Not only that, but when she was introduced to the staff working on the movie they thought she looked so beautiful that they drew Yocheved, Moses mother, to look like her. And like you said, she sang in multiple languages, it varies depending on which source you go to, but it was somewhere around 17 to 18 which included French, German, Finnish, Italian, Polish, Swedish, Hebrew and more. Fun fact (well actually not so fun):
There’s a reason that every time an Angel appears in the Bible (or Torah), the Angel has to tell humans “do not be afraid.”
In spite of what popular culture may have you believe, Angels were not simply winged people in white robes with halos over their heads. The formless mist of light that we see in this movie is much more accurate to what angels were actually supposed to look like. They were eldritch, horrifying creatures, at least to us humans. This one in particular, as we see in the movie, is none other than the Angel of Death.

"At first, he couldn't even grow a beard!"
It's not that he couldn't grow one. So hair in ancient Egyptian culture is a really interesting thing. It was a symbol of your status, and important men in Egyptian culture shaved their heads and beards and wore wigs made out of other people's hair as a symbol of their complete authority over them. The women wore wigs too, but they had their own hair underneath.
The style of the hair tells everyone who looks at you what your station in life is. In the beginning of the movie, Rameses is wearing what Egyptologists call "The sidelock of youth," which would have been his own hair, but that style is depicted EXCLUSIVELY on royal children. So it's interesting too that he still wears it when he's older (but before he becomes Pharaoh), and it says A LOT about how his father views him that he still wears his hair like that at that age.

I love how much love the two brothers have even in disagreement. As cinema therapy states, the hate stems from their bond.
The song “the plague” does an excellent job of depicting the true theme if the story. Two brothers pitted against each other are separated by pride. All Ramses had to do was let go of his ego and create a bridge but he spent his whole life failing to impress his father, he could not let that go.
It still killed me that parents had to lose their first kids, sons in the way they did. The slaves were treated horribly, but children are innocent and cannot comprehend what the adults are doing. The mistreatment of the slaves including them being killed as babies and the kids dying right next to the parents killed me equally.

Yes. It is tragic, the consequences poor leadership can have upon one's own people. Particularly when that leadership leads its people astray. But two comforts can be taken:
      1. The manner in which they passed was the most peaceful anyone can go. To have their life force gently drawn out of their body while asleep, by the God who first created them.
      2. The firstborn children of Egypt were too young to be responsible for their sins. So they would be allowed to join God in paradise following the Passover.

I like how this film focuses on the delicate relationship of Moses and Rameses, and how strong the message is. I wish I got the chance to experience this film in cinemas. The animation, the story, and the soundtrack (songs and score) are truly amazing!

From a Jew's perspective, this movie as well as Joseph: King of Dreams will always hold a special place in my heart. I grew up moving around a lot, and as such, never had a stable congregation at a Shul (synagogue) for more than a couple years at a time. But these movies always accompanied me and they always held a dear place in my heart and in my faith. Wherever I went I could always find people who loved and adored these movies just as much as I did for almost all the same reasons I did- even if we weren't of the same faith. As someone who is tired of hearing about the fights and arguments between faiths and who is still a practicing Jew, I cannot express in words how amazing and wonderful it is to be able to communicate with people not of the same faith (and also people who are of the same faith) through a masterpiece of a movie. It doesn't matter that our faiths are different or our stories differ slightly- we all love and enjoy this movie as well as its prequel and instead of getting into arguments about where things differ or have changed, we can appreciate the beauty in the story and the characters as well as the music and visual. One of my favorite memories is sitting down with some of my Christian and Atheist friends to watch it on Passover (a tradition that has been in my family since it came out) when they came to celebrate it with us, and to be able to discuss with them the story and the themes- but also to be of help and translate the Hebrew and point out details that perhaps those not of the Jewish faith might have missed or dismissed. It is just an amazing movie and its prequel is equally as amazing (if unfortunately a little short) and I could go on and on about it!
So thank you for your reaction to it and I am so glad that you enjoyed watching it! Please keep going and stay safe and healthy! Wishing you well and a happy thanksgiving (and Hannukah [even if you don't celebrate it])!

Quick notes on the story of Moses:
-After 400 years of slavery, Moses is born
-Moses' timeline is better understood in three stages that each lasted 40 years
-First stage of Moses' life was growing up as "a prince of Egypt" which lasted for the first 40 years of his life
-Second stage would be when he leaves Egypt and lives with his new family, God speaks to him through the burning bush, the confrontation with the new Pharoh of Egypt, and the parting of the Red Sea, all before he was 80
-Third stage was him and the Israelites wandering the desert for 40 years before "dying" and never seeing the promised land ("dying" is in quotation marks as his body was never buried nor found so there are reasons to believe that God took him, full-body and soul)

One of the great things about this movie is how true to the biblical text it stays in most things. The older "The Ten Commandments" strays much further from the text, and tends to embellish or ignore important details, as does many other movies based on biblical stories.
    Still, there are some differences:
Miriam (Moses' sister) didn't leave Moses after she saw he had arrived safely - she actually stepped forward and told the Egyptian princess that she could help find a wet nurse for the baby - his mother.
Since Moses had his own mother as a wet nurse, the idea that he didn't know his own heritage is silly. But it makes for good drama, so it is a forgivable embellishment.
When Moses killed a man, he wasn't a hot-headed teen. He was 40 years old, and the murder was described to be a planned act of revenge (for the cruel treatment of a Hebrew).
Moses didn't meet Zipporah (his wife) before he got to Midjan.
When Moses encountered the burning bush he was 80! He would have looked old, but still quite strong - he lived to be 120 after all.
Aaron ran to meet Moses on his way to Egypt. How he managed to slip away is not mentioned in the text, but he did so after having a vision from God.
Moses and Aaron met with the leaders of the Hebrews before heading to Pharaoh, and they went to talk to him together (Zipporah probably didn't follow them there, but some of the Hebrew leaders might have).
Aaron was the one doing most of the talking. Moses admits to having difficulty speaking, so God appointed Aaron to speak on Moses' behalf. In the time after leaving Egypt, Moses has quite a few speeches to his people without Aaron, so he probably got better at public speaking over the years.
Moses got told by God to do the next plague well in advance each time. For instance, he was told to turn the Nile into blood the night before he did that.
It's more of an omission in the movie, but the first 3 plagues hit all of Egypt, whereas the rest spared the area where the Hebrews lived.
The pillar of fire was there from the moment they left Egypt - it was a pillar of smoke by day, and a pillar of fire by night. It served as a beacon moving in front of the Hebrews to show everyone what way to go. When Pharaoh showed up, it jumped behind the camp and blocked the way.
Moses was not surprised when Pharaoh and his army showed up. God had told him this would happen, and actually led the Hebrews into a "dead end" to goad Pharaoh into making a stupid attack.
Pharaoh died with his army - the original text makes that very clear.
The Pharaoh is not named - but he was certainly not Rameses II, who lived much later. In fact, no Pharaoh is named in either Genesis or Exodus. (There was a Pharaoh who is known to have died by drowning - and he died around the time this story takes place, so make of that what you will)

I have also heard that it's likely Moses didn't have a brother, but the Pharoah was childless and they were probably praying to their gods for a son. One of their gods was the river god, so when Moses was 'brought by the river' they would've seen it as a sign rather than kling him because he was a Hebrew.

The moment where Moses says " Goodbye, brother " in the end is more powerful in the french version because in France we have two ways to say " Goodbye " :
" Au revoir " If we go and come back long time after and " Adieu " when we never come back

This is maybe my favorite animated movie of all time as it was so well done and the music is so powerful. When you mentioned the music reminds you of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" there is a very good reason. While Hans Zimmer wrote the score to it, Stephen Schwartz wrote most of the songs. He is responsible for many things including the musical Wicked and films for Disney such as "Pocahontas" and yes "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 2 роки тому

Schwartz wrote the lyrics to Alan Menken's music for *Hunchback* and *Pocahontas.* For *Prince of Egypt* he wrote music and lyrics for all the songs. What Zimmer wrote is the underscoring and background music. This is not Schwartz's first faith-based musical, as he also wrote music and lyrics for *Godspell* (which became a movie in 1973), for the stage show *Children of Eden,* and contributed lyrics to Leonard Bernstein's concert-performance art piece *Mass.* He also wrote music and lyrics for a number of other stage shows including not only *Wicked,* but also *Pippin,* *The Magic Show,* *The Baker's Wife,* and *Working,* as well as lyrics to Charles Strouse's music for *Rags.*

This movie is a historical masterpiece. I especially love the campy opening of Moses and Ramses being reckless. I love how it seems funny and innocent because it fits in perfectly with Moses being oblivious to the severity of how they're treating the slaves. They abuse others for their own luxury and fun.
Also, watch El Dorado next. It's also a masterpiece but in a more comedic memey sense. Like Shrek.

    Some things to note:
    1. Moses was in Midian for a few decades. By the time he returned to Egypt, he had two full-grown sons.
    2. Moses was, iirc, Levi's great-grandson, so their time in captivity wasn't too terribly long. A couple generations at most.
    3. The mixed multitude that came out of Egypt, which included both Hebrews and Egyptians, was at least a couple million people.
    4. That fish was definitely not a whale. You can see that the tail is moving side-to-side instead of up-and-down. Something that size? Probably a freaking megalodon.

Some stories would probably need more characters and plot to make a story into a movie (the telling of it is but a few verses but with so much packed in that could leave a lot to the imagination of what actually went down).
But Moses is already such a rich and such a packed story with so much content that they could have 100% stayed exactly according to biblical details and had plenty of of plot and conflict.
      Just my thought.
The movie is still one of my most favorites ever.

Sad fact: Because Stephen Schwartz stated that he wanted to work on the music for this film after he said he signed on to do the music for Disney's "Mulan," the Disney president wanted him to choose them or their competitor. I'll always wonder what his version or "Mulan" would've been like (not sure about his song "China Doll," though)...

While there are probably a few animated films centered around Bible stuff (many of them tied to VeggieTales), there's also a musical I'd highly recommend you listen to called Children of Eden. The music is by Stephen Schwartz (who also did the music for Prince of Egypt) and it goes through both the stories of Adam and Eve (act 1) as well as Noah's Ark (act 2).
