Part of my life and an inspiration to me since 1975. Woah! That's 49 years? Two-thirds of my lifetime and I still travel to Hergest Ridge for a bit of inner peace when I need to. Thank you, so very much, Mike.
Hi John ! we must be around the same age...early to mid-sixties? Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge have inspired me tremendously too. I was still in school and I remember the actual days I bought these two classics of my lifetime.
I have been listening to this since it came out. And this music never gets old. I had it on vinyl. Such beauty and simplicity Mike Oldfield has to be one of the best guitarist on the planet . + His compositional skills are unmatched. Such spiritual music. So glad I revisit this from time to time. More music that inspired my musicianship. Peace .
listening to this since since 1980. What a finale.Abonded all hope in playng it but juat would keeping playing it and playing it. Thanks Mike Oldfield. Pure genius.
Oldfield' Masterpiece. His TB became a Clasical, but OMD reaches the top of the emotional sounds of the ancient Ireland, it represents the unic Celtic Simphony never composed in the musical world. Oldfield for ever.👍
What a fantastic job Paddy Moloney did on the Uillean Pipes. It sound like Mike is playing them, as it's so in keeping with the composition. It sounds so deep, it goes to the core of your being. Those pipes bring tears to my eyes!
Actually Liam O'Flynn on uileann pipes, Paddy Moloney on bodhran, an Irish percussion instrument with a double headed short stick striking a circular skin held on the lap.
I like beer, and I like cheese I like the smell of a westerly breeze But I like more than all of these Is to be on horseback Hey and away we go Through the grass, across the snow Big brown beastie, big brown face I'd rather be with you than flying through space. I like thunder, and I like rain And open fires, with roaring flames. But if the thunder's in my brain, I'd like to be on horseback Some like the city, some the noise Some make chaos, and others, toys. But if I was to have the choice, I'd rather be on horseback. Hey and away we go Through the grass, across the snow Big brown beastie, big brown face I'd rather be with you than flying through space. Some find it strange to be here, On this small planet, and who knows where. But when it's strange and full of fear, It's nice to be on horseback. Some are short, and others tall, Some hit their heads against the wall. But it doesn't really matter at all, When you happen to be on horseback. Hey and away we go Through the grass, across the snow Big brown beastie, big brown face I'd rather be with you than flying through space. So if you you feel a little glum, To Hergest Ridge you should come. In summer, winter, rain or sun, It's good to be on horseback. Hey and away we go Through the grass, across the snow Big brown beastie, big brown face I'd rather be with you than flying through space. Hey and away we go Through the grass, across the snow Big brown beastie, big brown face I'd rather be with you than flying through space. You know, I'd rather be on horseback.
Lost my copy some years ago when my cds were stolen from my car. Hard to find, and one of my long time favourites. Easy to imagine riding the foothills on my big brown beastie.
I can remember a music review site years ago saying that the first section of side 2 is boring and should be skipped lol. Never heard a music review that was so wide of the mark! It just shows with art, you either get or you don't.
Listening now to this heartfelt masterpiece as thousands of Ukrainian people suffer under the war of Russian invasion. When will peace ever reign for all peoples of this world we share together?
I listened to this music a lot in my twenties. I prefer the original 1975 mix - despite any imperfections it may have, it has a lighter, more "airy" feel to it, which is perfect for this music.
I believe that's a bodhran played around 12 mins. It's an Irish percussion instrument, with a double headed stick, (allowing a fast double beat by twisting the wrist) striking a circular drawn skin. The tone can be slightly tweaked by pulling on the cross strings spanning the back of it.
Actually Paddy Moloney from the Cheiftans played that part..one of the few instruments that Mike could nt master. ..Paddy never got a credit for it though!!...seen mike in 1980 supporting Van Morrison in Macroom...Cheiftans were on the blll Mike joined them for a tune...Paddy returned the favour and guested with Mike a few times
A Pioneer turntable, Advent speakers, Marantz amp, Koss headphones, and a Sony T C 683 real to real Mike Oldfield albums, the calendar said it was 1975. I was a happy 21 year old bachelor.
This glorious piece never fails to take me back to old places long left but not forgotten... but what's happened to On Horseback? Was the horse withdrawn not under starter's orders?
11:15 to 11:46 - did OutKast base the backing track of their 2001 hit "Ms. Jackson" on that hook?! It's not identical to it, but it's uncannily similar, IMO (even more uncannily coincidentally, Mike had recorded a song called "Outcast" only a few years before that)...
Oh my God, this is the 1976 release and vastly superior to the ruined remix that is the only version for purchase now. Mike, if you are reading this please, I beg you, rerelease the 76 versions of HD and Ommadawn as the current “standard” release and for the sake of your strongest posterity. I could talk for hours why these versions are compositionally superior but please trust me.
@UCyj_6eGjbrOtrF8Yf7ubVBA You are wrong, it is in this and at the end of this face. What i am asking is: Why is it not at the end of the video that is where it should be?
The first five minutes are like all the sorrows in the world being delivered up to heaven.
That's a beautiful idea. I'm playing a piano version this weekend.

Mike Oldfield's music continues to inspire new people. I'm 22 and this gives me goosebumps every time.
I also happen to be 22. This is the greatest album ever made, by the Beethoven of the 20th century. Timeless genius.
I was about that age when I started listening to him...Shoked then and still , 30 years after....!!!
I was 14 when I first heard this album, and it blew me away.
I discovered Can when I was 22, 22 years ago. There's no band as good as them. Tago Mago is the best album.
All time favourite. ⚘️💕
5 mins 20 until 10 mins 10 with the Northumberland pipes is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written 😎💙🏴🇬🇧
I asked family members to have that segment played at my funeral
They're actually the uillean pipes played by Paddy Maloney.
❤❤
First 5 mins is better imo
@@ianstrange5674 close, but it was actually Liam O'Flynn, also of The Chieftains. Paddy Maloney on bodhran.
A lovely masterpiece from Mike Oldfield

For me this music makes life worth living.
Same....
Craig Evans from Rainham Kent???
Yes it manages to express what many can't any other way.
@@matthewpace5834 no sorry, I'm another Craig Evans from Kirkham, Lancashire.
By far my favourite of the early long composition albums.
The ending is one of my favourite guitar solos of all time.

He died a few weeks ago (12.10.21.) He played my favorite part of Ommadawn.
I want this music played at my funeral!

What’s your source of information? Paddy is credited on album for Uillean Pipes.

Mike Oldfield's best work... Even better than Tubular Bells
Agree
A cry from the heart at the start.
It feels to me like he's saying 'what do I have to do to make you understand?? How much suffering must I take??'
Wow the last two minutes sound like no tears left to cry
I was not the only one who thought that!!!
OMG 3 people in the world finds the last minutes of this (since 11:47) as the most beautiful and inspiring piece of music ever written!
What on Earth is "no tears left to cry" supposed to be, just for the sake of curiosity?

Omuamua. This is the living proof of coming out of a dream with a happy ending.

A partir de minuto 5 se siente una perfecta mezcla de tristeza y alegría. Me hace llorar de gozo
the end is insane, for me that's the best part
Love this piece!!!

Esta musica me recuerda a mi niñez, mi padre la ponía en el carro cuando viajábamos...
The Northumbrian pipes part has never left my brain since 1975

it left mine in the intervening years but glad it found its way back.
Mistake. The credits went to herbie who recorded a session on the Northumbrian pipes but the track wasn’t used. So well done Paddy Maloney
I couldn’t agree more.❤️
On Lord it's the messiah himself
7:12 starts my favourite part.
For me at 10:9
maestro....
'Ommadawn' is a phonetic of 'Amadán' in Irish, which means fool, so the chorus of 'tá amadán ag dul', means 'The fool is coming'.
Album sovrumano, Mike genio assoluto
Mike 'e un genio assolutissimo! :D
Une des belles musiques du spectacle Hier un village à Flagnac ❤️

obra maestra., otra más de Mike.

Horseback is a separate song, added on to the piece to fill the 2nd side of the album.
Hey Jose!!! Where's the rest of it?!?! That's not the complete part 2!
Part 3 is the best
{bravo}
Better than Tubular Bells imo
fuck he is so talented
10:09 - 11:46... Done!
Agree! I pearl within a pearl.
❤give it try . Play it long😢🎉

It's a hidden track, not credited on the album sleeve but should be included tbh like the gash captain Birdseye ending to Tubular Bells.
