- ►Honeywell WiFi Touchscreen Thermostat: amzn.to/1OguLpM
This smart thermostat from Honeywell is a great "intermediate" product between the old school 7-day programmable thermostats, and the high-tech, expensive "Auto Learning" and "Auto Sensing" thermostats like the Nest or ecobee.
Here are my 4 Favorite Features:
1. Remote control access from anywhere, anytime! All from the app you can set temperature and system settings. Plus you can easily modify the 7-Day programmable schedule.
2. They have a website "app" that allows you to login and control this smart wifi thermostat from anywhere. Plus you can turn on email notifications for an assortment of possible scenarios.. "alert me when the humidity drops below 20%" etc
3. Simple to use scheduling interface. Very easy and quick to jump to a specific time/day, tweak heat/cooling wants and hit save.
4. Great touchscreen display. Vibrant colors, different themes, easy to navigate, easy to read.
(This could be a great thermostat for the elderly, as they can easily read and control the thermostat themselves, but someone else can login remotely and "help control/temp settings" if needed.)

I am an hvac technician with more than 20 years of experience. Honeywell has been making thermostats for over 100 years. The nest is a piece of junk. They have known issues inside the hvac community. Most technicians do not like them. Most of those features nest provides is smoke and mirrors. People will not use them or alter their lives to fit the thermostat. I love the honeywell 9000. Its definitely my recommendation for a nice wifi thermostat. It works, works with different types of systems. It is reliable and easy to set up and use.
Ive been using this for 3 years now. works like a charm. Better than nest
Does the Honeywell thermostat automatically set to 87° in the summer
This is a great thermostat. The automatic feature is a bonus for those few weeks of the year where you have the air conditioning on to cool the house but don't want the house getting too cold i.e. set the A/C to cool down to 67 but heat comes on at 63.
Where is this the setting for this?
I like that thermostat because it helps you turn the heat or air conditioner on your phone when you're at work or vacation. Also to adjust the the temperature before getting home
This video was the deciding factor in me purchasing my Honeywell, and I love it!!! Thank you so much!
Cool, glad it helped you out. We're still liking ours
I work at Honeywell.this is one of the best thermostats in my opinion
I bought the Model RCHT8612WF2005, the T-5 Smart Thermostat. It's been great!
But I was wondering if there is a remote room temp sensor available, and my unit isn't a Lyric is it?
Thanks for your time and help extended!
MARKIE D I did too, not sure how to delete their account.
Superb video, Ben. Your pace is perfect, and you covered so much in just a few minutes. This is exactly what I wanted to find out, and it looks like the Honeywell is the one for me! Keep up the good work.
Hi Ben, You did such a great job with this review that the price on Amazon is now $269.00
Don't forget to cut the power. Even though 25V is low. If you some how short the circuit. That can cost you hundreds in repair. So play it safe. Cut the power to the furnace then install.
I went with this after my HVAC technician strongly suggested it I wanted a nest originally. He told me Honeywell is the best with the track record to prove it honeywells been in business for hundreds of years.
Something I'm unfamiliar with, and having a varying temperature from the 3rd floor down to the basement......I found the "Circulate" feature to be a big help. It seems to kick the fan on periodically to keep the air circulating around the house, in hopes to avoid a sauna on the top floor and an ice box in the family room. Maybe this is a normal feature, but it was new to me, so I'm addition to the Pro's you outlined, I added air circulation to my list.
Yes, a good idea as long as your ducts and main air handler are indoors. Ours are in the attic so in summer, the circulated air would be heated and in winter it would be cold air.
We have this product and we love it. Since we 1st purchased we have moved and purchased a new one for our new home. Your videos are great, looking into the Bissell smartclean
+Amber Bogue - Nice, thanks!
Great Review. Three questions: How many watts is the device using in idle mode (Wi-fi and Screen on)? Can you set the screen to turn off after a minute? What major features is it missing from other more expensive and perhaps more popular smart thermostats?
Dude, what an absolutely fantastic video and channel. Thank you for doing this; regards from sweltering Argentina!🤩
Purchased this model a few days ago and inside the sealed box, no operation manual ! Had to find that on their website which isn't the same as having a booklet to study. My only complaint with these thermostats that display the "current" outside temp and humidity is, that information is not specifically outside your location or exactly the temperature outside of your home. That information is obtained from the internet weather websites and those are mostly guessed temps and humidity depending on where those weather stations are located as well as how often they are updated and/or managed by real humans. It would be better to have a WiFi device that mounts outside your home and provides a real time temp and humidity at all times. One other point to make would be to have a small LED that lights up blue or green or red when the system is running when the display is timed to off. We rarely use the "programable set back" temps mainly because our home costs less to heat and cool by leaving the setting set on one temp all day and night such as 78 in summer or 70 winter. We had tried to do what the power and gas company suggests by moving the temp settings up and down 10 degrees however, that costs much more overall in power and gas in our climate area.
There is a big problem with this thermostat that rarely becomes apparent until AFTER you get it - there is no way to set a temp differential which means that in larger homes that the furnace will short cycle. Most thermostats (almost all of the the older ones and plenty of the new ones - e.g. Ecobee - allow one to set a differential. I'm NOT talking about an offset which corrects for a biased temp reading on the thermostat - differential lets one set a delta above (in the case of heat) the set point which allows for longer run cycles with less frequent and short cycles that can damage equipment. As it stands, this honewell firmware version willl stop immediately upon reaching the set point. And then a few minutes later, when it drops marginally below the set point, will re-engage albeit for like 2.5 minutes and so on.
I want to install this in a rental unit where I'd prefer that the renters not be able to adjust temperatures. Can I lock this so that it can only be adjusted remotely via the smartphone app or laptop?
Did you figure out how?
Thanks for the review, it's now $119 on the Amazon.
$99 now. November 2022
I bought one too, I like this Honeywell because it has large screen and simple functions.
Paying extra for features and function I have no benefit is money goes down on the drain.
Great to hear from my fav tech reviewer
Have to change out my Thermostat just went out a very hot day, thanks for the video really helps, going to Home depot in the morning.
If you live in Georgia, Georgia Power is offering an instant rebate, with final price being $94!
Right now at work I have three of the Proliphix N130 24v Thermostats, they are not wireless but I have them direct wired to Ethernet. I can program them from my office or even at home with a little hoop jumping through a portal. These thermostats are about 10 or 12 years old now, and before I start having trouble, and so that I can be more in control of them, I would like to see what else is out there. What I can do that I haven't see on other smart thermostats is I can schedule the heat to come on and shut down for particular days, weeks, months and really for a year in advance. This works perfectly for me as I need to schedule heat when guests are arriving and when they leave so that we are not heating dorms or apartments when they are empty.
Have you seen anything like this out there? I can go month to month, schedule in and out perfectly. So you might ask, why do I want to change thermostats? Well the short version is we no longer have support from the IT department where I work, so I need to find a solution that lets me bypass all of their nonsense and restrictions. 2 weeks ago at home I installed a 7 day programmable King/Atmoz thermostat, and I can control it from my phone or tablet from anywhere in the world. Unfortunately its only a 7 day programmable line voltage thermostat. Here at work I need a full year programmable stat so i can set schedules months at a time.
Owned for approximately 5 years. The micro electromechanical relays in the thermostat are starting to fail. I would recommend a thermostat with solid state switching like the Johnson Controls T9500.
Question: can I set high & low for multiple times in one day ? like 4 time low and high in one day ?
Thanks for the review. Suggestion, before you installed your new thermostat you should have used some touch-up paint. I had the same issue, but I went to home depot and matched the wall coloring, then painted over where the old thermostat was.
For me, I like this one because it uses SmartThings that I can control from my phone versus having to have a spying Alexa or Google Assistant in my house. I agree that the historical data is interesting, but - as you said - I don't think it'd do anything to my day-to-day behavior, really. One thing I didn't get from this was whether there's an outside sensor so that it can gather the temp/humidity data? Great video, though.
Great video. So great that even the folks at Bestgatgets used your script verbatim for their review. It’s a bit sped up so you sound like grampa chipmunk. But your words all the same. I was curious how the “smart” aspect worked so I’ll have to search more reviews. I hope not everyone used your script. Love it. You do great stuff.
Just FYI programmable thermostat do not save you money on your electric bill I do HVAC for a living. setting your thermostat to one temperature all the time is far more efficient because you did not have to run it hard to catch back up
What happens if wifi is out or power goes out? Reset remotely or any notifications?
Thank you, this was very helpful. We would love a comparison between the ecobee voice activated and Nest
That is sooo coool! Keep doing this! Do giveaways too! Thanks!
Thanks for the video man! Really appriciate it! :)
How many program slots per day can you program? It doesn’t say in the site’s description.
You run through the app without showing that and where to get it so you get the right one.
I hear that you cannot change the offsets on heat and cool like make the cool go on in 2 degree
I'm interested in seeing you review the nest. Good reviews and good channel.
Okay cool, thanks
hey have you paint the wall yet. im thinking to get one of these
Does it have tamper proof controls like a screen lock or password to keep unauthorized people from changing the temperature settings? If the screen is locked on the thermostat, are you still able to change the settings with the phone app? Or do you have to go back to the thermostat to physically unlock it first?
Yes
@@darrellwood79 Too late my friend. Lol. I already took a chance and purchased it months before you replied. Plus you only answered half the questions. You answered "yes" to the first and second question but the answer to the third question is "no". But Thanks anyway. However, I did notice a fatal flaw in the software. Be aware that if you turn your AC/heat system off using the app...you're screwed. The app becomes greyed out, useless and it locks you out. At this point, you can't turn the AC unit back on or do anything from the app. You'll have to drive all the way back home and turn it on manually from the wall controls. I'm glad I wasn't out of town when I found this out. It seems like a simple fix but its worth noting.
Hi...Thank you for your video...congratulation..One question, in mode cool , the temperature minimum is 74 Graus F Why? Do you know, I like 70 graus F In mode cool....
Thank you for a great review. I'd like to mention that Honeywell raised the price by an astonishing 30% since this review with no additional features. Amazon's price is now $249. I'd also like to mention that anyone considering this thermostat consider the Emerson Sensi Wi-Fi thermostat as it does everything the Honeywell thermostat does and it's only $99 on Amazon. In my opinion, the Honeywell unit looks better and their app is nicer but the Sensi does everything the Honeywell unit does at a fraction of the price. I own two Sensi's and very happy with them. I'd like to get the Honeywell thermostat for my condo but at $249, it's hard to justify a unit that costs 2.5X the price of the Sensi.
$19 at ComED + $5 shipping and $9 in taxes.
$99 on Amazon this week Nov 20, 2022.
It’s called inflation
Like your presentation Ben!
Can you advise re:
How to unlock a Honeywell RTH6580WF model? Thx.
I hate the nest thermostat, it always wants to lower the temperature at my house even when I am away for a few months. I want a thermostat that I can control when I am away on vacation. Not one that decides to cool my house down because that was my pattern when I was there.
Are there hidden fees such as member fees to get the heating/cooling information on the website?
how does this unit, gather the humidity? Is it the 'weather' or does it have a sensor? Kinda wish, they incorporated humidity sensor along w/ temperature sensors now days in room smoke/ carbon monoxide detectors... basically, cause, these units are already in newer homes and could help w/ 2 story homes w/ 2 ac units and eliminating hot/ cold (bad circulation/ imbalanced systems) spots.
Hello. Thanks for the info. We bought a house and I can’t figure out what app I need to connect it to my phone. Which one do I use? Thanks
I like my Honeywell T-5 Smart Thermostat a lot.
However, Honeywell's customer support stinks on ice! When you phone, you're on hold forever, and by email it takes a good week at least to get a reply.
Sure wish they would work on that!
I bought one of this thermostat for $60 I love it couldn't get a better deal
Lucky guy.. Hehe
the shits a refurb model.. its not new... so I say sucker you for getting someones old thermostat!
viajes80 my parents got me one when I moved out
This thermostat has all the features I could ever want except the most important one. I just want to program it to come on at 5am and go off at 8am everyday. However, after talking with support it cannot function in that capacity.
There is no 'on' or 'off' feature in the programming schedule. It is 'wake' temperature and 'sleep' temperature so instead of coming on at 5am, it comes on around 3am. Instead of going off at 8am, it is generally still on at 11am and I have to hit the off button to get it to turn off.
I am really disappointed that it won't follow the schedule that I have programmed it for. I have the smart feature turned off, and it still won't follow my scheduled program.
This thermostat has turned out to be a nightmare because it keeps turning on outside of my scheduled program and will not turn off when I have it scheduled to shut off. Instead of saving me money, it costs me more.
That's strange, mine kicks on when it's scheduled, and turns off when scheduled, no issues at all, works perfect.
If you have the model listed by this video, then you are wrong, there is an on/off and there is a schedule that you can set Wake, Leave, Return and Sleep. You either have a different model or don't know how to program it if you don't have those features
Does the rth9585 work on dual-zone systems and do you need to to make it work
Hi dear! Could u tell me what’s the app for Honeywell Thermostat to use for iOS. I try to connect the WiFi thermostat to my smart phone but it doesn’t work. Thanks
Question….. does it need a C wire to work…. Bc I realize my old Honeywell setup doesn’t have a C wire it only have 2 wire not 3
Excellent review.
+jahkure - Thanks!
HELLO ... can i lock it .. so no one can change tehe temp. or the schedule i already did it .. ?
Yes you can
Does it have a humidity control function ?
Can I set a schedule to run the AC for 20 minutes at a time?
Would love to turn the AC on at 50 minutes after the hour and then off at 10 minutes after. That's a 20 minute run time.
Thanks for the review!!! I’m moving into my new place and not sure if I should get Nest or this one. Do you mind doing a review for Nest as well? Thanks a bunch!
I already did! ua-cam.com/video/9Lib9ioueA4/v-deo.html
Get the honeywell, the Nest is nothing more than a nightmare, I have had nothing but problems with nest since I've had it. constant disconnects, you have to reboot the whole system from scratch.Go online and look at all the negative reviews and comments, I just purchased the Honeywell RTH9585WF1004 Wi-Fi Smart Color Thermostat, it also has all the features of the Nest plus more and less all the headaches of talking to nest support who don't understand you to start with.
Don't get the Nest, just returned it. It takes forever just to go from 75 to 73.
I bought a home with this thermostat and i already hooked it up to wifi but cant find the app to control it ? Would you know the name of the app?
How bright is the display? Is there an option to turn off the display after x amount of inactivity? I'm interested in the thermostat but it is located in front of a bedroom and I do not need another night light. Thanks for the review.
Yes you can calibrate the display
Having trouble finding a comparison between this and the Lyric T5. Seems the T5 does more, but maybe lower quality screen (color) explains the price difference?
Good vid, thank you.
Glad it helped you out (sorry, I haven't tested the T5 yet, so I'm not sure how they compare)
robbed18 try ecobee 3 lite its about 168. Its works nicely
You said it monitors outdoor temps. Does it come with a wireless thermometer transmitter for outdoors?
It uses the wifi data to check local conditions
For outdoor temp and humidity, does one have to run a wire to the outdoors or is the unit pulling info from a local weather station?
Great question - the outdoor weather info is pulled from the wifi, as you input your zip code
i live with adults who dont pay the bills but are always changing the temperature. how does the lock out feature work on this unit? is it easily hackable, just a 4 digit pin like many other locking features ive seen? i know there is a "fully locked" option, but how 'hackable' is it after a random person downloads the app?
Great review..does it turn off when not being used? I like my old one which is dark and motion controlled when u approach and lights up? Don't want it lighted up all night. Thx
It could. U can set a timer/schedule
Can the temperature difference be set to more the 1 degree. Another words can I set it to let’s say 72 and once it gets to 72 not kick back on again for about 3 degrees. Most now are 1 degree which cycles the ac or heat way to much
I bought a home with this thermostat and i hooked it up to wifi but cant find the app to control it ? Whats the name of the app?
Buyer beware, Honeywell thermostats keep your house within 1 degree temperature, they don't advertise it in any way I have found, that causes your heater and ac to cycle a lot, when it turns on, not only does it use more energy then when it's already running, it puts much more wear on your pump and motor, I had to talk to one of their techs to find this out!
In the long run you pay a lot more in bills!
All these people spending all this time to find out it's factory like that. I loved it other than that!
Thank you!
Is the ecobee enhanced better then honeywell rth9600
Do you happen to know the difference between the RTH9585WF (second generation) and the RTH9580WF (first generation). The difference I see is the LCD screen on the 9580 shows "date/time" and the 9585 only shows "time". I'm wondering if the 9585 might work with some smart hubs that the 9580 "might" not and perhaps the 9585 has perhaps a newer wifi chip.
What I don't know is if the 9585 has the same background color options as the 9580.
Thanks,
Hi Guys! I have a question - thank you for this video. I need to get the MAC and CRC address for this thing so i can connect it to wifi. It is not on the back of the unit, how do i get this information from the unit itself? The card was not left by the previous home owners.
Can you have multiple thermostats on one app/account?
I had the nest and hated it, just had it removed and went back to a regular thermostat, it kept turning off when it wanted to because of some kind of crazy AI learning feature that it had.
Does this thermostat have that same feature ? Because I miss the remote access but I don’t want a thermostat with a mind of its own. I want something simple to use .
My Thermostats are going bonkers. They switch on by themselves I’m sure it has something to do with buttons. I purchased a couple of these. I will update as soon as I install. Thanks
Does this work with Apple HomeKit?
What Is The Name Of The APP For The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat Don't Know Witch One To Use. Is It The (Lifestyle Or Some Thing Else) I'm Buying The Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat.
Is there a replaceable battery backup?
February 13 2020. and the Honeywell RTH9580WF is selling for $228.99 on amazon. Price went up.
That is not the correct model. This is a different model number
Does the firmware auto-update or require user intervention?
Ben, I have this one. But recently I have had an issue with it, but maybe you could help. My Wifi completely went out by the provider. So I had no Wifi, therefore I could not turn on my thermostat since I had no wifi connection. I was out for 2 days without Heat. Is there an override or something I can do in the future on my end to get it to work without Wifi? Thanks
Great video! Thanks!
Can I use a Honeywell C7189R1004 Wireless Indoor Sensor with this thermostat ?
I'm not sure, try contacting their Support to double check
I have a problem with my room mates, constantly messing with it and hiring the temp. Does this one lock so that I can control it 100% via my phone locking them out??
Do you think the extra features you would like will be added to future firmware upgrades?
Honeywell thermostat at Home Depot is 69.99 was 88.16 the metal is rth65080wf on lin
Does this work with Apple Homekit?
If I buy a LockState Connect LS-24VAC transformer (plugs in like a phone charger) from Amazon for about $25. I now have wifi will that work with base board hot water heat
Good video thanks for posting
can you see also in celcius?
i like that thermostat better than my visionpro 8000. i have not started my system yet as home is just finishing construction. Can I access the gateway on my smartphone as well of internet? I was really hoping for usage history!!! like how much the system is running, when in aux mode heat / cool mode etc. I guess as long as I can change my temp while i'm away thats good for me
Yup, that's all I use it for
Does the screen go black when not in use?
What does the partial screen lockout entail when it is activated? I am thinking about using this thermostat in a business. I want to be able to keep people from turning the temp too low during the summer.
+Matthew Mizushima - Just tested this for you. Home screen still shows full stats, inside and outside temps and humidity. Both fan and system tabs are still shown, but you can't modify the status or temps as it is locked down. Same with Menu settings, you need the password to unlock control. Looks like it would be perfect for an office setting.
How about recalibrate as temp shows too high.
Is this HomeKit compatible
I have three zones in my house, each with it's own old school Honeywell thermo. Lets say I installed a 9000 in each zone, does the app give you an option to control the three different zones?
did you ever get this question answered? I have the same question...
What’s the name of the app? so I can download it
i had a problem to remove the back plate
Problem with that unit it can’t control the humidifier
thanks for you tutorial ... but i have problem ,I have only four cables NO C can you help me?
eddie larena you need to use a external power supply or switch wires to make a c
when setting up the app what Devise do i hit to install the software shows T5 or T6 or T9 and T10 but does show the one i have RTH9585WF1004 wifi smart Thermostat
