This is why I love youtube. Back in the early 90s I really had to search our books and people to teach me this stuff. Now it's all conveniently put into one video. What a cool guy!

Love what you guys have been doing. The average enthusiast who wants to get into micro broadcasting often needs a hand with some of the technical aspects. You've been a blessing to all of us in pirate radio land by providing equipment and tutorials. Keep up the good work, and a big "thank you" from free speech proponents and micro broadcasters everywhere!

In the 1990's I was "R. Scott Communications". I built & sold 100's of Low-Power FM Broadcast Transmitters (mono & stereo, 5-25 watts) plus RF Amps. It was so cool to see these micro stations popping up all over the U.S. & Canada! I am pleased to see Stephen is still at it....also Wavemach Comm of Canada. Rock On Brothers!! (PS: Maybe I should go back on the Air....I still have a 25 Watt Unit...haha! Thanks for posting this video!

The best application for the transmitter shown in this video is a pub that does live gigs, as it helps get punters through the door while acting as a showcase for new talent and as a common courtesy for the fans who can't come to see their favourite bands because they're sick or working.

oh and the antenna was tuned to my frquency (93.9 MHz) - it had two plates which had to be aligned at the bottom , I forget now where I got the antenna from but it was great - you could tune it using a SWR meter no problems but that was a bit "hit and miss" trial and error but there was a machine which would help i think it was "veronica kits" or something the guy tuned it all for me - top fella :)

  • @purplemutantas

It's an MFJ-259B. On VHF it covers up to 170 MHz. So it will cover the FM broadcast band. Not the cheapest thing around; but it's an excellent piece of test equipment. Worth every penny I payed for it.
You can always boost the power of the transmitter, but more power is not a substitute for a crappy antenna. 10 watts and a good antenna should be fine. On 2 meter FM I can reach a guy 6.5 miles away using only 5 watts. It works because we both have good antennas.

The problem is that it was weeks ago that I put it together - minus the final + copper. I didn't finish it and power it until last week and when I did the final got instantly hot and the LED came on for a few seconds then faded to nothing. There was no mod on the carrier freq ether. The soldering portion of this was super easy, however there was some differences in what was in the directions, on the silkscreen, and on the parts sheet (with components taped to it). I can't remember specifically.

Are there any plans to create a variable-wattage transmitter? It would be nice to go from 1/2W, 2W, 5W, to 10W on the fly as needed. Does this unit provide stereo with pilot? Also, it would be nice to have the ability to inject RDS or other subcarriers into the chip before the RF output.

It depends on a number of factors. One factor is your antenna. A good antenna makes a difference. Ham radio operators can get some pretty impressive distances on VHF FM using low power. It all comes down to the antennas. Dipoles are fine antennas. On the 2 meter ham band J poles are pretty popular. An FM broadcast J pole would be simple enough. Just make sure the antenna is properly tuned so you don't damage the transmitter. I have an MFJ antenna analyzer I use for my ham antennas. (continued)

I really dislike PLL frequency control because I have had bad experiences with it on tuners, but do like that fact it helps with drift and stability. Do you use a BA1404 combo chip and a 19khz pilot crystal for stereo carrier?

I run all silver soldered tinned rf coils in my low pass filters one on my exciter or transmitter another LPF on the PA. I have a flat match with all forward Wattage covering over 15 solid miles in stereo and very clean... no distortion I also run two dbx-163 compressors limiters.. to keep my audio at an even tempered level...

    Re: 6watt rev 2
How stable would you say said circuit is? I'm new to the game, I've built but one transmitter to date and got it working but found that the capacitance was easily swayed any movement would knock it out of tune. PLL does interest me, but I think it may be a tad too advanced for me as of yet.

Is it possible to get a link to the schematic? How would I disable the pre-emphasis. I am interested in this unit. I may just buy the kit then replace the dip-switches with a micro-controller (arduino or something similar) so that I can change the freq quickly if needed and have the freq on an LCD. Also, can you recommend a el-cheapo deviation monitor? Does this unit have anything to control over deviation, or is it up to the user to run a limiter?

Is this a STABLE DRIFT-FREE transmitter?
If you tune a radio to it's frequency, will it stay on that frequency and not drift off? Does it work
equally well on the old-style ANALOG string-type radios as well as digital FM receivers?
The tiny 2-transistor bug-type FM wireless mics always fall off the frequency and you lose the
    signal entirely.
Also, do you need special FCC license to use this transmitter for home office or factory use?

Really, what you need to design is a simple AM transmitter that can be built in prison, from AM radio parts. Its been done before by inmates, not hard to do. I wanted to set up a pirate radio station in prison but didn't have my own AM radio to butcher for parts, as I never got shuffled around to one where you could buy it on the store. I suppose I could of bought one second hand but I was thinking more along the lines of a simpler spark gap transmitter, and also, um, just surviving day to day.

Then I could build Just about anything.. I also recently bought an Arduino Uno I wonder if that could be of any use. I m still trying to learn how to program it though.. I am just exploring this RF stuff it is learning

Find a commercial UHF mobile/base radio and use that. You could get upto 25watts on something like that, however you should know that audio quality will take a hit because these only run at 12.5khz whereas FM broadcast is 75khz...

sorrym this isn't my site but FYI I put a decent antenna on my rig after my dipole went kaput - basically mine had the standard output screw-on socket and I just screwed my (new) vertical antenna straight in, after checking that the cable soldering was perfect, firstly checked the TX on a dummy load to make sure it was ok, I used a normal Citizen's Band (27MHz) SWR meter to check the Standing Wave Ratio and it was good, about 1:1.15, I had a 7Watt rig but the antenna gave me like 14Watts e.r.p.

Actually depends on how far you're away from the transmitter and how strong their signal is (and of course yours). Let's say you've got a 10w transmitter, then you'll probably not be able to kick off a professional 50kW station, even if it's 40km away from your transmitter.

The best things to do to increase range are either get a more powerful amplifier, get a better antenna (if it's not already tuned to the frequency you would be broadcasting at), and arguably the most important thing is to put your antenna as high up as possible, which will allow the signal to go further.

I'm not an EC geek but to my understanding, the cable going to the antenna carries RF signal, not audio, hence the sound amplifier cannot process or amplify that signal. I tried this some time ago and it did not work. You will need an RF amplifier, not a sound amplifier.

I rather hear that crazy train than that tacky little music you have here. I like your work man. I assembled a kit in early 90's , a "panaxis" kit at 1/2 watt but I think I like your kit better. I might want to get your kit in time , so let me know if you have any available.
