Your videos are always the reaffirming dad advice most of us never got, it never gets old. Being a relatable, nice guy also makes your channel leagues ahead of other style videos. Not knocking them, but at sixty I find your content the most helpful. Thanks as always for all that you do.
I happen to like the way 100% cotton shirts wrinkle in a dress shirt during the work day. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I love to press a shirt and let it wrinkle naturally as I wear it.
Many years ago I went to a fashion consultant (before your type of videos were even being done) and had my colors done. I was designated a winter and given sample colors to use to help me choose my wardrobe. It did not take me long to be able to instinctively choose the best colors to wear. It was very enlightening.
I have a performance unlined sportscoat ... looks good no matter what, and makes it easier to look neat Sure I'd like a natural material, but the tradeoff is to be wrinkle free
I remember in a gentleman's gazette video, they said a non-iron shirt sometimes has chemicals added which make the fabric less breathable and feel hotter.
Then you need to ask yourself what’s more important? It’s always a trade-off. My advice is to try and see if it works for you. Take action and decide for yourself.
@@willisix2554Non-iron shirts literally make my skin crawl. Some brands use formaldehyde. I simply cannot and will not buy them. The drape of the fabric looks like you’re wearing plastic. It’s so difficult to find untreated 100% cotton dress shirts.
3:06 100% cotton vs cotton/poly blend makes a huge difference - and of course different types of cotton 'wear' and 'resist' wrinkling differently - 'non iron' branded shirts from Hilfiger, Klein, or Ellis are pretty reliable in terms of wearability, style, and endurance....cheers.
Good basic dressing info for men presented in the right tone for most . A personal preference of mine that I never figured out until the last couple of years is what it is about certain shirts I don't like even when I can find one that ticks most of the boxes for me is button colour . I prefer a dark shirt to have same colour buttons. - a line of white buttons on dark fabric is distracting and lowers the look of quality on shirts IMO - just saying' . It's also harder to find shirts with same colour buttons .
Yeah, I see your point, especially with black shirts. If you really love the shirt, and it’s the right color, and the right fit, just have a tailor replace the buttons.
The 'proper fit' issue is one I've struggled with. Oversizing, whether it used to be a trend in the 80's, being raised by Depression Era parents who want you to 'grow into it', hiding body parts, or thinking/wishing I was bulkier...has influenced me into the early 2000's. It looks sloppy and juvenile. I had jackets up to 42R (and I'm really 38S). I can understand guys needing to dress looser for comfort, but I feel so much better wearing clothes that are sized for the person I really am.
It was also a fashion at the time, though. My wife and I have been watching “Friends” reruns lately and I find that whenever Ross or Chandler are shown wearing a suit it always looks about 3 sizes too big.
Funny. I literally just commented on your video about sandwiching. I basically said I liked that you modeled for us and I used to not try things on. Once I tried something on I didn't think would look good on me, and then it DID end up looking good, I started taking the time to try new things.
It’s mainly all personal preference. Anybody can wear them. I gravitate towards the button-down collar, because it keeps the collar points down inside a sweater.
Glad you mentioned socks. I was always told back in the day your socks are an extension of your pants not your shoes. I've always used this especially with my suits which I wear everyday for work. But that was "back in the day" so I've always questioned if this has changed. Good to hear I'm still in the right lane there as a general rule.
Nice...thanks for these details...growing up, most of my shirts were 100% cotton, but most seem to be blends now. These types of videos are key...my local mall is barely alive, and i've heard Macy's may switch to small personal showrooms/dressers...?
I’ve been trying to figure out what the name of the button on the sleeve up from the cuff buttons are - gauntlet button! Though I wear shirts that don’t have one, I’m a big fan of the GB. Is it possible/feasible to have a tailor put them in? In any case, Thanks John for improving my wardrobe vernacular. 🙏😎
I deliberately break the "match your socks to your pants" rule. I like to wear borderline outrageous socks, especially if I'm wearing dress pants and a jacket. It's a good pop of color, like a pocket square.
I try to wear shadow stripe socks that match the pants AND shoes. Blue shoes with brown pants (or the other way around)? I have a pair of blue socks with a brown shadow stripe. These socks come in many different color combinations and work really well.
Great video, John. I've been wanting to get some polo shirts from collars and co the portifino ones. There's 3 colors I want but always seem to be out of stock in the size I need, but I have 5 polo from Spier and Mackay that are like the ones from the other company, but I keep checking collars and co when I can.
John- What are your thoughts on making a video on how to take care of clothes and accessories. Most guys don't seem to know how to iron or polish shoes. I iron my shirts every wash but I see so many guys with wrinkles on their sleeves and collars.
For the wrinkle test it may have been helpful to mention the fabric makeup of the shirts. I would assume 100% cotton would wrinkle more than a poly/lycra blend. I’ve followed your advice about wearing properly fitted clothes for years now. Baggy is unflattering no matter your body size. And this is for older guys, wear pants and shirts with at least some stretch. They fit much better and are way more comfortable. Ween off the Levi’s.
I’d love to see a video on any tips you have for taking care of your clothes. Especially how to keep a white dress shirt white. Or do you just buy new white shirts every month and toss the old one when it gets ring around the collar?
I have only discovered UA-cam about 4 years now and I have to admit it has been great help for my fashion "sense and improvement". Your channel and Style OG's amongst others, even younger guys like Aaron Ramirez have breathe new life in my "style game😊❤🎉💯 🙏.
Love the videos .Keep up the good work.I noticed you had your shirts on decent hangers.Wire and plastic hangers are a definite no no.Also wish I had more wardrobe space …my wife’s clothes keep finding their way into my little section and they are wrinkled before I get a chance to wear them 😂
Yesterday I purchased large dress shirt from Costco from Calvin clein.I returned it because it was very big although my size is large.Any best stores you recommend to purchase dress shirts which fits like charm! Thanks in advance!
It’s tough to say, because every single manufacturer has their own set of standards for sizing. My best recommendation is to spend a little time out shopping. I have found great success with Nordstrom men’s shop. Their house brand stuff always seems to fit me really well for a middle of the road price point.
A former girlfriend , whose father was a tailor , showed me what to look for in shirts and jackets . Quality in the workmanship will give you longer wearing and you will look great . I find Jos. A Banks to be a wonderful men’s store .
Store clerks don’t understand math. You try to buy a dress shirt and they show you a shirt that is 32/33. Someone needs to explain to them that 32 inches can never be 33 inches no matter what they put on a label, which is why I have made my shirt made. They fit and are worth the money.
Love the channel. The wrinkle test unfortunately does almost the opposite of telling the quality of a material. Most shirts that don’t wrinkle or are wrinkle resistant are made out of polyester. And polyester is cheap man made material that is not breathable. Unfortunately a lot of companies use it because it is cheaper than natural materials.
This is not true actually .. the quality of the material is very much down to weaving and processes .. polyester is far superior for many styles and often can be more expensive with better weight. It also washes and holds colour better and can be far more high end look and touch. Stop following a nonsense woke agenda and lose the soyboy herd attitude and try to learn more before throwing nonsense unfounded opinions out. Chinese is generally cheap and poor quality so maybe aim your liberal nonsense towards the Chinese fashion industry thanks
Do the material crush all the time ., trouble is many shirts are wrapped and unless you remove you can’t test. Shop workers don’t like you messing with displays. Polos are similarly difficult.
Hello. I would sugges that if you have a video called "know these 12 things" that you list them numerically. Say Number one - always go for fit, Number two - understand layering, etc... There was no way in your video to count what twelve things you were talking about. Other than that, it was a nicely produced video.
Some of the most wearable fabrics are polyester based, which is basically plastic clothing. It's not the end of the world as some suggest. But legitimate concerns do exist on the effect of male hormones. It would be helpful to have some content focused on natural fabric options, although I admit that is a challenge.
Collars and Co. is one of the worst companies in America . As long as your shirt fits perfectly, then they are fine. If you need customer service for anything then you are screwed. They have employees that write reviews to make their reviews look good. On many review sites they have around a 1.5 out of 5 and that is terrible.
Just tried collars and co. Polo shirts and one short sleeve button down. The entire collar, not just tips in front, are like stiff cardboard. Horribly uncomfortable. Sent it all back.
If you're talking about the scrunch test, John T. Molloy advised it in his book Dress for Success. He said that high quality fabrics (apart from linen) don't wrinkle as easily as cheap ones, and if you wear cheap materials that wrinkle badly, it gives a bad impression. It doesn't matter whether you're in sales, climbing the corporate ladder, or whatever; looking like a wrinkled mess makes you look like a loser.
Great question. It can’t start from a place of being discouraged. It should start from place of positive encouragement. As much positive reinforcement as you can do would be appreciated. Men want appreciation. Start small and build and always encourage.
I'm an old geezer now, going on 17. If I had to give my younger self any advice, it would be this: don't waste your time or your mind on clothes, It will only dissipate your energies. There are important things in life; devote yourself to them. (PS: My younger self was an asshole. Too much time & too much money spent trying to impress people with my tie & sock wisdom. The only one who looked at what I was wearing was myself and I. Real People don't give a rat's ass about your ability to pull off Chic at the drop of a brass button. Trust me, a wrinkled smile & crow's feet are a testament to a life well-lived. People who smile freely and display a kind heart are the winners in life; cherish the times you share with them. They might leave you feeling better about yourself. Don't spend your time on a bitch with good taste, there is nothing to be gained. I mean that in the most sincere way. And stop studying models on the catwalk and in the ads. They all look like their feet hurt, and they can't go on another step, or another day. Life stinks. Fashion loves misery.)
The shirts of Collars & Co are fine. Do not buy the half zip so called sweaters. They are a glorified track outfit and feel like a sweat shirt.. no way are they a sweater
Checked out Collars & Co and unfortunately it's a bunch of stuff adulterated with stretch fibers. Stretch fabric is junk from the fast fashion industry, made to wear out very quickly. It winds up being extremely expensive due to constant replacement. It's an ecological nightmare because it can't be recycled. Also it never fits right because it doesn't break-in to your body shape. I could go on but that's enough for me to say no.
With some love, this is all very, very basic advice. “Match your belt and shoes.” C’mon. Thats not even 101 level. That advice will help you not look like a teenager, but it’s not exactly what most people are looking for when they click a style video. I’m sincerely not trying to troll. I just expected a bit more.

Sorry, but they can just FO for requiring a phone # for this offer. Hard NO.
When it comes to fabrics…I prefer all natural materials…cotton, linen, wool…. If it wrinkles it wrinkles. I hate poly / synthetic anything….
Right on!Me too…..Poly is TACKY…..

So thankful that I found this channel! I’m starting to focus more on my dress and your tips are extremely appreciated and really make sense.
Thanks for watching

Then you need to ask yourself what’s more important? It’s always a trade-off. My advice is to try and see if it works for you. Take action and decide for yourself.
Personally, I don't like the feel of a non iron shirt
@@willisix2554Non-iron shirts literally make my skin crawl. Some brands use formaldehyde. I simply cannot and will not buy them. The drape of the fabric looks like you’re wearing plastic. It’s so difficult to find untreated 100% cotton dress shirts.
Agree and also dry cleaning chemicals have carcinogens in in them
3:06 100% cotton vs cotton/poly blend makes a huge difference - and of course different types of cotton 'wear' and 'resist' wrinkling differently - 'non iron' branded shirts from Hilfiger, Klein, or Ellis are pretty reliable in terms of wearability, style, and endurance....cheers.

Yep, totally understand. I think the best advice is to dress for the body. You have right now. Not too big, not too tight, just right.
It's hard to get rid of the oversize mindset... We all thought it was stylish in the 90s. still working on it! 😂
Oversized or undersized fit is fashion and will change with time. Proper (tailored) fit is style and will last forever.
Funny. I literally just commented on your video about sandwiching. I basically said I liked that you modeled for us and I used to not try things on. Once I tried something on I didn't think would look good on me, and then it DID end up looking good, I started taking the time to try new things.
Can you explain in maybe a video the types of collars that collarsandco has and what or who should wear a certain type of collar?
It’s mainly all personal preference. Anybody can wear them. I gravitate towards the button-down collar, because it keeps the collar points down inside a sweater.
Thanks for sharing John. 👍🏻

Very solid video today. I enjoy wearing polos quite a bit, but I do wear T-shirts sometimes. I also liked the info about layering as well.
Thanks for watching!

did you ever do a video on different body types? As a skinny guy the tucked shirt+fitted pants never worked.
Socks are kind of extension for the shoes so I think they should match shoes more than pants. What do you think?
The general rule is to match the pants, but there’s always an exception.
A true legend. Well, thank you sir. That’s what I’m striving for.
This was a great one! Legend
Thank you!
Man where have these tips been all my life. ❤
Thanks John. Will the discount work for me in England?
Unfortunately, I’m not in charge of that, but definitely give it a shot.
If you roll your sleeves up, try rolling them up when still on the hanger. You might find it looks tidier.

You're the best... thanks
You're the best!
Thank you for pointing out that the suit jacket needs to be buttoned only at the top. A detail that needs to be stressed!
Exactly!
My wife is always telling me they both need to be buttoned, I think I'll have her watch this video.
Can you make a video of style for a bigger guy, like 5-11, 250lbs. Haven't seen one yet Thanks
I’ve made a few already, but maybe it’s time to revisit the topic. Thanks for the suggestion.
Chubby but elegantly styled is the goal. 👍
I only buy shirts that are made entirely from natural materials.
Proper fit a must, it makes the entire difference .
Agreed!
It’s a give-and-take. Sometimes that’s what you want, and sometimes it’s not.
I got a moniker for you, Jon… Babe Ruth of UA-cam.… Always knocking it out of the park! What do you think? Always appreciate you brother
Hey, I’ll take it! Appreciate you!
Those shirts look great but I just can’t bring myself to spend that much on a shirt. I Do like your videos though thanks.
Some of the most wearable fabrics are polyester based, which is basically plastic clothing. It's not the end of the world as some suggest. But legitimate concerns do exist on the effect of male hormones. It would be helpful to have some content focused on natural fabric options, although I admit that is a challenge.

Yeah, Collars & Co shirts look nice but $140 USD a pop ($200 AUD) is a bit steep.
The fact that Cuban liked it is a reason NOT to buy ANYTHING from them!
THATS WHAT THEY HAVE IRONS FOR! DON'T BE SO LAZY! NON IRON SHIRTS STILL NEED IRONED IF YOU CARE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE!!!!!!

"If you don't try new things, you may end up looking outdated quickly"👍
The sock rule is not absolute, burgundy socks with dark gray slacks, navy socks with khaki slacks.
Correct, socks should match pants not shoes
How do I encourage my husband to upgrade his wardrobe without getting on his case?
Threaten divorce:)
Great question. It can’t start from a place of being discouraged. It should start from place of positive encouragement. As much positive reinforcement as you can do would be appreciated. Men want appreciation. Start small and build and always encourage.
Do you ever buy clothes for him? My husband is perfectly happy to let me order most of his clothes.
White socks and blue jeans ARE acceptable.
