I'm a stroke coordinator for a large hospital and can't wait to share this video with the members of my stroke recovery group. You definitely have working knowledge of the struggles they often share with me and I think this will be very helpful to show them. Thank you so much for this post. I'll be on the lookout for more videos!

Thank you Dr. T I'm at a point in my stroke recovery (3rd year), where I really needed to hear this. I've followed you for awhile now and thru my therapy and encouragement from you and others I included more mental therapy with physical and let's just say starting to more educated about my recovery instead of focusing strictly on the physical. Again, Thanks! Chuck

I'm so glad I found your channel! My mom had a stroke due to her neglecting her health and the stress that was induced upon her from the last 3 years. She was a nurse for 25 years and her being fired for not being jabbed pretty much destroyed her. She had a ruptured aneurysm and a month later had to get another aneurysm clipped. Now she's going in to finally get her bone flap put in place.
We've been doing all these things with her! The hospital and rehab center don't do enough PT with pts...so we have to come in and do it! She hates it lol cuz it's hard. But she has no choice, er well we don't give her a choice. I keep telling her that the brain has neuroplasticity and it's like starting from scratch. Your brain has to rebuild those new connections! Cuz can't move her R side at all and speak properly.
We also keep telling her that she'll never be @ 100% BUT she can get to 80! And when she feels down we show her vids of her when she had the stroke. What condition she was in then vs now. We keep a small lil vid diary of her progress. She's also lost 50lbs because of NPO. We laugh about it cuz that was one of her goals...to loose weight, lol.
My mom can't walk yet but she's recovered a lot. She doesn't know it yet but she's going to start lifting weights too. Baby steps.

The way I see it is lack of mobility feeds a negative input to mental health. Negative mental health feeds negativity to mobility. It's a vicious cycle. However, the cycle also works as a positive cycle. If you set reasonable goals and work towards them you will be successful. Remember, healing is a staircase, not an elevator. And the other items mentioned are very important as well. The journey to healing is not a day trip, it's a journey of many days and steps. Remember, One day at a time.

Thanks so much for the positive reinforcement here! After a previous video where you talked of the CDC recommendation of 150 minutes/week of cardio, I'm really liking having that goal of 5 to 6 minutes of walking on my treadmill four times/day. It's a small start to get me going. Maybe this will help someone else too. I need to make some changes to food (serving size mostly) and mindless eating.

I also had a brain aneurysm and a stroke and i had a clean diet so please watch out for high oxalate foods like raspberries. spinach. almond products. Potato. sweet potato. strawberries. blueberries as the oxalates cause nerve and tissue damage M,S. M.E. kidney stones and much more neuro/inflammatory illness than you would believe. You can read about it in my book "Are Our Superfoods Silently Killing Us?"

It affected my left side. I had problems walking raising my arm. Physical therapy I took and it taught me how to walk with a walker. Thank God for that. Exercising 1hr30min a day I was taught to do. It help me to come home . I was given blood thinner pills to take once a day

I wish you had been around after my brain surgeries. After a couple of months I was in a rehab strapped into a wheelchair with a patch over one eye for double vision. The medical so-called professionals had me drugged and recommended I go on government handouts because I wouldn't walk or work again. I got angry and determined. I read up on my condition, found I was being overdosed weaned myself off the pharmaceuticals, snuck out at night to go walking (unsteadily) and exercising. Got discharged worked for years to crawl up the ladder till I was traveling internationally for a company. Found a good Neurologist to give me clean bill of health.
I loved your list. All good points, I would add avoid alcohol (I found out the hard way).
    Just keep at it!

I’m new to this program, so I can’t speak from experience; however I want to say how impressed I am by Dr. Tobias. I fell down a longish flight of stairs in late 2019 and a few months later diagnosed with NPH. I received a VP adjustable shunt in August 2020. I have been in a clinical PT ever since. I am much improved with gait issues, but still have weakness on one side. Then last year, I started having a shaky hand. Of course I went right to the neurologist and I am finishing a 17 day trial of Levodopa carbidopa. No change so we can eliminate Parkinson’s. I may have a Parkinson symptom. So I am now seeing an OT. Anyway I’m telling you all this because as far as PT I read that the NPH PT programming is similar to the one used for stroke patients. A brain injury is a brain injury after all. So I am thrilled to have found Dr. Tobias.. she is excellent. A miracle…I now enjoy exercise!
    Thank you, Dr. Tobias.

I had a stroke in November. It is now the beginning of May. I go to therapy once a week. I have found many of ways to have groceries delivered. I need this because I live alone and have to depend on friends to get to therapy and Dr.s visits. I live in a smaller remote town. I can’t walk because my balance is so bad. That’s the main problem I have. I can’t drive mainly because I need a walker to walk, and getting it in out of the car is hard and impossible for me alone. I like your videos because they give me information i need. I hope I can get to where I drive and be more independent.

One thing you mentioned that has been helpful for me is journaling. I haven’t struggled too much with depression, but I have always had to monitor stress/anxiety, and journaling has helped with this, significantly.

My stroke was 2+years and I have been plant based for at least 6+ years and just this March my husband and I embarked on our intermittent fasting. It lighten my load considerably and all my numbers and ailments came down. I do still have my stroke issues but my head is clear and anxiety is gone. Sugar has been cut out completely and that is the biggest adjustment because sugar makes one go thru emotional changes and not for good. This was also discussed in the Brain and Life issue of this month(October 2022). But I agree with a lot of you, people just don’t understand 😕

The main culprit of a large number of strokes is food full of carbohydrates and sugar, also almost all drinks contain a lot of sugar. An alternative to pure water and teas. My experience is that the healthiest foods are low in carbs and plenty of fat, eggs, vegetables, fish and poultry. There are a lot of educational videos on YT by Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Dan Maggs ... Have a nice week.

Hello Dr Tara. My 21 year old son is 7 months post Traumatic Brain Injury due to a MVA. He is right at the start of the minimal conscious state. He requires 24/7 care. Not mobile, not verbal, is given meds and nutrition by peg tube. We have been home from rehabilitation for 2 months and due to changes in insurance providers there has been no in home therapy. He has back tracked tremendously in the last 8 weeks or so. I am his only caregiver at this time as we are working on getting therapies started again and some help so that I have some much needed time for myself. He has out grown all his braces as he is finally getting healthy again 125lbs from 114.5lbs at his lowest. He is 5'11 with long arms and legs and unfortunately I'm only 5'3 with very short arms and legs. I have tried to just do basic range of motion on his arms and legs with the very little time I have to work with him. But I find it very difficult especially his legs because of the difference in our height and limb length. Do you have any recommendations on some easy basic exercises that I can try at home. At least until we get his approvals for better outpatient physical and occupational therapy? I can do most of the basic upper body from neck to shoulder, shoulder blade and down. I've been shown alot at his rehabilitation when training for home care. But my biggest concern is his legs and possible blood clots again as he has already recovered from a bad one in his left calf. Any information or website you could share with me would be greatly appreciated. I have already enjoyed and learned so much from your videos and will definitely continue to watch more. Thanks for your time and information.

First and foremost, thank you very very much for all the videos.Very helpful for me who got a massive stroke in 2015 w complete paralysis in left side. Just one question if you don't mind. This vid has lots of good info, but it doesn't cover my current problem. Being 6,5 y post stroke, I still haven't given up due to many stories about good recovery even after several years, so why not me...? BUT, how do I keep motivated and pumped after so long time? I generally am quite positive, but I notice a part of me says "what's the point? The brain is never going to be like before anyway, and you will never be able to function like you really want to.. And I know that, but another part of me refuse to give up, but it gets affected by the negative part I feel and simply stops trying. How do I "keep it up" after all this time all the way to the goal...? :)

I work as a detention officer at a jail, and it seems that my superiors do not have an understanding that I may not be able to function the way that I did prior to my stroke. I can not get the rest that I need because 3 nights a week I have to work doubles and I have to return back to work 8 hours after that. and I am feel depressed and like I am loosing my mind trying to deal with my life now, I feel like I have no one to lean on and I am by myself now and that at the end I will be all alone. I just want to make sure that I do not have another one and that I recover and get healthy.

I have had botox twice and it didnt do anything and the doctor is suggesting another round also tried bacofen which shapes all my energy I feel the straps around my ankle causes some of my pain and often will loosen it to see if it helps which it does sometimes I heard about smo would that be beneficial

I am seven years post stroke and my therapists at the nursing home I live in have you given me a custom AFO which is very difficult to put on myself because it pulls my toe up which makes it difficult if not impossible to put my shoe On myself. It is the ONE thing that I have not been able to accomplish on my own. I am trying to find out the best exercises to do for the week ankle. Prior to my stroke, my feet/ankles always rolled out. So I feel I was “doomed “to suffer this post stroke. Would it be beneficial to use the CUBII? Would that help strengthen or would it make it worse? I would appreciate any advice

Stand instead of sitting if you can and finally walk instead of standing if you can.....walk walk walk... .just keep moving, doesn't.maatter which part of the body you are moving.

Hello Tara. I’m going to make an assumption that all of this advise is applicaable to Parkinsons as well??

    • @rehabhqofficial
      @rehabhqofficial  2 роки тому

Hi Robert, Thanks for asking. Absolutely! In my experience, patients report a significant improvement in symptoms when following these lifestyle modifications. Also, there is TONS of evidence suggesting that 45 min of moderate intensity cardio 5 days/week slows the loss of dopamine. So that is one other thing I also strongly encourage with PD.

I don’t allow my self to get down over whet I’ve lost. I focus on what I can can work on. Hell I had an evasion last week they I took something from. I was standing straight up kicking my invoked leg out 25 30 degrees. And so I crane next to my bed and rip off 40 at a time. And since doing this I’ve found I can lift leg up and step forward it’s weird to walk like they 4 1/2 years out. Where in rehab I would step forward with my right leg and use my hip to swing my left leg forward. Where now I’d say I’m up to 70% leading ere oth left foot. I feel like an infant leaning how yo walk again. Steamer bags of vegetables are a stroke survivors friend.
