I got through 10 minutes and couldn’t keep going. I found Dakota’s portrayal insufferable
Yeah it was very bad
I am going to indulge myself and rant again about this movie because I am STILL NOT OVER IT, every time this movie comes up I'm STILL like "Holy crap, that movie, it was so hilariously, beautifully bad!" I have rarely seen a film that was to me so bad it's good, that's not really my thing. Persausion was my so bad it's TERRIFIC movie.
Lady Russel legit said, "abandon all hope" like a supervillain and she's supposed to be the loving, kind friend? What a melodramatic line with no subtlety, a line Jane Austen would never have written. Jane Austen also would not have Anne talk repeatedly about how it's been eight years since she's seen Wentworth till I laughed aloud. To paraphrase a quote from Jennifer Helinek, my favorite booktuber, "this book [film] has reminded us so many times that she is alone, and this is like putting up a sign with flashing letters saying to 'feel sorry for her.'" (Helinek was talking about the book Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine but this quote is perfect). On another note, how can you dance to Beethoven "alone in" your "room with a bottle of red" Miss Eliot, there are no gramophones, you are living in the *Regency Era*! The costumes were mixed. I loved some of them, like Sir Walter's costumes. A lot of them though, particularly Anne's, were so modern they took me out of the film. Further, the speech Wentworth gives to Ann Eliot while at the beach, entirely made up out of thin air from what I remember, is so modern and feministic it is almost anachronistic, since when did people at the beginning of the 19th century tell women they would have made good sea captains and make silly speeches about how freespirited they are?
I could go on. But I will say I did like lines like when Mary said she was so ill she could "feel" her "organs decomposing" that was mildly funny. I thought the talking to the camera was overdone, unlike what little I've seen of Fleabag (I have to finish it someday because it's great). It was funny when Anne predicted what Mary would do and say, but then she counted on her fingers to the camera what Mary did and said. It seemed like overkill. The film didn't seem to know when enough was enough, it kept adding all these jokes and new lines and a lot of them were so bad. What a movie. As you say, we were wrong, everyone else's reaction to the trailer was right, the movie, "truly is a mess" as you say.
Such a missed opportunity 😢
@@RachelsReviews It truly is. We don't tend to get a lot of big-budget, star-powered Jane Austen adaptations so when one misses this badly it's a pity.
At least Cosmo Jarvis is finding success with Shogun.
Awesome rant Rachel, this was the most BORING movie I sat through in 2022. This is not a worthy adaptation of Jane Austin's work, Madame Web was a better Dakota Johnson movie than this!
I don't know if I'd go that far but it is bad
I believe the actress, Dakota, also does an awful job at fleshing out characters.
Yeah the character they gave her was a mess but she's not great either
@@RachelsReviews the character is literally Iconic written by an iconic writer. She, Dakota is the problem as she sucks at acting lol don’t blame the character.
well this version of the character was poorly written and nothing like Jane Austen's Ann
@@RachelsReviews You’re right
