Although Wentworth was extrememly hurt by Anne's betrayal/refusal in the book he comes across as aloof and angry at Anne. He tries to make Anne jealous by flirting with the girls and rub her nose in what a mistake she has made letting her go. He is not tender and caring until the end when he admits his mistake in not taking his chances with Anne again when he had the chance. This version of the book made him show his hurt and regret from nearly their first encounter, which is not what the author intended. IMO he wasn't handsome enough to be Wentworth. Sorry Cosmo.

@@kevinrussell1144 I think its because he is charming and they didnt show that he was a villian.. he liked Anne but was with the other lady to get her away from the dad so he wouldnt have an heir and Harry character - Mr. Elliot would gain the Elliot family title.

@@TheGollyLlama Cosmo had a tough job. This screenplay has him too weak and needy; he does NOT come across as a decisive, stoic sea captain. He even is directed to say that Anne would make a great naval commander. Wentworth (and Jane Austin) would NEVER have said OR thought this. AND he's shorter than Mr. Golding. These are casting and screenplay errors, not the fault of JA.

  • @anropelser2133

I think the problem with this adaptation is the script; there's not enough of the original dialogue. Dakota Johnson is great but they miss too much of the original story, which makes her character seem superficial and you don't understand where the characters are coming from. And the actor who plays Wentworth doesn't quite work in the role although I like him in general. No chemistry, Anne has more chemistry with Elliot in this film.

@@tracys169 Actually, Trace, you could have made a true anachronistic rom-com from your idea. Anne could dump Wentworth (again), Wm. Elliot could marry Anne and keep Mrs. Clay on the side, and Walter Elliot could either come out of the closet or take up "housekeeping" with Lady Russell. Hijinx would erupt. I guess Admiral Croft and spouse would "be at sea", but what did they do except defend the country from the Frogs? Wink and nod!!

This film was great as it showed the main plot storyline of Anne and Wentworth getting a second chance at love and a relationship and Anne finding her true friends and family as well as standing up to her family. For me at least we didn’t need all the extra dialogue about Henrietta’s wedding or the Mrs Smith character or whatever scheme Anne’s father was planning or the slow progression and melancholy feel of the book. I understand that some book readers love every single detail to be in an adaptation or to have at least 75% percent of the book material and that it shouldn’t be changed and there is one Persuasion the 1970 adaption that is a verbatim of the book and it is 4hrs long and it’s super dry and even worse. But I am sure that there people out there who like and enjoy the 1970 Persuasion adaptation .

Sorry, this movie version was just awful, it made no sense.
They did Anne and Captain Wentworth, and their true deep feelings for each other, so wrong.
They even changed the letter at the end, which is one of the most romantic and heartfelt love letters of literature.
Read the book a few times and the letter always gets me weak and melt away.
In this version I couldn't really feel a serious deep connection between the two.

It is astonishing, how BAD this movie was. Leaving aside the fact that it has nothing to do with the book by Jane Austen, the movie itself was simply boring, bad storytelling, we are constantly being TOLD stuff, nothing much ever gets SHOWN. When did we lose faith in our actors. Are they not able to show emotion and internal conflict? Do we constantly have to have someone who TELLS us everything? Add to that that a sassy, bitchy, mopey, no filter, inner-15-year-old like Dakotanne would never be persuaded to give up Wentworth, nor is she sweet or kind or particularly apt in emergencies the way she is portrayed in this movie. She is constantly rude, not only in her thought to the camer, but also directly, outspokenly to everyone else around her. Then we get TOLD how lovely and kind she is. I mean: Where?! Nothing there makes sense! If you change a character so entirely, you can't stick to original character traits mentioned in the book and have people proclaim them. Total disconnect.
BUT the cinematography is amazing. Beautiful landscape shots.

@absolutelynot: We're not haters, we are commenting, just like you. And yes, the movie really WAS that bad, if we're speaking of translating the essence of Persuasion to the screen. DJ is a lovely woman, the film (as film) was beautiful, and the cast was top drawer. The problem was the screenplay and the showrunners decisions to change the motivations and moral compass of most characters to Greenwich Village 2020 from Bath 1815.
I'm happy it made you laugh. I did, too, but probably not for the same reason.

Well after watching the Persuasion Netflix movie many times and comparing it to other screen adaptations, I have to conclude that the actress that is the main role-Dakota just can’t act in romance movies. She was horrible in 50 shades of gray, no chemistry there and so no chemistry in this romance movie either. She can do comedy however and that is what she is doing here, but this movie is no comedy, it’s a drama.

I think this movie is SOOO bad, so woke, so annoying, so unfaithful to the vision of Jane Austen, but Dakota is so hot! Too bad Wentworth was played by slightly-animated cardboard. Was he a spineless wimp in the novel, or more of the pseudo-rugged Cigar-store-Native American type?

  • @mohammadnoorani6342

Everything was off key and not quite right in this film. They violated Jane Austin in a brutal way😂 , I guess it's because of insistence on having a female director and crew. I'm sure they were very insistent on that rather than qualified people separate from their gender.

Hush, MN; you're NEVER supposed to express such an opinion. I don't agree with you, however. Carrie C. is talented and bright enough to make a good movie; this movie is visually top drawer. The problem is the message, what's she's done to the essence of Persuasion. The color-focused casting has NO bearing on this either. The fault lies in the screenplay, not in the stars.
