Kaufmann is NOT better than Pavarotti if that's what you're implying. Kaufmann's voice is loud but ugly. He essentially has the timbre and tone color of a baritone which sounds warm and rich in the lower register but lacks the ring and vibrance of Pavarotti in the upper register so sounds very harsh and grating when he gets to the high notes. The only tenor to surpass Pavarotti in "Nessun Dorma" was Franco Corelli who had the power and weight of Kaufmann (especially in the lower register) but the ring and vibrance of Pavarotti.

I stood through a performance of this run -- it was the night Prince Charles attended. After the Nessun Dorma, the guys I was standing with said, "Meet you at the bridge" -- the Golden Gate bridge was famous for committing suicide -- after this, could there be anything better?
This is THE definitive Turandot live, Pav's 1997 version at the Met coming in a very close second. It's a pity that up till now, neither this performance nor the Met one have been released on video. (Actually, there is a short video snippet of Pav hitting the high C in "No no principessa altera" from the Met performance, but that's all - it can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/C61CKzWflFo/v-deo.html) It's been like more than 12 years since Pav passed away and neither SF opera nor the Met have released his Turandot on video... Speaking of the high C, the only versions on video are horrible, with Carreras copping out of the high C in the 1983 Vienna performance, and Domingo doing the same in his 1997 Met performance... please someone from SF or Met, release Pavarotti's COMPLETE Turandot performance on video soon!

BEAUTIFUL LUCIANO!

The glory days of the SF Opera! Kurt Herbert Adler knew how to do opera.
1:22:29 Nessun Dorma
Turandot: music by Puccini; libretto by Adami and Simoni. Lovely melodies, arias, duets and choruses.

Is there a version of this in high quality by chance? Beautiful!!
abrandnewmonarch for 1977 this IS high quality
@@weepinggiraffe Yes! I think they mean studio, but this has been released commercially as it is a house recording, not a "pirate" recording.
Is this version still available on CD or DVD?
It's sad that we have corelli udovick in 1958, yet can't find this anywhere (from 1977). I'd buy the DVD!!!!!!!

Sorry Italians but I love only Pavarotti voice
Celestia TV Well my friends what MUST we do. We will organize & seek / petition the powers to be. We will NOT be IGNORED. There is strength in numbers not a difficult concept. Yet the application can produce barriers. BUT NOT WITH OUR RIGHTEOUS QUEST! WE WILL PREVAIL. As we speak my faithful ones are growing in NUMBERS! WE WILL NOT BE STOPPED UNTIL ALL IS ACOMPLISHED. I can say no more. Until our next battle carry on as usual. Arnold the GREAT!!!

I'm guessing they end Nessun dorma before the reprise of the main theme to allow for applause, but it sounds horrible that way.
