Assuming that they would still continue her story in animation, that would be Ecksteins specialty. And the live action part would continue for Rosario in the Spin-off show. It’s an even balance so both actresses are on a level playing field playing Ahsoka.

@@drewdavalos2746 indeed. Ashley Eckstein was the Ahsoka I grew up with, so of course I would want her to be more featured in other material besides Animation. I’m just looking at it realistically since Rosario has been brought in as a Live action Ahsoka. So while Rosario will take the stage as the Live action version, I am certain that Ashley will still have a presence as the animated version.
Ever since the mandalorian came out star wars has gotten back to its roots and I'm giving props to both Favrough and Filoni for that. So Disney knows and understands star wars much better why it appeals to the fans. Does it still need work? Possibly yes but the stories and what connected to the audience is much more resonating to the audience. So Disney will continue to use Eckstien in animation. Who knows; Eckstien may get a cameo in the live action Ashoka show.
Personally I would have dubbed in Conroy's voice in place of Bale's whenever Batman had to speak. The difference between Bruce Wayne's voice and that of Batman would have made it complete and we would not have to suffer from that horrible voice that Bale used.

There was nothing that man couldn’t do. He was a qualified pilot, could fence, had several heavy metal albums, trained as an opera singer, and was a founding member of the SAS, served behind German lines as an operative of the SOE (real life agents of shield), could ride a horse, speak 12 languages, and to top it all was a bloody nice guy.

The guy was blowing up German airfields, airplanes, and conducting sabotage missions that were also considered suicide missions. His work, even though he said we was not at liberty to say what he did, was very much like the American counterpart OSS. The skills he learned to execute with extreme prejudice was the same techniques they taught at Camp X, and I would not be surprised if he was there for any duration. The man also fought in the Gurkha regiment. The very same Gurkha's who repelled a Banzai charge and then charged the bastards screaming out their own battle cry "Ayo Gorkhali". Gurkha's are those badasses who would use a damn 18 inch curved blade over their rifle and whipped everyone with it. They were not allowed to pull out their Kukri's unless blood was spilled, and if they just pulled it out to show someone, they had to cut themselves to honor the tradition of spilling blood when pulling their blade. Sir Christopher Lee was/ a legend and his work alone in WW2 makes him hero status. Also, riding a horse is not something huge, a lot can do it today and back then, even more knew how to ride a horse.

I love the novel, but the audiobook is... Not great... The thing is, Ashley is a *fantastic* voice artist... But a terrible audiobook narrator, sorry. Listening to the book, it's difficult to tell when she is being the narrator, or there is Ahsoka dialogue, because they would the same. And she struggles to give other characters their own, unique voices, too. It was great hearing Ahsoka play Ahsoka for the Ahsoka book, you know? But I'd rather that someone else did the narration and she only did the dialogue, or that she was given some training/Direction by audiobook specialists.
One small detail you forgot to mention about the differences. Live action acting requires memorization of the lines. Voice acting you have the script in front of you. As somebody who’s done both, I can tell you there’s a huge difference in the performance. Also, not having the script in front of you as an aid, really makes things much more difficult if you are not an experienced and prepared on screen actor.

The animated Anakin from Clone Wars sounds nothing like the live action prequel version, but voice actor Matt Lanter has now played the character more than live action Hayden ever did. They are both Anakin to me, just as Rosario and Ashley now are both Ahsoka.

Christopher Lee was not only a fantastic actor, we was a British commando in WW2. His record shows that he was every bit a professional badass. Even Palpatine would show respect. Hell, he even made death metal Christmas albums before he died.

What isn't mentioned is the fans casted Rosario. Years ago a picture went viral that drew a concept with Rosario as Ahsoka. The pic spread so much that Rosario saw it and commented that she'd love to play Ahsoka if she had the chance. Finoni or the powers that be heard of this and agreed to actually make this happen years later! What literal - service! BEST DECISION EVA!
Rosario Dawson also really wanted to do it for years before it happened. So not only did you have someone who ticked all the boxes but would very much put the energy behind it too.
Ashley Eckstein's love for Ashoka is also a quite clever career move. She took possession of the character by making it her branding hence why the question in the video is even raised. That fans align Ashley with animated Ashoka meant that it was hard for them to replace her. So while she did a great job and made Ashoka one of the most beloved SW characters of the modern era for Lucasfilm and Filoni, she also made sure they were indebted to her performance and physical voice as the only one they would dare to contract for the role unless they wanted to upset the fans. So all-in-all pretty clever.
Very true, but I clearly remember that period & being a little embarrassed for her, that she didn't go about it with more subtleties, & if you're making this comment & 5 others agree, the chances are a lot of people caught that. Life can be very tough for actors, or any artist for that matter unfortunately.
I just don't know about this take to be honest. I'm not sure if you meant it to seem like a jab, but it sorta does. No disrespect intended, but what actor hasn't done this with a successful role? I don't even think they have a choice, especially with Disney. The "branding" could really be chocked up to standard promotion for the franchise. She also played the character for years, not just watching Asoka grow up but mature into a strong independent woman that the fans ACTUALLY love. Not just some stoic manly girl boss like the new Asoka (not at all a dig at Rosario, just a massive waste of such a good casting choice that the fans were all in on). All the benefits that would come from playing such a beloved character in one of the worlds biggest IPs would come no matter what, no cleverness needed. Also, its Disney, all they do is branding. Just my worthless two cents. Interesting discussion though.

Another thing to mention is that Ashely is 5'2 while Rosario is 5'7. That along with her age matching closer to Ahsoka's time in the Mandalorian and her acting experience is why she was better suited for Ahsoka in live-action than Ashley. I think she did an incredible job. Ashley is why the character is beloved and really shined in Clone Wars Season 7. But now it's Rosario's turn to play with the character and I'm excited to see her in more material.
I can see Ashley playing Ahsoka in the Kenobi show IF they go flashbacks and use the younger version of Ahsoka. With Hayden set to appear and the possibility of flashbacks, who knows.

5'2 could have worked for Ahsoka its not like she was tall. She was average for a female. I also don't know enough of Ashley Eckstein to know if she would be a good fit or not. I also think Rosario Dawson did fine. I was not overly impressed but I was satisfied at least. To me she was forgettable and I think it had to do more with her voice and it just didn't come out as a voice suitable for Ashoka. Edit: Honestly after looking up Ashley Eckstein I think she looks like a better Ashoka and during the clone wars she physically did the fight between her and Darth Maul. Her Height is perfectly fine which is proportioned well with her body, we wouldn't have noticed. Her face also looks like a better Ashoka than Rosario I did not like Rosario face at all as Ashoka it just did not fit Ashoka at all like what we are used too. Even with Ashley Ashoka's face would have been a mature face and would have been just fine with an older Ashoka. She doesn't have a baby face at all. After comparing both seems like Rosario was more of an in house pick that was decided outside of Dave's control. Probably had allot to do with politics which we are used to seeing with Disney. Not saying that is the reason but it could be a possibility since there were better more proven choices who didn't even get a chance to tryout for the part.
It made sense why Ashley wasn’t considered for the live action part, mostly because she doesn’t have many similarities when it comes to Ahsoka’s structure, whereas Rosario does have those similarities which helps the transition of animation to live action that much smoother. The voice is arguably the only thing that could take you out of the moment. But I personally wasn’t bothered by it since Rosario did a phenomenal job replicating Ahsoka’s mannerisms and attitude. I’m looking forward to how much further Dawson can take the character in her spin-off show.
Had I been in charge, I would have certainly auditioned Ashley for the part first to see if she could do it. If she couldn't (or she didn't look right) I would still consider having her dub the voice, strictly in an authenticity and continuity sense. While I was a bit disappointed she wasn't involved, I think Rosario Dawson did an excellent job, and looked/acted the part extremely well.
Let's also realize that Ashley herself has complimented Rosario's performance, and Rosario has paid serious respect for all the work Ashley did to establish the character. It's more than likely that without it, Ahsoka wouldn't be nearly as popular as she became, nor would she have been brought back in Rebels.
Can you point us toward some examples of this? I know I would feel a lot better knowing they are in each other’s corners and supportive of each other. I didn’t think that was true up to this point but I would love to be wrong about that.

I just hope that in animated materials ashley continues to play her part. Rosario did a fab job as Ahsoka and the change in voice didn't phase me much since some years in universe had passed, since we last saw ahsoka, so things do change.

you can tell Rosario Dawson cares and she took the time to learn Ahsoka's movements and cadences to bring them to life. i'm 100% on board with Rosario. maybe if they want to show a scene from when Ahsoka was 14, they could have Ashley step in.
Couldn't have been said better. At 1st I was disappointed despite liking Rosario Dawson very much, I had wanted Ashley to get the live action role. But it wasn't until I actually watched The Jedi episode that I came to truly appreciate Rosario Dawson's commitment to the role. As you can tell she watched every single episode of The Clone Wars to get a sense of the character imprint Ashley Eckstein left on the Ahsoka character, then drew from it when playing an older more seasoned version of the character winning me over in the end.
Apparently Rosario also insisted on Ahsoka keeping the blue eyes, when it was suggested that maybe she really didn't need to wear the blue contacts. Now I know I'm strange, but it's always bugged me at least a little when a character that's supposed to have a particular color eyes suddenly doesn't, so I really appreciate Rosario making the effort.

I wasn’t ever interested in the Ashoka character until Rosario appeared on screen. She has that, once was a hot little teenie bopper, but now is a mature and powerful, beautiful woman. She’s everything you’d hope Ashoka would become.
I love Ashley as Ahsoka’s voice, her voice is very distinctive. Even in those clips that were showed I was like that’s Ahsoka! But Ahsoka’s character is a little older and hardened by her life in hiding from the empire for all those years. I love Rosario Dawson as an actress and she was very capable of bringing Ahsoka to life. It’s like I said on another post. I’m sure it was at the forefront of Dave Filoni’s mind when they did the episode. I mean Ahsoka is Dave’s baby. He created this character and he’s worked with Ashley for all these years, so I’m sure it pained him a little for her not to get the role. Still it made sense to bring another actress onboard to do the part, plays do it all the time. One night one person plays a certain part and on another night, somebody else does it. I was just happy with how everything came together this season and wished it’d been longer.
At one point in the show I just felt that Rosario Dawson sounded like ashoka not with the sounding like ashoka but the way she talked was like ashoka and she looks like a grown up ashoka from rebels so Rosario dawson did a fantastic job to me
Honestly it doesn't make sense that one actor has to portray the same character in various media. Hayden Christiansen wasn't brought on to voice Anakin for the Clone Wars and we all learned to love the new portrayal of the character. Same with Obi-wan, Palpatine , Padme and a host of other characters that appeared in the prequels but didn't handle the voice acting. Why? Because it wasn't necessary. More than one actor can portray a character, add their own nuances to the character, especially when the character is translated into another medium. I think that's exciting. Kate Stackoff is better known as a live action actor vs a voice actor, so it makes sense why she would be brought back. She's a rather popular tv actor who's well loved in the sci-fi community so her being cast wasn't a stretch. Ashley has been amazing as a voice actor and deserves all the credit for Ashoka, but after portraying her for all these years it's more than acceptable to pass the baton and allow another actress to portray the character especially in live action. I mean I love the Justice League animated Universe but I can't see those actors playing their characters in live action. I realize Kevin Conroy did a small appearance on a CW crossover , and hearing his voice was great but I can't imagine him playing the traditional Bruce Wayne in spite of his amazing contributions to the animated version of Batman. My point is these characters are bigger than the actors that portray them, passing the baton actually adds a new layer to the method of the character.
I would've at least given Ashley the chance to screen test for live action Ahsoka, but in the end, yeah, Rosario was the better choice (and you don't hire Rosario Dawson just to dub her later).

Sadly, I have to disagree with most points on this video. Rosario didn't have any emotional range in the series and was criticized for being very stiff in all her fighting scenes. I think Rosario was only a good pick due to her looks, otherwise maybe Ashley would have been the better call because she is already so in tune with the characters mannerisms.
yeah agreed. Her Cosplay was on point, the character WAS her. And then everybody got hot about a more known actor with THE SAME SKIN COLOR play Ahsoka. Basically she was robbed, without even seemingly getting the chance to audition. I do agree Rosario despite being a lovely and great looking actress does seem very stiff in the fight scenes. Especially for someone who is supposed to be so adept at fighting.
I can't think of someone who could have done a better job of Ahsoka. Rosario did a great job. There is a difference between animated and live-action just like there is a difference between voice acting and acting, so with that in mind, it was a near-perfect portrayal.
Ashley's voice was great for a younger, more pluckey, version of her character whereas Rosario's voice and physicality is excellent as an older and more jaded Ahsoka.
I have been a massive Star Wars fan since I first watched a New Hope 35 years ago when I was six years old and my love for it has not waned since. Through all of the movies, the books and comics Ahsoka quickly became my all time favorite character in the franchise. So it was really important to me personally to see her portrayed correctly in live action. So I was upset that Ashley was not able to be the live action Ahsoka, however when I saw how Rosario embraced the character those feeling evaporated. Rosario has done an excellent job taking the animated Ahsoka we last saw and developing that character to being more mature and more haunted by her past, but still have that sarcastic sassy side we all love. I can't wait to see her in the Ahsoka TV series. To me Ashley and Rosario share that character and are both Ahsoka.

Remember that this isn't a one time deal, where Ashley could get by with her limited screen acting and be done with it. There will be a series devoted to Ahsoka, and you need a seasoned actress who's done plenty of action films to fill the role. I am very happy with Rosario's performance and I look forward to see more of her.
Being real here, the character has ethnic features, Ashley does not, plus Rosario has on screen experience in big movies and other shows, I really can't see anyone else playing the character, it was a good casting choice that the fans stood by
Her only ethnic feature is her big lips. Ahsokas eyes are blue (possible for ethnic people but more common in white people) and her nose is quite small. She is built very small which can apply to nearly every ethnicity.
??? Ahsoka is fucking orange. Not sure why TV show producers think black people are orange. They did this for starfire too, but that's a whole nother level of butchery. Anyway either way they had to use orange makeup, and all sorts of other props and shit. An orange/white/blue alien.

Ashley should be used if they do any flashbacks of the clone wars in the Ahsoka series, maybe even Rebels flashbacks. Your reasons for her not to do live action are accurate, but Rosario Dawson studied Ashley's vocal/speech patterns to play Ahsoka in live action and she got it down. I'm pretty sure I remember an interview where Ashley approved of Rosario's performance of Ahsoka in the Mandalorian season two episodes.

Ashley just wasn't enough of a physical match for Ashoka and as you point out, Rosario has the resume and the look. Hopefully though any future animated projects featuring Ahsoka will continue to be Ashley's territory.

Really? He was too old, black, and Jones was playing VADER, not Anakin. Dumbass. Not the same circumstance. Ashley could have very well played the character if she was more action-packed and had stronger facial features which she was capable of achieving though more acting roles and surgery. But there was no way Jones could de-age and re-race himself to play young Anakin which would take an act of Harry Potter magic. So your attempt to being a smart ass and making a point did not work out well for you. -_-
While I accept the fact that Ashley doesn't have the experience of Rosario with on screen acting, I have to be honest especially after the Ahsoka series Rosario never once felt like Ahsoka to me, nor did she really look like her either. She also really seemed quite wooden and the character didn't feel right even after seeing Anakin again. While some of that may be writing flaws, I really don't think it could have been worse with Ashley playing Ahsoka. So far I've never been convinced by the idea that Rosario plays Ahsoka well. She plays her character decently, but that character is only Ahsoka because we are told that she is, not because she feels like Ahsoka.
I couldn't agree more!!! Maybe it was writing or directing but Ahsoka and even Hera were much more compassionate and caring in Rebels. I think Yara Shahidi would have been a better choice with Ashley on vocals
I totally agree, Ahsoka always bested her opponents by being agile and light. I feel like Rosario is stiff and slow. Also (possibly due to bad writing) but Ahsoka in the her show completely lacks the kind of presence she had in Clone Wars and Rebels. Her character always acted as a beacon of hope and she would lift everyone up just by being there, I don’t feel that at all in the new show.

I just wanted to say Ashley's performance as Ahsoka is one of my favorite things about Clone Wars. Her performance has a lot to do with Ahsoka becoming a fan favorite at this point. The fact that it didn't start that way at all is a testament to her abilities.
For all of the people who would have “given Ashley a shot” and cast her as Asoka-I’m not sure they understand the craft and skill that a screen actor brings to a project. Disney (an extremely risk-averse company) is not going to “roll the dice” and hope that Ashley can inherit all of the physical talent and experience that the role requires. A lot of money and the credibility of the franchise is on the line. It’s not simply putting on makeup and costume and delivering the lines and it just somehow “happens”. Screen Actors are (as in Rosario’s case) often extremely proficient and professional at what they do. Not that Voice Actors aren’t equally as talented and professional: they just “have a very particular (but different) set of skills.” No professional film maker would have even considered casting James Earl Jones to PHYSICALLY play Vader at any point in the Star Wars franchise (even for the scenes where he’s ENTIRELY in the suit). Jones isn’t/wasn’t capable of the embodiment of the physical presence of Vader. But VOCALLY, there is no one better! Everything about a SCREEN actor PHYSICALLY must meld with the character: how they move, their mannerisms, facial expressions, how they fight, etc.. None of this was done by Eckstein in the Star Wars properties. She has relatively little experience as a screen actor. All of Ashoka’s onscreen performance was done by a team of ANIMATORS. Overlooking how much this small army of people who were NOT Eckstein contributed to the performance of Ashoka is kind of a “diss” to the animators. Rosario Dawson was able to achieve a faithful and wonderful PHYSICAL interpretation of what all of animators did-ALL BY HERSELF: no animators required (okay, maybe a LITTLE help from animators and stunt doubles during the acrobatic and dangerous parts of the fight scenes. But everyone this side of Tom Cruise (who does his own stunts) briefly uses digital doubles and stunt doubles.). Dawson’s ability to masterfully perform Ashoka PHYSICALLY is a testimony to her talent as a screen actor. Eckstein does an SUPERIOR job with the VOICE of Ashoka. Rosario does an equally SUPERIOR job with the physical being of Ashoka. Two different interpretation of the same character. As far as “dubbing” in Ashley’s voice: get REAL people! First off, that would be INCREDIBLY time consuming and expensive (Automated Dialogue Replacement always is...). And doing so would be a discredit to ECKSTEIN. She’d have ATTEMPT to tailor HER Ashoka to fit Rosario’s physical performance and mannerisms. The “voice” no longer entirely ASHLEY’s any more-she’d have to fit it into the very constructive box of Dawson’s physical performance. Eckstein would be taking cues from Rosario. Western animation (I.e. Ashley’s experience) doesn’t even work like this. FIRST, they record the voices THEN then animators animate the character, incorporating the work of the voice actor in their work. Highly likely that a Eckstein/Dawson meld on Ashoka would produce an eerie mismatch of voice to image, even if perfectly synchronized (which would take an eternity and be very expensive, once again). I’m conclusion: GROW UP, folks: animation and live action are TWO DIFFERENT mediums, requiring TWO UNIQUE (and sometimes marginally overlapping) set of skills. Appreciate both actors for the excellent interpretation of the character we all love and know that they are equally valid!
Ashley Eckstein eye brows just don't work. I think that Rosario looks like her enough that she passes. Also, Rosario Dawson has the physical body shape to pull it off. So I think it is a good choice to recast Ahsoka.
Ashoka is basically a black girl. Ashley clearly don't look black. Rosario has those awesome juicy lips and is a great actor. She looks perfect for the part, how a older Ashoka should look.

Dawson looks like as you would expect for the most part. The only thing would be a wider face, but you are unlikely going to find a perfect person to the cartoon. Rosario Dawson could almost pass as mixed. So I would be thinking the casting to be more of a thought of Lucas and his wife having a child playing a character even though Dawson isn't their child. It is like a what if. Also, as a fan I have always thought Rosario Dawson to be absolutely beautiful. I don't see race as I see a beautiful woman who can act. She can pretty much take any role and be fine with me. My point was the cartoon voice actress doesn't look like her if you apply the make up. Her forehead and eyebrows isn't right. I saw it right away and was like nope and her body shape also doesn't look right. Where Dawson has all of that. I don't normally make a big deal about a skin color. I see her beauty and acting.
They should have at least brought in Ashley to do a screen test to see if she could pull it off. Dawson did a fine acting job, but without the voice she just didn't feel like Ahsoka to me.
Well, Ashley doesn't look like Ahsoka either. Her live-action acting experience is limited to romance dramas and comedies (had to look it up) unlike Dawson has with action movies. Being a Prequels guy, I was annoyed the first time I heard animated Anakin, Ben and Rex/the clones not sounding like their movie counterparts. I got over it a few episodes later. You'll get used to it once Rosario's Ahsoka series starts like I did with the animated series. If not, then that's your problem!

Ashley was phenomenal in the animated series & Rosario is a lock for her live action portrayal of an adult Ahsoka. To learn that Ahsoka Tano will have a dedicated series is the cherry on top!
Rosario Dawson first off, looks more like Ahsoka, in my humble opinion. Second she portrays Ahsoka like shes been through it, and she has. Ahsoka had a rough life, and she pulls it off incredibly. Beyond that the way she presents herself on screen is mysterious and elegent like how Old Ben was in the OG Trilogy. Rosario is THE perfect Ahsoka.
Casting has been one of the Mandalorian's strengths. So many of characters have been played by the exactly correct performer its amazing. Katee Sackhoff also has the advantage that her character wears a helmet for most action sequences so she can be easily replaced by a stunt or body double for the scene - and because her mouth is covered, dialogue can be easily dubbed.
Well all that about Katee Sackhoff is moot though. Just turned out with her the voice actor is an accomplished live action actor and she already played some physically demanding roles. Makes me wonder if Dave Filoni already thought about casting her as live action Bo Katan way back in Clone Wars haha
Katee Sackoff in the Mandalorian was not dubbed over, and she didn't need to be. She was the voice actress for the character in the animated shows, not just the live action. The look of the animated character was based on the voice actress, so she was able to reprise her role in live action.
I think Rosario Dawson was a great choice for Ashoka, it was a shame Ashley didn’t return but I hope we can see her come back if Ashoka is ever in an animated series again
I'm a bit late to the party... any way, the first time I heard rumors of a live action Ahsoka Tano my heart and mind just said Rosario Dawson. For me she was the perfect fit, Rosario has very similar facial features to Ahsoka especially from Clone Wars season 1 to 7, the older Ahsoka in Rebels did not resemble her younger self or Rosario's facial features, well that's my opinion. :D But as many have said Ashley is Ahsoka too, but in the anime world, and no one can take that from her.
I think some people tend to forget that almost all the characters in the animated shows look and sound different than their live action counterparts. So we really shouldn’t expect any different here.

Ahsoka started off in clome wars, no reason to completely kick Ashley out if the show. Also the voice actor for Bo kotan, another clome wars orignal, is the same actor who portrayed her in mando. Disney didn't like Ashley for whatever reason and butchered her. I hate them

Ok, I can see this is confusing the hell out of some folks, but it was just a jokey reference to plot holes & inconsistencies that are created whenever there are changes made to Star Wars canon - for eg. how in ANH, Obi-Wan has obviously never met R2 before, he has no memory of him because they never met prior to the events of that movie - many years later, the prequels came out, & now there's R2 _with_ Obi-Wan, several times - even in ROTS he's talking to him & *calling him by name!* - yet now viewed in chronological order, an older Kenobi seems to have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of this little droid, - to say nothing of 3-PO!! Same thing with Ahsoka, a major character, added to canon _after_ the prequels had been made, but in those movies, Anakin clearly never had an apprentice, there was not even the slightest reference to her or mention of him training anyone, because in the narrative of the films, the Jedi order don't fully trust him & he's deemed to be too unstable & is still learning himself anyway - teaching a padawan is the _last_ thing they would be having him do in those films - Once again, some years later The Clone Wars tv show comes along, set between the events of eps 2 & 3 - however now, Anakin is assigned a padawan, Ahsoka - by Yoda & Obi-Wan no less!, & she's established as a mainstream character with as much importance as Anakin or Obi-Wan themselves. And that's the gag, in the Obi-Wan tv show , Ewan McGregors exiled Jedi Master (hypothetically) meets Ahsoka - but doesn't recognize her because _his_ movie version of Obi-Wan never encountered her. Just as Alec Guinness' Obi-Wan is clueless about R2. y'see?
I think Rosario Dawson is the perfect casting for AhSoka on screen, but I have so much respect for Ashley for bringing that character to life in her Animated form. By comparison, Mark Hamill does some amazing voice acting one of those as Joker in the animated Batman series. I could never see him as Joker on screen, but he IS the joker in his animated form.

They are different formats, different shows, much different ages of the character. Ashley is perfect for the younger, voice-acting version, Rosario is perfect for an older, live action interpretation. They're both great, imo!
I love the action sequences brought about by light saber battles. And Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka is darn just too slow. She sure looks the part. But she is not Ahsoka.
Simple explanation is Marketing, Rosario Dawson is a far more mainstream actress, while Ahsoka is popular in the fandom, she still isn't as well known in the mainstream since she doesn't appear in the live action movies so having a bigger name actress portray her gives her that extra bump (which is extra important since she is getting her own show). Ashley's appearance was fine just looking at her cosplay and a professional make-up team would probably make it look even more accurate. Her physicality as an actress is something that can be worked on, plenty of actors go and train for roles, even Rosario Dawson probably went and got some training for the fight scenes she had to do. Issues such as age can easily be hand-waved as simply aging differences between humans and Togrutas (this is a show with a 50 year old toddler after all).

In most fans’ headcanon, Ahsoka is still 6’1 in The Mandalorian).

Most people are forgetting that actors loop their lines all the time so having Ashley dub Rosario's line wouldn't be a problem regardless of how much dialog was involved. Also, the animated Anakin looks nothing like Hayden so Ashley not looking like Ahsoka is irrelevant because it's called ACTING not finding a picture perfect duplicate. Also, Ahsoka wasn't tall and Ashley's height is about average and with the head appliance she would've been taller especially when wearing boots. I have no problem with Rosario playing Ahsoka because she was hired to play a part, pure and simple. We don't even know if Ashley tried for the part or not.

I find it interesting around the time that the Rosario Dawson rumors started to circulate, Eckstein made a post on instagram that sounded a lot like she was retiring from playing the character over the fact that she didn't get to play the role in live action like she had hoped to. I genuinely hope we haven't lost Eckstein in the role to Disney execs and Fan demands regarding the casting, because out of all those things, that would be quite a tragedy. Especially since both portrayals are strong, Eckstein's and Dawson's are equally good (although I will forever be biased in favor of Eckstein doing a live action version ever since I saw the cosplay she did for the Her Universe brand). Having Eckstein continue to voice animated versions of Ahsoka would be a nice with Rosario as a live action compliment to that.
If i was going to do a live action show set in the clone wars, i think I'd at least audition Ashley. But for Ashoka at this point on the time line, Rosario was a good choice.

There’s also a chance that she just didn’t want to. She’s getting older, is probably already set for life, and these tv shoots can be brutal. Also like you said, she probably wants to avoid the hate train if she messed up, she was already on the receiving end in 2008 Though I must say, Rosario Dawson also looks exactly like ahsoka. It's also worth noting that Maul never had Ray's voice, he was always dubbed. Ray was cast because of his experience in martial arts, not necessarily because he was a good actor, but also imagine hearing his voice come out of Maul's terrifying design, it would be comical to say the least. I really do wonder what George's initial ideas for a Sequel Trilogy staring Maul would have been like considering that he would have had all his lines dubbed over. It's not really impossible, actors do it all the time because most movies these days require ADR, Automated Dialog Replacement, where actors come in and rerecord their lines as they watch the scenes because the sets were too loud or have the wrong atmosphere for vocals to be picked up on set cleanly. Many movies have essentially 90% of the dialog you hear in addition to grunts and other vocal noises recorded in post-production. However, this is probably easier if you were on set because you can return back to that performance and do it justice in the recording. I think another issue to bring up beyond just physicality and skill between Ashley and Rosario is sadly the cancel culture. Can you imagine the headlines when people caught wind that little white Ashley was dubbing over the lines of a woman of color, despite the fact that the character is an orange alien species? That's just a disaster waiting to happen. So I don't think it's so much a matter of it being impossible or even necessarily being too costly to do a dub, it's more a matter of allowing Rosario to fully embrace the character and the fans doing so, too, than trying to get all the little minute details that could also be Lucasfilm's undoing if interpreted the wrong way. The preexisting fans would have probably been okay with it, but the new fans, those that have only seen Mandalorian would have seen this character, whom they know is being played by Rosario Dawson, but not sounding like her, and then researching to see that it was only done to keep this odd bit of continuity when it's still the same character and dialog Ahsoka would have spoken regardless of what medium: Live-action, animated, or even in a book or comic. So long as the character is still the same character, it's not that big a deal if the voices are different. I love Matt Lanter's Anakin, and to be honest, Hayden now sounds really weird, but I'm not asking for a dub over his lines. Although... there are amazing things in the world of AI voicing, you could collect enough samples of every character and then put their voices over anyone else's lines, so one day, somebody may have an edit of Rosario with Ashley's voice and it could be pretty neat, but it's not what we got, nor should it have been.
I respectfully disagree with a couple things in this assessment. The look: It’s only because of the clone wars animation style of using exaggerated polygons for face shapes and body features that Ahsoka’s character model does not resemble Ashley as much as it could. Ahsoka’s features were actually closely modeled after Ashley originally in clone wars. She looks more like the clone wars version than Rosario does. The rebels look was a noticeable departure from the way she should have looked. Again, animation style changing is what made her look so different. Using the same exact facial structures and shapes made her look super weird with the different texturing they were using in rebels so it made her look way different but if you adapted the original look to the screen Ashley is super close. Ashley’s experience: The idea that Ashley was not equipped for the screen adaptation, while I understand the argument, is ultimately not a major issue. Plenty of relatively “inexperienced” screen actors began superstar careers with a huge bang on the screen after a few minor roles much like Ashley. Examples like Steve Carrell, Emma Watson, John Krasinski, Millie Bobbie Brown, Jennifer Lawrence are all examples of people who were legit “nobodies” in Hollywood until the thing you first remember them from. The truth is that from the outside it may seem highly significant that an actor be experienced on screen and “have chops” as they say but the reality is that the casting director picks who they think will accomplish the goal of whoever is in charge of paying them. And when you work with Disney, lore integrity, accuracy, compelling storytelling, and being in touch with the audience that is fanatically loyal to the source material, ALL take a back seat to the almighty dollar. The fact is that Disney is a merchandising and media company not a storytelling company like they used to be. So they ordered an actress who was the most likely to be liked by the most amount of people so that everyone would watch and buy. Rosario vs Ashley: Lastly, Rosario and Ashley both would have face obstacles in the live action version of the character. Ashley’s would have been adapting to the screen for an extended role. As we have said it’s not actually a huge obstacle once the casting director has chosen you. You’d get all the coaching, time, and resources you’d need to do it justice, if that was the goal (more about that in a moment). However that fact that Ashley IS Ahsoka, would have heavily guided and aided the process and made any learning curve much more manageable because she knows the character inside and out. Rosario’s obstacle was Ashley’s exact strength. Unfortunately, the entire time I watched the recent Ahsoka series I just kept on thinking “I don’t ever remember Ahsoka being so inexpressive and aloof” she was the opposite of that. She felt deeply for other people much like her master did, but she had learned how to temper her deeply felt emotions with a little self control. Rosario lacked the emotional depth and vulnerability of the character in almost every scene. I’m not saying Rosario is bad, she just is not like the character of Ahsoka. She’s a different Ahsoka that is very far from the original personality and emotional connection of Ashely’s version. I think she failed to understand the character’s personality. She used only the emotional context of Ahsoka’s most difficult times to develop the character and forgot about the wise cracking, lightly sarcastic, and animated side of the character. Which is only part of Ahsoka. That’s why every thing she said felt so dry. The painful truth is that Filoni and Faveau allowed Disney to move forward without Ashley for financial reasons and also personal reasons which I won’t go into. It was an unfortunate decision and the character suffered for it.

Also Rosario Dawson loved the character and even made tweets and comments about wanting to play her in Live Action, pair this with the fact Ashoka is her kid's favorite character as they watched the clone wars show together, this brings a real level of heart to the role that i think we can agree make her parts the highlight of this and any episode she shows up in.

Rosario Dawson did a pretty good job as Ahsoka, and it's not given to everyone, as this character is amazing. But man, Ashley still is gorgeous, has a magnificent voice, proved she can be physically a convincing Ahsoka, and she did so well at voicing the character... so yeah, i think i would at least have considered her as first choice, and have given her a try...

Ever since the mandalorian came out star wars has gotten back to its roots and I'm giving props to both Favrough and Filoni for that. So Disney knows and understands star wars much better why it appeals to the fans. Does it still need work? Possibly yes but the stories and what connected to the audience is much more resonating to the audience. So Disney will continue to use Eckstien in animation. Who knows; Eckstien may get a cameo in the live action Ashoka show.

He was a qualified pilot, could fence, had several heavy metal albums, trained as an opera singer, and was a founding member of the SAS, served behind German lines as an operative of the SOE (real life agents of shield), could ride a horse, speak 12 languages, and to top it all was a bloody nice guy.
Except he didn't actually do any of the swordfighting. He just couldn't do it physically and was body-doubled.

The guy was blowing up German airfields, airplanes, and conducting sabotage missions that were also considered suicide missions. His work, even though he said we was not at liberty to say what he did, was very much like the American counterpart OSS. The skills he learned to execute with extreme prejudice was the same techniques they taught at Camp X, and I would not be surprised if he was there for any duration. The man also fought in the Gurkha regiment. The very same Gurkha's who repelled a Banzai charge and then charged the bastards screaming out their own battle cry "Ayo Gorkhali". Gurkha's are those badasses who would use a damn 18 inch curved blade over their rifle and whipped everyone with it. They were not allowed to pull out their Kukri's unless blood was spilled, and if they just pulled it out to show someone, they had to cut themselves to honor the tradition of spilling blood when pulling their blade. Sir Christopher Lee was/ a legend and his work alone in WW2 makes him hero status. Also, riding a horse is not something huge, a lot can do it today and back then, even more knew how to ride a horse.
It would be awesome for Ashley to have some sort of cameo in the Disney Ahsoka series. I can't see them not doing that somehow.

The Ahsoka novel was terrible. There was a chance for a good story there, but that author is trash.
I love the novel, but the audiobook is... Not great... The thing is, Ashley is a *fantastic* voice artist... But a terrible audiobook narrator, sorry. Listening to the book, it's difficult to tell when she is being the narrator, or there is Ahsoka dialogue, because they would the same. And she struggles to give other characters their own, unique voices, too. It was great hearing Ahsoka play Ahsoka for the Ahsoka book, you know? But I'd rather that someone else did the narration and she only did the dialogue, or that she was given some training/Direction by audiobook specialists.
Ashley, Rosario, love them both. We are lucky star wars fans to have them both.

One small detail you forgot to mention about the differences. Live action acting requires memorization of the lines. Voice acting you have the script in front of you. As somebody who’s done both, I can tell you there’s a huge difference in the performance. Also, not having the script in front of you as an aid, really makes things much more difficult if you are not an experienced and prepared on screen actor.

The animated Anakin from Clone Wars sounds nothing like the live action prequel version, but voice actor Matt Lanter has now played the character more than live action Hayden ever did. They are both Anakin to me, just as Rosario and Ashley now are both Ahsoka.

Ashley Eckstein's love for Ashoka is also a quite clever career move. She took possession of the character by making it her branding hence why the question in the video is even raised. That fans align Ashley with animated Ashoka meant that it was hard for them to replace her. So while she did a great job and made Ashoka one of the most beloved SW characters of the modern era for Lucasfilm and Filoni, she also made sure they were indebted to her performance and physical voice as the only one they would dare to contract for the role unless they wanted to upset the fans. So all-in-all pretty clever.
Very true, but I clearly remember that period & being a little embarrassed for her, that she didn't go about it with more subtleties, & if you're making this comment & 5 others agree, the chances are a lot of people caught that. Life can be very tough for actors, or any artist for that matter unfortunately.

I just don't know about this take to be honest. I'm not sure if you meant it to seem like a jab, but it sorta does. No disrespect intended, but what actor hasn't done this with a successful role? I don't even think they have a choice, especially with Disney. The "branding" could really be chocked up to standard promotion for the franchise. She also played the character for years, not just watching Asoka grow up but mature into a strong independent woman that the fans ACTUALLY love. Not just some stoic manly girl boss like the new Asoka (not at all a dig at Rosario, just a massive waste of such a good casting choice that the fans were all in on). All the benefits that would come from playing such a beloved character in one of the worlds biggest IPs would come no matter what, no cleverness needed. Also, its Disney, all they do is branding. Just my worthless two cents. Interesting discussion though.

Another thing to mention is that Ashely is 5'2 while Rosario is 5'7. That along with her age matching closer to Ahsoka's time in the Mandalorian and her acting experience is why she was better suited for Ahsoka in live-action than Ashley. I think she did an incredible job. Ashley is why the character is beloved and really shined in Clone Wars Season 7. But now it's Rosario's turn to play with the character and I'm excited to see her in more material.
I can see Ashley playing Ahsoka in the Kenobi show IF they go flashbacks and use the younger version of Ahsoka. With Hayden set to appear and the possibility of flashbacks, who knows.

5'2 could have worked for Ahsoka its not like she was tall. She was average for a female. I also don't know enough of Ashley Eckstein to know if she would be a good fit or not. I also think Rosario Dawson did fine. I was not overly impressed but I was satisfied at least. To me she was forgettable and I think it had to do more with her voice and it just didn't come out as a voice suitable for Ashoka.
Edit: Honestly after looking up Ashley Eckstein I think she looks like a better Ashoka and during the clone wars she physically did the fight between her and Darth Maul. Her Height is perfectly fine which is proportioned well with her body, we wouldn't have noticed. Her face also looks like a better Ashoka than Rosario I did not like Rosario face at all as Ashoka it just did not fit Ashoka at all like what we are used too. Even with Ashley Ashoka's face would have been a mature face and would have been just fine with an older Ashoka. She doesn't have a baby face at all. After comparing both seems like Rosario was more of an in house pick that was decided outside of Dave's control. Probably had allot to do with politics which we are used to seeing with Disney. Not saying that is the reason but it could be a possibility since there were better more proven choices who didn't even get a chance to tryout for the part.
It made sense why Ashley wasn’t considered for the live action part, mostly because she doesn’t have many similarities when it comes to Ahsoka’s structure, whereas Rosario does have those similarities which helps the transition of animation to live action that much smoother.
The voice is arguably the only thing that could take you out of the moment. But I personally wasn’t bothered by it since Rosario did a phenomenal job replicating Ahsoka’s mannerisms and attitude.
I’m looking forward to how much further Dawson can take the character in her spin-off show.

Had I been in charge, I would have certainly auditioned Ashley for the part first to see if she could do it. If she couldn't (or she didn't look right) I would still consider having her dub the voice, strictly in an authenticity and continuity sense.
While I was a bit disappointed she wasn't involved, I think Rosario Dawson did an excellent job, and looked/acted the part extremely well.

Let's also realize that Ashley herself has complimented Rosario's performance, and Rosario has paid serious respect for all the work Ashley did to establish the character. It's more than likely that without it, Ahsoka wouldn't be nearly as popular as she became, nor would she have been brought back in Rebels.
Can you point us toward some examples of this? I know I would feel a lot better knowing they are in each other’s corners and supportive of each other. I didn’t think that was true up to this point but I would love to be wrong about that.

I just hope that in animated materials ashley continues to play her part. Rosario did a fab job as Ahsoka and the change in voice didn't phase me much since some years in universe had passed, since we last saw ahsoka, so things do change.

Christopher Lee was a swordsman, he didn't need to learn much
Mr. Lee is still 1 of my favorite SW character. He just made sense to me. My favorite character to play with on Battle Front as well.
He also said in an interview on the special features Blu-ray discs that a stuntman did all his swordfight scenes.

you can tell Rosario Dawson cares and she took the time to learn Ahsoka's movements and cadences to bring them to life. i'm 100% on board with Rosario. maybe if they want to show a scene from when Ahsoka was 14, they could have Ashley step in.
Couldn't have been said better. At 1st I was disappointed despite liking Rosario Dawson very much, I had wanted Ashley to get the live action role. But it wasn't until I actually watched The Jedi episode that I came to truly appreciate Rosario Dawson's commitment to the role. As you can tell she watched every single episode of The Clone Wars to get a sense of the character imprint Ashley Eckstein left on the Ahsoka character, then drew from it when playing an older more seasoned version of the character winning me over in the end.
I noticed she did try to match speaking style.
Apparently Rosario also insisted on Ahsoka keeping the blue eyes, when it was suggested that maybe she really didn't need to wear the blue contacts.
Now I know I'm strange, but it's always bugged me at least a little when a character that's supposed to have a particular color eyes suddenly doesn't, so I really appreciate Rosario making the effort.

I wasn’t ever interested in the Ashoka character until Rosario appeared on screen. She has that, once was a hot little teenie bopper, but now is a mature and powerful, beautiful woman. She’s everything you’d hope Ashoka would become.
Exactly when I think of the character she fits it in every possible way.
I love Ashley as Ahsoka’s voice, her voice is very distinctive. Even in those clips that were showed I was like that’s Ahsoka! But Ahsoka’s character is a little older and hardened by her life in hiding from the empire for all those years. I love Rosario Dawson as an actress and she was very capable of bringing Ahsoka to life. It’s like I said on another post. I’m sure it was at the forefront of Dave Filoni’s mind when they did the episode. I mean Ahsoka is Dave’s baby. He created this character and he’s worked with Ashley for all these years, so I’m sure it pained him a little for her not to get the role. Still it made sense to bring another actress onboard to do the part, plays do it all the time. One night one person plays a certain part and on another night, somebody else does it. I was just happy with how everything came together this season and wished it’d been longer.
At one point in the show I just felt that Rosario Dawson sounded like ashoka not with the sounding like ashoka but the way she talked was like ashoka and she looks like a grown up ashoka from rebels so Rosario dawson did a fantastic job to me

Honestly it doesn't make sense that one actor has to portray the same character in various media. Hayden Christiansen wasn't brought on to voice Anakin for the Clone Wars and we all learned to love the new portrayal of the character. Same with Obi-wan, Palpatine , Padme and a host of other characters that appeared in the prequels but didn't handle the voice acting. Why? Because it wasn't necessary. More than one actor can portray a character, add their own nuances to the character, especially when the character is translated into another medium. I think that's exciting. Kate Stackoff is better known as a live action actor vs a voice actor, so it makes sense why she would be brought back. She's a rather popular tv actor who's well loved in the sci-fi community so her being cast wasn't a stretch. Ashley has been amazing as a voice actor and deserves all the credit for Ashoka, but after portraying her for all these years it's more than acceptable to pass the baton and allow another actress to portray the character especially in live action. I mean I love the Justice League animated Universe but I can't see those actors playing their characters in live action. I realize Kevin Conroy did a small appearance on a CW crossover , and hearing his voice was great but I can't imagine him playing the traditional Bruce Wayne in spite of his amazing contributions to the animated version of Batman. My point is these characters are bigger than the actors that portray them, passing the baton actually adds a new layer to the method of the character.

Sadly, I have to disagree with most points on this video. Rosario didn't have any emotional range in the series and was criticized for being very stiff in all her fighting scenes. I think Rosario was only a good pick due to her looks, otherwise maybe Ashley would have been the better call because she is already so in tune with the characters mannerisms.
yeah agreed. Her Cosplay was on point, the character WAS her. And then everybody got hot about a more known actor with THE SAME SKIN COLOR play Ahsoka. Basically she was robbed, without even seemingly getting the chance to audition. I do agree Rosario despite being a lovely and great looking actress does seem very stiff in the fight scenes. Especially for someone who is supposed to be so adept at fighting.

Ashley's voice was great for a younger, more pluckey, version of her character whereas Rosario's voice and physicality is excellent as an older and more jaded Ahsoka.

I have been a massive Star Wars fan since I first watched a New Hope 35 years ago when I was six years old and my love for it has not waned since. Through all of the movies, the books and comics Ahsoka quickly became my all time favorite character in the franchise. So it was really important to me personally to see her portrayed correctly in live action. So I was upset that Ashley was not able to be the live action Ahsoka, however when I saw how Rosario embraced the character those feeling evaporated. Rosario has done an excellent job taking the animated Ahsoka we last saw and developing that character to being more mature and more haunted by her past, but still have that sarcastic sassy side we all love. I can't wait to see her in the Ahsoka TV series. To me Ashley and Rosario share that character and are both Ahsoka.

Remember that this isn't a one time deal, where Ashley could get by with her limited screen acting and be done with it. There will be a series devoted to Ahsoka, and you need a seasoned actress who's done plenty of action films to fill the role. I am very happy with Rosario's performance and I look forward to see more of her.

Her only ethnic feature is her big lips. Ahsokas eyes are blue (possible for ethnic people but more common in white people) and her nose is quite small. She is built very small which can apply to nearly every ethnicity.

Ashley should be used if they do any flashbacks of the clone wars in the Ahsoka series, maybe even Rebels flashbacks. Your reasons for her not to do live action are accurate, but Rosario Dawson studied Ashley's vocal/speech patterns to play Ahsoka in live action and she got it down. I'm pretty sure I remember an interview where Ashley approved of Rosario's performance of Ahsoka in the Mandalorian season two episodes.
They sound nothing alike to me. There were several spots I noticed her intonation was not like Ahsoka that could have easily been done.

While I accept the fact that Ashley doesn't have the experience of Rosario with on screen acting, I have to be honest especially after the Ahsoka series Rosario never once felt like Ahsoka to me, nor did she really look like her either. She also really seemed quite wooden and the character didn't feel right even after seeing Anakin again. While some of that may be writing flaws, I really don't think it could have been worse with Ashley playing Ahsoka. So far I've never been convinced by the idea that Rosario plays Ahsoka well. She plays her character decently, but that character is only Ahsoka because we are told that she is, not because she feels like Ahsoka.
I couldn't agree more!!! Maybe it was writing or directing but Ahsoka and even Hera were much more compassionate and caring in Rebels. I think Yara Shahidi would have been a better choice with Ashley on vocals
I totally agree, Ahsoka always bested her opponents by being agile and light. I feel like Rosario is stiff and slow. Also (possibly due to bad writing) but Ahsoka in the her show completely lacks the kind of presence she had in Clone Wars and Rebels. Her character always acted as a beacon of hope and she would lift everyone up just by being there, I don’t feel that at all in the new show.

I just wanted to say Ashley's performance as Ahsoka is one of my favorite things about Clone Wars. Her performance has a lot to do with Ahsoka becoming a fan favorite at this point. The fact that it didn't start that way at all is a testament to her abilities.

Eckstein doesn't have the experience for a physical role like this. Simple as that. Wasn't a question in my mind that Dawson was right for the role.
For all of the people who would have “given Ashley a shot” and cast her as Asoka-I’m not sure they understand the craft and skill that a screen actor brings to a project. Disney (an extremely risk-averse company) is not going to “roll the dice” and hope that Ashley can inherit all of the physical talent and experience that the role requires. A lot of money and the credibility of the franchise is on the line. It’s not simply putting on makeup and costume and delivering the lines and it just somehow “happens”.
Screen Actors are (as in Rosario’s case) often extremely proficient and professional at what they do. Not that Voice Actors aren’t equally as talented and professional: they just “have a very particular (but different) set of skills.” No professional film maker would have even considered casting James Earl Jones to PHYSICALLY play Vader at any point in the Star Wars franchise (even for the scenes where he’s ENTIRELY in the suit). Jones isn’t/wasn’t capable of the embodiment of the physical presence of Vader. But VOCALLY, there is no one better!
Everything about a SCREEN actor PHYSICALLY must meld with the character: how they move, their mannerisms, facial expressions, how they fight, etc.. None of this was done by Eckstein in the Star Wars properties. She has relatively little experience as a screen actor. All of Ashoka’s onscreen performance was done by a team of ANIMATORS. Overlooking how much this small army of people who were NOT Eckstein contributed to the performance of Ashoka is kind of a “diss” to the animators.
Rosario Dawson was able to achieve a faithful and wonderful PHYSICAL interpretation of what all of animators did-ALL BY HERSELF: no animators required (okay, maybe a LITTLE help from animators and stunt doubles during the acrobatic and dangerous parts of the fight scenes. But everyone this side of Tom Cruise (who does his own stunts) briefly uses digital doubles and stunt doubles.).
Dawson’s ability to masterfully perform Ashoka PHYSICALLY is a testimony to her talent as a screen actor. Eckstein does an SUPERIOR job with the VOICE of Ashoka. Rosario does an equally SUPERIOR job with the physical being of Ashoka. Two different interpretation of the same character.
As far as “dubbing” in Ashley’s voice: get REAL people! First off, that would be INCREDIBLY time consuming and expensive (Automated Dialogue Replacement always is...). And doing so would be a discredit to ECKSTEIN. She’d have ATTEMPT to tailor HER Ashoka to fit Rosario’s physical performance and mannerisms. The “voice” no longer entirely ASHLEY’s any more-she’d have to fit it into the very constructive box of Dawson’s physical performance. Eckstein would be taking cues from Rosario. Western animation (I.e. Ashley’s experience) doesn’t even work like this. FIRST, they record the voices THEN then animators animate the character, incorporating the work of the voice actor in their work. Highly likely that a Eckstein/Dawson meld on Ashoka would produce an eerie mismatch of voice to image, even if perfectly synchronized (which would take an eternity and be very expensive, once again).
I’m conclusion: GROW UP, folks: animation and live action are TWO DIFFERENT mediums, requiring TWO UNIQUE (and sometimes marginally overlapping) set of skills. Appreciate both actors for the excellent interpretation of the character we all love and know that they are equally valid!

Ashley Eckstein eye brows just don't work. I think that Rosario looks like her enough that she passes. Also, Rosario Dawson has the physical body shape to pull it off. So I think it is a good choice to recast Ahsoka.
Ashoka is basically a black girl. Ashley clearly don't look black. Rosario has those awesome juicy lips and is a great actor. She looks perfect for the part, how a older Ashoka should look.

Dawson looks like as you would expect for the most part. The only thing would be a wider face, but you are unlikely going to find a perfect person to the cartoon.
Rosario Dawson could almost pass as mixed. So I would be thinking the casting to be more of a thought of Lucas and his wife having a child playing a character even though Dawson isn't their child. It is like a what if.
Also, as a fan I have always thought Rosario Dawson to be absolutely beautiful. I don't see race as I see a beautiful woman who can act. She can pretty much take any role and be fine with me. My point was the cartoon voice actress doesn't look like her if you apply the make up. Her forehead and eyebrows isn't right. Being a Prequels guy, I was annoyed the first time I heard animated Anakin, Ben and Rex/the clones not sounding like their movie counterparts. I got over it a few episodes later.
You'll get used to it once Rosario's Ahsoka series starts like I did with the animated series. If not, then that's your problem!

Rosario Dawson first off, looks more like Ahsoka, in my humble opinion. Second she portrays Ahsoka like shes been through it, and she has. Ahsoka had a rough life, and she pulls it off incredibly. Beyond that the way she presents herself on screen is mysterious and elegent like how Old Ben was in the OG Trilogy. Rosario is THE perfect Ahsoka.

Casting has been one of the Mandalorian's strengths. So many of characters have been played by the exactly correct performer its amazing. Katee Sackhoff also has the advantage that her character wears a helmet for most action sequences so she can be easily replaced by a stunt or body double for the scene - and because her mouth is covered, dialogue can be easily dubbed.
Well all that about Katee Sackhoff is moot though. Just turned out with her the voice actor is an accomplished live action actor and she already played some physically demanding roles. Makes me wonder if Dave Filoni already thought about casting her as live action Bo Katan way back in Clone Wars haha
Katee Sackoff in the Mandalorian was not dubbed over, and she didn't need to be. She was the voice actress for the character in the animated shows, not just the live action. The look of the animated character was based on the voice actress, so she was able to reprise her role in live action.
I think Rosario Dawson was a great choice for Ashoka, it was a shame Ashley didn’t return but I hope we can see her come back if Ashoka is ever in an animated series again

live action Ahsoka Tano my heart and mind just said Rosario Dawson.
For me she was the perfect fit, Rosario has very similar facial features
to Ahsoka especially from Clone Wars season 1 to 7, the older Ahsoka
in Rebels did not resemble her younger self or Rosario's facial features,

I think some people tend to forget that almost all the characters in the animated shows look and sound different than their live action counterparts. So we really shouldn’t expect any different here.
I respectfully disagree . I've said it a lot and I'll stay true to it. All the animated adaptions are based on. Real people. Ahsoka started off in clome wars, no reason to completely kick Ashley out if the show. Also the voice actor for Bo kotan, another clome wars orignal, is the same actor who portrayed her in mando. Disney didn't like Ashley for whatever reason and butchered her. I hate them

Ok, I can see this is confusing the hell out of some folks, but it was just a jokey reference to plot holes & inconsistencies that are created whenever there are changes made to Star Wars canon - for eg.
how in ANH, Obi-Wan has obviously never met R2 before, he has no memory of him because they never met prior to the events of that movie -
many years later, the prequels came out, & now there's R2 _with_ Obi-Wan, several times - even in ROTS he's talking to him & *calling him by name!* - yet now viewed in chronological order, an older Kenobi seems to have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of this little droid, - to say nothing of 3-PO!!
Same thing with Ahsoka, a major character, added to canon _after_ the prequels had been made, but in those movies, Anakin clearly never had an apprentice, there was not even the slightest reference to her or mention of him training anyone, because in the narrative of the films, the Jedi order don't fully trust him & he's deemed to be too unstable & is still learning himself anyway -
teaching a padawan is the _last_ thing they would be having him do in those films -
Once again, some years later The Clone Wars tv show comes along, set between the events of eps 2 & 3 - however now, Anakin is assigned a padawan, Ahsoka - by Yoda & Obi-Wan no less!, & she's established as a mainstream character with as much importance as Anakin or Obi-Wan themselves.
And that's the gag, in the Obi-Wan tv show , Ewan McGregors exiled Jedi Master (hypothetically) meets Ahsoka -
but doesn't recognize her because _his_ movie version of Obi-Wan never encountered her.

I think Rosario Dawson is the perfect casting for AhSoka on screen, but I have so much respect for Ashley for bringing that character to life in her Animated form. By comparison, Mark Hamill does some amazing voice acting one of those as Joker in the animated Batman series. I could never see him as Joker on screen, but he IS the joker in his animated form.

They are different formats, different shows, much different ages of the character. Ashley is perfect for the younger, voice-acting version, Rosario is perfect for an older, live action interpretation. They're both great, imo!

I love the action sequences brought about by light saber battles. And Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka is darn just too slow. She sure looks the part. But she is not Ahsoka.
Simple explanation is Marketing, Rosario Dawson is a far more mainstream actress, while Ahsoka is popular in the fandom, she still isn't as well known in the mainstream since she doesn't appear in the live action movies so having a bigger name actress portray her gives her that extra bump (which is extra important since she is getting her own show).
Ashley's appearance was fine just looking at her cosplay and a professional make-up team would probably make it look even more accurate. Her physicality as an actress is something that can be worked on, plenty of actors go and train for roles, even Rosario Dawson probably went and got some training for the fight scenes she had to do. Issues such as age can easily be hand-waved as simply aging differences between humans and Togrutas (this is a show with a 50 year old toddler after all).
Togruta can live up to 200 years.

In most fans’ headcanon, Ahsoka is still 6’1 in The Mandalorian).

Most people are forgetting that actors loop their lines all the time so having Ashley dub Rosario's line wouldn't be a problem regardless of how much dialog was involved. Also, the animated Anakin looks nothing like Hayden so Ashley not looking like Ahsoka is irrelevant because it's called ACTING not finding a picture perfect duplicate. Also, Ahsoka wasn't tall and Ashley's height is about average and with the head appliance she would've been taller especially when wearing boots.
I have no problem with Rosario playing Ahsoka because she was hired to play a part, pure and simple. We don't even know if Ashley tried for the part or not.

I find it interesting around the time that the Rosario Dawson rumors started to circulate, Eckstein made a post on instagram that sounded a lot like she was retiring from playing the character over the fact that she didn't get to play the role in live action like she had hoped to.
I genuinely hope we haven't lost Eckstein in the role to Disney execs and Fan demands regarding the casting, because out of all those things, that would be quite a tragedy.
Especially since both portrayals are strong, Eckstein's and Dawson's are equally good (although I will forever be biased in favor of Eckstein doing a live action version ever since I saw the cosplay she did for the Her Universe brand).

@HydratedBeans yeah that’s a really good point about her height making shooting action scenes harder; I imagine the duels with Baylan would’ve been harder to do. Also because Ashley is short, it’d be harder for her to look slimmer on a ‘normal diet’ - she’d need to cut lots of calories
In the ahsoka show, I think it'd be cool if they added in Ashley's voice during flashbacks.
It's also worth noting that Maul never had Ray's voice, he was always dubbed. Ray was cast because of his experience in martial arts, not necessarily because he was a good actor, but also imagine hearing his voice come out of Maul's terrifying design, it would be comical to say the least. I really do wonder what George's initial ideas for a Sequel Trilogy staring Maul would have been like considering that he would have had all his lines dubbed over. It's not really impossible, actors do it all the time because most movies these days require ADR, Automated Dialog Replacement, where actors come in and rerecord their lines as they watch the scenes because the sets were too loud or have the wrong atmosphere for vocals to be picked up on set cleanly. Many movies have essentially 90% of the dialog you hear in addition to grunts and other vocal noises recorded in post-production. However, this is probably easier if you were on set because you can return back to that performance and do it justice in the recording.
I think another issue to bring up beyond just physicality and skill between Ashley and Rosario is sadly the cancel culture. Can you imagine the headlines when people caught wind that little white Ashley was dubbing over the lines of a woman of color, despite the fact that the character is an orange alien species? That's just a disaster waiting to happen. So I don't think it's so much a matter of it being impossible or even necessarily being too costly to do a dub, it's more a matter of allowing Rosario to fully embrace the character and the fans doing so, too, than trying to get all the little minute details that could also be Lucasfilm's undoing if interpreted the wrong way. The preexisting fans would have probably been okay with it, but the new fans, those that have only seen Mandalorian would have seen this character, whom they know is being played by Rosario Dawson, but not sounding like her, and then researching to see that it was only done to keep this odd bit of continuity when it's still the same character and dialog Ahsoka would have spoken regardless of what medium: Live-action, animated, or even in a book or comic. So long as the character is still the same character, it's not that big a deal if the voices are different. I love Matt Lanter's Anakin, and to be honest, Hayden now sounds really weird, but I'm not asking for a dub over his lines. Although... there are amazing things in the world of AI voicing, you could collect enough samples of every character and then put their voices over anyone else's lines, so one day, somebody may have an edit of Rosario with Ashley's voice and it could be pretty neat, but it's not what we got, nor should it have been.
The tools for tweaking voices for ADR are much better now as well.
He was the stuntman. He got the job because benicio del Torro quit because most of his speaking lines were cut. So they just gave it to the stuntman.
I respectfully disagree with a couple things in this assessment.
The look:
It’s only because of the clone wars animation style of using exaggerated polygons for face shapes and body features that Ahsoka’s character model does not resemble Ashley as much as it could. Ahsoka’s features were actually closely modeled after Ashley originally in clone wars. She looks more like the clone wars version than Rosario does. The rebels look was a noticeable departure from the way she should have looked. Again, animation style changing is what made her look so different. Using the same exact facial structures and shapes made her look super weird with the different texturing they were using in rebels so it made her look way different but if you adapted the original look to the screen Ashley is super close.
Ashley’s experience:
The idea that Ashley was not equipped for the screen adaptation, while I understand the argument, is ultimately not a major issue. Plenty of relatively “inexperienced” screen actors began superstar careers with a huge bang on the screen after a few minor roles much like Ashley. Examples like Steve Carrell, Emma Watson, John Krasinski, Millie Bobbie Brown, Jennifer Lawrence are all examples of people who were legit “nobodies” in Hollywood until the thing you first remember them from. The truth is that from the outside it may seem highly significant that an actor be experienced on screen and “have chops” as they say but the reality is that the casting director picks who they think will accomplish the goal of whoever is in charge of paying them. And when you work with Disney, lore integrity, accuracy, compelling storytelling, and being in touch with the audience that is fanatically loyal to the source material, ALL take a back seat to the almighty dollar. The fact is that Disney is a merchandising and media company not a storytelling company like they used to be. So they ordered an actress who was the most likely to be liked by the most amount of people so that everyone would watch and buy.
Rosario vs Ashley:
Lastly, Rosario and Ashley both would have face obstacles in the live action version of the character. Ashley’s would have been adapting to the screen for an extended role. As we have said it’s not actually a huge obstacle once the casting director has chosen you. You’d get all the coaching, time, and resources you’d need to do it justice, if that was the goal (more about that in a moment). However that fact that Ashley IS Ahsoka, would have heavily guided and aided the process and made any learning curve much more manageable because she knows the character inside and out. Rosario’s obstacle was Ashley’s exact strength. Unfortunately, the entire time I watched the recent Ahsoka series I just kept on thinking “I don’t ever remember Ahsoka being so inexpressive and aloof” she was the opposite of that. She felt deeply for other people much like her master did, but she had learned how to temper her deeply felt emotions with a little self control. Rosario lacked the emotional depth and vulnerability of the character in almost every scene. I’m not saying Rosario is bad, she just is not like the character of Ahsoka. She’s a different Ahsoka that is very far from the original personality and emotional connection of Ashely’s version. I think she failed to understand the character’s personality. She used only the emotional context of Ahsoka’s most difficult times to develop the character and forgot about the wise cracking, lightly sarcastic, and animated side of the character. Which is only part of Ahsoka. That’s why every thing she said felt so dry.
The painful truth is that Filoni and Faveau allowed Disney to move forward without Ashley for financial reasons and also personal reasons which I won’t go into. It was an unfortunate decision and the character suffered for it.

No. When it comes to animated characters that are orange, green, purple etc., people of color tend to fit the live action role better visually because these characters are usually drawn with features that people of color have, namely black and brown people

Also Rosario Dawson loved the character and even made tweets and comments about wanting to play her in Live Action, pair this with the fact Ashoka is her kid's favorite character as they watched the clone wars show together, this brings a real level of heart to the role that i think we can agree make her parts the highlight of this and any episode she shows up in.
Rosario knocked it out the park. She IS Ahsoka Tano. Also, we MUST show major love to Katee Sackhoff for her Bo Kotan portrayal. Voice and live action, she KILLED it.

tbh Ashley wouldn't even be a good younger live action Ahsoka. Look up "Laura Harrier Ahsoka" on google, she's a dead ringer and a good actress. Ashley is iconic for her voice role as Ahsoka though. I treat it a lot like Kevin Conroy as Batman or Mark Hamill as The Joker.

She does not look or fit in the Ashoka, except of course the voice, especially since now Rosario nailed it. Rosario is Ashoka live action. That's a period at the end of that sentence. Rosario Dawson did a pretty good job as Ahsoka, and it's not given to everyone, as this character is amazing. But man, Ashley still is gorgeous, has a magnificent voice, proved she can be physically a convincing Ahsoka, and she did so well at voicing the character... so yeah, i think i would at least have considered her as first choice, and have given her a try...

It would have been awesome to see/hear Ashley in the role, but Rosario was definitely the intelligent choice. She had the likeness and the acting chops to pull it off and I loved seeing her in live action.
