This was Dreamworks's first traditional, hand-drawn animated musical. So, they went *all*-out. They knew they needed to make a *big* impression. And, by God, they did.
That’s still my favorite Dreamworks movie.

@@Kerenscardi Well, no. That’s very much not what I said. Just with this story, it’s pretty unfair that Moses doesn’t get to get into paradise in the end. Also the whole Lot and his daughters story - couldn’t make a musical about that one.
But this particular part of the story and the film make a great story.
@@83gemm Moses didn't get to go to the promised land because he disobeyed God. He did things his own way in the desert and before that as well, as did so many others and the price for that was that they lost out on their opportunity to see the promised land. I don't think it meant that he wasn't allowed into Heaven. He did have faith in God and I do believe that he repented of what he did wrong. None of us has ever been perfect and God has always known that, and that's why He sent Jesus to die on the cross for us. To give us a way to get to HIm and to save us. He loves us that much and this was always his plan. He just had to lay down the foundation for it first by giving Moses the Ten Commandments first.

The Prince of Egypt is one of the best depictions of this story that I have seen. The animators spent 2 years working on the water animation to make the Red Sea moment as epic as possible. Another fun fact, Ralph Fiennes voiced Rameses! He was Voldemort in Harry Potter too! Thanks for reacting to this and showing it some appreciation!
Spielberg used a lot of his connections with the Shoah foundation after making Shindler's list to consult on this adaption all the way through, and you really feel it in every frame.

There are closet trannes in the cast and this is a gospel production...This is off limits and blasphemous. Study up on how they have been hiding this truth from everyone: they can easily mimick the voice and--while not easily--they can mimick the look enough to pass. Most of the skeletal markers will remain(most notably the back/middle area of the body and no photo should exist that is atypical of the person that they are claiming to be). Some are very good passers: Jessie AIbah(original F4 movie), Vannessa Willyums(former Miss America and common actress over the years), Hallie Berry(X-men's Storn plus many other roles), Emily Proctor(CSI), Gail O'Grady(B-movie quean), and Marg Helgenberger(CSI) are great examples, but their skeletons belie who they claim to be. And, age usually reveals the deception(apparent men turn into grannies and apparent women turn into grandpas).
From my experience, the number 1 indicator is the back(since you almost never see the private region in someone else), but many have clear skulls, shoulders, and middle area that are not indicative of what they claim! The true middle area may be revealed in bikini or beach photos. NOTE: Most men will have Adam's apple from puberty, but this can be shaven down greatly and, also, they medically inhibit puberty. My AA, however, is not visible nor can I feel it in my neck and I am a guy! There have to be some guys like me. But, my shoulders are very wide(probably about as big as anyone outside of a giant) and I have mule jaw! And, men can have fake hips/butts/bellies added on to mimick womanhood. And, don't be fooled by the added muscles of those born as women. There are PEDs to produce this result. Other ways they trick us is by photoshopping images, corset training*, and the changing of someone's image in a magazine. No photo/video should exist that is atypical of who they claim; it should not exist!
*This can temporarily create female curves.
Things to be noted.
First, the final plague was unique among others because God was actually gonna have the Pharaoh choose the final plague. The Pharaoh was not aware of this, but Moses was which only makes that scene worse. You can tell Moses wants to stop Ramasese before he says something he can’t take back. This was what lead to the killing the firstborn.
However, final plague wasn’t just the firstborn “children.” It’s the firstborn. Firstborn Adults, firstborn animals, even plants. the FIRSTBORN!
In a time where the firstborn played a huge part in politics, marriages, etc.
It was pretty bad.
It is extremely sad and should not be ignored, but just as a reminder, because so many people miss the point, remember that the Egyptians had enslaved the Hebrews (who were originally their allies before enslavement) for years on end, killing plenty in the process.
The Nile turning into blood was actually a reminder to the Egyptians, “Hey, remember ya’ll coming and killing all the Hebrew Babies? Butchering them? Throwing them in the Nile to be eaten? This is a quick reminder of that.”
This is not God killing the Egyptians for nothing, and it’s not even God wanting to play executioner like many people think. It’s just justice, straightforward as that.
Even then, God pays this back with his own Son (Jesus) dying on the cross as the last sacrifice.
I felt the blood in the Nile is the same blood from the children they dumped in the river. Like a "hey, you get the bathe in the blood of the children you killed"

Ramasese the 3rd would later go on to be killed in the "Harem Conspiracy". Possibly arranged by his second wife. Supposedly the latter half of his long reign was in fact a decline for Egypt. Exodus or no his reign never got better.
Wait, so why didn’t Ramses die too then? Wasn’t he the firstborn as well? Are there previous children we’re not told about who just didn’t make it past infancy? Or was a special exception made just for him?

The Prince of Egypt is truly one of Dreamworks' masterpieces. Over 350 artists worked on it, and when it came out it was the most expensive film in all history of cinema. Inside Dreamworks they had taken the making of The Prince of Egypt so seriously that no mistakes were accepted, anyone who was no longer competent to work on this film was moved to work on Dreamworks' B-series project as punishment. It's funny that that "inferior" project was Shrek.
In any case, in every frame of this film you can see the commitment and dedication to this work, and it is beautiful.
It honestly is ahead of its time… The use of CGI to complement the hand-drawn animation is seamless. It looks good and convincing even by today’s standards
I mean, Shrek is an inferior project no matter how you look at it, no matter how much you may enjoy it… It’s a shame that it ended up overshadowing its predecessor so thoroughly in the public eye

Shrek is an out-and-out family comedy, and doesn’t try to be anything else, while PoE is a more serious animated musical/drama
I am not even remotely a follower of an Abrahamic religion, but "The Prince of Egypt" is hands down, objectively just a fantastic masterpiece.

wow I was not expecting this reaction! Everything about this movie was so good. A masterpiece. AND THE MUSIC. 10/10. There's another movie that's also animated by DreamWorks and is based on the Bible. It's called Joseph: King of Dreams. I definitely recommend y'all watch that too! It came out 2 years after The Prince of Egypt

Moses didn't do any of it. He didn't bring the punishments. God gave Ramses the opportunity to let them go. He could have at any point in the plagues. Ramses chose the punishment that God smote them with. He named it.
Not true. The book of Exodus said 3 times that God hardened the heart of Pharaoh.
@Cannibal Teddy God always gives us free will, but He also knows how much a human heart can be hardened if they don't listen to Him. It was always Pharaohs' choice to let the Hebrews go or not, and since he chose not to he suffered the consequences of his decisions.

@@jamesfowler5100 no the scriptures say that Pharaoh's heart was already hardened. He would not relent so the LORD hardened, in that context meaning strengthened, Pharoah's resolve. I believe it wasn't until the 3rd or 4th plague that the LORD hardened his heart. God gave him up to his own stubbornness just as later on He would do to His own people because they refused to obey His ways and chose their own way even though He is the one who delivered them from the hands of pharaoh.

@@nathancruz9172 it is! Wish I saw it in theaters, but I was born in 2000. I did however watch it for the first time last year with my grandma through an Amazon Prime rental, and we loved it! I actually bought it on DVD last month at a mall while Christmas shopping with a friend; I plan to watch it again around Holy Week. If this ends up getting a Fathom event for the 25th anniversary next year, I’m definitely going to buy a ticket!
The voice actor for Rameses is actually Ralph Fiennes, and he plays a perfect antagonist with that voice.
He also plays the main antagonist in Schindler's List, as a Nazi General of some sort and he does an incredible job.
He also plays Voldemort throughout the Harry Potter series.
So he's got a well versed 'bad guy' voice, lol.

Is that a "touch" or is that just cuz Americans feel royalty = British and because it's an American movie it needs you to identify with the Hebrews so it gives them American accents.

Cast in this show was astounding too. Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Patrick Stewart, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Martin, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Helen Mirren.
Fun fact, there were 2 10 Commandments. The ending scene cut to black with the Ten Commandments right before Moses slammed them into the ground in rage upon seeing what his people are doing when he came down from the mountain lol.

I think this movie did a perfect set up. You could see the bond between them, and you can see that their father and mother loved them very much, but that couple seconds of his father saying "One weak link can break a chain of a great dynasty" cemented Ramses fear of being weak. And when Moses came back it wasn't for him but for the slaves. I heard Ramses's story was originally more tragic and they had to turn it down. I also heard some Christians hated them showing the good relationship between the two and rather Ramses be pictured as evil and Moses steadfast. As a Catholic myself, I believe that they would have had affection for one another. Growing up as siblings, how could you not? And watching the people you grow up with suffer would be a heavy mental toll as long as you aren't a psychopath.

My brother and I watched this movie for years and even acted it out growing up (I played Rameses)
But now when I watch it, each time Moses says “goodbye brother” for the last time, I break down crying.
The reason this movie resonates so much is BECAUSE it's a human story more than a bible story by portraying the characters complexly. Rameses wasn't some caricature "evil bad guy," he was a man, flaws and all. It felt REAL, because THEY felt real.
I can't believe people were trying to simply portray Rameses as "simply the bad guy" is what I'm getting at

Just for context at the end there:
Moses having the 10 Comm, means he's either about to see everyone worshiping a golden calf, or he's already broken the first set and had to get a second copy.
Yeah, not a high point in his leading career...
But he went off the mountain with hope so I guess it counts as a good ending
I believe it's the second time since Moses is alone (Joshua isn't with him) and he only has two stone tablets. (And, you could argue his face is glowing during this scene, which supports the second time as well.)
It makes the swelling of the reprise of Deliver Us at that part even more moving. It's like, "Yes, we have erred in terrible folly. We are lost. Deliver us."
Truth!
As someone who watches this movie from from a secular mindset, the animation and soundtrack are amazing. I still have the cd somewhere in an old binder. The opening song still gives me full body goosebumps and makes me teary eyed, it's so beautifully done. Rip Ofra Haza, what an incredible voice she had.

Being an ardent Catholic Christian myself, I watched this movie with my family the day before yesterday. My sister didn't want it at first, as she thought it would be a cheap, boring Biblical movie. By the end of the opening she was already crying her heart out at this masterpiece, along with all of us.
To be fair, in the actual story, Moses didn’t have a choice. After he killed the Egyptian, the Pharaoh wanted Moses killed and he had to flee because a Hebrew had killed an Egyptian.

But also, did you notice that the one snake from Moses’ staff ATE the ones from the priests? You can see it in the shadows. And that part is in the Bible as well. 🤗

I'm an atheist and I freaking love this movie. It has so much, even if you don't like the religious parts, it a beautiful story, the animation is fantastic, and I love the dynamic between the brothers. I thought that was a smart move on the filmmakers part, emphasizing how close they were. It's very much a tragedy. And like, one part people overlook is the fact that Rameses' son is basically Moses' nephew. It wasn't just faceless children that were killed but a child that in a different life that he would have been close with. It's very much heartbreaking.
Another great moment is when Aaron is the first to go into the Red Sea after doubting Moses for the whole film. He finally accepts Moses and trusts him wholeheartedly. Gah this movie is amazing.

An absolute masterpiece... The soundtrack, animation, cast... Always brings a tear to my eyes. Incredible choice.
As a person who saw this at a very young age, I can definitely say that it impacted how seriously I treat empathy and trying to see things from the perspective of others. For me Ramisis was a castionary tale of how much stubbornness and hubris can cost you.
Then you learned the Lesson God wanted to Teach Rameses.
The entire Purpose of God choosing Moses as a Messenger was because Rameses was too prideful and Stubborn to listen to God.
Every time Moses told Pharaoh to let his people go, Rameses would stubbornly claim Egypt’s gods were mightier, and so each and every plague was a direct refutation of the Egyptian gods, to show they were merely powerless idols.
Finally, the Last Wonder, the Angel of Death; was brought upon Rameses by his own mouth. He proclaimed that he is pharaoh, and only he can control the life and death of the Hebrews, and to prove it, he would kill every firstborn Hebrew..
For his Cruelty and pride, God demonstrated that only God gives life, and Only God has the Right to take that life Back.
Right up until the very end, God Gave Rameses a chance to make the Right Choice…
Even at the Pillar of Fire, and the Parting of the Red Sea, when the Hebrews were nearly across the Sea, God Dropped the Pillar, but left the Sea open…
‘Behold my Wonders, is this not enough? Take what’s left of your people and return to the Egypt your Own Choices have Ruined.”
But Rameses… He just Couldn’t *Let It Go…*

Death of the Firstborn
This movie came out right as computer-assisted animation was becoming the norm. It was widely considered to be the last truly great traditionally animated feature. Now a hair over a decade later, Disney would produce The Princess and the Frog via traditional animation, but I don't know if people have reconsidered that 'last great' title in light of that. Personally, as much as I love The Princess and the Frog, it lacks the epic scale of The Prince of Egypt. P&F is great, but PoE is GREATER.
4:24 - "Why are they just killing kids randomly?" Jeez, you DON'T know much from religion, do you? The story of Moses begins with the Hebrew people enslaved by the Egyptians. The Pharaoh felt the slaves were growing too numerous and so declared a purge of newborn males. Then this happened.
7:53 - And now you know what Rameses has driving everything he does in this story. Let me say now that the reason I prefer this version to all the classic cinematic religious epics is that the other versions all focus on the bombast and the spectacle of Moses being the conduit of the power of God, but this version focuses on the humanity of the people God uses as his tools: an important point that most people forget about when they think about Moses and Abraham and Jesus Christ (he may have been the son AND incarnation of God, but he was also human).
12:13 - When you stop and think about this for just a second you realize that Moses probably passed this mural every day of his life and never gave it a second glance. It's only now that he sees it and takes in the full horror of what it depicts.
16:23 - Jethro's speaking voice is Danny Glover (Probably best known for the Lethal Weapon movies). His singing voice is Brian Stokes Mitchell.
17:08 - The movie's been nice so far, but now it's time to get Biblical. LITERALLY!
19:54 - One of the things I love about this scene in particular is the way Hotep and Hoy's performance is so flashy and over-the-top, nobody notices that Moses's staff has EATEN both of the other snakes (a part of the original biblical story meant to demonstrate the dominance of God over the power of the gods of Egypt). I would have loved it if the scene had ended with Moses and Rameses walking off and in the background you hear Hoy say 'Has anyone seen my staff?'
20:03 - That's ACTUALLY how that expression is supposed to sound. It's an admonishment to tell someone that they've been acting strictly amateurish but now they're up against professionals.
21:34 - A little detail here that's easy to miss: the water immediately surrounding Moses doesn't turn into blood. It stays pure water as long as Moses is standing in the river.
21:54 - Time for the most epic number in the movie.
Killing children has nothing to do with religion. Just look at Planned Parenthood.

Honestly, I'm Christian and a lot of Christian know kids learn the story of Moses in a young age and but when I saw this movie it still blew my mind!!! i was in awe.

Seen this amazing film many times since I was a kid. Only now have I realized how great of a voice cast the film had. Val Kilmer as Moses. Ralph Fiennes as Rameses. Michelle Pfeiffer as Tzipporah. Sandra Bullock as Miriam. Jeff Goldblum as Aaron. Patrick Stewart as Pharaoh Seti. Danny Glover as Jethro. They even had Steve Martin and Martin Short playing the two Egyptian high priests. Perfect voice cast if you ask me.

"Through Heaven's Eyes" and "Playing with the Big Boys" are my favorite songs in this film. The whole soundtrack is fire, but those two tracks get me going. The voice cast in this is pretty great too. Didn't hear any comments on it in the YT edit but I hope y'all recognized some of the legends voicing this flick. Also, RIP Ofra Haza. An Israeli singer whose vocals you commented on a few times during the reaction. Incredible singer.
And "When You Believe" won the Oscar in 1999 =)

One of the best movies out there! Moses went through something!!! But it was all worth it
Another religious film I really enjoy is One Night with the King. Its the story Esther, obviously dramatized, but still retold my favorite Bible story very well. It has a romantic focus, but includes other elements, the benefits of war versus peace, valuing family or country more, to cling to faith or to safety, betrayal, sacrifice, genocide (twice), and justice. It flew under the radar, but its probably my favorite movie, and Luke Evans is fantastic in it.
This is one of my all-time favorites, and you can tell how much love went into it.
One of the character choices I thought was interesting is that you can see the disregard Rameses has for people. You see it when he talks about the destroyed temple, the way he treats Zipporah, etc.
I always felt that Seti, at least in this movie, truly felt the weight of the murder of the Hebrew children. It felt like when he was talking about "for the greater good", and that "they were only slaves" were justifications he was using to convince himself otherwise. He still did something incredibly terrible. Yet when Rameses is confronted with the same truth, he scoffs dismissively. He cared more about his own pride than the people he was supposed to protect.
On another note, while you didn't show it, my absolute favorite moments are in "When You Believe", when the little girl helps an elder woman walk to freedom, and then later when the sea is parted and the same elder comforts the little girl. This movie loves its parallels.

The scene of the parting of the Red Sea took the longest part of the animation process. They spared NO expense on making that scene awe-inspiring and truly God-like.
The animators spent 2 full years animating the splitting of the sea and it still stand up for today standards especially for the fact it's a 1990s movie

I'm a Baptist born and raised and I grew up with this film. When I think of the Exodus Story, this is the film that comes to mind. The animation, the music, the cinematography - it's a masterpiece. This is a film that knows less can be more, that if you show the audience rather than add unless dialogue, they'll appreciate it more.
•Population Control- Pharaoh became concern that the Hebrew had become so numerous, that they could potentially rebel. So he ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed.
•Midian girl. Midian is a geographic region referenced in the Bible, located in the northwestern Arabian peninsula, what is today Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
•Biblically, Moses knew he was adopted, as his birth mother was brought to the palace as his nurse.
•Well, the babies would have probably drowned first before the crocodiles came, but yes, death by being thrown into the Nile.
•Jethro's singing is voiced by baritone Brian Stokes Mitchell.
•Moses - born a Hebrew slave, raised as an Egyptian prince, ran away to Midian and became a shepherd, and ultimately called to be the first great prophet of God, the deliverer and lawgiver of the Jewish people.
•When watching the Egyptian high priests, one does not see men of any god, but something more akin to Vegas stage magicians putting on a show.
•Christ turned water into wine; the first plague was turning the Nile into blood.

One interesting aspect of music is that music memory stored in a different part of the brain from everything else. So you can have someone with such advanced Alzheimer's that they can't even remember their own names but you play a song from their childhood and they can sing it word perfect.
The first borns being killed was the only way that Pharaoh would allow the slaves to leave. Moses gave Pharaoh plenty of chances, with lesser plagues, but Pharaoh still refused.
I love this movie, it's visually stunning and the music is amazing. I remember showing this to my parents and they were blown away because they never watched it and never really thought to see it. Great reaction!!

This reminds me of the Pocahontas-and-Lion King situation😅. They couldn't see or appreciate The Lion King's potential during production, whereas Pocahontas was expected to be their next masterpiece; (as in, Little- Mermaid, Beauty-and-the-Beast levels of success. That's the pressure Pocahontas was under.)

In Spanish, bassinets for babies are called Moises or Canasta (de) Moises. Moises is Moses in spanish and canasta is basket.
Each plague God brought upon Egypt was a direct attack on the Egyptian gods. Pharaoh himself was seen as a god and so all their gods (both handmade (statues and images) and physical (Pharoah himself) were unable to protect or do anything for the Egyptian people, vs. The God of the Hebrews who annihilated everything their gods stood for.
Also in the Bible Moses didnt have a chance to speak about the killing of the Egyptian whipping the slave. It says that he was chased out of Egypt because they wanted to kill Moses for his murder. But the movie puts a spin on it for effect while still keeping true to the essence of the Exodus story

Imo the passover scen isthe BEST scene in animation history! I love that they choose to not add music and just have the wind as it passes through and the last breaths of the dying it makes it so much more ominous.
You slightly misinterpreted what God was saying to Moses, it wasn't "shut up and just do it" it's much deeper, it's God telling Moses, "Don't tell me what you can and cannot do, I created you, I know exactly what you are capable of," it's one of the most inspirational quotes from the Old Testament. God believes in you, so believe in yourself as well.
Though granted in the Bible Aaron was sent *with* Moses to confront Pharaoh.
In this particular scene of the dying of the firstborn it shows Moses going off crying what people forget is that the little boy that died was his nephew devastating on its own
