At 8:39 +/- the greatest sound of them all - A locomotive starting the journey. Every piston stroke accented by the Chuff of the exhaust. , power, grace, beauty - such a magnificent machine.
Where's that Golden Spike??? Blow the Whistle on 8444.. my late Brother In Law William Bill Riley Sr operated out of N Platte Nebraska to Cheyenne Wyoming... I have a photo of him at the helm of 8444... long prior the removal of the last 4... We used to play on 4004 Big Boy... was no fences around it in the 60's and early 70's... Love hearing that Steam Locomotive.....a Machinists dream.. a engineering feat that built America! Thank you for sharing this video with us all!! Rail Road history of 2018.... Cheyenne Frontier Days... we grew up here... Living the Legend!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. This locomotive is a thing of beauty and awe and nothing beats the sheer brutality of it at full chat. I am very sadden to see comments regarding a collision with a person. My thoughts are with their family and friends and also with the crew and any other folk who witnessed this tragedy.
Wow!! That is a superb video of one of my favorite locomotives ever! Your pacing was incredible! And your video is rock-steady -- awesome! One of thebest videos of this trip so far. Love the shots of her rods and wheels and valve motion. And she was making just a alight haze above the stack, showing se was working hard and had an excellent crew who knew qwhat the were doing -- working her hard, so she had a good draft in her firebox so she could burn up all the fuel she was gettng, so no black smoke! :) Nice to hear her stack talk, too. What a locomotive! ALCO and the UP really knew what they were doing when she ws built back in 1944. Thank you for this great video!
844 never fails to deliver an amazing performance! Very unfortunate about the incident she had with that pedestrian. That's the first time I've ever heard of a mainline steamer hitting someone. BTW, I've heard that this could potentially be the last CFD run because they're losing one of their major sponsors. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
Nice job on the videos!!! I wasn't much of a chaser. The cameras would be set up at the Terry Ranch turn, Platteville or Nunn. The Denver Post changed owners. I hope they decide to continue sponsor ship of the CFD train. No comments on the mistake made by the onlooker. The passengers on the train should sue the "victims" family if the family tries to sue UP.
As a former chaser, I know we all love to get pacing footage, but I hope others were able to get as good as footage as you and that you were not one of those that jumps in front of the line and holds the pack back. Out west, it is probably not such a big deal, but I know in the mountains here in the east, areas where you can pace are precious few and far between.
How did you keep the scumbags from spraying graffiti all over it within minutes of it's release? Man, those wheel connecting rods are flying. I can't imagine the force one of those withstands or what would happen if it failed.
Just heard that the 844 struck a pedestrian on the tracks, and went into full emergency stop. Folks I wouldnt be surprised if this causes UP and maybe other railroads to stop all steam excursions for the foreseeable future. Heck this could be used as an excuse to hike the insurance rates to even higher levels.
Crazy Harry the Muppet The railroad is not going to stop running excursions. The railroad won't really have to pay much if anything at all after what happened. However I would assume today's museum excursion to Cheyenne is cancelled.
Families have successfully sued railroads before for deaths like this, and they could use the argument that UP didnt do enough to prevent it since the company knew 844 would draw crowds to the side of the rails.
That never stops people from trying. Heck technically CSX wasnt at fault for the deaths on that bridge and they got sued and lost. Let's face facts - the United States is a lawsuit happy culture that will find any reason to sue.
Just found out about the tragic accident involving the pedestrian. Very sad but I highly doubt the UP will stop the Steam Program. Especially with the 4014 restoration nearly complete. But I do hope the best for the family of the victim. I’m truly disgusted with the video on UA-cam and I reported it. Nobody should take the death of an innocent person and use it to get attention.
Grow up. They showed the truth whereas the (fake) news will put a spin on it and make it sound like it was the railroad's fault. Do you have problems with the news showing footage of convenience stores being robbed and people getting shot or other gun incidents? How about NASCAR where people KNOW there is probably going to be at least one wreck in which someone will get hurt or possibly killed. "I reported it" Wah Wah. Friggin' snowflake.
Bullying someone for trying to do the right thing is really not a good way to get popular. I’d recommend deleting that comment and rethink yourself for that.
Also, I’m quite the opposite of a snowflake. In fact I’m quite opposed to political correctness. And finally I know it wasn’t the UP’s fault. I don’t buy into the garbage that the media pushes.
Do you have problems with me standing up for a family who lost a loved one? Yes that person made a mistake but she certainly didn’t deserve to die. Let alone that person’s death being put on UA-cam (and the video was stolen from someone else who was sending the video to authorities to review). Apparently your comment (which was quite rude actually) shows your fine with someone exploiting someone’s death for his/her own gain. Your comment is so wrong in so many ways it’s not funny. Boo Hoo! Did I hurt your wittle feewings by proving you wrong. Maybe you should grow up and try to do something good like share your condolences instead of bullying someone else for doing it.

She's long and she's tall, may steam live on forever
Every time I see the 844 on UA-cam it puts a big smile on my face
Well done UP, magnificent machine. Keep her in good running condition & use her. Better than a static display in some museum.
Very nice the UP 844 in high speed, great video.
Wow..that ole gal is flying!!! Love it. Superb video. Thank you!
yeah, both the locomotive and the woman it hit! POW! Wonder if the 4014 would have launched her or make her rail pizza.
Look at you agoing and whistle blowing. Ten months ago i saw you in ogden ut resting showing off i love this engine 844 indeed
Beautiful pacing footage!
M

I knew they would double head with 1943!
I have enjoyed your videos for years, and this is no exception. How do you get such wonderful stable pacing shots?

Diesels may have better efficiency, but Steam is the beauty of machine at work. Something diesels lack.
thats only modern diesels, 50s and 60s diesels are a beuty streamliners

Honestly, I like the 844 without the mars light much better.
MohawkNotMountain 844 is one of the only engines I like with the mars light, but I like both equally the same
love that engine
When you coming out west again?
It wasn’t 844s fault it was the predestrians fault. God bless that family.
how fast?
AWESOME!
They did it they put UP#1943 will UP#844 yes
Wish I could go back in time to warn the crew. 😞
or Well At Least let 3985 have it!
Very cool
