I have a lot to say. First, a balk isn’t a thing in softball so please stop calling it that. Second there are no pick offs in softball as a runner is not allowed to disengage from the base until the pitcher has released the ball. Third softball does have illegal pitches but this is not one. It’s a ball because it was an attempted pitch that did not go through the strike zone. Illegal pitches in softball most often come from something called a crow hop when both feet are off the ground simultaneously which the rules state 1 foot must be in contact with the ground at all times. She did that. There is also a rule that the ball can’t pass the pitchers hip more than 3 times and she is good there too. Yet another common way for an illegal pitch to be called is if the pitcher disengages from the rubber before moving forward twords the plate (usually in the windup) but this rarely happens now that 1 foot is allowed to be off the rubber behind the plate. So having said all that this essentially comes down to this; it’s a ball and just like any other called ball it is live and runners advance at their own risk. Yes I am a softball umpire, former coach and league official.
Yeah, basically what I thought. My little sister played softball and I learned that there aren’t pickoffs. So confused what the team and coach are thinking here.
@@adamellsworth9462what if for example someone is stealing second base and pitcher turns to throw it to second baseman, baseman misses ball and it keeps going. Runner continues on, you’re saying this isn’t a live ball? Because it didn’t pass home plate? Not arguing just curious.
Since I can’t see first base, I can’t say for sure, but this runner either left early (which she’s out) or she’s really oblivious because she didn’t start running until it was clear that the ball was moving towards 2 nd base. In which case , I’m not even mad that she got out.
A pitcher can throw the ball to any base. Just like like a runner can steal second and third or home. The person on first base ran to second so either way the throw is legal.
This is softball. They do not pick off like baseball. She was in the wind up to pitch and ball slipped out her hand. This is called an illegal pitch, Ball is called and runners may advance at own risk.
It's not an illegal pitch. It's a pitch that missed the strike zone. Or as it's commonly called, a ball. Otherwise , you're right. Runner can go ince the pitch is released.
i’ve been playing softball for about 6 years now and one time back in like 10u the other teams pitcher did that (on accident of course) and it was a ball
@@Dynamite-Bangthere is no balks in softball. It is called illegal pitch. Only certain illegal pitches are dead balls. In this case it’s an illegal pitch, ball on batter and it is live ball, runner may advance at own risk.
Seems like a well executed trick play. If the runner was fast and they were going on the release of the ball, and it’s called a ball, why not? We should also consider the risk factor of throwing the ball into the outfield or an error which could advance that runner to third.
Incorrect on the second account. Incidentally, the base runner is the only one who performed an illegal action. She can't run before the ball leaves the pitcher's have. Softball pitching has some different rules than baseball. This will be called a ball against the pitcher and an out against the runner.
Incorrect per USSSA Softball rules. If unintentional, ball is live, all play stands. If it is judged by the umpire as deliberate it is still a live ball, dead ball being called AFTER play is finished. All play stands. The offense is then given a choice to accept or decline the ‘ball’. A team warning is issued for the intentional drop. A second offense results in pitcher being restricted to the bench and coach ejected from the game.
As i see it 2 things. Rinner is on a timing play... She timed her run on the release going forward... 2nd, this should be considered an illegal pitch ... Pitcher is comitted to going foward.... So call the pitch a no pitch or ball and the runner should be allowed 2nd. If they appeal field ump decides to send runner back or not. You cant apply 5 different rules here becuase they all contradict each other
in baseball the ball has to go to home plate (or near it if you suck like me) otherwise its a balk if the pitcher did not start their windup and stepped off to throw. but who am I to know, I only play baseball
That should be considerd a ball and runner should be awarded 2 nd base, the pitcher didn't throw the ball to second base or short stop ? Her hand rotated to make the pitch thus the only player that could make the throw to second would be the catcher? Illegal pitch!!!😮
If the ball is dropped out of the pitcher's hand during the delivery of the pitch, then the ball is live until it rolls across the foul line, and the runners can run at their own risk. This is a legal play.
@@drayker99nothing. The ball is still live if it crosses the foul line. Maybe OP is thinking of baseball where a ball is only called if the pitch crosses the foul line.
@@babababad that's kinda what I was getting at... Based on his logic a wild pitch that bounces and crosses the foul line without going over the plate would constitute a dead ball 😂...
If they practice this it's good for them. It's how you play the rules. But I will safe this does need to change for the sport because this is now going to trend as a way to face out the runner to get the out. Integrity is how the players and coach should conduct themselves.
I could see this happening in softball but rarely in baseball. Mainly because of how they pitch. I thought this would be called a ball. And the person stealing second would be out. This also could be a foul. So regardless the person running to second wouldn't get second.
Since her reaction indicates it was deliberate, I must assume there is no “balk rule” or the rule is vastly different in softball, it would have to be, given how long it takes to pitch a ball. Anything I say would be a wild stab, but since they practiced it, and play wasn’t called dead immediately, I’m going to guess “legal”.
After looking back at it, you easily hear the coach or a fan yell "Early!!" Insinuating the other team's runners had been leaving early on their steals. Clearly this is the case if the coach and pitcher decided to attempt this move. I don't think you can fault the pitcher if you're not going to make the runners follow any rules themselves.. all coach and pitcher did was put the ump in a dilemma lol what you wanna call this one Blue?!
