian welfare system is widely different than a socialist welfare system.
The Norwegian welfare system is based in our monarchy and is something we can trace back to the feudal system, centuries before socialism was a thing.

Americans finaly researching the taxes we really pay in "socialist" countries in Europe while having "free" education, healthcare, etc. and realizing they pay more in some places in America while having none of that.
What is most interesting is that Norwegians get back 84% of everything we have paid in taxes. A US citizen gets only 19%. That's the most important thing. Norway has 5.4 million inhabitants - no government debt but a 9-year budget in reserve of $ 1.3 trillion. www.nbim.no

@@MiamiManiac Yee. I think soo. We dont have big incometaxes because its incl. age-pensionsaving. The tak is 9% for incom like $12000 and 33.3% for $125000. But first you deduct expenses for income - also all interest on loans and credits - from the balance you pay tax.

Not true. All of the 254 billion norwegian kroner used from the oil fund last year went to pay the 264 billion nok bill from imigration (official numbers -real numbers are most likely higher). Norwegians pay their own way and more. Still our hospitals and schools are among the worst in the western world. Don't believe official statistics.

I have experience from hospitals in Sweden, Norway, Ireland and Hungary. Out of these countries Norway is willing to spend to most per patient and pays for better but more expensive medications and procedures. Yet norway still has a way to go.
The international student assessment results for norway arent amazing, but still consistantly top 20 in the world.

Well, the US is good for the ruling class, not so much for everyone else. That's why the wealthiest people in the US always talk about how great it is, and they convince poor people that they can one day win the lottery and be rich. That delusion is what keeps the poor believing in the American dream while they are being robbed blind by the rich. Meanwhile the US is a paradise for billionaires and business owners who have unlimited potential to hoard wealth, influence government, evade taxes, pay poverty wages, etc.

Norway has a systemic problem. The hospitals are ridden with administrators that are busy building their own career and fight each other. In addition to that are norwegian doctors quite poorly trained although they receive 5,5 years of education. If you need a doctor in Norway you will soon realize that east european doctors working here are more qualified.

What happens for an american if they are immobilized in a car crash, and has to stay a week in the hospital? Does that equal my tax for the last year? last 10? 20? What third world country bankrupts a person for being in an accident? How the fuck do you pay 10k for giving birth? Where is the logic in that?
And for tax. I pay 35%, and have done for 20 years. I will easily pay that for someone else getting a free week in the hospital for an accident. No question.

Also I imagine norwegians trust their government to correctly allocate funds to these social programs. With the way American politics are I don't trust the government to allocate tax funds in a way that benefits us, I'd rather just pay for my own shit. CA for example has insanely high taxes and people in california don't get shit for it, it just goes into the pockets of corrupt politicians and Unions. They could do a 24 hour operation on me, and i would be billed 0,-. No charge. Nothing. And if it happens to my neighbour, i would gladly pay that tax for him to recieve the same care.

I know taxes are high in many European countries but at least the citizens/legal residents get thier taxes worth in services. Here in America we pay taxes and get crumbs.

The taxes in Europe aren’t even that high compared to America. Most of the time they’re actually the same or lower
Well in Germany we pay in taxes for our government retirement Insurance plans. Guess what. Each year we get less and less retirement funds. In Germany you can‘t live on the retirement funds that you get except if you are government employee. Same case with “free” education. People all over the world pay the high tuition fees and go to US but not that many people want to take advantage of “free” education in Germany.
@@Tinfoilhat2023 In Norway, we have several social security funds for old-age benefits. The main fund is of course www.nbim.no which now has approximately Euro 1.1 Trillion. I understand well that not many people study in Germany - It is probably due to the fact that the language is not a world language. The same applies in Norway. We have many international students - but they go to schools that are often very advanced and the teaching is in English.

Just to be clear; China has a one-party state, Norway has a full democracy currently represented by 9 parties from right to left. China has very limited freedom of expression through art, and full cencorship on critics towards the political system. Norway have full freedom in every way of expression through art, open debate, religious gatherings and worship, open critics of public services etc. So, living in Norway, I think we can say that the only socialistic reality is that some of the public services like hospital and universitets are paid through the taxes. The main media channels here are also coloured by the left.

The taxes isn't what is costly in Norway, it is the VAT. That is why some products are so expensive in Norway. For instance gasoline, liquor or cigarettes. So when tourists are complaining about expensive merchandise, they dont realize it is part of the VAT.

The REAL avg personal tax rate in Norway is actually 27.3%. Most normal people in working age pay around 22-24%. Incremental taxes are added as you make more money and/or own more value. At least this is how it was explained to me by a person i trust on these issues. I did not fact check this but seems accurate based on my own numbers

Well, yes - we do. However, compared to the US you would have to see Europe as a whole to become geographically comparable. So, if we travel comparatively what for you would be two states over then there's a totally different language. So to compare, I can now speak two and a half language well (Norwegian, English and German) and can understand Swedish, Danish and French. And I'm nothing special in that regard. However, if all of Europe had one common language I'm sure I wouldn't have learned that many languages...

Australia is the best place to be middle class. Amazing beaches, any climate you want, low crime, universal healthcare and great schools. VAT/GST is just 10%. Income tax is 0% for $20,000 per year. 19.3% for $70,000. 25% for $166,000 33% for $204,000. However if you make millions you will pay 47%. Long term (1 year) capital gains is 0% up to a max of 23.5%. NZ is the best place for billionaires, top income rate is 33% and 0% capital gains tax. NZ is amazingly lovely like Australia.

Sounds like Australia. We have free medical but all workers pay a “Medicare levy”. Our taxes are very high but we have a good social security system (public housing, unemployment benefits, pensioner payments for all people over 65). When we buy a property we pay 4% “Stamp duty” and every investment property sold is subjected to capital gains tax. Average tax is 32.5% and goes as high as 45%. We have 10% GST on all purchases. Min wage for a 17 yr old is $19.84 p/hr. However life is good in Australia and very low homeless rate. Now during Covid, almost the entire country and businesses have been paid by the government for the past nine months to prevent businesses closing and unemployment. It feels like it’s working because the property market is now booming all over the country and the economy is chugging along in spite of Chinas spiteful trade embargoes on us. The government was about to announce a surplus just before Covid hit, but of course now there is a major deficit.

Guy from Norway here. Most people in Norway pay a tax at about 33-35%. Richer people pay more for money they make after a certain number, but for the majority of the population this does not apply. We are a mixed economy, which means the state takes care of certain things (like healthcare, education and so on, although with private options if you have money) and private market interests takes care of selling clothes, food and so on, with some governement oversight to avoid monopolies and unfair pricehicking (like your american pharma compenies do all the time). We are not socialists, we are a social democracy, those are different ideologies and i will take great offense (as would most norwegians) of any comparisson to China, venezuela or other socialist or communist states. Hope this helped clear some things up.

@@alexanderka1956 That's a misconception created by US media to serve special interests. This was leaked recently by MSNBC I think... Search on UA-cam you'll find it. There is no perfect health care system, anywhere, but Canada's system is among the best. Whether you are on unemployed or a billionaire, you have equal access to free medical care... Same doctors, hospitals, etc.

Seriously in Canada clinics are closed on weekends meaning you better not get sick during weekends, and if you go to public hospital the waiting time is so long that you are better off trying your luck with alternative medicine at home instead, and that's videotaped by a Canadian where the doctor/nurse tells them they should go to a private doctor otherwise they would have to wait for months just to get an examination by a real Doctor, so the all day long wait is for a nurse to see you and tell you if you need to see a doctor or not and then you wait months for a doctor. Like really? And that is actually videotaped. So no Canada has no healthcare system to be proud of. There are only a few countries that free healthcare system works and that should be the Scandinavian countries, and perhaps that has to do with the ethics of the people who work at hospitals and who actually care about doing their job the right way. Other than a few countries out of 195+ everywhere else, universal healthcare is crappier that actuall crap. So universal healthcare should either consist of unpaid doctors who will accept anonymous donations from their patients or just actually do good and health people completely for free with maybe a guarantee of living quarters and food. Otherwise I trust no doctor to heal me, because for starters they are big time liers and or big time see stupid sheep following whatever is told to them by people with money and people with power.

I think people understand this, but that is not the point. If Norway can sustain this sort of policy without hyperinflation and w/ solid GDP then America has to face the fact that we’d rather use taxes for national defense, bailing out failing banks and companies etc.
If young Americans start flocking to Norway for education, we couldn’t blame them but this will prove detrimental in the long run.

Another Norwegian reality. You can be at home sick or for your child for 3 days with 100% salary - self-declaration. After a medical certificate, your employer pays 100% salary for the first 17 days (they are insured) and the State pays your sick pay 100% for 12 months. If you are seriously ill, 70% is paid until you recover.
That wouldn't work here because people would abuse it. You can only have that sort of thing with people who value integrity.
You say the U.S is the greatest country on Earth. But at what though? What specifically are you guys so great at? It's not like you top the list of anything. Well except military spenditure and people incarserated. But besides that, the U.S doesn't really come out on top, ever.

For each liter of petrol you buy in Norway, for instance, you pay 8 kroner to the state, 6 kroner to the oil company and 2-3 kroner to the gas-station...
So yes, we have quite low tax, but stuff costs money. Denemark has lower fees on goods, and higher tax. And also: Americans sould read up on the difference between a totalitarian economy and a welfare-state.

Norway is NOT socialist. It is a capitalistic country where the government takes control over the markets that don't work on its own due to monopolistic competition. For example, healthcare does not work on its own, because everyone is willing to pay as much as they can. Thus the government is the best at taking care of that because they aren't looking for a big profit. Private healthcare providers exist in Norway as well, but they are forced to keep their prices low as they have to compete with the government. So in that sense, Norway is actually MORE capitalistic than the US as they protect the free market and aim to make it as close as possible to perfect competition.
Did you take into account social security taxes? In Finland you have to add about 15% on top of income tax rate for social security payment.

In Norway, it is 10% on services, 16% on food and 25% on other than the average in Europe with less social benefits. The average income tax is 24.7% about half of Denmark and far down the lists in Europe. Pension savings are then included.

Taxes and fees in Norway are obviously very well valued nationally and for you as a person. In the course of a lifetime, you get back 84% of everything you have paid in taxes and fees - i.a. a very good old-age pension compared to all other countries. In the US, you get back only 19% of your payments and taxes and fees are not far from the Norwegians who are otherwise low by European standards. There is broad agreement in all political parties that we do not want to lower social security - free health - free school, 100% sickness benefits, etc.

That you want a system adapted for you is understandable - so the Scandinavian model does not fit in your head. But 20 million people prefer it and for some reason you are here too. The best I can say to you is that you have the wrong focus. You never get anyone to support you in Norway - most and richest are actually happy. So if you want to earn more - then make sure and forget about taxes and fees - it's your reality based on democracy here. I also like low taxes and fees - but have a good standard of living and should never think about sudden health costs or how to plan my old age. I can use my life to live and have a good time with my children - then obviously life expectancy will also be highest. It seems to me that you only exist - spend your life on dysfunctional thinking and do not enjoy life. But I can be wrong.

Norway is neither communistic nor capitalistic. We have a mix of both. Thanks to our taxes, we have equal pay, low economic class divisions since people with a low income pay less taxes and people with high income pay higher taxes. Because of our taxes, we also get a supported income from our state if we're not able to find a job, the state also helps us find a job for free. Schools, kindergartens, roads and hospitals are also and more available for us to use since it's in the countries tax budget. Because of our oil fund, we have 9 years worth of plan b money if our country would suddenly fail. Our government has no debt with 1.2 trillion usd in it's oil fund. It seems to me that our country and all other scandinavian and european countries understands what they should actually spend money on to keep the country and it's population happy and up to date. We don't spend almost all of our taxes on our military since we have our NATO agreement in case a country in that agreement would be attacked. The US is one of 30 country members, just because your country spends a shitton of money on its military doesn't mean the us would be the only country to help out. Every country in that agreement would have to help the NATO country that is being attacked meaning we don't need a big military force. All 30 countries act as one military force in case of an attack. You also have to think a little, Europe has lots of smaller countries. How the hell is one small country gonna be able to compete with the amount of people that live in the US? In Norway our population is around 5.3 million (2019), the US has a population of 328.2 million (2019). That's almost 62 times more than Norways population. How can we physically have a military as big and economically supported as the US?

I live in Norway(dual citizenships) and I am an ultra capitalist,the taxes here can be outrageous(the VAT tax) but there are ways(legal ways) to get around those quite easily especially for financial gains.

As a novist on economy, being a Swede I don´t think we tax the middle and low income that much. But the higher tax earners get like 50-62% income tax. Witch makes them leave the country in some ways. So I don´t know. Good topic to bring back up??!!

With the amount of money they have and how few people they have, I see easily how they can be very idealistic with the services they offer their people, but in a country nearly 100x bigger, things get way more complicated. Plus what works there might not work in other countries from a cultural or financial perspective.
Medicines are in all pharmacies, doctors are in all hospitals, teachers are in all colleges, the structure is already here. All we need to do is cut out the middleman. Why do we need insurance companies to approve or deny what an educated doctor says I need?! We ALREADY pay (out the bunghole, I might add) for Healthcare but most of it is going to insurance companies (while their ceo's get fat, happy and rich off OUR MONEY) who turn around and deny our claims if/when they can (God forbid the ceo's make a penny less than they can!)
Why do we need to pay $150 PLUS for one college text book. Why do they require a new volume every year when all they've changed is a word or two. Why do we need to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year for tuition? Considering to have a decent quality of life a college education is required!

Surprised they just skipped over the great point the guy in the grey shirt said about value added tax ( also known as sales tax in usa ) when i lived in washington i belive it was 9% but in Norway it is 25% that adds up to alot of money, its based on what you spend, however when it comes to food it's 15%, Norway also have a bunch of smaller taxes that is not included inn the income tax, it's basically taxed based on what you are doing ( driving car vs using public transportation) even though we have a lot of oil we actually sell it to other countries cheaper than what the locals can buy it for - petrol in Norway are more expensive than in america, one of the main reasons electric vehicle is so popular is because of tax relief on electrical cars, when you buy it but also they get a bunch of benefits like no road tolls, driving in the carpool lane when it's only one person in the car etc. the government want the population to be more carbon neutral, that's why we also put a tax on all plastic bottles, and if you recycle the bottles you get the tax back .. there are a lot of things Norway does differently than America, not to say that is better it's just different, some thing might be better but other things america is better at, just depends on what topic we are talking about, and it's funny how David says america is still the greatest country, wonder what he is basing that on ?
