    I have been blessed to be the conductor on this train since 2012. A lot of railroaders don’t like this train and the high profile it brings to the railroad. I for one have enjoyed riding on her she is the pride of the fleet and represents our history. While we weren’t expecting what happened to happen on this day. We had 2 other very close calls. One at Carr and one just north of Platteville. We love seeing all the people that come out to see her go bye. We just ask that you stay well clear of the tracks and enjoy her beauty and power. It’s disappointing that no other business has stepped up to continue this fine tradition since the Denver post was sold.

    So this took place in 2018. I would have never thought that while this was being filmed 4014 was so close to being completed. The double to Ogden was truly a sight to behold. Shame about 3985 being retired. Imagine all 3 together again.

      They won’t ever retire 844 until it’s ruined beyond repair

      3985 is retired until it isn’t again. At some point 844 & 4014’s boilers will expire and will need to be overhauled. I could see them waiting a few years before those happen and bringing back 3985. Kind of like a rotation.

    Adding that diesel is a new thing. They didn 't used to do that. IMO it looks way better without. I remember hearing about back 10 - 15 years ago she was heading home and came up behind a stalled out UP freight train that was waiting on another diesel to help tow it in. Well the engineer tells dispatch they will "take it from here" couples to the last car, pours on the steam and pushes that train across the plains into the railryard. Plenty of steam whisting along the way. Until 844 came over the horizon and gave a long blast on her whistle the crew of the freight train thought they were getting "rescued" by just another UP freight train.

    The incident regarding 844 is a sad one, but we must admit that she was standing a little too close to the tracks. I do pity the family, but she was dangerously close, and we cannot deny that. Brilliant video anyhow!

    I hope its mars light will be attached again one day 844 doesn't feel the same without its mars light it would be great though if it was put back on for its run to Utah and back this April and May for the 150th anniversary of the golden spike centennial when it runs and double heads with newly restored 4014

    Realistically these steamers will keep going. railroads don't end just because they hit idiots, so this shouldn't either. though they may not be as relaxed on casual trespassing on right of way for safe and thoughtful railfans as they used to.

    • @ThomasSeelmeyer
      @ThomasSeelmeyer 6 років тому

      I almost wonder if that was the lead engine on the train that hit and killed a kid at one of the two railroad crossings in Eaton a while ago and that's where UP had room to store it and or its where the NTSB told them to put that engine until they are done with the investigation. My other thought is that it hit a truck or something else at another crossing just south of the Lucerne crossing.
