- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is estimated to affect 60% of people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) yet is largely unknown.
In this episode of The Healthy Gut Podcast, Rebecca Coomes is joined by the Queen of SIBO, Dr. Allison Siebecker to discuss this condition.
Plus, included in this episode is a free download of our SIBO guide, giving you an easy checklist of the causes, risk factors and associated conditions.
In Episode 2 of The Healthy Gut Podcast, we discuss:
✓ Hear Dr. Allison Siebecker’s own personal journey with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
✓ Why SIBO is a chronic illness for 2/3 of all patients, and how treatment should be about management rather than cure
✓ What SIBO is, how it is caused (only a few causes) and why there are multiple risk factors that can lead to it developing
✓ The common symptoms of SIBO; both physical and mental
✓ How to test for SIBO: which ones are accurate and which ones aren’t
✓ The different treatment options: antibiotics, herbs and the Elemental Diet
✓ The different diet options and which one you should use

My SIBO is directly related with sugar absorption, so I bought enzymes that would help me to process sweets and carbohydrates. I also found out that an out of control SIBO would create so much toxins in your body that your liver would have to work extremely hard.
Drinking water with lemon or vinegar in the morning, exercising (sweating) changing diet, avoiding stress situations would help your body to get rid of toxins, therefore brain fog, acne, pain, allergies etc.
What you need to understand is that each body is a unique case and what works for others may not work for you. Listen to your body and keep a chart of any food that work or not for you. For me sugar is poison, and I believe will keep feeding this bacteria. So I avoid sugar during the week and on weekends I take my enzymes and I can enjoy something sweet but little 😀.
Good luck!
What kind of Enzymes...I like what you say. How did you come to this way of handling this? Has it helped?
Debra Stall years of dealing with SIBO, by consulting many, many doctors, reading and doing my own research. If you have issues with sugar absorption search for a gluten free sucrase enzyme supplement.
I hope this helped!
Toxins????
What is the enzyme you buy?
Did you have to do a test and which one you did?
This is a fantastic interview. The questions were organized and specific. Dr. Siebecker is extremely educated on SIBO. She explains the disease and treatments in a clear and easy to understand manner. I have been suffering from SIBO and this podcast was enlightening. I have more information to now take and discuss with my physician. Thank you so much for your time and effort. I look forward to listening to the follow-up podcasts with Dr. Siebecker.
A lot of talking but some interesting info for me too. Thx for that.
Solution for me was only clean/natural products:
- bonebroth with lots of cooked veggies and herbs;
- Keto diet (very little carbs);
- chicken / white fish / eggs;
- biological if possible;
- just a little fruit;
- no sugar;
- no grains;
- no dairy;
- no coffee;
- no medication;
- absolutely no antibiotics;
- go outdoors and work your body.
Go for natural healing for the long term. In 20 years no medical doctor in the Netherlands could/did help me. In some cases they just made it worse. Symptoms were: atritis, epilepsy, cfs, foggy mind, restless legs, toothdecay, eczema and eventually depression. I healed myself in ca. 1 year for 75%! The rest will follow coming 12 months.
Good luck! Fight for your health! Do it yourself!
So Donnie you re completely healed now? Congrats! Intermittent fasting / one meal a day works great for me too! Yoga does help me with the motility. What prokenetic do you use (I dont take drugs)? And concerning "silly"diets: how did all of us get SIBO in the first place?
@@Hypo1100 how are you now ?
Sana's World, very well. Thx. I also included The Plant Paradox. I m fixed even more. Fixing the gut can take 1 - 2 years👊🏼
I'm proud of you. I now have hope that I too can heal
all the thing you listed are SUPER keys for healing. I'd throw in fasting if you can (need to have a little fat on you first though)...but it's a game changer.
The video was informative, but also, I thank all of you who wrote comments. They helped me a lot. SIBO is a beast, like no other. I know my life will never be the same, but I’m a fighter. I’ll never give up. Whatever it takes to cure or manage by SIBO, I’m ready for the challenge. Life is to beautiful to just give up and let SIBO take it all away. Best of luck to all of us.👍👍
How are you now ?
Update?
Agree..I am NOT letting Sibo be with me forever. I will get rid of it
I’ve been extremely sick since I was born, and have been seeing doctors my whole life. I’m almost 22 now, and I was diagnosed with Sibo this year, I had to drop out of school and found it extremely difficult to work. After one round of treatment I had an allergic reaction and am starting to show symptoms again, it’s been 4 months. I appreciate this podcast ❤️
Really sorry to read how much you’ve had to put up with, Caleb.
Glad you were encouraged by this podcast. I found it very interesting too as I have a friend with Sibo and had no idea so many people suffer from it.
Praying for you to experience hope, solutions and healing in Jesus’ name. Keep me posted. God bless 😊🙏💪🌟

Goodness! I can't even begin to tell you how helpful this podcast has been. I was recently diagnosed after my breath test and feeling quite overwhelmed as I tested positive for the methane one.
Were you able to treat your methane if so how ? ❤
This went into the subject in more depth than most videos and was very well and clearly explained, so thanks for that. One thing made me sit up because I had never heard it suggested before, namely that a sign of SIBO could be not having a rumbling stomach when hungry. All my life I've had digestion issues and all my life I have been mystified by the way people say their stomach rumbles when they are hungry. Even as a child other chuildren would say that I simply ddidnt understand. My stomach only rumbles after Ive eaten or when Im feeling sick but never because Im hungry. Inever connected that with SIBO before but maybe it is related.It makes a difference that these two people are or were themselves sufferers. It creates an underlying empathy.
I think that the basic tip of reducing carbohydrates is a good one. In my exprience it does make a difference.
She is so clear and throughal
Gosh that audio was rough but the content was totally worth it!! Best SIBO related video so far. Learned a ton. Thank you!!

God bless my brother. This is him. And I cannot for the life of me get him to listen to me. He is rail thin eats and eats and eats... his doctor blames his problems on IBS. And no matter the method he still is so sick with this doctor. He said to me 2 weeks ago. I don’t feel right. I can’t get energy and I cannot gain a single pound. Breaks my heart. I don’t know where to guide him. Because he won’t listen to me. Even when I pass him videos and info... nada... just fades away in front of my eyes with every visit we have together. 😥
Just keep sending him videos, when he gets desperate enough or is ready he'll come around. Hoping for the best.
Check his liver for fats from carbs
Such people must die - without procreating.
This is interesting, because my doctor actually prescribed antacids in order to solve the problem of heartburn, gas, etc. When I suggested H-Pylori/SIBO he said the antacid would help with both..so essentially the treatment he's giving me is the cause for my symptoms?
Yes!
Allicin from Garlic (the highest potency formula I know of is Allimed)
Oregano
Berberine- found in Goldenseal, Oregon Grape, Barberry, Coptis, Phellodendron

I think SIBO is caused by low stomach acid. Digestive enzymes may help u all. Sibo may be a precursor for fatty liver aswell. I think.
I find that lemon water helps a lot with gas
yes if stomach acid is low your pancreas wont produce enzymes and your liver wont produce bile thus leading to undigested food getting into small intestines and then bloating..a good start is trying to increase stomach acid with HCL or apple cider vinegar and adding in digestive enzymes and bile salts..if this doesn't help after a few months then you most likely have sibo so then the route would be to treat that.
Absolutely possible.
I had most of the signs of SIBO and also have grade 1 fatty liver.
I consulted a traditional healer (ayurveda), and he asked me to cut off lamb meat, potato, tomato, brinjal (aubergine), pear, cucumber, eggs, and few other foods from my diet.
Within a month, I started feeling more energetic, my brain fog disappeared and I could think more clearly.
And before I went to this doctor, I had ACV with lemon juice for few days, and it worked too; but removing the foods mentioned above definitely did really good job.
@@khalidq30 Which other foods my friend? Because lately i get severe diarrhea when i eat potatoes or eggs.

My personal gut hell started around the time I had my gallbladder removed. My digestion has never been the same. Everything I eat goes right through me, I have a lot of cramping, bloating, and yucky poo poos. It's miserable and it's been like this for 10 years now.
Same here Lana, i’m now seeing a holistic doctor and he has asked me to go to SIBO & poop test. I have just completed the test & waiting on results.
@@mrjohn1968 how did it go? Did you go on treatment ?
you need bile salts like standard process cholachol--esp with fatty meals to help your liver out as gallbladder stores bile..you could also look into seeing if AF betafood by standard process may help as well.
Yucky poo poo?….wow….

I’ve been having stomach issues since I was 15 . I’m 46 now . I’ve always tried to eat right . I never smoked , don’t drink alcohol, and don’t do drugs.. just tried to stay healthy and eat healthy. Lots of this is because I’ve always had stomach issues, weight and bloating. No doctor has ever helped me . Just anti acid and prescription for ibs or gerd . Always had issues with acid reflex , really extreme And constipation . Stomach issue run in my family but no one has had positive results from doctors. 2 years ago I got to where I became allergic/ intolerant to my foods. Took out gluten, dairy, some meats, carbs etc . Try different things, it helps for a little then back to the same issues. Went to the doctor with no help , so trying to figured it out myself , like always . I’m always reading and trying to research to see if there’s any information to help this over 30 year old issue ive been battling , which just get worse over time . At one point I was fine for almost a year and lost 30 pounds . Then it hit me again and gained weight back , I get tired, migraines , nausea, bloating , runny noise, phlegm in my throat , stomach pain etc . Someone told me the other day maybe it my gallbladder . Everytime I eat I’m a mess even fuzzy thinking , get super cold , tired like my blood pressure lowers Idn just guessing . Last year for 3 months my hair just started falling out . I now have about half the amount I started off with , before it started falling out . This went on for a few months. Please let me know if anyone have any ideas. I’m exhausted with all this ! I can connect with chronic stress, sibo, imo, ibs, gerd, gallbladder disease , pots.. but not sure what’s the issues and very little test have been done for me
Have you been tested for thyroid, my sisters was not working and she became very ill. Another question, have you tried carnivore diet? Which is extreme low carb. This sometimes straightens out stuff as its an elimination diet.

So disappointed to realise that one of the top experts in the world hasn't been able to eradicate this chronic in herself. Makes me feel what chance do I have.😕
As you will have also heard in this episode, a great life is still possible with SIBO. I too have chronic and relapsing SIBO yet I feel a million times better than I used to. Some of us can’t resolve the underlying reason(s) why we develop SIBO but we can totally improve the way our body feels and how we live our lives. Don’t lose hope.
You mentioned on this video 51:36 to be exact it has maltodextrin as an ingredient in the treatment. Maltodextrin is the worst sugar substitute and is the highest on the glycemic index ! I am though curious if I do have SIBO and would check into the Herbal treatment if I do . Thanks for this video with so much information ℹ️ too!
Most excellent, thank you😊
What a great and informative podcast. I am a little confused as to whether this was in fact episode 1 or 2 or both, but I am keen to know when the next one in this series will be published. Any news on that?
I have a question about her sibo food guide and the green "low fodmap" column: are those quantities referred to one meal or a day?
I have Hashimoto’s and SIBO Methane dominant. I tried the Keto diet, but it caused my thyroid antibodies and inflammation to go up. Then I switched to AIP diet, my inflammation and antibodies came down, but my SIBO symptoms increased which caused my diagnosis of SIBO. Now I don’t know what to eat, because if I eliminate vegetables then it could cause my antibodies to go back up. It seems I can’t win. Help?
Alot of people are stuck.. The medical community has no clue whats going on.. I believe it goes beyond the gut

I am sutprised not to hear dizziness mentioned along with headaches, etc...especially immediately after eating.
It’s not a common symptom of SIBO.
I feel very dizzy when I am bloated
That's a sign of low B1 which can be caused by sibo.
Thank you. Learned a lot from that.
When I was in my 20's I was on a lot of antibiotics, and birth control pills.
I am 58 years old and three years ago was diagnosed with Malrotation. Just this week was diagnosed with SIBO. I’ve tried to do some research to see if malrotation can be a cause of SIBO. Has anyone seen or heard of this? I did have the Ladds procedure 3 years ago.
Hi Donna, yes! Any changes to the anatomy of the intestine can lead to SIBO.
I can feel my stomach bloating / swelling as I’m eating . My pants start getting tighter . Sometime it feels hard even at the top part of my stomach. Sometimes feel like my food does not want to go down !
Pro tip... shorten your intro my god we don’t need 7 minutes describing the interview just get to the damn interview!
Very informative THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! Can you recommend a testing facility or a Naturopathic Dr. specializing in SIBO in Ontatio, Canada?
Great talk. I'm a bit confused as in my understanding a healthy microbiome needs vegitables (fibre) for so many things like short chain fatty acids which inturn not only help with inflammation but act as antimicrobials. Surely this low carb diet leaving out too many vegetables for more meats is therefore not good for microbiome in the long run but only helps symptoms in short term?
The SIBO diet should only be used very short term to reduce symptoms while treatment addresses the bacterial overgrowth and the cause of the symptoms. It should not be followed for more than 6 months for risk of adverse changes to the microbiome.
@@TheHealthyGuts thanks for replying. I have one last question. I'm just over a week into herbal protocol of neem allicin and berberine for IMO but it's giving me depression. What can I do. Is it better to drop out one of these herb's or stay on all three but lower the dose?

Leaky gut. It leads to auto-immune conditions such as psoriasis.
Can you implement fermented food In your diet like Kefir or sauerkraut ?
Some people can tolerate those foods, some can’t. You’ll need to experiment and see how you do.
Hi! Thanks for a good video. I wonder how one
is thinking of the following concept regarding Sibo (I got it myself)
: pH. Should the pH in small intestine be around 8.0? Is
the function of gall bladder liquids and pancreas juices, that all are
alkalic, to get the food to get alkalic? So as long as what u
eat is more alkalic, it gets more easy to obtain that 8.0
environment in the small int...and then bad bacteria and fungi will not
be able to live? As they are designed to live only with acidic pH...
(this also requires that u move your body so that food does not stay too
long in intestine, and increase the motility as mentioned here) and that u breath good to get oxygen enough , to
intestine cells. This is inspired by Robert Young
STOP THE MUSIC WHEN YOU START TALKING
Restless leg ect is caused by mineral and vitamin deficiencies due to lack of absorption
Great interview. Dr. Siebeck mentioned surgery as a contributor to SIBO. I wonder if a colonoscopy can cause SIBO.
She’s more referring to surgery that creates an incision and leaves scar tissue. Unless the colonoscopy was very damaging, it’s unlikely to be the cause.

I think I had it for years
I’ve had Crohn’s flares and after my flares I have the worst case of ibs gi ever seen. I changed gi after 20 years and new fi didn’t believe I had sibo either. My gp was certain I did as had severe food intolerances. Well I was hospitalised 2 weeks ago for pharyngitis. And they treated me with amoxicillin IV and then amoxicillin. For the first time in 11 years my stomach is normal. Gp was surprised but impressed and asked me to record date of last dose and to keep an eye on ibs symptoms to see if return. He seems certain they will n only a matter of time. God I hope not but time will tell. I could even eat normal foods again n not in FODMAP a diet anymore. Am happy and seriously hope continues. The pelvic pain bloating feeling full all day from small serves of food. Everything. Nausea constantly. Drove me crazy and in ways was worse than Crohn’s flare. 9 weeks of EEN (elemental diet) didn’t help either. I only had that and nothing else. But my bloating would go ironically. At least 3kg and same amount of calories. now I eat about same calories 1500 and still bloating is back. However normally I react terribly to antibiotics. But this is first time I’ve been ok. Am optimistic but cautious and expanded diet. 11 years is enough of this.

How to treat Hydrogen SIBO?
I’ve got a while episode dedicated to Hydrogen dominant SIBO which in sure you’ll find interesting. ua-cam.com/video/lq87b4Fy85o/v-deo.html
Is SIBO a cause or a symptom. I personally think it is a symptom of mast cell issues…. But it just a theory. They seem to be ver related as well as IBS.
I believe it’s a symptom your gut isn’t working properly which is why bacteria has formed in the SI. But it is also the cause of a lot of symptoms that resolve once the overgrowth is treated.
Very very interesting nit picky question. Since people still say "HER" and not "ER", why do they say "ERbs" and not "HERbs"? Im probably just being ratty because this illness drives me nuts.
Americans say ‘erbs’ and Australians say ‘herbs’. Just a difference in accents!
@@TheHealthyGuts It's more than accent I should have thought, when entire letters are dropped. Accent I think of as how letter are pronounced (two ways of pronouncing "either" for example) but dropping entire letters is something else!
I may be wrong but I don't think any American said "Erb" fifty years ago. Seems to be a fashion. Do they call "Herbert" "Erbert"?? and do they say "urt" instea dof "hurt"? Some people in England have trouble pronouncing the "h"because it requires a certain effort of forcing breath out in a relatively (very slightly) more complicated way than is usual in English. "ng" at the end of the word is another one, which now I come to think of it, Americans cannot manage either. They say "goin" instead of "going" because pronoucing ng would seem to be too difficult for them.
@@MrYorickJenkins I’m not sure where the silent h came from. 🤔
@@TheHealthyGuts Nor am I, but suspect from the French or Spanish, Many romance languages drop the Latin h but what is bizarre about the American dropping of h, is that it is just for the one word "herb"-do Americans say "Erbert" for "Herbert"? I dont think so. and frankly it sounds silly. London slang drops h's too but at least consistently erbs, er car, otel, orrible etc etc. To just drop the h on one word is very strange. My guess is that it comes from the French or creol. I dont know why exactly but it annoys me quite a lot. It doesnt annoy me as much as sticking the superflous sufix"times" onto "often" though!

420 Latina Jay did u ever get brain fog with SIBO and did u do the breathing test ?
Hi Rebecca, I can't find episode 3... am I missing something?
I have heard people need to check their root canals.. can also cause sibo-
SIBO is caused by changes to the Motility or anatomy of the small intestine. A root canal has no direct link to either so wouldn’t be considered a cause for SIBO. A long term tooth infection could divert the immune system so another infection (eg food poisoning) could occur, which could ultimately lead to damage to the MMC for instance but the initial tooth infection would be considered a risk factor, not a cause.
If I suffer from depression, shell I first fix it then start to fix Sibo or together? Thank you!!
Depression and anxiety can go hand in hand with poor gut health and SIBO. Many people can experience an improvement in their depression and anxiety as their gut heals and improves. But it's important you work on the thing that feels most pressing for you.

It's a pain in the ass isn't it, to figure all this out? To start, you could get tested on your own. Get a stool test done through a mail order type of lab (unless you have something in your area). I don't know where you'd look in Montreal. I'm in the US. But you could google something like, labs to get tested for SIBO. You can also google labs to get tested for H. Pylori. You should get tested for that too anyway. And also, if you can afford it, get checked for parasites and candida.

Does Pancreatic Enzyme Deficiency cause hydrogen SIBO?
Pink Ocean Flower SIBO is caused by a motility deficiency or changes to the structure of the small intestine; both resulting in the small intestine not working correctly and allowing bacteria and archea to overgrow.
I got sibo (diagnosed through endoscopic aspiration of small intestinal fluids) after being diagnosed with hashimotos disease and epi.
Wat about blk garlic?
is she taking on new patients?
Does anyone get chest pain from the gas created by SIBO?
Yes. Chest pain that resonated in my back. I had quite some horrible experiences with that. I just had to move a lot, jump and move my body in an energetic way so that pain to go away. Because the gases weren't able to come out of me. It was horrible.
@@silviasirbu1863 Thank you! Was your chest pain also accompanied by dizziness? I assume that getting the gas up relieved your pain.

I never tested but I know that I have methane SIBO.
Hello! Thank you for all the information. I am from argentina and I really struggle with digestion, bloating and gas. I am at a point in which I feel like everything I eat cause me bloating or nausea.
Which tests should I get done?
Lactulose breath test 👍🏻
María Morena try Atrantil. It cures bloating and gas
H.pylori test furst!
God if you have the symptoms I don't even think you need to get tested just start treating yourself
Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria and you will be setting yourself up for failure. A much better option is using natural remedies including fasting. You should consider replacing your round of antibiotics with fasting.
You need to INCREASE the good bacteria. Killing them is NOT the answer. No one should be eating dairy (baby cow growth nursing fluid). Most people are lactose intolerant (whether or not they know it) because we are beyond nursing years. We are not designed to keep nursing-especially from another species. Dairy is the worst thing for your body.
do you have a source for this or did you just decide it's true based on nothing but personal experience?
@@The_Red_Pill__ It's not the lactose it's the casein. Allergies are generally caused by the proteins in foods. Raw milk is one of the best things I've found for nutrition. The dairy is bad for everyone is BS. It should be raw though. Pasteurized and homogenized milk is dead milk.
Raping cows is wrong-don’t need any personal experience there; it’s beastiality and it is digesting. Which is how it is usually done. Then removing their baby cows from the mother is wrong!!! It’s their milk! Then they get either water down milk or a substitute. Often times they get the milk of a sick cow. The males are sent for slaughter and the females are raped as soon as they can get pregnant. They are are contently kept pregnant by having some scumbag put his fist inside her vagina... and sent to the slaughter house when they can no longer produce milk; At approximately five years. They would normally live till about 20 years.
But if that’s not enough and you want the nutrition facts, go to: www.nutritionFacts.org
Dairy causes inflammation and cancer. You wouldn’t suckle a cows udder. You are far better off with flax milk, oat milk or any of the amazing nut milks.
If you really want milk from a being, then maybe start an company where you get pregnant women to produce milk for you and sell it. Isn’t that sick? Doesn’t that make you think “ewe, disgusting?” Good! Now you’re at least thinking. Think about how messed up it is to be suckling from the cows udders.
I eat a whole food plant based diet and I look, feel and am amazing!
PS: are used to have the same paradigm. I work at an organic farm and we are affiliated with a bunch of other Farms… At least three are dairy farms. Are used to do a cow share and get raw milk. Are used to think my aching and stiffness was due to aging (and old injuries); i had two joints in my hand that became visibly inflamed. I used to thing my cholesterol was fine (201) because I had high LDL. A doctor told me to get off dairy. I was reluctant and it wasn’t easy (casein is addictive), but after seeing what they do to cows and trying Oatley Batista (nothing else cut it in my coffee although I was already drinking plantbmilks), All of this is gone! Knowing that it’s a better choice for the planet is also huge for me. I continuously strive to reduce my footprint. I not only care about my health, I care about the planet and all of its earthlings.
psbjr haha!! You, like most, know that milk from an animal is bad for you (adults), but pretend not to know about 🤦🏻♂️. Stop drinking Milk, dumb ass!
You didn’t mention the herbal product by Allison Herbals for Methane? Does anyone know what it is?
Allicin the herbal product for methane plus another herb like a berberine herb
hi, thanks for the info, my mother has this weird symptom where she has "slimy spit" or saliva that she says is overpowering her. She also get's strange gas bloating in the center of her chest that she says feels like something moving in her, it gets worse anytime she eats carbs or certain foods. There is otherwise no issues with digestion. Her doctor isn't quite sure but thinks it's SIBO related, possibly an overgrowth of a certain bacteria or fungal thing, any suggestions on what this could be?
Sounds like she could have a parasites issue. I did the test and it said I didn't have them. I could feel something moving inside of me but my doctor gave me some logical reason why I was wrong. I knew I could feel something moving inside of me so I followed my gut and did a parasites cleanse and turned out I was full of them. She should try it, nothing to lose, and then do a candida cleanse, good luck.
@@micaonyx5301 yeah she already did the parasite cleanse, pretty sure now it's just candida, she has overpowering whitish "mucus" type stuff in throat and nose, but it's not normal nasal mucus. Pretty sure it's candida, what is recommended for candida cleanse anyway?

I found that the carnivore diet works wonderful!
@@radu8948 actually it does work. I was on carnivore for like 3 month and then went back to eating veggies etc.. with no issues at all. I don't see how starving a bacteria doesn't work? If something doesn't eat it dies. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has sibo or and gut, stomach issues or autoimmune disorder.
Carnivore diet has done wonders for my health

No crap! This stuff is a nightmare
U should never take an antibiotic if u have SIBO guys use garlic and Oregano
Incorrect. Rifaximin is an antibiotic which is used successfully to treat SIBO. It stays within the small intestine which is why it is so useful. It’s also a good treatment option for people who cannot tolerate the herbal protocols.
@@TheHealthyGuts yes but antibiotics have always side effects
@@summerbob7142 all treatments do. But to categorically say antibiotics should not be used for SIBO is incorrect.
