One of the benefits of using a bag that doesn't look like a dedicated photo bag is that it is less likely to be stolen. I know a wedding photographer that uses diaper bags! A bag with Lowe Pro embroidered on it is just begging to be stolen.

My problem with this and my own current bag is that it has no structure. Unless you stuff the darn thing it is really difficult to start getting things in and out of em while you are walking around and wearing the bag.
You can also use a diaper bag for more extra padding. I've a proper camera bag: ThinkTank Retrospective 7 and my mate asked me why I'm lugging a diaper bag. Ha! I spent all that money on a camera bag and my mate thought it was a diaper bag. I could have bought a diaper bag instead for less.

This video is fabulous. I love old vintage purses and handbags almost as much as I love my cameras (and regular camera bags just aren't very stylish). I think these techniques will lend themselves to some of the larger purses I have, so I can look stylish, while also making sure that my cameras are safe. Great tips. Thanks!
PoCanDo _ if you’re taking photo in high school DO NOT JUST THROW IT IN YOUR BAG WITH NO PADDING! I’ve had to replace a couple of times because of people rough housing in the hallways and I was toting a little bag that just held the camera extra batteries and one extra lens. It was designed for the camera but it wasn’t padded enough.
WhatTechShow Just buy a camera bag insert from ebay or amazon. That's what im thinking of doing and just going out to a bag shop to buy a high quality bag that's not specifically designed for cameras...but I don't know if it will fit or not since I don't have the insert yet.
Thank you so much for the fabulous advice, i bought the bag, the squares and the wraps and went on my vacation with my Nikon DSLR. My personal experience with the wrap and the square bags is that they are fantastic. The wrap protects the camera and I can stow into any luggage. The square they are absolutely useful and I carry in them all my cables, cleaning supplies, etc - love the zipper and padding. As for the army bag, this will be just another camera bag that did not work for me. While the bag is spacious, it has no compartments, no way to secure the closing flap securely and no inside support to keep the bag from collapsing into itself. There is nothing in the bag other than fabric to give it shape or support, as a result everything is just sitting inside loose. I did not find it as useful and it was for you and I will be returning it. In my view, you need this bag, but with some dividers that can give the bag some structure, your idea has merit, just not for me.
Yeah... the domke wrap is $15+. The other inserts are about $20 (a piece). Ultimately you’ll probably spend $55+ on this setup. I don’t know... seems cheaper to just buy a cheap used camera bag. Used Domkes can sell very cheap... sometimes as low as $20. I guess if you’re trying to be low key, this is a decent alternative, but a thief would probably steal the bag anyway. It doesn’t scream “camera bag”, but the moment you take the camera out of the bag, a thief will know what’s inside. Plus, if you leave it unattended your stuff will probably get stolen regardless.

I have a couple of neoprene tablet PC cases (ie, iPad cases) that I use for a similar purpose, to hold my GH2 and other stuff while inside a regular bag. So I can identify with this setup albeit a bit cheaper, but I was hoping to find something a bit more all in one ie an insert designed for a messenger bag with like 3 compartments or adjustable spacers to transform it more into a camera bag
Great! Thanks for the tip. I've never heard of these wraps before. Seeing the disappointing options of the camera bag market, maybe this is the way to go. Bag designers don't seem to think about women at all - the most practical camera bags are black, ugly, and look like a mechanic's toolbag rather than anything you would wear on the street. I'd just drop this wrap in my regular street bag and that's it, problem solved.

Been using this system since 1990, cant imagine using anything else. I have a Billingham holster for camera and lens and 2 CCS bags for the lenses of the day. I chose the stuff for the day shoot and then dump them into a lightweight backpack. I cant imagine using a normal camera bag they look so clunky and tacky ;-)
This is good too for street photography. In certain areas you don’t want to have a fancy bag or even a camera neck strap that advertises what gear you have.

The obvious answer to a heavy camera bag is to put it on wheels. Unless you will be walking over terrain which makes that impracticable, in which case you have to take a few camera with you. The problem with only taking two or three lenses is that you can imagine yourself thinking, "If only I had brought such and such a lens with me" - unless you are intending to take only a specific kind of photograph; such as macro photography.
tricks!!!! . . i also record music/sound, too!!!! . . i have urinatating pets! who urinate on cases! . . porta brace is somewhat cheap! and waterproof. . you can use nail polish to differentiate from the blue! . . some one i know used a nylon case and dropped a couple usm lenses and broke them both!! (baggage handlers at airports might care less!) if you dont deal with urine, and want strength you can put a nylon case within a nylon case . . fashion over gear-come on!! . . or perhaps your gear or project is not important!! . . also to differentiate stuff, luggage tags!!!! marked with markers with different color markers!!!!
Nothing like the other videos from that married photo couple that teach photography, they were plugging Domke, LowePro. And one bag that he has to carried his laptop everywhere which makes carrying that backpack, digging out for his camera, and seeing how the lenses are just bunch together while on top are HEAVY ITEMS are damaging his camera gear he had a small backpack, fitting all that top heavy junk. 20 bucks amazon bag?! If you've got a camera for 150 bucks that's ok. At this moment on the market is a lot of camera bags which don't look like a "typical" camera bag but give you much better protection for your camera.

Quality canvas bag have become more difficult to find. As the market has become flooded with inexpensive canvas bags with cheap metal snaps, leather straps and buckles. The snaps don't work, leather cracks, etc. the bags don't hold up very well and appear cheap. I looked around on amazon and could not find any canvas messenger that appears like the one from the video. Perhaps I'll need to dig some more. Also besides the gear protection in the video, also sold are camera bag inserts which are basically a rectangular padded insert with padded dividers that can be installed in various type of of bag to protect cameras, lenses and gear.
I would consider using an insulated thermos bag that keeps food cold or hot as a camera bag along with those circular soft containers that should do a good job of protection.
if you want your camera and lenes in 1 bag that you can put into any backpack/bag check out the ICU (internal camera units) from f-stop. Great quality and lots of sizes

I like my camera backpacks to look like camera backpacks because if not, the thief gets confused and they won't be able to accomplish his/her mission and thats not cool. I like to play fair.
i make my own stuff using corrugated plastic, with a foam side the type you use in tents to sleep on). it is flexible and very durable. hot glue seals it. i have camera shelters in a number of bags.

The concept is not so bad, but what about the quick and easy access to the camera when you are shooting? What about the risk to drop and roll down the lens bags when searching for your gear? And what about the easy access for stealing the contain of such a badly closed bag. Thieves not only steal photo bags ! They choose firstly easy bags to open or access...
Informative video. Would have liked to see you pack the items in the backpack as I start to see issues when packing stuff into a deeper backpack. When you start stacking these "bundles" on each other, they're not secured by velco to the sides so there's more shake/potential for expensive equipment (even though wrapped) to bump into each other. Also, even assuming you don't stack these "bundles" on top of one another, you'd have to reach in deep to retrieve the items from the bottom of the bag. Would have loved to see how you pack these items in your backpack and overcome these challenges.

When I go with my kids I ussually take camera and wrap with t-shirt or kids winter hats same for lenses works very well for me :)

It look like a carry on bag. I like a bag that doesn't says camera bag, steal me. I use a 6-pack soda bag to hold my lens or camera.

Woolen or other socks also work well as small bags. The feet can be cut off and sewn up, etc etc...

I'm a guy, and i feel the same. I cant find a bag thats both practical inside, and beautiful on the outside. How hard can it be for the manufactuers?

Domke wraps are about £23 per pop. You might as well buy a normal camera bag due to the cost of this involved.

Absolutely brilliant camera carrying advice!! I’m definitely going to be using those useful accessories. Also it’s a lot safer to carry all camera equipment in a normal backpack or messenger bag. 👍🏽

The concept is not so bad, but what about the quick and easy access to the camera when you are shooting? What about the risk to drop and roll down the lens bags when searching for your gear? And what about the easy access for stealing the contain of such a badly closed bag. Thieves not only steal photo bags ! They choose firstly easy bags to open or access...

Informative video. Would have liked to see you pack the items in the backpack as I start to see issues when packing stuff into a deeper backpack. When you start stacking these "bundles" on each other, they're not secured by velco to the sides so there's more shake/potential for expensive equipment (even though wrapped) to bump into each other. Also, even assuming you don't stack these "bundles" on top of one another, you'd have to reach in deep to retrieve the items from the bottom of the bag. Would have loved to see how you pack these items in your backpack and overcome these challenges.

I love my Swiss Gear backpacks. I use one as my camera bag and one as my college backpack.
