This feature is literally life changing. For creators with users of their reports that continually want to see a synopsis of the data, it's right there. The fact it updates with slicers and cross-filters is unbelievable.
Rodger Benavides | Your users will (or should) still be asking ‘so what?’ - this does nothing for that.

Too many modern fancy visualisations actually do much to obscure what is actually happening in the data. This has the potential to change everything!

I could see the insert variable into the text narrative very useful for Financial reporting. Back in the day when filling out K1 and stuff I manually had to update each single metric on a word file. Now I guess I can use this to dynamically change

This feature is great and I've got my hands on it for the first time, thank you for the video. The feature needs a lot more added into it. I need dynamic phrasing within my strings, and I need the entry form to recognize more complex requests, such as formulas, particularly IF THEN conditionals to determine the phrasing in the string. My own Schedule Analysis conditionals are more cumbersome, but are better suited to provide a more dynamic result. Please add to the feature!!

For my tables in a report page, I created a copy, then converted that to a visual (Bar / pie - some chart) then do a summarize on it. This then creates the Smart Narrative.
When you happy with the narrative, delete the visual - Smart Narrative still works based on filters. wooohooo

Amazing insane!! Two words to describe this feature. Still in preview so will look forward for more details.
1 question and idea! why its limited to only NLP (Q&A), report developers write lots of DAX code and so it should include measure support , instead of asking questions. I feel business users ask questions (q&a) and Developers should be able to pick the measure they want in the commentary text.
Ex: get a comma separated list of top 10 products based on quantity sold could be done in DAX measure and can be added to card visual, but not easy enough to get in q and a, without multiple attempts unless it gets the expected results. Just a thought to include the measures in this amazingly insane functionality. Thank you 👍
Hey Bharath, you can definitely use your DAX code in your narratives as well! Just reference the DAX measure inside the Q&A box :)

I was referring something like "Insert" to insert measure inside the commentary box, something similar to what Tableau has in dynamic text box.

One question : When we right click the visual and click "summarize", it also demonstrates a smart narrative like functionality. I am able to use it in Power BI Desktop but not in Power BI Service. I wanted to know, can we use this "summarize" feature in Power BI Service ? If yes How?

I am using the dynamic values to create summaries so some reports can be sent out via the PBI Service schedule with commentary. I have some measures with the output being "more"/'"less" and "+"/"-" to compare performance with last week and this week. It would be great if this could be done within the same section rather than using measures (similar to how conditional formatting works but more customizable), and if you could refer to the dynamic values in other dynamic values. Having said this, really cool tool that does have a use-case.

Question: once we create the smart narrative, can we export the smart narrative as part of the report to a email. so the recipient sees the visualization and the narrative.

why don't I get the smart narrative add in if I search for it in power bi desktop. I just refreshed the sept update. Did anyone try downloading it ?
It's a preview feature, so you have to enable it manually! In Power BI, go to File > Options and Settings > Options > Preview features. Then select Smart narrative visual.
This release is awesome, game changing, about to go live with a New report with it as a key feature.
Justyna I'd like to know is it possible to use with Direct Query?
An Issue I get is when I add multiple values and go back to the Smart Narrative visual it loses the #names of the measures you have created and forgets them occasionally so you can't easily pick them out or re-insert them.

At 2:56 you showed "Smart Narrative" for the entire page, which was great.
What happens if I move around the graphs (in 2nd column flip/move the graphs), will that automatically update "Smart Narrative" content?
In short, is "Smart Narrative" content generated/displayed based on graph order/position?
Hey, this is awesome and I already used it on a demo this week. One thing I want to try is to use it as a pop-up tool tip for a visual, I wonder if it would work like that!

It does work in a report page visual tooltip. Really powerful when implemented in this way

Nice!! This was much needed to tell a story... without creating those ppt's... but having said that.. it would be too early to comment on its maturity level... obviously this is in preview. Let's wait and see how it goes with the real-life scenarios.

Hey guys, thanks for your consistent efforts to bring all PBI novelty, guy in cube is becoming a must for anyone who would like to master power bi end to end. Regards to this new features, is it considered as NLG is it considered as Aria NLG? What is missing over there is the capability to generate comments based on variance ex: budget vs forecast vs actual ...etc this will make this feature a true best in class solution.

So can a lazy developer see the DAX generated by that dynamic value? I could see that as a way to get around DAX writers block - write it out in text, let the AI figure out the DAX and then build off of it? Not that I know any lazy DAX developers or anything, just asking for a friend....

Nice , best way to explain your charts what’s really mean to audiences ... imagine we add AI to read text.. AI will be able to demonstrate charts for audiences :)

oops... realized this is the smart narrative - my Q was about Timeline Storyteller. Anyone with experience with Storyteller?
Was wondering if the following is possible in a smart narrative? I've not seen it in the demos/info so far.

Very sad that you can't use DAX to customize the values. Why only the AI question field? something like AVERAGE(Countries[Life Expectancy]) could've been subsituted there all the same for the value.
Well you can always create your dax measure first and then look it up in the smart narrative viz😉

I’m seeing a lot of ‘this is amazing!’ comments - but it really isn’t. Answer me this: where in this “smart narrative” is the reason and response? THAT is the intelligence and THAT is what seniors leaders want to see in a commentary.
I simply do not see what value this pretends to add. If I’m reviewing a report, with visuals on the left and text on the right - I want that text to give me the full picture. What I don’t want to be thinking is ‘okay, so what?’.
But look, I’m only an idiot who’s consumed board reports for 25yrs so what would I know.
We are all going to be out of jobs soon. The robots are coming.
