I’m loving T Kingfisher ❤ I’m so glad Tor picked her up so I could find her! I need to dive into her backlist.
You really hit the nail on the head with this video, loved it!!
I just finished Fairy Tale and I had a very similar reading experience as you did. I would've been fine if the whole plot revolved around Radar, but alas, we had to raise the stakes, lol.
Totally agree that the character work in Nettle & Bone is WAY better. But that's really no surprise, she is just brilliant at writing compelling characters and character relationships! And I adore her authorial voice.
Great video 🤩
This was a great video! Thank you for comparing these. I haven’t read either, but I have to say I may go for Nettle & Bone first.
🐕 I haven’t read Fairy Tale, because SK isn’t really a favorite. But Nettle and Bone is so fun! I also just loved the age of the protagonist - “older” women in quest plots are still so rare!
I'd recommend you the movie "Into the woods" but you've got like musicals
I love that musical and actually was lucky enough to see the revival on Broadway recently! Its probably what got me into this subgenre honestly
🐶 I listened to the audiobook of Nettle & Bone back in May and now it’s the perfect time of year for a relisten. With winter on the way I recommend The Raven and the Reindeer, which is her delightful take on The Snow Queen. It’s also the first T. Kingfisher book I read.
Your comparison to Stardust reminded me of how much I enjoy it when fairy/magic markets show up in stories.
I'm finally getting to the questy parts of Nettle and Bone and I am here for it. I will be curious what I think about Fairy Tale whenever I get around to that one
I just finished Nettle and Bone and loved it so much!! So very much. I read What Moves the Dead next and also enjoyed it, although for me, it was much darker and more methodically paced. Very refreshing that they didn’t align in style or feel with each other as some books from the same author do. Happy reading!! 🧡🍁📚
If I can keep my momentum up I am hoping to get to two more of her works this month!
Hello 👋 happy reading to you!! 🕸⚔️
Same to you!
Loved Nettle & Bone!
It's not a rooster bcs that's how you get basilisks!
I dnfed it but Clive barker's weave world is a popular dark fantasy to consider
I found fairy tale very underwhelming overall. Gonna have to give KF a try.
Have you read "All the Murmuring Bones"by A. G. Slatter? I just finished it and really enjoyed it. She just had another dark fairy tale released earlier this year called Path of Thorns, and I am definitely looking forward to reading it!
I agree with everything you said 😊 Been reading Kingfisher for a couple of years and liking/loving all of it. Maybe try her Bryony & Roses as it is another fairy tale. Am about to start Raven & the Reindeer.
Also, have you tried Robin McKinley (Beauty) or Angela Carter (The Bloody Chamber - beware, has bite)?
Thank you again for the awesome recommendations!
A dark fairy tale I recommend is Into the Bloodred Woods by Martha Brockenbrough. I can see how it's not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. But check content warnings because it does get dark.
Thank you for the recommendation, I will be checking it out!
I’m betting you enjoyed Kingfisher more.
And yep, you did. I’ve been enjoying T Kingfisher’s books. Only found them recently and I’ll read anything put out by her now without knowing anything about the book.
Hoping to get to the one I put on my tbr for this month cause I need to read more Kingfisher!
I want to read Nettle and Bone! I need a good whimsical read
Yea its odd to describe cause it has whimsical character actions but some dark topics and aesthetics
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance I love a book with dark aesthetics!
🐶 ❤
I haven’t read Nettle & Bone and I like it better than Fairy Tale 😂
I don’t think King landed Fairy Tale - the first third was AMAZING because of the characters and their interactions/relationships - it fell apart to me after that -everyone in that section was modeled after an existing fairy tale, so they just faded on the pages and made them forgettable.
Agreed, I think having the audiobook meant I didn't have to linger in the parts I didn't like for too long although the ending was way weaker than the beginning for me
